Blitzen Trapper | ||
Allmusic Biography : Blitzen Trappers music went through various genres with each record, bouncing from indie folk to art rock to experimental folk before settling into a rich, dusty brand of Neil Young-inspired alt-country. The band formed in 2000 in Portland, Oregon, with songwriter Eric Earley leading a lineup that also included Erik Menteer (guitar, keyboard), Brian Adrian Koch (drums, vocals), Michael Van Pelt (bass), Drew Laughery (keyboard), and Marty Marquis (keyboard, vocals). Before signing a record contract in 2007, the band released three albums on its own dime: an eponymous effort in 2003, Field Rexx in 2005, and the highly acclaimed Wild Mountain Nation in 2007. The latter album landed the group a record deal with Sub Pop. With Sub Pops help, the group hit a creative peak with 2008s Furr, a collection of 13 songs that found Blitzen Trapper boiling down their many influences into a cohesive, unique Americana sound. The Black River Killer EP followed in 2009, and the group spent part of that year working on a new full-length release, which arrived one year later in the form of Destroyer of the Void. Laughery left the band after a subsequent tour, and when it came time to record the bands third Sub Pop release, American Goldwing, Blitzen Trapper opened the studio doors to outside collaborators for the first time, with Tchad Blake mixing the record and Gregg Williams co-producing. Musically, though, the guys kept things entirely within the family, reaching back to their 70s country and Southern rock influences without losing their contemporary appeal. The band released the albums Destroyer of the Void in 2010 and American Goldwing in 2011 -- both to critical acclaim. Their seventh studio album, VII, arrived in September 2013 via a new partnership with Vagrant Records, and Blitzen Trapper recorded their first live album that November at the Doug Fir Lounge. Live in Portland was self-released as a free download in 2014. Seeking to capture that live sound in the studio, their eighth studio album, the looser All Across This Land, was issued the following year via Vagrant. In 2017, the band released the ambitious concept LP/rock opera Wild and Reckless, which served as a both a companion to and extension of their acclaimed 2008 release Furr. The band kept Furr alive in 2018 via an expanded tenth anniversary edition of the album, which was also supported by a commemorative tour.

Wild Mountain Nation : Allmusic album Review : Why compile a wildly eclectic mix CD when you can create your own? That seems to be the guiding philosophy behind Portland, OR, sextet Blitzen Trapper. Wild Mountain Nation picks up where 2004s schizophrenic Field Rexx left off and offers a dizzying lo-fi psychedelic prog rock power pop alt-country indie rock jamfest (and thats just the first five songs). Its unlikely to win over any adherents of the "consistency is better" school of music appreciation. But if musical adventurousness and short attention spans are viewed as positive attributes, then these 13 short songs offer ample rewards. And if you dont like what youre hearing, just wait 30 seconds. Its easy enough to play spot-the-influences -- the early-70s cowboy stoner songs of the Grateful Dead and the New Riders of the Purple Sage, the mad, fractured pop of Syd Barrett and early Pink Floyd, the sonic squalls and feedback blasts of Pavement, the fragile weirdness and melodic sensibilities of the Flaming Lips. What is more remarkable is, for the most part, these disparate influences actually hang together as coherent songs. "Murder Babe" is typical -- a choice slab of Who- and Kinks-inspired power pop, complete with windmilling power chords, that morphs into a psychedelic prog rock freakout worthy of the Soft Machine. The title track and "Country Caravan" would have been worthy additions to Workingmans Dead or American Beauty, while "Woof & Warp of the Quiet Giants Hem" mixes prime Lips-inspired indie rock with what sounds like a hippie marching band. Its all wildly imaginative, and frequently excellent. The wild mountain nation appears to be a wide-open territory, but most of it is worthy of extended exploration.

