Plot:  Crime melodrama about two sailors in London, an American open to theft and smuggling and an honest Jamaican, and the crooks and girls they know. A jewel theft goes wrong and those involved must decide whether to try to get away or to do the right thing. Superb photography of postwar central London when almost empty of people on a Sunday.
Rotten Tomatoes:   Bonar Colleano, who spent the war years playing featured roles in British films as likeably cocky Americans, heads the cast of Pool of London. Ever his brass, cheeky self, Colleano is cast as Dan MacDonald, a sailor who dabbles in a bit of smuggling, just for the fun of it. The fun is over when he gets mixed up with a gang of jewel thieves who have a habit of framing others for their crimes. At the risk of his own neck, MacDonald must extricate his best friend Johnny (Earl Cameron) from a murder charge. Pool of London ran into censorship troubles in the U.S. because of its depiction of a romance between Cameron, a black actor, and Susan Shaw, a white actress.

Plot:  American Madeline, a no-better-than-she-has-to-be (and then only when pushed) traveler arrives in Naples. She has an eye for men and a penchant for getting by on her wits---a 1954 term for body---and soon has a well-meaning (dumb) young composer, Ciccio providing her with room and board. But she has a male counterpart in Ciccio's friend, café-singer Nino, who recognizes her for what she is and he decides to intercede on behalf of his friend. Black Widow Madeline welcomes him into her parlor, in a manner of speaking to get past the censors, and the next thing Nino knows, he has abandoned his wedding plans with sweet-young-thing Lisa, and runs off with Madeline. Lisa and Ciccio are left with wringing hands, and Madeline and Nino become an American/Italian version of the "Battling Bickersons" or "The Honeymooners", with none of the fun.

Rotten Tomatoes:   Is Your Honeymoon Really Necessary? never really answers its own question, but has no difficulty delivering laughs in full measure. U.S. officer Laurie Vining (Bonar Colleano) hopes to spend a romantic honeymoon in London with new bride Gillian (Diana Decker). Unfortunately, Vining's former wife Candy (Diana Dors) flounces into view, claiming that their divorce is invalid. Legal advisor Frank Bettertorn (David Tomlinson) is brought in to straighten things out--only to find himself in a compromising position of his own. Based on a play by E. V. Tidmarsh, Is Your Husband Really Necessary was shot in two different versions: the British print permitted audiences a view of Diana Dors in a skimpy bikini, while the American version covered up her ample frame with a nightie.
