Plot:  At the Elk's Head Hotel bellhops torment the lobby, each other and guests. The elevator is powered by a stubborn horse. A sham robbery turns into a real one. And there is a chase on a runaway trolley.
Rotten Tomatoes:   Filmed in late December of 1917 and early January of 1918, the Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle two-reeler The Bellboy was shipped to theaters in late March. A typically uproarious Arbuckle romp, the film cast him as the bellhop of a rundown rural hotel, with Buster Keaton as his assistant and Al St. John as the surly desk clerk. After the usual baggage-smashing slapstick shenanigans, the film focuses on its "main gag," as Arbuckle takes over a barber shop and shaves an unusually hirsute customer. In the course of the next few minutes, our hero's tonsorial skills transform the customer into the spitting image of (a) Abe Lincoln, (b) General Grant, and (c) Kaiser Wilhelm! There was an obligatory romantic subplot involving Arbuckle's perennial leading lady Alice Lake -- but who noticed?

Plot:  A satire of western movies. Roscoe comes into town after riding the rails. The saloon has a trap door over a pit where bodies are tossed as they are shot. A black patron is taunted and shot at. Roscoe and Buster do everything they can to keep Al from Alice.
Rotten Tomatoes:   The second film that Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle shot in southern California captures all the clichés of the Old West and gives them a comic spin. Buster Keaton is the mayor of a rough, tough cow town where the saloon is the center of activity. Wild Bill Hiccup (Al St. John) and his band of bad guys swoop down to wreak havoc at the saloon, but they're interrupted by a drifter (Arbuckle) who dashes in and saves the day. Alice Lake plays a temperance girl who isn't adverse to hanging around the saloon if the company suits her, and Arbuckle and St. John vie for her affection. The scenario for this two-reeler was written by Natalie Talmadge, a sometime actress and sister of silent stars Norma and Constance Talmadge. She and Keaton got married a few years after Out West was made. Their romance began when both were working for Arbuckle -- is her input the reason that Keaton looks so dapper in his mayor's outfit?

Plot:  Roscoe, his wife and his mother-in-law run a seaside resort. Buster plays a gardener who puts out a fire started by Roscoe, then a delivery boy who fights with the cook St. John, then a cop.
Rotten Tomatoes:   In this short comedy film, a delivery boy and a cook fights at Mr. Rough's house. It's a very rare chance to see Buster Keaton (known as Stone Face) smiling and laughing.