Furr : Allmusic album Review : Released in 2007, Wild Mountain Nation, Blitzen Trappers third collection of misty, lo-fi, Americana-infused art pop, drew critical acclaim as fast as it switched keys, setting the eclectic Pacific Northwest outfit up for a possible breakthrough with its impending follow-up. One of the many benefits of having your own recording studio (no matter how grand or rickety) is the ability to churn out an album whenever you feel like it, which is why 2008s Furr is so remarkable. The 21st century indie rock D.I.Y. method of record production has a tendency to hold speed and cost over sound quality, but Blitzen Trappers first release for Sub Pop doesnt just improve upon the promise of WMN, it expands its sonic horizons as well, narrowing the mixtape glee that fueled its predecessor with just enough maturity to lend it considerable weight -- the title track alone, an instantly memorable tale of a boy raised by wolves, seduced by a girl, then returned to the wild, feels timeless in a way few modern songs ever achieve. Fans who were drawn in by the groups manic Of Montreal-meets-Grateful Dead backwoods effusiveness will rally around leadoff tracks "Sleepytime in the Western World" and "Gold for Bread," both of which mine familiar Blitzen Trapper pop territory, but its the late-60s/early-70s sundown vibe of artists like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (especially the latters experimental Symphonion Dream album) that the majority of these new songs bask in.

Destroyer of the Void : Allmusic album Review : Blitzen Trappers fifth full-length album opens with the Portland, Oregon-based sextets most challenging song to date, a sprawling, six-minute, prog rock epic that will draw forth from the lips of critics names like Queen, Bowie, ELO, Tull, and the Beatles, and like its heavily sequined, 2010 sister/brother "Flash Delirium" by MGMT, it forgets that big fish require big hooks to land. Technically impressive, immaculately arranged and performed, "Destroyer of the Void" removes the kitchen sink from the equation early in the record, which helps pave the way for Destroyer of the Void, the album, to unfold, and while theres nothing here to match the instant gratification of songs like "God + Suicide" and the lovely title track from 2008s Furr, theres enough meat on these bones to suggest that the band hasnt lost its knack for crafting spiritually charged, enigmatic woodcuts of 21st century Americana. Frontman Eric Earleys obvious love of the Beach Boys, Gram Parsons, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young hangs like a fog over the Void, and his reliance on redemptive, outlaw, and biblical imagery often feels like Nick Cave and 16 Horsepower without the torrential brimstone. Album highlights arrive in the form of murder ballads ("The Man Who Would Speak True"), lush desert hymns ("Heaven and Earth"), and the Doors-inspired highway rockers ("Dragons Song"), all of which feel lived in and appropriately sepia-toned. Genre studies like the Nilsson-esque "Lover Leave Me Drowning" and "The Tree," the latter a simple, sweetly sung duet with fellow West Coast folkie Alela Diane that wouldnt have sounded out of place in Christopher Guests 60s folk parody/tribute A Mighty Wind, are less effective, but like everything on this wildly imperfect collection, they feel undeniably genuine in their execution.

American Goldwing : Allmusic album Review : After nearly a decade of flirtation, Blitzen Trapper finally took the plunge and dove headfirst into the lake in crafting American Goldwing, a straight-up, mid-70s inspired Southern rock album that fuses the Saturday night swagger of Lynyrd Skynyrd with the stoic peasantry of the Band. Similar in sound and feel to fellow Pacific Northwesterners the Decemberists’ King Is Dead, but sporting a darker patina of authenticity (which is odd, considering neither group has roots in the deep south), American Goldwing comes out of the gate howling with “Might Find It Cheap,” a taut and infectious, summer boot-stomper that sounds tailor-made to buckle the speakers in a second generation Pontiac Firebird. What follows is a lovingly balanced set of rural rockers (“Street Fighting Sun”) and dirt road ballads (“Girl in a Coat”) that sound about as far from the murky introspection of 2010’s Destroyer of the Void as one would expect from a band that continuously tries to reinvent themselves within their own psych-folk/alt-country/indie rock universe, and almost always succeeds.

