Allmusic Biography : Bauhaus are the founding fathers of goth rock, creating a minimalistic, overbearingly gloomy style of post-punk rock driven by jagged guitar chords and cold, distant synthesizers. Throughout their brief career, the band explored all the variations on their bleak musical ideas, adding elements of glam rock, experimental electronic rock, funk, and heavy metal. While their following has never expanded beyond a cult, they kept their cult alive well into the 90s, a full decade after they disbanded. The group formed in 1978 in Northampton, England. Guitarist/vocalist Daniel Ash, bassist/vocalist David J (born David Jay Haskins), and drummer Kevin Haskins had played together as a trio called the Craze before forming Bauhaus with vocalist Peter Murphy. Originally, the band was called Bauhaus 1919 after the German art movement; by 1979, they had dropped the 1919 from their name. In August of 1979, the group released their debut single, "Bela Lugosis Dead," on the independent record label Small Wonder Records. Although it did not make the pop charts, it became the de facto goth rock anthem, staying in the U.K. independent charts for years. Three months later, the group signed with Beggars Banquets subsidiary label, 4AD. The groups second single, "Dark Entries," was released in January 1980. Following their first European tour, Bauhaus released their third single, "Terror Couple Kill Colonel," in the summer of that year, which became a hit on the indie charts. After touring America for the first time in September, the group released a version of T. Rexs "Telegram Sam." In October, they released their debut album, In the Flat Field, which reached number one on the independent charts and number 72 on the pop charts. The success of the album led to their first hits on the pop charts; both "Kick in the Eye" and "The Passion of Lovers" made the U.K. Top 60 in 1981. In October, they released their second album, Mask, which revealed a more ambitious musical direction; the new direction, which featured elements of metal and electronic sonic textures, made the music more accessible without abandoning the dark, foreboding core of their music. Mask was a commercial success, peaking at number 30 on the U.K. charts. In March of 1982, Bauhaus released the EP Searching for Satori, which reached number 45 on the U.K. charts; another successful single, "Spirit," followed in the summer. That fall, the group had a number 15 hit with their version of David Bowies "Ziggy Stardust." The success of the single propelled their third album, The Skys Gone Out, to number four on the album charts. Murphy contracted pneumonia at the beginning of 1983, which prevented him from participating in the recording sessions for Bauhaus fourth album, Burning From the Inside. Consequently, the record featured substantial contributions from Ash and J, who both pursued more personal and atmospheric directions. After Murphy recovered, the band toured Japan and then returned to the U.K. to promote the summer release of Burning From the Inside. The album was another hit, peaking at number 13. In July, Bauhaus split up. After Bauhaus breakup, Murphy formed Dalis Car with Japans Mick Karn and then pursued a solo career. Ash continued with Tones on Tail, a project he began in 1981; Kevin Haskins also joined the band after Bauhaus split. J made some solo records and joined the Jazz Butcher briefly. Ash, Haskins, and J formed Love and Rockets in 1985 after a proposed Bauhaus reunion fell apart because Peter Murphy wasnt interested in the project. More than a decade later, however, with the careers of both Love and Rockets and Peter Murphy at a standstill, Bauhaus re-formed for several live dates in Los Angeles, mounting a full-blown tour in 1998; the two-disc Gotham documented the reunited groups performance at New Yorks Hammerstein Ballroom. In 2008, the band resurfaced again with Go Away White, a studio album they promised as their last statement.

In the Flat Field : Allmusic album Review : Few debut albums ever arrived so nearly perfectly formed; that In the Flat Field practically single-handedly invented what remains for many as the stereotype of goth music -- wracked, at times spindly vocals about despair and desolation of many kinds, sung over mysterious and moody music -- demonstrates the sui generis power of both the band and its work. This said, perhaps the best thing about the album isnt what its supposed to sound like, but what it actually does -- an awesomely powerful, glam-inspired rock band firing on all fours, capable of restraint and complete overdrive both, fronted by a charismatic, storming frontman. Starting with the challenging angst of "Double Dare," with shattering guitar over a curious but fierce stop-start rhythm while Murphy rages ever more strongly over the top, In the Flat Field contains a wide variety of inspirations and ideas. The astonishingly precise rhythm section of David J and Haskins pulls off a variety of jaw-dropping performances, including the high-paced tension of the title track and the brooding crawl from "Spy in the Cab." Ash, much like his longtime hero Mick Ronson, turns out to be a master of turning relatively simple guitar parts into apocalyptic explosions, from the background fills on "St. Vitus Dance" to the brutal descending chords of "Stigmata Martyr." Murphy, meanwhile, channels as much Iggy Pop as he does Bowie, proving to be no simple copyist of either, able to both maniacally sing-shout and take a somewhat lighter touch throughout. Concluding with the seven-minute "Nerves," an aptly titled piece that alternates between understated energy and unleashed power toward a dramatic ending, In the Flat Field started off Bauhaus album career with a near-perfect bang.

