Apache Indian
Allmusic Biography : British vocalist Apache Indian (born Steven Kapur) performs a highly eclectic form of ragga informed by the bhangra style of his east Indian heritage. After cutting his teeth toasting in U.K. dancehalls, Apache Indian began to release singles in the early 90s. Many of these singles would appear on his 1993 major-label debut, No Reservations, including "Don Raja," a song that exemplifies Apache Indians cross-cultural fusion and earned him a new nickname as well.

By the mid-90s, ragga production often included elements of hip-hop, and Apache Indians next record was no exception. Featuring guest appearances from Jamaican reggae stars Frankie Paul, Yami Bolo, and American MC Tim Dog, 1995s Make Way for the Indian included sampled tabla beats and spawned a U.S. club hit with the shuffling R&B; of "Boom Shak-a-Lak." The "Don Raja" of British ragga began to increase his international exposure, appearing in Hindi films like Love Birds and a feature role in Love Story 98. He continued to record as well, releasing Real People in 1998 and Karma in 2001.

No Reservations : Allmusic album Review : While his music is not bhangra in any accepted sense, he grew out of the bhangra scene. His is a remarkable bhangra-related dance music often carrying a social message in a mixed Punjabi, English and West Indian patois. Tracks such as "Chok There" (slang for Tear the house down), "Move over India," "Don Raja" and "Arranged Marriage" made it a remarkable debut. (With one qualification: several tracks had previously appeared on Apachi Indian by Don Raja, a mini-album for Jet Star (SDCD46) which spelled his name in a nonstandard way.)

Make Way for the Indian : Allmusic album Review : Steve Kapur is of East Indian descent, but he grew up in Birmingham, England, an industrial town burdened with economic hardship but blessed with a large immigrant population of various ethnicities, notable among them West Indians from Jamaica and actual Indians from India. Under the stage name Apache Indian, Kapur was one of the first artists to successfully fuse dancehall reggae with bhangra (the rock-influenced dance music favored by the Anglo-Indian youth), and he achieved significant chart success with his early singles and debut album. Make Way for the Indian was his sophomore effort and failed to achieve the same success, but its an eminently worthwhile album nevertheless. Here he covers the Willie Williams tune "Armagideon Time" with the help of dancehall superstar Yami Bolo and "Raggamuffin Girl" with Frankie Paul. "Boba" is one of the most explicitly bhangra-based songs he has recorded, and its one of the best things on the album, which also includes his huge hit "Boomshackalak." Song for song, its difficult to see why this disc didnt perform as well in the marketplace as his debut.
