The Beau Brummels | ||
Allmusic Biography : While they only had two big hits, the Beau Brummels were one of the most important and underrated American groups of the 1960s. They were the first U.S. unit of any sort to successfully respond to the British Invasion. They were arguably the first folk-rock group, even pre-dating the Byrds, and also anticipated some key elements of the San Francisco psychedelic sound with their soaring harmonies and exuberant melodies. Before they finally reached the end of the string, they were also among the first bands to record country-rock in the late 60s. The key axis of the band was formed by guitarist/songwriter Ron Elliott, who penned most of the Brummels moody and melodious material, and singer Sal Valentino, owner of one of the finest voices in mid-60s rock. Spotted by local DJ Tom Donahue in a club in San Mateo (just south of San Francisco), the group was signed to Donahues small San Francisco-based label, Autumn Records, in 1964. With Sly Stewart (later Sly Stone) in the producers chair, they made the Top 20 right off the bat with "Laugh, Laugh." The melancholy, minor-key original sounded so much like the British bands inundating the airwaves that many listeners initially mistook the Brummels for an English act. The follow-up single, "Just a Little," was another excellent, melancholy number that became their biggest hit, making the Top Ten. The Beau Brummels made a couple of fine albums in 1965, dominated by strong original material and featuring the bands ringing guitars and multi-part, mournful harmonies. The best of their early work is nearly as fine as the Byrds first recordings, yet the band was losing ground commercially, partially because Autumn, being such a small label, lacked promotional muscle. "You Tell Me Why" was their only other Top 40 hit, though "Sad Little Girl" and the Byrds knock-off "Dont Talk to Strangers" were excellent singles. The band also shuffled personnel a few times, and Ron Elliott was unable to stay on the road because of diabetes. Autumn was sold in 1966 to Warners, who made the lunkheaded move of forcing the band to record an entire album of Top 40 covers -- ignoring the fact that original material was one of the Brummels primary fortes. Regrouping as a trio, the group recorded a critically acclaimed, more experimental album in 1967, Triangle. Their last Warners LP, Bradleys Barn, found the group branching into country-rock, a year or so before it became trendy. The Beau Brummels re-formed for an unimpressive reunion album in 1975, and Ron Elliott and Sal Valentino continued to make music and work on various projects of their own, though they rarely matched the excellence of the Brummels vintage work. In 2016, Ron Elliott teamed up with producer Lou Dorren to record a new Beau Brummels album, Continuum, with contributions from Sal Valentino, Ron Meagher, and Declan Mulligan. While John Petersen died in 2008, Elliott and Dorren discovered an unused drum track he had recorded, and it was used as the basis for one of the albums songs.

Introducing the Beau Brummels : Allmusic album Review : A much stronger debut than the norm for the era. Ten of the 12 cuts are Ron Elliott originals, including the hits "Laugh Laugh," "Still in Love with You Baby," and "Just a Little." The hard-rocking numbers are the weakest, but "Stick Like Glue" and "I Would Be Happy" are fine Beatlesque numbers, and "Theyll Make You Cry" is a first-rate moody folk-rocker. The CD reissue adds two bonus tracks, a demo of "Just a Little" and the single "Good Time Music."

Beau Brummels 66 : Allmusic album Review : While it has gotten a bum rap in the wake of their subsequent masterpieces, the San Fran-based Beau Brummels major-label debut -- simply titled Beau Brummels 66 -- includes a dozen solid remakes of concurrent pop, folk, and rock tracks. The lineup consisted of Ron Elliott (guitar/vocals), Sal Valentino (vocals), Ron Meagher (bass/harmonica/guitar/vocals), Declan Mulligan (guitar/harmonica/vocals), John Petersen (drums/vocals), and for a brief time Don Irving (guitar), who filled in for Elliott. In an era marred by marginal (at best) cover bands, the Beau Brummels reveal considerable talents as interpreters of other peoples hits -- although none of these selections are destined to surpass the originals. Of the three Beatles-related entries, the Paul McCartney-penned "Woman" -- which Peter & Gordon took into the Top 20 -- is the most appealing. The delicate baroque arrangement serves the storyline well and the combos natural penchant for effortlessly adopting the British Invasion style ultimately contributes to the authenticity of this version. They arguably one-up the Byrds "Mr. Tambourine Man" by including Bob Dylans alternate verses. Paul Simons "Homeward Bound" is treated sensitively, but the intimacy is lost once the robust choir chimes in during the chorus. One rather unanticipated gem is the dark menacing overhaul of "These Boots Are Made for Walkin." With creepy minor chords crawling through the song, it has a sense of foreboding that isnt easily dismissed. In the same vein, the update of Sonny Bonos "Bang Bang" takes on an ominous mantle of uncertainty. Less convincing are the Beau Brummels spin on "Play with Fire" from the Rolling Stones songbook, while "Louie, Louie," "Hang on Sloopy," and the inconsequential "Mrs. Brown Youve Got a Lovely Daughter" uniformly detract more than they add to the proceedings. In short order, Elliott and Valentino would reestablish themselves as the creative force behind the unit and reappear with the highly lauded Triangle (1967) and Bradleys Barn (1968) platters.