Mask : Allmusic album Review : Managing the sometimes hard-to-negotiate trick of expanding their sound while retaining all the qualities which got them attention to begin with, on Mask the members of Bauhaus consciously stretched themselves into newer areas of music and performance, resulting in an album that was arguably even better than the bands almost flawless debut. More familiar sides of the band were apparent from the get-go; opening number "Hair of the Dog," one of the bands best songs, starts with a double-tracked squalling guitar solo before turning into a stomping, surging flow, carefully paced by sudden silences and equally sudden returns to the music, while Murphy details cases of mental addictions in pithy phrases. The energy wasnt all just explosive angst and despair, though; the one-two punches of "Kick in the Eye" and "In Fear of Fear" have as much hip-shaking groove and upbeat swing to them as portentous gloom (Ashs sax skronk on the latter, as well as on the similarly sharp "Dancing," is a particularly nice touch). Elsewhere, numerous flashes of the bands quirky sense of humor -- something often missed by both fanatical followers and negative critics both -- make an appearance; perhaps most amusing is the dry spoken-word lyric beginning "Of Lillies and Remains," as David J details a goofily grotesque situation as much Edward Gorey as Edgar Allen Poe. Add to that three of the most dramatic things the band ever recorded -- the charging, keyboard-accompanied "The Passion of Lovers," the slow, dark fairy-tale-gone-wrong "Hollow Hills," and the wracked, trudging title track, where the sudden appearance of an acoustic guitar turns a great song into a near-perfect blend of ugliness and sheer beauty -- and the end result was a perfect trouncing of the sophomore-slump myth.

The Sky’s Gone Out : Allmusic album Review : More fragmented in origin than it might appear on first glance -- the leadoff track, a phenomenal, nuclear-strength rip through Brian Enos "Third Uncle," featuring some fantastic soloing from Ash, came from a BBC radio session performance -- The Skys Gone Out was caught between the expectations of an audience now thoroughly embracing the incipient goth genre, with all the built-in limitations such expectations often provide, and a band which wanted to please them while still following its own muse. On balance its quite a fine album, but unlike Mask it misses the infusion of a more positive energy, and simply doesnt gel as perfectly, more notable for individual songs than as a whole. Old, pre-recording-career songs like the strong but already dated "In the Night" were revived and balanced against experiments and attempts to further develop the bands sound, ultimately making The Skys Gone Out feel more like a compilation than anything else. Piece by piece, though, the songs still often showed Bauhaus in excelsis. Ashs elegant, haunting acoustic guitar work received two great showcases -- "Silent Hedges," adding a more familiar electric explosion to a fine Murphy performance detailing a desperate mental collapse, and "All We Ever Wanted Was Everything," a sympathetic, nostalgic reflection on dreams of the past, again matched by a perfectly balanced Murphy vocal. Other standouts include the brooding lope of "Swing the Heartache," with a skeletal rhythm matched against some of Ashs best guitar work, and "Spirit," a live standout inspired by the performance vibe the band received from its fans.

Press the Eject and Give Me the Tape : Allmusic album Review : Just two albums into their career, Bauhaus repertoire consisted of plenty of standards and fan favorites. Despite the punk worlds disdain for live albums (because of their association with arena rock), the group issued an 11-track collection recorded in London, Liverpool, Manchester, and Paris. Though Peter Murphys stage theatrics and the dark atmosphere of a Bauhaus live date are obviously lost on the translation to record, the band are electrifying on standards such as "In the Flat Field," "Bela Lugosi Is Dead," "Kick in the Eye," "Stigmata Martyr," and "Dark Entries." The more obscure songs, including "Rose Garden Funeral of Sores" and "The Man with X-Ray Eyes," also come off well. Though these tracks arent quite subsitutes for their studio versions, fans of the band will love to hear them playing in their prime. [A Beggars Banquet CD reissue added six additional live tracks.]

