56% (3) Boxcar Bertha 88 min, R, [Crime, Drama, Romance] [Martin Scorsese] [14 Jun 1972]
Ratings & Reviews: IMDb Reviews: 61%, Rotten Tomatoes: 48%, Metacritic: 61%, External Reviews
Actors: Barbara Hershey, Barry Primus, Bernie Casey, David Carradine
Writer: Ben L. Reitman (book), Joyce Hooper Corrington (screenplay), John William Corrington (screenplay)

Plot: Based on "Sister of the Road," the fictionalized autobiography of radical and transient Bertha Thompson as written by physician Dr. Ben L. Reitman, 'Boxcar' Bertha Thompson, a woman labor organizer in Arkansas during the violence-filled Depression of the early '30's meets up with rabble-rousing union man 'Big' Bill Shelly and they team up to fight the corrupt railroad establishment and she is eventually sucked into a life of crime with him.
Rotten Tomatoes: Produced by Roger Corman and directed by Martin Scorsese, Boxcar Bertha is a Bonnie and Clyde-like yarn set during the Depression. The title character, played by Barbara Hershey, links up with union organizer David Carradine (Hershey's real-life lover at the time) after the death of her father. Running afoul of anti-union forces, Bertha and Carradine are forced into a life of crime. Whereas Bonnie and Clyde robbed banks, Boxcar Bertha's specialty is trains. A story of this nature can only end in tragedy, and wait until you see Carradine's symbolic demise! For the record, there really was a Boxcar Bertha Thompson, and it is her autobiography, Sister of the Road, that serves as the basis for Joyce and John Corrington's screenplay.

Plot: Widowed Elinor Randall and her young daughter Jerrine arrive in a barren stretch of Wyoming in 1910 after Elinor's application for work as a housekeeper is accepted by Clyde Stewart, a rancher. The work is back-breaking and the isolation is brutal, particularly as winter arrives. Elinor begins to think about homesteading her own property near Stewart's ranch, but Stewart tries to dissuade her with explanations about the killing conditions and poor rewards, especially for a woman with no man to help her ranch. Although their temperaments are different and little affection exists, Elinor and Stewart agree to marry and combine homesteads. What lies ahead is the severest test of all.
Rotten Tomatoes: This film, set in rural Wyoming in the early-20th century, focuses on taciturn Scottish farmer Rip Torn. Conchata Ferrell arrives to work as Torn's housekeeper. Conchata hopes to use her savings to insure a bright future for her daughter. Touched by her diligence, Torn slowly falls in love with Ferrell.

Ratings & Reviews: IMDb Reviews: 60%, Rotten Tomatoes: 60%, External Reviews
Actors: Barry Primus, Corin Redgrave, Don Stroud, John Phillip Law

Plot: World War I: an allied squadron and a German squadron face off daily in the skies. Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron, leads one, and, although one of his decisions cost the life of his predecessor, he expects his men to honor codes of conduct. The allied squad has similar class divisions: its colonel, an aristocrat, laments that men he considers peasants are now fliers, including a cynical and ruthless Canadian, Roy Brown, the squad's ace. As the tactics of both sides break more rules and become more destructive, the Baron must decide if he is a soldier first or part of the ruling class. He and Brown have two aerial battles, trivial in the larger scheme yet tragic.
Rotten Tomatoes: This film of the wartime exploits of Baron Von Richthoven, who was also known as the "Red Baron," was a relatively lavish Corman-brothers production, and is directed by Roger Corman. The film's airborne dogfight sequences are among its most notable features. Vintage World War I airplanes were used, and accidents during filming resulted in one death and several injuries. The evolution of airborne warfare from being a sporting game between gentlemen to its use as an instrument of total war is integral to the story. Von Richthoven (John Phillip Law), who becomes an air ace and an important German hero, was an early aeronautical rival of Hermann Goering (Barry Primus). So important was he to German morale that he was asked to retire from fighting, so that he could assume a position in the post-war German government. He refused, and was killed by a young Canadian (Don Stroud) in an airborne battle. Spookily enough, even though he died in the air, his plane is reputed to have landed intact.

Plot: Lou Andreas Sand, a once famous model, recalls her past as she tries to make success in the modeling world of New York, her stressfull workdays, her affair with Mark, an advertising executive, her friendship with photographer Aaron, and her downward spiral into ruin.
Rotten Tomatoes: In this provocative drama, Lou Andreas Sand (Faye Dunaway) is an emotionally disturbed fashion model who tries to pull her life together. Aaron (Barry Primus) is the photographer who makes her famous, and Mark (Roy Schieder ) is the wealthy man who dates the troubled girl. After a suicide attempt, Lou recalls her story in flashbacks while Aaron visits the retired model in her seaside cabin on the East Coast. She resigns herself to a life of pills and booze and she tries to fill in the blanks of her turbulent career as Aaron listens to the tragic tales of the confused and miserable model. Lou is obviously troubled by her many sexploits and unsure of what to make of them. At one point she discusses what was clearly a rape, but what she calls a passionate encounter. She also talks about how she was the protégé of a lesbian model who helped her rise to the top and then became jealous when she announced that she was to marry. In speaking of her fiancé, Lou becomes vague and distant even when talking about how she jilted him at the courthouse where they were to be wed. Afterward, she loses an important photo shoot in Paris and she blames her fiancé for that and for the resulting decline in her career and her mental health.
