Chic
Allmusic Biography : There is no doubt that Chic was discos greatest band. Working in a heavily producer-dominated field, they were most definitely a band. By the time Chic appeared in the late 70s, disco was already heading toward mainstream saturation and an inevitable downfall. Chic bucked the trend by stripping discos sound down to its basic elements. Specializing in stylish grooves with a uniquely organic sense of interplay, Chics sound was anchored by the scratchy "chucking"-style rhythm guitar of Nile Rodgers, the indelible, widely imitated, and sometimes outright stolen basslines of Bernard Edwards, and the powerhouse drumming of Tony Thompson. As producers, Rodgers and Edwards used keyboard and string embellishments economically, which kept the emphasis on rhythm. Chics distinctive approach not only resulted in some of the eras finest singles, including the number one hits "Le Freak" and "Good Times" -- only two of several classics off the platinum albums Cest Chic (1978) and Risqué (1979) -- but also helped create a template for funk, dance-pop, and hip-hop in the post-disco era. Not coincidentally, Rodgers and Edwards wound up as two of the most successful pop producers, and the sound they developed and perfected remained relevant for decades, acknowledged most notably with the duos induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Through the 2010s, Rodgers continued to lead Chic as a major live draw and took the act back to the studio for Its About Time (2018).

Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards met in 1970, when both were jazz-trained musicians fresh out of high school. Edwards had attended New Yorks High School for the Performing Arts and was working in a Bronx post office at the time, while Rodgers early career also included stints in the folk group New World Rising and the Apollo Theater house orchestra. Around 1972, Rodgers and Edwards formed a jazz-rock fusion group called the Big Apple Band. This outfit moonlighted as a backup band, touring behind smooth soul vocal group New York City in the wake of their 1973 hit "Im Doin Fine Now." After New York City broke up, the Big Apple Band hit the road with Carol Douglas for a few months, and Rodgers and Edwards decided to make a go of it on their own toward the end of 1976. At first they switched their aspirations from fusion to new wave, briefly performing as Allah & the Knife Wielding Punks, but quickly settled into dance music. They enlisted onetime LaBelle drummer Tony Thompson and vocalists Norma Jean Wright and Alfa Anderson, and changed their name to Chic in summer 1977 so as to avoid confusion with Walter Murphy & the Big Apple Band (whod just hit big with "A Fifth of Beethoven").

Augmented in the studio by keyboardists Raymond Jones and Rob Sabino, Chic recorded the demo single "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)" and shopped it around to several major record companies, all of which declined it. The small Buddah label finally released it as a 12" in late 1977, and as its club popularity exploded, Atlantic stepped in, signed the group, and re-released the single on a wider basis. "Dance, Dance, Dance" hit the Top Ten, peaking at number six, and made Chic one of the hottest new groups in disco. The band scrambled to put their self-titled first album together, and it spawned a minor follow-up hit, "Everybody Dance," in early 1978. At this point, Wright left to try her hand at a solo career (with assistance from Rodgers and Edwards), and was replaced by Luci Martin. It was a good time to come onboard; "Le Freak," the first single from sophomore album Cest Chic, was an out-of-the-box smash, spending five weeks on top of the charts toward the end of 1978 and selling over four-million copies (which made it the biggest-selling single in Atlantics history). Follow-up "I Want Your Love" reached number seven, cementing the groups new star status, and Cest Chic became one of the rare disco albums to go platinum.

1979s Risqué was another solidly constructed LP that also went platinum, partly on the strength of Chics second number one pop hit, "Good Times." "Good Times" may not have equaled the blockbuster sales figures of "Le Freak," but it was the bands most imitated track: Queens number one hit "Another One Bites the Dust" was a clear rewrite, and the Sugarhill Gang lifted the instrumental backing track wholesale for the first commercial rap single, "Rappers Delight," marking the first of many times that Chic grooves would be recycled into hip-hop records. Also in 1979, Rodgers and Edwards took on their first major outside production assignment, producing and writing the Sister Sledge smashes "We Are Family" and the oft-sampled "Hes the Greatest Dancer." This success, in turn, landed them the chance to work with Diana Ross on 1980s Diana album, and they wrote and produced "Upside Down," her first number one hit in years, as well as "Im Coming Out."

The disco fad was fading rapidly by that point, however, and 1980s Real People failed to go gold despite another solid performance by the band. Changing tastes put an end to Chics heyday, as Rodgers and Edwards outside production work soon grew far more lucrative, even despite aborted projects with Aretha Franklin and Johnny Mathis. Several more Chic LPs followed in the early 80s, with diminishing creative and commercial returns, and Rodgers and Edwards disbanded the group after completing Believer in 1983. Later that year, both recorded solo LPs. Hungry for respect in the rock mainstream (especially after accusations that they had ripped off Queen instead of the other way around), both Rodgers and Edwards sought out high-profile production and session work over the rest of the decade. Rodgers produced blockbuster albums like David Bowies Lets Dance, Madonnas Like a Virgin, and Mick Jaggers Shes the Boss. Edwards wasnt as prolific as a producer, but did join the one-off supergroup the Power Station along with Tony Thompson as well as Robert Palmer and members of avowed Chic fans Duran Duran; he later produced Palmers commercial breakthrough, Riptide. Edwards also worked with Rod Stewart (Out of Order), Jody Watley, and Tina Turner, while Rodgers other credits include the Thompson Twins, the Vaughan Brothers, INXS, and the B-52s comeback Cosmic Thing.