Burning From the Inside : Allmusic album Review : If The Skys Gone Out felt like a collection of various recordings, Burning from the Inside really was, due in large part to outside events -- Murphy had fallen victim to a life-threatening illness, so the rest of the band began recording without him, which more than anything else foreshadowed both Bauhaus breakup and the trios future work as Love and Rockets. As a result, two songs ended up on the album, the piano-led cinematic moodiness of "Who Killed Mr. Moonlight" and the sweet acoustic drive of "Slice of Life," with David J and Ash on lead vocals respectively. Furthermore, more songs from the earliest days of the band were dug up to provide material, the most notable and successful being the dub-inflected, heavily dramatic "Shes in Parties," using filmmaking as a metaphor for romance and life, with Murphys excellent lead balanced against a near-whispering chorus from the other two singers. The end result of all this was an album that was good in spots but not as strong throughout as it could be, while betraying the other performing and writing strains that would soon cause the band to call it a day. As before, though, when the band members were on, they were on with a vengeance, such as the medieval folk dance "King Volcano" and the starkly beautiful "Kingdoms Coming." The ten-minute title track takes a good idea and stretches it out a little too long, but the concluding track "Hope" follows it with a life-affirming, inspirational vibe that serves as much as a farewell for Bauhaus audience as anything else. While imperfect, Burning from the Inside has much more to recommend it than many other albums.

Swing the Heartache: The BBC Sessions : Allmusic album Review : Whether it was the immediacy of recording or some other unexplainable element, Bauhaus always thrived when doing British radio appearances, with no less than five of the 18 tracks collected here seeing official release by the band on singles or albums during its first lifetime. That one of these was Bauhaus biggest-ever British hit, the completely and perfectly over-the-top rendition of Bowies "Ziggy Stardust," is further testimony to the bands success at the Beeb. The five show appearances here, including both John Peel sessions and guest spots with other DJs, make for an excellent sampling of the band in many different guises, from obscure rarities to redone versions of some of Bauhaus most successful songs. The first six tracks cover In the Flat Field-era material, including a slightly more laid-back version of T. Rexs "Telegram Sam" and an energetic thrash through "A God in an Alcove," as well as the powerful take of "Double Dare" which was used to begin Field. The midsection covers a lot of ground, from the familiar takes on "Ziggy" and Enos "Third Uncle" used on singles and albums to the quirky, film-dialogue-sampling drama of "Party of the First Part," not to mention an otherwise unavailable song, the funky, percussion-heavy "Poison Pen," never successfully recorded by the band elsewhere. Another rarity pops up among the final tracks -- of all things, the Strangeloves legendary Nuggets-compiled garage-rocker "Night Time," given a great bouncy reading here. Add to that some sharp takes on the lengthy title track and "Shes in Parties," not to mention a version of "The Three Shadows Pt. 2" thats notably more successful than the recording on The Skys Gone Out, and Swing is an unparalleled success, a collection that will interest and satisfy newcomers as much as longtime band fanatics.

Rest in Peace: The Final Concert : Allmusic album Review : First surfacing long after the bands 1983 breakup -- but long before anyone realized that in fact more concerts would one day be a reality -- Rest in Peace, a soundboard recording made by the bands loyal soundman Pete "Plug" Edwards, isnt as crisp-sounding or totally successful a live release as the massive Press the Eject, but still demonstrates the band members bowing out on a high with what was indeed their final show together at that time. Covering the entire show without breaks, including the use of the studio instrumental "Satori" as introduction music, Rest in Peace remains quite noteworthy not merely for the historical value, but because its the only place where official live recordings of many Burning-era songs can be found (aside from "Shes in Parties," no other song from that album was regularly featured during the bands reunion tour). The portentous but still draggy "Burning from the Inside" actually starts the show, while the haunting beauty of "Kingdoms Coming," "King Volcano" and "Slice of Life," here sung by Murphy with Ash instead of just Ash (as on the album take), surface here, along with the ranting energy of "Antonin Artaud." As with the performances of more familiar songs like "Hollow Hills," the main-set-closing "Dark Entries" and "In Fear of Fear," the band sounds excellently on form; while you cant quite say theres a definite sense that these were going to be the last performances for the known future, the four members do give it all they have. The encore includes a spirited take on "Boys," the obscure flip of "Bela Lugosis Dead," while the finale consists of that notorious number, given a then-final kick. On top of all this is a total never-officially-recorded-elsewhere rarity in the main set -- a gently spooky version of "In Heaven," the oft-covered David Lynch song used in Eraserhead.

