Allmusic Biography : Along with PFM and Le Orme, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso (Banco), make up the "Big Three" in Italian progressive rock history. With the exception of one long break from the mid-80s to the early 90s, they have been together since 1969 and weathered many changes: shifting personnel, the fickleness of the music industry, tragedy, and economics. They went 25 years without releasing a studio record but continued to perform. They have influenced countless bands in their home country as well as in Germany (Sylvan), England (Ozric Tentacles, Flower Kings), and the U.S. (Mars Volta). Their sound is harmonically advanced, borrowing liberally from classical tradition, jazz, folk, and theatrical rock. Early recordings, such as their 1972 self-titled debut and 1976s Come in Unultima Cena, offered acclaimed portraits of their particular musical strengths -- operatic vocals, fleet, sophisticated dual keyboard work, syncopated rhythms, and complex harmonics in long tunes that more often than not sounded like suites. During the 80s, their sound shifted radically: Banco embraced progressive pop, wrote shorter tunes, and sounded like a cross between AOR and new wave. While this radical change brought media attention, it didnt sit well with most longtime fans, making economic gain negligible, and they split in 1985. Reuniting in the early 90s, they re-recorded tunes from their first two albums with better production values, and dropped 1994s Il Tredici, a welcome return to prog. After acoustic and live albums, the band decided to stop recording and focus on touring. They re-engaged older fans and attracted younger ones in Italy and across Europe, and resumed studio recording with 2019s conceptual Transiberiana. Banco del Mutuo Soccorso (known as Banco in the U.S.) were formed in Rome in 1969, by keyboardist/composer brothers Vittorio and Gianni Nocenzi. Heavily influenced by such British progressive giants as Gentle Giant, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Jethro Tull, as well as the Italian classical and folk traditions, they went through an evolving lineup until 1971 when they recruited guitarist Marcello Todaro and three members of Le Esperienze: vocalist Francesco Di Giacomo, drummer Pier Luigi Calderoni, and bassist Renato DAngelo. Although the group simplified their sound during the late 80s, in the 70s they delivered a series of eclectic, densely arranged progressive albums beginning with their self-titled debut and Darwin! (both from 1972), that held strong jazz overtones. For 1973’s Io Sono Nato Libero -featuring Marcellos guitar on half the album and his replacement Rodolfo Malteses on the rest, the focus shifted to the quasi-operatic vocals of di Giacomo while retaining strong fusion elements amid rock dynamics and classical flourishes. Gianni Nocenzi also left the band after this recording. The musical direction they pursued held true for 1976s Come in Unultima Cena as well. During this initial period, the bands lively stage show -- thanks to di Giacomos consummate showmanship -- drew attention from the Italian music press, and also the U.K. and the rest of Europe; the band even toured America in support of 1975s Banco, compiled from English-language remixes of early material. The bands center of focus shifted for the remainder of the 70s with the release of their original score and soundtrack for the film Garofano Rosso in 1976, becoming nearly all-instrumental and classically focused. This continued on 1978s Di Terra, after which DeAngelo left the group; he was replaced by Gianni Colaiacomo) and the following years Canto Di Primavera. After the release of 1980s Urgentissimo, the group saw diminishing fortunes in the wake of punk and new wave and pursued a more pop-friendly direction on 1980s Capolinea, 1981s Buone Notizie and 1983s ...E Via, but this direction, though well-received by radio, split their original fan base. Banco felt the tension mounting internally and split in 1985. They re-formed with an alternate lineup during the early 90s, releasing Da Qui Messere Si Domina La Valle (1991), a re-recording of their first two albums. They also saw the departure of Calderoni, who was replaced by Maurizio Masi. Il Tredici followed in 1994 -- it was their last studio album for 25 years, though the band issued the unplugged set Nudo in 1997, the 1999 reunion set En Concierto Mexico, the 30th anniversary No Palco in 2003, and 2010s Quaranta, recorded live in Rome. Banco was so popular at home, they seldom needed to venture outside Western Europe to tour. In 2014, while contemplating a new studio offering, vocalist Di Giacomo was killed in a car accident, leaving the bands future uncertain -- so much so that other players left in the next two years, including Maltese and his replacement Maurizio Solieri, Masi and his replacement Vito Sardo, percussionist Arnaldo Vacca, and horn player and vocalist Alessandro Papotto. Vittorio Nocenzi remained undaunted. He formed a new lineup around veteran rock and prog vocalist Tony DAlessio (Lost Innocence, Scenario), to honor di Giacomos words: After hearing the younger man playing live he told Nocenzi: "Before I die, mark him as a hypothetical substitute for the band." Other new members included guitarists Filippo Marcheggiani and Nicola Di Già, bassist Marco Capozi, and drummer Fabio Moresco. This version commenced playing live near the end of 2016; they toured and rehearsed almost constantly over the next two years. Meanwhile, Nocenzi and his son Michelangelo (a celebrated keyboardist and composer in his own right) began composing a new Banco recording. After securing a deal with InsideOut, Banco re-entered the studio and cut the autobiographical concept album Transiberiana to mark their return to commercial recording. Co-produced by Nocenzi and his guitarists, it also contained a pair of live bonus cuts in "Metamorfosi" and "Il Ragno." Released in the spring of 2019, the album garnered favorable reviews from the rock press, and was greeted with enthusiasm by fans.

