Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
Allmusic Biography : Born Don Van Vliet, Captain Beefheart was one of modern musics true innovators. The owner of a remarkable four-and-one-half octave vocal range, he employed idiosyncratic rhythms, absurdist lyrics and an unholy alliance of free jazz, Delta blues, latter-day classical music and rock & roll to create a singular body of work virtually unrivalled in its daring and fluid creativity. While he never came even remotely close to mainstream success, Beefhearts impact was incalculable, and his fingerprints were all over punk, New Wave and post-rock. In their original incarnation, Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band were a blues-rock outfit which became staples of the teen-dance circuit; they quickly signed to A&M; Records, where the success of the single "Diddy Wah Diddy" earned them the opportunity to record a full-length album. Label president Jerry Moss rejected the completed record as "too negative," however, and a crushed Beefheart went into seclusion. After producer Bob Krasnow radically remixed 1968s hallucinatory Strictly Personal without Beefhearts approval, he again retired. At the same time, however, longtime friend Frank Zappa formed his own Straight Records, and he soon approached Van Vliet with the promise of complete creative control; a deal was struck, and after writing 28 songs in a nine-hour frenzy, Beefheart recorded the seminal 1969 double album Trout Mask Replica. After 1982s Ice Cream for Crow, Van Vliet again retired from music, this time for good; he returned to the desert, took up residence in a trailer and focused on painting. In 1985, he mounted the first major exhibit of his work, done in an abstract, primitive style reminiscent of Francis Bacon. Like his music, his art won wide acclaim, and some of his paintings sold for as much as $25,000. In the 1990s, he dropped completely from sight when he fell prey to multiple sclerosis. Van Vliet died of complications from multiple sclerosis on December 17, 2010 in California; he was 69 years old.

Safe as Milk : Allmusic album Review : Beefhearts first proper studio album is a much more accessible, pop-inflected brand of blues-rock than the efforts that followed in the late 60s -- which isnt to say that its exactly normal and straightforward. Featuring Ry Cooder on guitar, this is blues-rock gone slightly askew, with jagged, fractured rhythms, soulful, twisting vocals from Van Vliet, and more doo wop, soul, straight blues, and folk-rock influences than he would employ on his more avant-garde outings. "Zig Zag Wanderer," "Call on Me," and "Yellow Brick Road" are some of his most enduring and riff-driven songs, although theres plenty of weirdness on tracks like "Electricity" and "Abba Zaba." [Buddhas 1999 reissue of Safe as Milk contained restored artwork and seven bonus tracks.]

Strictly Personal : Allmusic album Review : Considered by many to be a substandard effort due to the circumstances of its release (producer Bob Krasnow, the owner of Blue Thumb, the label which debuted with this album, remixed the album while Don Van Vliet and crew were off on a European tour, adding extraneous sound effects like heartbeats and excessive use of psychedelic-era clichés like out-of-phase stereo panning and flanging), 1968s Strictly Personal is actually a terrific album, every bit the equal of Safe As Milk and Trout Mask Replica. Opening with "Ah Feel Like Ahcid," an a cappella blues workout with its roots in Son Houses "Death Letter," the brief (barely 35 minutes) album is at the same time simpler and weirder than Safe As Milk had been. Working without another songwriter or arranger for the first time, Captain Beefheart strips his idiosyncratic blues down to the bone, with several of the songs (especially "Son of Mirror Man/Mere Man") having little in the way of lyrics or chords beyond the most primeval stomp. Krasnows unfortunate sound effects and phasing do detract from the album at points, but the strength of the performances, especially those of drummer John French, make his efforts little more than superfluous window dressing. Strictly Personal is a fascinating, underrated release.

Trout Mask Replica : Allmusic album Review : Trout Mask Replica is Captain Beefhearts masterpiece, a fascinating, stunningly imaginative work that still sounds like little else in the rock & roll canon. Given total creative control by producer and friend Frank Zappa, Beefheart and his Magic Band rehearsed the material for this 28-song double album for over a year, wedding minimalistic R&B, blues, and garage rock to free jazz and avant-garde experimentalism. Atonal, sometimes singsong melodies; jagged, intricately constructed dual-guitar parts; stuttering, complicated rhythmic interaction -- all of these elements float out seemingly at random, often without completely interlocking, while Beefheart groans his surrealist poetry in a throaty Howlin Wolf growl. The disjointedness is perhaps partly unintentional -- reportedly, Beefhearts refusal to wear headphones while recording his vocals caused him to sing in time with studio reverberations, not the actual backing tracks -- but by all accounts, the music and arrangements were carefully scripted by the Captain (aided by John "Drumbo" French), which makes the results even more remarkable. As one might expect from music so complex and, to many ears, inaccessible, the influence of Trout Mask Replica was felt more in spirit than in direct copycatting, as a catalyst rather than a literal musical starting point. However, its inspiring reimagining of what was possible in a rock context laid the groundwork for countless future experiments in rock surrealism, especially during the punk/new wave era.

