Bobby “Blue” Bland![]()
Allmusic Biography : Bobby Bland earned his enduring blues superstar status the hard way: without a guitar, harmonica, or any other instrument to fall back upon. All Bland had to offer was his magnificent voice, a tremendously powerful instrument in his early heyday, injected with charisma and melisma to spare. Just ask his legion of female fans, who deemed him a sex symbol late into his career. For all his promise, Blands musical career ignited slowly. He was a founding member of the Beale Streeters, the fabled Memphis aggregation that also included B.B. King and Johnny Ace. Singles for Chess in 1951 (produced by Sam Phillips) and Modern the next year bombed, but that didnt stop local DJ David Mattis from cutting Bland on a couple of 1952 singles for his fledgling Duke logo. Blands tormented crying style was still pretty rough around the edges before he entered the Army in late 1952. But his progress upon his 1955 return was remarkable; with saxist Bill Harveys band (featuring guitarist Roy Gaines and trumpeter Joe Scott) providing sizzling support, Blands assured vocal on the swaggering "Its My Life Baby" sounds like the work of a new man. By now, Duke was headed by hard-boiled Houston entrepreneur Don Robey, who provided top-flight bands for his artists. Scott soon became Blands mentor, patiently teaching him the intricacies of phrasing when singing sophisticated fare (by 1962, Bland was credibly crooning "Blue Moon," a long way from Beale Street). Most of Blands savage Texas blues sides during the mid- to late 50s featured the slashing guitar of Clarence Hollimon, notably "I Smell Trouble," "I Dont Believe," "Dont Want No Woman," "You Got Me (Where You Want Me)," and the torrid "Loan a Helping Hand" and "Teach Me (How to Love You)." But the insistent guitar riffs guiding Blands first national hit, 1957s driving "Farther Up the Road," were contributed by Pat Hare, another vicious picker who would eventually die in prison after murdering his girlfriend and a cop. Later, Wayne Bennett took over on guitar, his elegant fretwork prominent on Blands Duke waxings throughout much of the 60s. The gospel underpinnings inherent to Blands powerhouse delivery were never more apparent than on the 1958 outing "Little Boy Blue," a vocal tour de force that wrings every ounce of emotion out of the grinding ballad. Scott steered his charge into smoother material as the decade turned: the seminal mixtures of blues, R&B;, and primordial soul on "I Pity the Fool," the Brook Benton-penned "Ill Take Care of You," and "Two Steps From the Blues" were tremendously influential to a legion of up-and-coming Southern soulsters. Collected on the 1961 LP Two Steps from the Blues, they produced one of the classic full-lengths of modern blues. Scotts blazing brass arrangements upped the excitement ante on Blands frantic rockers "Turn on Your Love Light" in 1961 and "Yield Not to Temptation" the next year. But the vocalist was learning his lessons so well that he sounded just as conversant on soulful R&B; rhumbas (1963s "Call on Me") and polished ballads ("Thats the Way Love Is," "Share Your Love With Me") as with an after-hours blues revival of T-Bone Walkers "Stormy Monday Blues" that proved a most unlikely pop hit for him in 1962. With "Aint Nothing You Can Do," "Aint Doing Too Bad," and "Poverty," Bland rolled through the mid-60s, his superstar status diminishing not a whit. In 1973, Robey sold his labels to ABC Records, and Bland was part of the deal. Without Scott and his familiar surroundings to lean on, Blands releases grew less consistent artistically, though His California Album in 1973 and Dreamer the next year boasted some nice moments (there was even an albums worth of country standards). The singer re-teamed with his old pal B.B. King for a couple of mid-70s albums that broke no new ground but further heightened Blands profile, while his solo work for MCA teetered closer and closer to MOR (Bland has often expressed his admiration for ultra-mellow pop singer Perry Como). Bland began recording for Jackson, Mississippis Malaco Records in the mid-80s. His pipes undeniably reflected the ravages of time, but he endured as a blues superstar of the loftiest order, resurfacing in 1998 with Memphis Monday Morning, and five years later with Blues in Memphis. Bland died in Memphis in June 2013 at the age of 83.