VII : Allmusic album Review : On 2011s Jack and Coke-infused American Goldwing, Blitzen Trapper ditched the pastoral Pacific Northwest luster of previous outings in favor of a more Southern-fried constitution, picking out the tastiest bits of Skynyrd and the Band and adding their own signature blend of mystic Americana and crafty, decidedly non-Portlandia indie folk-rock into the mix. Blitzen Trappers Roman numeral-adorned seventh long-player adopts a similar disposition, but adds elements of countrypolitan and suburban hip-hop into the pot, seasoning their already heady brew with a little North Mississippi Allstars and Odelay-era Beck, especially on cuts like "Feel the Chill" and "Ever Loved Once," resulting in a sort of cosmic, high-def honky tonk that for the most part proves tasty, injecting some much needed brevity into windy frontman Eric Earleys colorful yet often perfunctory tales of sin and redemption. Its not all just Paisley Park meets Muscle Shoals-inspired mash-ups though, as evidenced by more measured and nuanced tracks like the soulful, gospel-tinged "Shine On" and the earthy, highway-bound closer "Dont Be a Stranger," but VII certainly finds the Oregon-based group jettisoning the more Dylanesque aspects of its sound. Puckish yet ultimately forgettable late-album cuts like "Drive on Up" and "Heart Attack," the latter of which wouldnt have sounded out of place on an Eagles album (Earleys throaty, commanding voice is often a dead ringer for "Long Run"-era Don Henley), sound like extras from the American Goldwing sessions, and the abrasive (sonically) "Oregon Geography," with its faux field recording hiss and fractured dub foundation, feels gimmicky instead of subversive, but at least theyre poking around in different corners of the room, which is ultimately what makes each new Blitzen Trapper offering worth taking out for a spin or two, or four, or ten.

All Across This Land : Allmusic album Review : No longer concerned with making even the slightest feint toward delicate indie rock sensibilities, Blitzen Trapper settle into the 70s on All Across This Land, their eighth album but only third since retooling themselves as hirsute troubadours. With its ten songs weighing in at a mere 40 minutes, All Across This Land feels designed to be spun on vinyl, with the first side setting like a sunset with "Lonesome Angel" and the second side crashing out of the gate with "Nights Were Made for Love," a song designed as both an open-road anthem and a third single to be serviced to AOR. Blitzen Trappers period trappings -- which, outside of the occasional old-fashioned synth purloined from 1985, are meticulously accurate -- are the key to their charm, because they devote as much attention to their arrangements and productions as they do their songs. A fair chunk of All Across This Land hews to a burnished folk-rock suited to the wide-open plains -- its a combination of Neil Young and the Band, skewed by a dash of Petty -- but the songs that pull in the attention are the lumbering riff-rockers, the ones that open the album and set a muscular, nostalgic tone that, if youre of a certain disposition, is pretty hard to resist.

Wild and Reckless : Allmusic album Review : Described by frontman Eric Earley as both a companion to and extension of their acclaimed 2008 release Furr, Wild & Reckless was born out of Blitzen Trappers rock opera of the same name, which debuted in their hometown of Portland, Oregon in 2016. A nostalgia-driven cautionary tale of corruption, drugs, heartbreak, and science fiction -- think Bonnie and Clyde meets Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas -- the 12-track set includes seven songs from the musical and five new numbers, all of which brood, shimmy, pine, and shake with the distinctive backwoods Laurel Canyon vibe that became the bands forte upon the release of 2011s American Goldwing. That penchant for mounting classic rock tropes onto a country-folk foundation gets the occasional deviation -- the airy "No Mans Land" and the orchestral "Forever" definitely lean toward the musical theater side of the bands oeuvre -- but for the most part, Wild & Reckless eschews the groups more experimental works like Wild Mountain Nation and Destroyer of the Void. Still, Earley remains an engaging vocalist and lyricist, and its easy to get swept up in all of the weird roadside Americana imagery, even if its not often clear where the narrative is going. Blitzen Trapper have always been at their best when the rubber meets the road, so to speak, and highway-ready anthems like "Rebel," "Stolen Hearts," "Dance with Me," and the soaring title cut dont disappoint, delivering a perfect blend of pathos and Pacific Northwest wanderlust, which incidentally is exactly what made Furr so compelling. |