Lick My Decals Off, Baby : Allmusic album Review : Produced by Captain Beefheart himself, Lick My Decals Off, Baby was a further refining and exploration of the musical ideas posited on Trout Mask Replica. As such, the imaginative fervor of Trout Mask is toned down somewhat, but in its place is an increased self-assurance; the tone of Decals is also a bit darker, examining environmental issues in some songs rather than simply concentrating on surreal wordplay. Whatever the differences, the jagged, complex rhythms and guitar interplay continue to amaze. Those wanting to dig deeper after the essential Trout Mask Replica are advised to begin doing so here.

Mirror Man : Allmusic album Review : Originally, Captain Beefheart & the Magic Bands second album was intended to be a double-album set called "It Comes to You in a Plain Brown Wrapper." Although 1968s Strictly Personal has the same artwork that was mooted for the double album, its a single disc. As part of the same post-Trout Mask Replica closet-cleaning that led to Buddah (the parent company of Blue Thumb Records, which released Strictly Personal) reissuing Safe As Milk as Dropout Boogie in the U.K. in 1970, the label released Mirror Man, the second disc that was intended for the Plain Brown Wrapper release. Recorded in November 1967 (an odd misprint on the sleeve claims it was recorded in 1965, when the band barely existed), the four lengthy tracks on Mirror Man are even more simplistic and primal than those on Strictly Personal. All four are worthwhile, but the key tracks are "Tarotplane Blues," a free-form jam in which Beefheart jumbles together the lyrics of at least half a dozen blues standards into a stream-of-consciousness ramble (adding musette and harmonica for good measure) as the Magic Band vamps on a slide guitar-based, two-chord groove for over 19 minutes, and the similarly expansive "Mirror Man," one of the key tracks of Beefhearts entire career. Probably the catchiest tune Beefheart ever wrote, "Mirror Man" has an almost funky, hip-swaying groove, and theres a playful lightness to the way Beefheart chants the simplistic lyrics that prefigures the flights of fancy on Trout Mask Replica and Lick My Decals off, Baby. The remaining two tracks, "25th Century Quaker" and "Kandy Korn," are less essential but interesting enough. The revitalized and properly spelled Buddha Records reissued an expanded version of this album in 1999 as The Mirror Man Sessions, adding five alternate takes of songs that later appeared on Strictly Personal.

Clear Spot : Allmusic album Review : Producer Ted Templeman was a bit of a surprising choice given his firmly mainstream production credits, with the Doobie Brothers already under his belt and Van Halen lurking in the near future. As it turned out, such a combination led to a better-working fusion than might be expected, making one wonder why in the world Clear Spot wasnt more of a commercial success than it was. The sound is great throughout, and the feeling is of the coolest bar-band in town, not to mention one that could eat all the patrons for breakfast if it felt like it. Consequently, fans of the fully all-out side of Beefheart might find the end result not up to snuff, but those less concerned with pushing back all borders all the time will enjoy his unexpected blend of everything tempered with a new accessibility. "Nowadays a Womans Got to Hit a Man," besides having a brilliant title, shows the balance perfectly -- Van Vliet serves up his rough asides with all his expected wit and sass, while the Magic Band trade off notes here and there just so. At the same time, the track is strong blues-rock that doesnt pander, with a particularly fierce solo thanks to Zoot Horn Rollo. "My Head Is My Only House Unless It Rains" is a great love song, the softer arrangement saved from being too off by Beefhearts delivery. Other winners include the title track, a sharp combination of an off-kilter arrangement for a straightforward melody, the great shaggy-dog story of "Golden Birdies," and "Big Eyed Beans from Venus," a fantastically strange piece of aggression.

