Plot: Anne Shirley, an orphan, is adopted by farmer Matthew Cuthbert and his sister Marilla, who were expecting a boy to help with their farm work. However, they accept Anne, who quickly endears herself to them and to the local villagers.
Rotten Tomatoes: Headstrong, red-haired Anne Shirley (Anne Shirley) comes to live at the Nova Scotia farm owned by Marilla Cuthbert (Helen Westley) and her wistful brother Matthew (O.P. Heggie). At the local school, Gilbert Blythe (Tom Brown) flirts with the surprised Anne, who later learns that because Gilbert's father ran off with Matthew's fiance, Marilla hates the whole Blythe family, and refuses to allow Anne to keep seeing Gilbert. Some years later, Anne returns from normal school to learn that Matthew is desperately ill, and that because of the money the Cuthberts have spent on her education, they cannot afford the specialist who could treat him.

Plot: During the Boxer Rebellion in China during the early 20th century, in which a Chinese secret society attacked all westerners and anyone who associated with them, Dr. Fu Manchu's wife and child are killed by foreigners. Plot: John has led a solitary life for thirty years since the death of Moonyeen Clare. But now Owens, a close friend, insists that he care for his niece, Kathleen, orphaned when her parents were lost at sea. Kathleen is five, but the years pass and now she is a young woman who is the image of Moonyeen. Willy wants Kathleen for his wife, but Sparks fly when she meets Kenneth Wayne one dark and stormy night. John is horrified for it was Wayne's father who shot Moonyeen dead on her wedding day and John has never found him or forgiven the family. When Ken goes off to war, John forbids any marriage and Ken agrees, while Kathleen does not. When Ken returns four years later when the war is over, he is crippled. He conceals his condition and makes plans to leave for America.
Rotten Tomatoes: Smilin' Through is the story of a bitter old man (Leslie Howard), whose fiancee (Norma Shearer) was killed on their wedding day by her jilted former suitor (Fredric March). Years later, the man is forced to take care of his orphaned niece (also Shearer), who looks exactly like his fiancee. Soon, the niece falls in love with the son of the jilted suitor, and Howard attempts to stop their romance from blossoming. Sidney Franklin originally filmed Smilin' Through in 1922, and the movie was later remade in 1941.