Triangle : Allmusic album Review : The jewel in the Beau Brummels crown, Triangle was an unexpected departure from the bands earlier hitmaking formula -- and demonstrated Ron Elliotts growing maturation as a songwriter. All the bands signature styles (folk, country swing, and Brit-pop) are still heard in the mix, but the tunes here assume an added aura of mysticism. Buried commercially by the likes of Sgt. Pepper, Triangle shared its premise of songs loosely united by a common theme -- in this case, a ruminative dream cycle (though to call Triangle a concept album might be overstating the case). The exquisite "Magic Hollow," graced by Van Dyke Parks delicate harpsichord, was surely the LPs highlight. Plucked as a single, it barely dented the charts, yet remains one of the most beautiful tunes in the entire Brummels canon. The albums first five songs -- "Are You Happy," "Only Dreaming Now," "Painter of Women," "Keeper of Time," and "It Wont Get Better" -- form a surprisingly coherent and cohesive whole despite marked differences. "Dreaming"s accordion transports the listener to Paris Montmartre, while "Painter" suggests the shifting sands of the Middle East. Elliotts lyric imagery in these tunes and a third track -- "The Wolf of Velvet Fortune" -- is particularly striking, and Sal Valentinos richly expressive voice elevates all three to sublime heights. Too long ignored by rock cognoscenti, Triangle is (all hyperbole aside) a fine album that deserves to be heard by a wider audience. In late 2002 Collectors Choice increased the odds of this occuring by reissuing the album on CD.

Bradley's Barn : Allmusic album Review : After taking the Beau Brummels to the pop/folk psychedelic edge, producer Lenny Waronker took the band to Nashville, literally. Possibly influenced by the Byrds Sweetheart experiments, the group (now down to just Sal Valentino on vocals and Ron Elliott on guitars) wedded with Nashvilles finest, including guitarist Jerry Reed and drummer Kenneth A. Buttrey, both veterans of Dylans Nashville sessions. These players were not just good musicians, but smart musicians, easily embellishing the Elliott/Valentino duo as if they had been playing with the two for years, not days. The resulting masterpiece, no doubt due to the awesome Brummels original songs (especially "Cherokee Girl," "Turn Around," and "Deep Water"), is a virtual tapestry in country and rock.

The Beau Brummels : Allmusic album Review : After The Beau Brummels dissolved in 1968 following their swan song, Bradleys Barn, it was doubtful that wed ever hear from the band again, despite their individual and collective brilliance. The group did somehow reunite in 1975, however, for this fine and somewhat understated album. The bands weaving of folk, country,k and pop stylings hadnt really changed that much from their prime in the mid- to late 60s. Ron Elliot has several superb songs on here, notably "Tennessee Walker" and the excellent album closer, "Today by Day," which is sung by Sal Valentino in his most soulful and intense style. Unfortunately, the groups appeal was probably lost in the mid-70s arena rock world, and precious few people bought the record. This, however, does not take anything away from a record that, for all intents and purposes, was one of the most successful "reunion" projects of its time.

Autumn of Their Years : Allmusic album Review : These underrated folk-rock pioneers cut a great number of unreleased outtakes/demos during their mid-60s prime that didnt make it onto the albums they released for the tiny Autumn label during that period. Fourteen of those songs were released in the early 1980s by Rhino on the fine From the Vaults album. Autumn of Their Years reprises ten of those tunes and adds 16 previously unreleased cuts for a grand total of 26, all of which are group originals. There are a lot of fine moments here, but its actually a bit much for all but hardcore fans. First off, the best cuts -- ones like "She Sends Me," "Dream On," and "Love is Just a Game," which display their supremely haunting folk-rock melodicism and minor-key harmonies -- were already available on From the Vaults. The 16 newly found demos arent as good, production-wise (several are acoustic sketches) or material-wise. Earlier demos of their hits "Laugh Laugh," "Just a Little," and "Still in Love with You Baby" are interesting in comparison to the originals, but not as good. And some strong cuts from From the Vaults are inexplicably omitted. Of the new vault finds, the highlight is "Tomorrow Is Another Day," an acoustic ballad showcasing Sal Valentinos rich and moving vocals.