Unconditionally Guaranteed : Allmusic album Review : The most reviled album of Captain Beefhearts entire career, 1974s ironically titled Unconditionally Guaranteed unfortunately largely deserves its negative reputation. Recorded in the U.K. as the first album of Captain Beefhearts contract with Virgin Records, its also the last album that features any members of the Trout Mask Replica-era band, notably guitarists Zoot Horn Rollo and Alex St. Clair, plus former Mothers of Invention percussionist Art Tripp. Rather like Van Morrisons later album, A Period of Transition, Unconditionally Guaranteed is clearly a deliberate attempt by the Captain to restrain his more peculiar tendencies in search of a wider audience. As might be expected, the wider audience didnt show up, and his longtime fans were put off by the albums more commercial facets. Its not an entirely useless album, as the tunes do have some of the blues-rock punch thats at the root of Beefhearts work, and the lyrics, mostly declarations of love for his wife, Jan Van Vliet, who receives co-writing credit with producer Andy DiMartino on all ten tracks, seem heartfelt enough. The problem is that DiMartinos production and arrangements are flaccid and dull, and Beefheart (purposely) sings as if hes half asleep throughout. Even Captain Beefheart himself disowns this record.

Bluejeans & Moonbeams : Allmusic album Review : About the best one can say about 1974s Bluejeans & Moonbeams is that its not as bad as his other release of the year, Unconditionally Guaranteed. In fact, there are two tracks, the pretty reverie "Observatory Crest" and the stomping blues-rocker "Party of Special Things to Do," that are actually quite good. The rest of the album, however, is fairly dire. Recorded with anonymous studio musicians who are clearly out of their league and glossed to a soul-less polish by producer Andy DiMartino, Bluejeans & Moonbeams never catches fire even at its best, and its worst tracks -- those would be "Pompadour Swamp" and the utterly wretched proto-disco "Captains Holiday" -- are the worst things that have ever borne the Captain Beefheart name. Captain Beefheart would eventually return with the revitalized Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) in 1978, but Bluejeans & Moonbeams sounds like a tired and cynical make-work project.

Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) : Allmusic album Review : So titled because the original album, simply titled Bat Chain Puller, had to be ditched and rerecorded after a legal tuzzle involving Frank Zappas manager, Shiny Beast turned out to be manna from heaven for those feeling Beefheart had lost his way on his two Mercury albums. Then again, what else could be assumed with a song titled "Tropical Hot Dog Night" that sounds like what happened when Beefheart encountered Miami disco and decided to make something of it? When it comes to singing, though, hes still the atypical growler, snarler and more of lore, conjuring up more wonderfully odd lyrical stories than can easily be measured, while the album as a whole gets steadily more and more bent. "You Know Youre a Man" is at once straightforward and incredibly weird when it comes to love and gender, while other standouts include "Bat Chain Puller," a steady chugger that feels like a goofy death march, and the nervy freak of "Owed TAlex." As for the Magic Band in general, keyboardist Eric Drew Feldman, guitarists Jeff Tepper and Richard Redus and drummer Robert Williams lay down the business with appropriately gone aplomb, as a listen to "Suction Prints" will demonstrate.

Doc at the Radar Station : Allmusic album Review : Generally acclaimed as the strongest album of his comeback, and by some as his best since Trout Mask Replica, Doc at the Radar Station had a tough, lean sound owing partly to the virtuosic new version of the Magic Band (featuring future Pixies sideman Eric Drew Feldman, New York downtown-scene guitarist Gary Lucas, and a returning John "Drumbo" French, among others) and partly to the clear, stripped-down production, which augmented the Captains basic dual-guitar interplay and jumpy rhythms with extra percussion instruments and touches of Shiny Beasts synths and trombones. Many of the songs on Doc either reworked or fully developed unused material composed around the time of the creatively fertile Trout Mask sessions, which adds to the spirited performances. Even if the Captains voice isnt quite what it once was, Doc at the Radar Station is an excellent, focused consolidation of Beefhearts past and then-present.

Ice Cream for Crow : Allmusic album Review : With yet one final Magic Band lineup in place, featuring Richard Snyder on bass and Cliff Martinez on drums alongside returning vets Jeff Moris Tepper and Gary Lucas, Beefheart put the final touch on his recording career to date with Ice Cream for Crow. Its a last entertaining blast of wigginess from one of the few truly independent artists in late 20th century pop music, with humor, skill, and style all still intact (as even the song titles like "Semi-Multicoloured Caucasian" and "Cardboard Cutout Sundown" show). With the Magic Band turning out more choppy rhythms, unexpected guitar lines, and outré arrangements, Captain Beefheart lets everything run wild as always, with successful results. Sometimes he sounds less like the blues shouter of lore and more of a spoken word artist with an attitude, thus the stuttering flow of "The Host the Ghost the Most Holy." "Hey Garland, I Dig Your Tweed Coat" is even more entertainingly outrageous, Beefhearts addictive if near impenetrable ramble about tobacco juice and straw hats and more backed by an insanely great arrangement. Magic Band members each get chances to shine one way or another -- "Evening Bell" in particular demonstrates why Lucas went on to later solo renown, a complex, suddenly shifting solo instrumental that sits somewhere between background music and head-scratching "how did he do that?" intrigue.