Two Steps From the Blues : Allmusic album Review : Without a doubt, Two Steps from the Blues is the definitive Bobby "Blue" Bland album and one of the great records in electric blues and soul-blues. In fact, its one of the key albums in modern blues, marking a turning point when juke joint blues were seamlessly blended with gospel and Southern soul, creating a distinctly Southern sound where all of these styles blended so thoroughly it was impossible to tell where one began and one ended. Given his Memphis background, Bobby "Blue" Bland was perfectly suited for this kind of amalgam as envisioned by producer/arranger Joe Scott, who crafted these wailing horn arrangements that sounded as impassioned as Blands full-throated, anguished vocals. It helped, of course, that the songs were uniformly brilliant. Primarily from the pen of Deadric Malone, along with Duke head Don Robey and Scott (among others), these are the tunes that form the core of Bobby "Blue" Blands legend and the foundation of soul-blues: "Two Steps from the Blues," "I Dont Want No Woman," "Cry, Cry, Cry," "Im Not Ashamed," "Lead Me On," "Little Boy Blue" -- songs so good they overshadow standards like "St. James Infirmary." These are songs that blur the division between Ray Charles soul and Chess blues, opening the doors for numerous soul and blues sounds, from Muscle Shoals and Stax through the modern-day soul-bluesman. Since this, like many blues albums from the late 50s/early 60s, was a collection of singles, its possible to find the key tracks, even the entire album, on the numerous Bobby "Blue" Bland collections released over the years, but this remains an excellent, essential blues album on its own terms -- one of the greatest ever released.

Here’s the Man!!! : Allmusic album Review : Heres the Man! contains recordings Bland cut for the Duke label in the early 60s. It has the same intensity and variety of his late-50s breakthrough album, Two Steps From the Blues, and mimics that albums program of big band-blues swingers, straight blues, and ballads. Bland displays his vocal power throughout Heres the Man! using his volcanic, guttural delivery to easily work through Joe Scotts galvanizing arrangements, especially on "Twistin up the Road" and "Turn on Your Love Light." He shows stylistic flexibility as well, expertly handling both T-Bone Walkers after-hours classic "Stormy Monday Blues" and the honky tonk-style ballad "Youre the One (That I Adore)." In the 70s, Bland would even record an entire album of country standards. Along with Little Milton, Bland took the swinging, soulful blues of Roy Brown and B.B. King and updated it to fit the more polished, yet no less driving soul sound that was emerging around 1960; Heres the Man! is a prime document of Blands explorations. Since it is out of print, though, look for these fine tracks on Blands many MCA compilations.

After All : Allmusic album Review : From 1986, AFTER ALL was the follow-up to Bobby Blands MEMBERS ONLY, which started his long relationship with the Jackson, Mississippi-based Malaco Records. While not as celebrated as its predecessor, AFTER ALL finds Bland in fine voice throughout. He works his way through a set comprised primarily of originals by Malaco regular writers such as George Jackson, Robert A. Johnson, and Larry Addison. Recorded at Malacos own studios as well as at the famed Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Alabama, producers Tommy Couch and Wolf Stephenson embellish the songs tastefully--the strings on the title song, arranged by Harrison Calloway, underscore as well as sway. The closing version of "I Stand Accused" is a powerful example of Blands confident ease with his impassioned and impressive voice.

First Class Blues : Allmusic album Review : Although it isnt billed as such, this is a compilation of some of the best tracks from Blands first two 80s albums for Malaco fleshed out with remakes of some of his most famous late-50s and early-60s hits. Of the latter, the standouts are probably "Two Steps From the Blues" and "St. James Infirmary." Bland cant quite hit the high notes the way he once did, but his voice is still attractive and his phrasing is, if anything, even better. The more recent material ranges from "Members Only," with its great retro-60s soul groove, to the straight-ahead blues of "Straight From the Shoulder."