Banco del Mutuo Soccorso : Allmusic album Review : Legendary Italian progressive rock band Banco del Mutuo Soccorso released its first LP in 1971 on the label Dischi Ricordi. The lineup included Vittorio Nocenzi (keyboards), Gianni Nocenzi (piano), Francesco Di Giacomo (vocals), Renato dAngelo (bass), the newly arrived Pierluigi Calderoni (drums), and guitarist Marcello Todara, who would soon be replaced by Rodolfo Maltese. Although plagued by poor sound quality (something frequent with Italian albums from the early 70s), this eponymous release revealed a band with stellar musicianship, an inclination toward the kind of classical-meets-rock blend the Nice had been doing in England, affinities with the burgeoning European prog rock scene, and yet retention of strong connections with a hard-to-define Italian sound, thanks mostly to singer Di Giacomo. Banco del Mutuo Soccorso contained the fast-paced "R.I.P.," a good rock number with a surprisingly lyrical bridge, and "Metamorphosi." The latter became a fan favorite, even though its construction was uneven. The band would record a stronger version of it for its first album in English (Banco), but when Di Giacomo entered the last part with English lyrics, it kind of killed the mood. The other highlight on this first opus is "Il Giardino del Mago," a piece in four parts. Less emotional but stronger in terms of cohesion and momentum than "Canto Nomade per un Prigioniero Politico," it featured beautiful keyboard work, although the star of this album is drummer Calderoni (he must have had two more arms than Carl Palmer). The album ends with "Traccia," a short instrumental piece that has nothing to do with the more commonly known "Traccia II" (on Io Sono Nato Libero, the bands third LP). Not quite as strong as its follow-up Darwin!, this first album still remains a classic element of Italian progressive rock.

Io sono nato libero : Allmusic album Review : Banco del Mutuo Soccorsos third LP, Io Sono Nato Libero, was released only a few months after the impressive Darwin!, and featured the same lineup (brothers Vittorio and Gianni Nocenzi on keyboards, Rodolfo Maltese on guitar, Pierluigi Calderoni on drums, Renato dAngelo on bass, and Francesco Di Giacomo on vocals). It yielded one classic track, "Non Mi Rompete," a beautiful Italian ballad that would be part of the bands set list for the rest of its life. Another important track is "Traccia II," which develops the musical idea found at the end of the 1971 LP Banco del Mutuo Soccorso. Music history may have preserved these two pieces, but the real point of interest on Io Sono Nato Libero is the 15-minute opus "Canto Nomade per un Prigioniero Politico," a complex and very moving piece (the title translates to "Nomad Song for a Political Prisoner"). Di Giacomo feels so involved in the lyrics that his voice is always on the verge of breaking up. The song contains a strange section of percussion overdubs in the middle, which sadly alters its cohesion, but otherwise it remains one of the groups strong compositions from its early days. This album was eclipsed by the cult status Darwin! achieved, but it should not be overlooked. It possesses all the elements that made Banco del Mutuo Soccorso such a unique band, embodying everything Italian progressive rock could be.