The Spotlight Kid / Clear Spot : Allmusic album Review : This two-fer compiles two Beefheart albums originally released in 1972. The Spotlight Kid was a stripped-down, slide-guitar-filled move toward Beefhearts beloved Delta blues, dark in outlook and more traditional in approach, although it was still distinctly Beefhearts take on the blues. Clear Spot was more typical of Beefhearts earlier work with the Magic Band, although it too was musically simpler, as well as thematically brighter.

The Mirror Man Sessions : Allmusic album Review : The Mirror Man Sessions features the complete remastered contents of Mirror Man, albeit in a resequenced running order, and fills out the rest of the CD with a number of bonus tracks taken from additional recordings, both finished and unfinished, made around the same time for what would have been a double album titled It Comes to You in a Plain Brown Wrapper. As a listening experience, the package will appeal more to those who value the instrumental Beefheart; the Mirror Man album is, of course, essentially a 50-plus-minute jam session, containing as it does only four songs, and the bonus tracks -- many of which appeared on the One Way labels reissue of Safe as Milk -- mostly consist of jams and instrumentals which push the boundaries of conventional blues-rock, with a Beefheart vocal tossed in here and there. Some may miss Beefhearts surreal poetry, gruff vocals, and/or free jazz influence, while others may find it fascinating to hear the Magic Band simply letting go and cutting loose.

Grow Fins: Rarities (1965-1982) : Allmusic album Review : An unprecedented project in the rock field: a five-CD box set of unreleased material by a cult artist that never had anything close to a chart hit. Of course Captain Beefheart is the ultimate cult artist, and one with a following so rabid (if limited) that the compilation has a wider audience than many would anticipate. Despite the impressive chronological span and variety of demos, live performances, backing tracks, and outtakes, be cautioned that this is not a best-of or ad hoc career overview. A good deal of the tracks (some of which have long been available on bootleg) are of slightly substandard or low fidelity, and Beefhearts most significant work is ultimately contained on his numerous official releases. However, this is an important addition to his catalog, and one that many of his fanatics will find essential, though it wont do much to convert the casual fan due to the difficult nature of much of the material. Disc one, with live cuts and demos from 1966-67 that include a few songs recorded on Safe as Milk, is certainly the most interesting and accessible of the quintet. Disc two is more shambling and experimental, with its assortment of 1968 live performances. Disc three is for the hardcore: home-recorded (though in okay fidelity) run-throughs of Trout Mask Replica material from 1969, without vocals. Disc four is for the harder core: 12 more minutes of Trout Mask home sessions, plus enhanced-CD live performance footage from 1968-73. CD five is an interesting, erratic assortment of live, radio, demo, and work tape material from 1969-82, fidelity varying from good to poor. The liner notes are exceptionally detailed, with many first-hand quotes by band members and much historical narrative by frequent Magic Band drummer John French.

I'm Going to Do What I Wanna Do (live at My Fathers Place 1978) : Allmusic album Review : Had this powerful concert been issued somewhat more concurrent to its performance, the appreciation of Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band as an active recording and touring unit might have been radically altered. As it stands, the mid- to late ‘70s were not kind to Beefheart (aka Don Van Vliet) who became mired in litigation and ultimately forced to surrender the master tapes to a project titled Bat Chain Puller recorded at Frank Zappas Utility Research Muffin Kitchen studios. After reassembling a new version of the Magic Band, Beefheart emerged with his compromise to the preceding project -- now re-titled Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller). In support, the Magic Band were booked into small clubs throughout the States. On Saturday, November 19, 1978, the venue was the intimate confines of the 200-seat My Fathers Place in Roslyn, New York. Im Gonna Do What I Wanna Do documents the entire show from the only professional recording made of this tour. As fate would have it, a local FM station, WLIR, was running an open-reel, two-track machine in order to re-broadcast the show on December 11, 1978. This tape is the source for Im Gonna Do What I Wanna Do. Performing at what one can only surmise as the height of their powers is an enthusiastically frenetic Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band. They rip into every track with perpetual energy and restless verve. It is no surprise that the meat of the set is derived from Bat Chain Puller. However, there are several additional inclusions of note: "Abba Zabba," the proto-punk "Dropout Boogie," as well as the title track, all from Safe As Milk. From the indispensable Trout Mask Replica are "Old Fart at Play," "Veterans Day Poppy," as well as an intense and highly interactive "Well." Equally as incendiary are the readings of "Nowadays a Womans Gotta Hit a Man" and the surrealistic love song "Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Miles" from the Clear Spot album. This incarnation of the Magic Band performs with the vital and instinctual precision needed when attempting the multiple time signatures and highly improvisational nature of the Beefheart-led jams. The set is replete with examples, one of which is the searing interaction displayed during the waning moments of "Owed T Alex." In addition, several notable Magic Band members appeared in this touring unit, including former Zappa sidemen Bruce Fowler on trombone, and eclectic percussionist Robert Williams. Kudos to Rhino HandMade for not only realizing the importance of preserving and presenting this show, but also for delivering the goods in a most unusual and apt fashion. As the complete performance is over 83 minutes in length, producers were faced with over three minutes of audio beyond the capacity of a standard CD. Instead of editing (gasp! horrors!), they wisely chose to make the package a double-disc set. Taking that decision a step further, instead of using a full-length disc for less than a quarter-hours worth of audio, both encores were designated to the second CD, which is made to look like a three inch golf ball. That motif continues elsewhere within the packaging -- on the inner spine of the rear tray card, to be exact -- with the words "Captain Beefheart Calls It Gods Golfball." That quote is in reference to the graphics on the first CD, which is designed to look like planet earth from space (aka "Gods Golfball"). Brilliant!! It is this great attention to the minutiae and mindset of itstarget audience which place Rhino HandMade releases in a class of their own.