Midnight Run : Allmusic album Review : When Bobby "Blue" Bland was recording for Malaco in the 80s and 90s, many blues experts asserted that he was past his prime -- and they were right. Bland had done his best work for Duke in the 50s and 60s, and his voice wasnt what it once was. But the blues/soul singer was still capable of delivering a worthwhile album, and he still had a loyal fan base. In fact, the singer was a consistent seller for Malaco, which could generally be counted on to give him good or excellent material to work with. Recorded when Bland was in his late fifties, Midnight Run isnt remarkable but is generally decent. The production of Tommy Couch and Wolf Stephenson is rock solid, and Bland is soulful and satisfying on the amusing "Take off Your Shoes," the reggae-influenced title song, and arrangements of Bill Withers "Aint No Sunshine" and the Mel & Tim hit "Starting All Over Again." Although casual listeners would be better off with a collection of Blands Duke material, Midnight Run is a CD that his hardcore fans will enjoy.

Here We Go Again : Allmusic album Review : Though Bobby "Blue" (which he dispenses with for this release) Bland is often celebrated for his 50s recordings, the fact is that he worked continuously for the rest of the century. Hes in fine voice on 1982s HERE WE GO AGAIN, growling seductively on the slow ballads and emoting with confidence and vigor throughout. The album is full of high points, nicely orchestrated and luxuriously arranged and produced. "Never Let Me Go" matches Bland and his rhythm section with silky strings and a contrasting flute. And "Dont Go to Strangers" is a marvel of warmth and passion, complete with a soulful trombone solo. Strong material and sympathetic production make this overlooked release a quiet winner. Its as timeless as the blues can be, relevant and riveting in any decade.

Portrait of the Blues : Allmusic album Review : This 1991 release, along with YEARS OF TEARS from 1993, amply demonstrate the enduring power of Bobby Bland, a most singular blues singer. Justly hailed for his 50s records on the Duke label, Bland remained a powerful presence over the ensuing decades. As with all of his recordings for the Jackson, Mississippi-based Malaco label, the bulk of the songs were penned by Malacos in-house writers. One of the sets only numbers from an outside source is the opening "Aint No Love For Sale" by John Barranco. With his characteristic snorts and growls, its clear from the outset that Bobby "Blue" Bland is in command. PORTRAIT is his usual mix of bluesy shuffles, ballads, and soulful stomps. And any album thats got a song called "Shes Puttin Something In My Food" has got a leg up on the competition. Produced by Wolf Stephenson and Tommy Couch, PORTRAIT features a regal stable of players, including the durable Muscle Shoals rhythm section of drummer Roger Hawkins and bass player David Hood.

The Voice (Duke Recordings 1959-69) : Allmusic album Review : A 26-track compilation of Duke sides from Blands peak decade (1959-1969). MCAs two-volume The Duke Recordings covers this period in greater depth, and will be more readily available to most North American consumers. On its own terms, though, its an excellent collection. Contains most of his biggest R&B; hits ("Turn On Your Love Light," "Stormy Monday Blues," "Call On Me," "Aint Nothing You Can Do"), as well as some cuts that didnt make it onto The Duke Recordings.

Years of Tears : Allmusic album Review : Perhaps no artist has flourished at Malaco more than Bobby "Blue" Bland. Blands animated, raw voice, though not as wide-ranging, still has a character and quality unmatched in blues, soul or vintage R&B.; This CD is his finest for the label since Members Only. The opening number "Somewhere Between Right & Wrong" has a simmering track, Blands mournful, explosive leads, tasty organ, tight drumming, and on-the-money lyrics from composers Johnny Barranco and Jackson. It sets the stage for nine additional country-tinged and bluesy soul tunes, including three from Frederick Knight, who also produced his compositions. Its not his Duke material, but its close enough to satisfy.