Gotham : Allmusic album Review : After years of fruitless wishing on the part of Bauhaus fans worldwide, while Peter Murphy pursued a solo career and the remaining three members scored their own successes with various solo and group efforts, the announcement of a reunion tour caught nearly everyone by surprise. By the time the punningly titled Gotham was recorded at, indeed, a New York City concert, the reunited band was ripping through their sets with an energy and sense of drama which most late-90s acts would have given their eyeteeth for. Despite a set list generally devoid of surprises, the old live fire evident on Press the Eject and Give Me the Tape was easily reconjured here, with vicious takes on "In the Flat Field," "Kick in the Eye," and "Ziggy Stardust" some of the many highlights. Murphy is in fine voice throughout, subtly altering some lyrics to project his more positive, spiritual outlook on life while losing none of the original impact; Ash, David J and Haskins, well seasoned by their nearly two decades worth of playing experience together, are never content to simply be Murphys backing band in turn. The foursome tackle quieter numbers with grace and restraint as well, including a marvelous "Hollow Hills" and a new cover version, a take on Dead Can Dances "Severance," given a stately, majestic performance and a deeply affecting Murphy vocal (a studio version appears at the end of the album). As the signal for Bauhaus unexpected rebirth, Gotham is both a fine souvenir for fans and a great reminder of just how wonderful the band was and is.

Go Away White : Allmusic album Review : Its perhaps appropriate that Bauhaus first new studio album in 25 years is also, apparently and finally, the last. After following their 1998 reunion tour with a second in 2005 and after that eventually led to the band debuting a full range of new songs on the road, the signs for a possible new future seemed strong, but in a weird echo of the past the quartet once again disbanded before an album release. However, perhaps the best and most surprising thing about Go Away White is that it doesnt resemble Burning from the Inside or any other Bauhaus album -- rather than trying to recapture the past, the four members sought to meet in the middle where they had ended up, at least in part. Its most noticeable in Peter Murphys singing; rather than trying to be the young hellion of In the Flat Field once again, his solo performances set the tone here in both the richness of his voice and controlled dramatics of his performance, as readily heard on the wordless singing that begins the haunted moodout "Saved." However, where the band fully lets rip, as on "Adrenalin," he certainly shows hes still got the pipes for a full-bodied howl. Hearing the dynamics of Daniel Ash, David J, and Kevin Haskins working as a band in the studio again nearly a decade after Love and Rockets initially wrapped up is equally enjoyable if slightly different in feel, alternately suggesting where all three had been together and individually as well as reaching back to the original feeling of the quartet, rough and sometimes harsh but at the same time tempered with many sonic surprises. Whether its the flow of Js bass and the shimmer of keyboards on "Undone" or the full-on dub growl-into-piano and handclaps of "Mirror Remains," Ash coming up with some utterly screwy feedback shapes as he goes, they all still have striking power. "Endless Summer of the Damned," perhaps the strongest song on the album, best captures the group as individuals and as a unit, Ashs alternately nervous and volcanic guitars, the rumbling tribal punch of the rhythm, and Murphys stellar delivery (especially on the chorus) all combining perfectly to produce something that is at once recognizably Bauhaus and yet couldnt have been done by them the first time around. Above all, thanks to a relaxed and almost playful feeling that surfaces just as much as the intensity, Go Away White sounds like the four were trying one last time to reclaim the idea of Bauhaus as band and ethos from all the many limiting clichés heaped on it, something which the album title, taken from the song "Black Stone Heart," slyly hints at. If this is at last it for Bauhaus, they did not depart by going into the black.