Dust Sucker : Allmusic album Review : Although every effort is made to convince consumers that Dust Sucker is the authorized release of Captain Beefheart & the Magic Bands "lost" version of Bat Chain Puller, it is not. Likewise, the remaining seven tracks can be traced from various spurious (read: bootleg) releases. The official story regards "master" tapes given to British concert promoter Roger Eagle by Don Van Vliet (aka Captain Beefheart) in 1976 -- the premise being that Van Vliet had asked Eagle to "hold" the tapes of these mostly unfinished recordings in England. Well, if eager enthusiasts can buy into that, then presumably the poor fidelity that identifies these so-called "masters" would most likely be considered inconsequential. Eventually, 11 of the dozen tracks intended for Bat Chain Puller would be issued on subsequent Captain Beefheart releases. Dust Sucker also includes the spoken word piece "Seam Crooked Sam," which may have similar origins as "Sam with a Showing Scalp Flat-Top" -- which surfaced around the same time and can be heard on the Frank Zappa collaboration Bongo Fury. This version of the Magic Band rips and snorts its way through the title track, "Brickbats," and a definitive "Floppy Boot Stomp." The latter features one of Van Vliets most inspired and frenetic vocals as it jumps between a spoken growl and his trademark gut-wrenching falsetto. Indeed, this is a very magic band, running with inspiration as its fuel. By the time the legit Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) was issued some three years later and after several multi-million dollar lawsuits were settled, the songs had become notably tempered. The bonus tracks were lifted from a variety of sources, most notably the New York Hot Dog Night CD -- conspicuous for its incorrect speed. The entire My Fathers Place performance from November 18, 1978, was legitimately released on Im Going to Do What I Wanna Do. Likewise, a sonically superior version of these recordings is available on another unauthorized collection, titled Original Bat Chain Puller + Safe as Milk [Mono Mix].

Live 'n' Rare : Allmusic album Review : A boon for collectors, Live n Rare is a sumptuous two-CD set that is true to its title, rounding up various live performances recorded between 1972 and 1980. All 26 of the tracks are drawn from British gigs, including Captain Beefheart & the Magic Bands headlining appearances at the Bickershaw and Knebworth festivals in 1972 and 1975, respectively. Falling between those two red-letter dates are tracks recorded at shows in Leicester in 1973 and London the following year, with the bulk, however, drawn from a concert in Manchester in 1980. Needless to say, then, this set features various lineups of the Magic Band, although the album gives no information on them, or anything else for that matter. Regardless, the hardcore Heartheads can reel off such details in their sleep, and thats precisely who this set is aimed at. Although the recording quality is patchy and the sound often weedy, its still mostly adequate enough to keep fans happy, although some may be a bit disgruntled by the hissing issuing throughout the Knebworth recordings. Bouncing back and forth through the years, careening from "Bass Solo," which indeed is exactly that, to the brief but pretty picked guitar solo that is "Flavor Bud Living" and the skittering "My Human Gets Me Blues," there are enough eccentric numbers here to keep fans fascinated. For those just digging into the Beefheart world, however, this is no place to start, nor is it a good investment for the casual fan familiar with little beyond Trout Mask Replica. But for the full-on Beefeater, its a delectable dish to be much enjoyed.