Sad Street : Allmusic album Review : Malacos well-oiled, violin-enriched studio sound fit Blands laid-back contemporary approach just fine (even if his voice admittedly wasnt what it used to be). With top-flight songwriters George Jackson, Robert Johnson, and Sam Mosley contributing material to the project, the results are agreeable if less than earthshaking. Why Bland chose to cover Rod Stewarts "Tonights the Night" remains a mystery, however.

Memphis Monday Morning : Allmusic album Review : Age is no hindrance to Bobby "Blue" Bland doing what he does best -- recording and entertaining. The husky-throated blues singer, who was close to 70 when this CD dropped, still has that growl that makes body hair stand on end, and he forges on stronger than ever without any noticeable quality drops -- not recording-wise, anyway. Still strutting and profiling, Memphis Monday Morning commences with a taste of braggadocio à la "Im Bobby B"; the warning to all, "I Dont Want Nobody Kicking in My Stall"; and the "Im letting you know (that I know what youve been doing)" "Theres a Rat Loose in My House." It gets even better with chilling performances of "Memphis Monday Morning" and "I Hate Missing You." The titles are interesting in themselves, and when you add Blands Jim Beam vocals; the best musicians in Mississippi; Quanda Brooks, Thomisene Anderson, and Jewel Bass backing vocals; and production by Tommy Couch and Wolf Stephens, you have a high-quality, potent blues grenade on your hands.

The Anthology : Allmusic album Review : As the quintessential chitlin circuit R&B;/blues star, Memphis-based singer Bobby "Blue" Blands career has been relatively well-documented on CD. Still, until this 2001 double set, all 25 of his Top Ten R&B; hits have not been available in one package. The Anthology is still not a complete career overview though, as it ends in 1982 before his prolific years at Malaco. It does, however, cover a remarkably prolific 30-year period, starting with his first recordings for Duke in 1952 and touching base at Dunhill and MCA, all conveniently located under the current Universal Music label umbrella. Die-hard fans of Bland during this period likely own the three double-disc sets MCA released in the mid-90s but, for those who dont need the warts-and-all treatment yet want something more in depth than skimpy single-disc collections, this is certainly the way to go. Soul expert Bill Dahls excellent liner notes provide anecdotes along with the major events that shaped Blands life and ultimately these recordings. The 16-page book lists detailed and comprehensive individual track information, noting specific musicians on each of the 50 cuts. The overall effect is startling in its consistency. Blands style and voice are immediately identifiable throughout, and the songwriting -- even on the later tracks -- typically suits his grits-and-honey approach. A previously unreleased live eight-minute 1973 version of "This Time Im Gone for Good," which demonstrates how effectively Bland extended his songs in concert, is the only collectable track here, but this chronologically arranged set is not geared toward that segment of the audience. Sonically, The Anthology is the best this material has ever sounded, with the 60s songs absolutely stunning in their remastered definition. While he experienced a significant career resurgence in the 80s, which is where this sets stops, these are the classic songs that form the basis of any serious blues collection. As such, its an essential document of one of Americas most talented, and creative, blues singers.

Blues at Midnight : Allmusic album Review : In several important respects, Blues at Midnight is what an album by a major septuagenarian blues singer should be. The production is straight-ahead and dignified, and very much in Blands time-honored tributary about halfway between blues and soul, with plenty of organ and some brass. The songs are a little on the generic side, but theyre suitable, lightly melancholy vehicles for Blands subdued persona. While Bobbys voice sounds thinner and more weathered than it did several decades previously, as could be expected from a 73-year-old, its still in decent, expressive shape. Where this disc falls down is in the repeated insertions of Blands trademark tic: a full-on snort, just as blatant as someone gauchely imitating a heavy snorer. That might seem like a small thing to pick on, but if this were anyone other than Bland, no one would have allowed any of those irritating snorts on the record, let alone dozens of them. Its an unfortunate blemish on whats otherwise a reasonably respectable session, which leans toward the side of the blues repertoire thats sadder, winding down toward after hours.
