Caitlin Rose | ||
Allmusic Biography : Caitlin Roses inspirations, from Gram Parsons to Bonnie Raitt to Linda Ronstadt, belied her late-‘80s birth. The offbeat Nashville, Tennessee-based singer/songwriter and guitarist debuted in February 2008 on the Theory 8 label with the Dead Flowers EP, its title track a Rolling Stones cover with a pleading touch, laced with pedal steel guitar. Five months later, the limited Gorilla Man, pressed on 300 copies of 7” vinyl, featured re-recordings. Her debut album, Own Side Now, followed in August 2010. It was issued on Names, the label that had issued Dead Flowers in the U.K., and reissued in 2011 following her decision to sign with ATO. The assured and impressive The Stand-In appeared early in 2013.

Own Side Now : Allmusic album Review : As is so often the case with American artists whose appeal isnt exactly straight down the middle, Caitlin Rose was initially more successful overseas than in her homeland. But its not as tragic a tale as it might sound, since "initially" refers only to the period of time during which her entire output consisted of her debut EP, Dead Flowers. The arrival of the young singer/songwriters first full-length release, Own Side Now, represents a chance for Roses sound to find wider acceptance stateside. Dont be misled by the stylish image on the front cover, which might lead you to conclude that Rose is some sort of Zooey Deschanel-esque ingénue peddling overly precious goods; the Nashville native needs no M. Ward to fill in the artistic gaps for her. Roses own songwriting gifts are on ample display throughout Own Side Now, with lyrics that show a knack for poetic turns and artful understatement in equal measure -- a combination too seldom found in young songwriters work -- and humble but hummable melodies that make the most of her grounding in both alt-country and pop. Interestingly, while most of the album mines a gently twangy Americana feel, one of the most overtly country-ish moments comes with a cover of the Stevie Nicks-penned Fleetwood Mac track "Thats Alright." As it turns out, Roses lissome croon carries the tune with more élan than the original version, so maybe shes got something to say to the classic-rock crowd too.

The Stand-In : Allmusic album Review : In a perfect world, Caitlin Rose would be a big star, and indeed, she may well get there anyway, given that she has a sweet, pure, coy, sassy, assured, and beautiful voice, and writes wonderfully balanced pop-country songs that suggest Patsy Cline, Linda Ronstadt, and the commercial pop end of Fleetwood Mac all rolled together. On The Stand-In, her second full-length, Rose builds on 2010s critically applauded Own Side Now, and delivers a strong and assured collection of songs that poise themselves right at the junction of country and pop, which ought to assure her of some strong radio play across multiple formats, since songs like "I Was Cruel," the gorgeous "Only a Clown," the stunning and precise "Silver Sings," and the melodic and memorable "Everywhere I Go" could fit anywhere into anyones life. Rose isnt trying to be all traditional country here, or even all straight pop either, but somehow she effortlessly melts the two together, and this set is definitely a winner, full of solid playing and, of course, Roses easy and comfortingly wise vocals. In a perfect world, and even in an imperfect world, she deserves a wide and appreciative audience.