Garofano rosso : Allmusic album Review : Garofano Rosso is an instrumental album. Now, why would a band with such a prominent singer as Banco del Mutuo Soccorso record an instrumental album? Because behind Francesco Di Giacomos voice one finds strong instrumental compositional skills. And so the band was asked to write and record a soundtrack for the movie Garofano Rosso. (Keyboardists Vittorio and Gianni Nocenzi would later write a handful of other soundtracks, both together and separately.) But the album is not the actual soundtrack; two tracks, "Zobeida" and "Funerale," dont appear in the final cut, and the band fiddled with the track order to make things more interesting. Therefore, Garofano Rosso stands as a good album on its own, not as exciting as Darwin! or Io Sono Nato Libero, and not as impressive (or pompous) as Bancos other instrumental LP Di Terra, but still an honest effort. The main theme found in the title track appears in a few more places, bringing unity to the work. "Giugno 1924" and "Suggestioni di un Ritorno in Campagna" deserve to find their way in a Banco anthology, while "Esterno Notte (Casa di Giovanni)" makes a pretty waltz. The movies subject was the rise of fascism in post-World War I Italy, but paradoxically the music remains rather calm and pastoral. That and the shortness of the pieces can be disorienting at first for the listener accustomed to the bands more usual prog rock sound. Those fond of Di Giacomos talent will have the impression something is missing.

Come in un'ultima cena : Allmusic album Review : Come in UnUltima Cena is the last "classic" Banco album. After an instrumental album with orchestra (Di Terra, 1978), the band would favor a more commercial approach throughout the 1980s. Also the last one to feature the classic lineup of Gianni Nocenzi, Vittorio Nocenzi, Renato dAngelo, Rodolfo Maltese, Pierluigi Calderoni, and Francesco Di Giacomo (since the latter does not sing on Di Terra), this LP shows sings of breathlessness. Songs are shorter and less engaging than what can be found on earlier masterpieces like Darwin! and Io Sono Nato Libero. Two tracks stand out: the powerful "Il Ragno" and "Slogan," one of the most energetic songs the band had recorded at that point. Of the seven other tracks on the album, none leave a dent in the listeners memory: melodies are blurry and undefined. Nevertheless, musicianship remains strong, even though Di Giacomo tries to sound more like a rock singer and less like an Italian singer. Guitarist Maltese gets more exposure on this LP. Come in UnUltima Cena was simultaneously released in Italian and English versions (as As in a Last Supper), the only difference between the two being the vocal tracks. The merits of each are debatable, but boil down to whether one prefers to understand the lyrics (even if it means suffering Di Giacomos heavy accent) or to keep the melodious quality of the Italian language.

...di terra : Allmusic album Review : Released in 1978, Di Terra is a transitional album between the end of Bancos creative progressive rock phase (ending with the 1976 LP Come in UnUltima Cena) and the beginning of the groups more commercial phase (the 1979 LP Canto di Primavera). The Italian bands second all-instrumental album (Garofano Rosso was a film soundtrack), Di Terra is a symphonic suite in seven parts co-written by Gianni and Vittorio Nocenzi. Putting together an orchestra and a rock band was not new in 1978 (Deep Purple had done it years before), but rarely have the two been so nicely integrated. Of course, the project sounds a bit pompous, but the Nocenzi brothers writing eschews the Star Wars effects to concentrate on textures and melodies. The music evokes Mike Oldfields Tubular Bells, Maneige, Rick Wakemans Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table (minus the chorus), and the instrumental side of Banco. "Io Vivo" contains gripping moments, while "Né Più di un Albero Non Meno di una Stella" flirts with fusion jazz. Most of all, this album puts under the spotlight the majestic playing of the two keyboardists. Fans of singer Francesco Di Giacomo will feel a little left out. Note that all song titles are part of a verse that reads like one sentence, "di terra" being the last two words.