Rodgers and Edwards re-formed Chic in 1992 with new vocalists Sylver Logan Sharp and Jenn Thomas, and an assortment of session drummers in Thompsons place; they toured and released a new album, Chic-ism. In 1996, the reconstituted Chic embarked on a tour of Japan; sadly, on April 18, Edwards passed away in his Tokyo hotel room due to a severe bout of pneumonia. Rodgers continued to tour occasionally with a version of Chic. In 1999, his Sumthing Else label issued a recording of Edwards final performance with the band, Live at the Budokan. More importantly, Rodgers compiled The Chic Organization Box Set, Vol. 1: Savoir Faire, a four-disc anthology released in 2010. Rodgers career was boosted once more, through a string of collaborations with Duran Duran and Daft Punk, among others. He published a memoir, beat cancer, and kept the Chic name alive, primarily as a touring group. In 2018, two years after Rodgers and Edwards were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Rodgers completed and released a long-in-the-works Chic album, Its About Time.

C’est Chic : Allmusic album Review : Released in 1978, just as disco began to peak, Cest Chic and its pair of dancefloor anthems, "Le Freak" and "I Want Your Love," put Chic at the top of that dizzying peak. The right album at the right time, Cest Chic is essentially a rehash of Chic, the groups so-so self-titled debut from a year earlier. That first album also boasted a pair of floor-filling anthems, "Dance Dance Dance" and "Everybody Dance," and, like Cest Chic, it filled itself out with a mix of disco and ballads. So, essentially, Cest Chic does everything its predecessor did, except it does so masterfully: each side similarly gets its timeless floor-filler ("Le Freak," "I Want Your Love"), quiet storm come-down ("Savoir Faire," "At Last I Am Free"), feel-good album track ("Happy Man," "Sometimes You Win"), and moody album capper ("Chic Cheer," "[Funny] Bone"). Producers Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers were quite a savvy pair and knew that disco was as much a formula as anything. As evidenced here, they definitely had their fingers on the pulse of the moment, and used their perceptive touch to craft one of the few truly great disco albums. In fact, you could even argue that Cest Chic very well may be the definitive disco album. After all, countless artists scored dancefloor hits, but few could deliver an album this solid, and nearly as few could deliver one this epochal as well. Cest Chic embodies everything wonderful and excessive about disco at its pixilated peak. Its anything but subtle with its at-the-disco dancefloor mania and after-the-disco bedroom balladry, and Edwards and Rodgers are anything but whimsical with their disco-ballad-disco album sequencing and pseudo-jet-set Euro poshness. Chic would follow Cest Chic with "Good Times," the groups crowning achievement, but never again would Edwards and Rodgers assemble an album as perfectly calculated as Cest Chic.

Risqué : Allmusic album Review : Chic was very much in its prime when it recorded its third album, Risqué, which contained hits that ranged from "My Feet Keep Dancing" and "My Forbidden Lover" to the influential "Good Times." That feel-good manifesto is one of the first songs that comes to mind when one thinks of the disco era and the Jimmy Carter years, but Chics popularity certainly wasnt limited to the disco crowd. The fact that "Good Times" became the foundation for both the Sugarhill Gangs "Rappers Delight" and Queens "Another One Bites the Dust" tells you a lot -- it underscores the fact that Chic was influencing everyone from early rappers to art rockers. A group that many rock critics were so quick to dismiss was having an impact in many different areas. From hip-hoppers to new wavers in London and Manchester, Risqué was considered primary listening. And Risqué is impressive not only because of its up-tempo cuts, but also because of slow material that includes the lush "A Warm Summer Night" and the dramatic ballad "Will You Cry (When You Hear This Song)." Risqué is definitely among Chics essential albums.

Real People : Allmusic album Review : In the early 80s, Chics influence on other artists was hard to miss. Change, Fantasy, Luther Vandross, the Talking Heads, Grace Jones and Queen were among the many artists who were incorporating elements of the Chic sound. It was ironic and quite amusing to hear some members of the "Death to Disco!" brigade blaring Queens "Another One Bites the Dust" on their car stereos during the summer of 1980, for that funk-rock ditty was obviously based on "Good Times." But Chic itself was seeing its popularity start to fade, and fans were realizing that the group had reached its creative peak in the late 70s. Like other albums that Chic recorded in the early 80s, Real People is competent but less than essential. Diehard fans will find that while "Rebels Are We," "I Got Protection" and "Chip off the Old Block" are likable and catchy, they arent in a class with "Good Times" or "Le Freak." This is a decent album, but its also the work of a group that was past its prime.

Take It Off : Allmusic album Review : In 1981, a lot of rock & rollers were claiming that the disco era was officially over. Disco, of course, never really died -- a lot of the dance-pop, house music, Hi-NRG, and Latin freestyle that was recorded in the 80s and 90s was essentially disco -- but as far as many of the radio stations and record company A&R men of 1981 were concerned, disco was dead. And that was bad news for Chic, a group closely identified with the disco era. Even though a lot of Chics work had as much to do with funk and soul as it did with the Euro-disco sound, Chic was unable to live down its reputation as a disco group. But Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards gave it a try with 1981s Take It Off, an admirable, if uneven, project that finds the group downplaying the Euro-disco elements. With R&B and funk as the foundation, Chic tries to branch out by incorporating elements of pop-rock on "Your Love Is Canceled," and jazz on "Flash Back" and "So Fine" (which shouldnt be confused with the "So Fine" that Kashif produced for R&B singer Howard Johnson in 1982). In fact, a few of Rogers guitar solos give the impression that hed been listening to a lot of Wes Montgomery. But as likable as the LP is, it didnt contain a major hit -- the single "Stage Fright" only made it to #34 on Billboards R&B singles chart. And for a group that had enjoyed #1 pop and R&B smashes only two and three years earlier, that was certainly disappointing.

Tongue in Chic : Allmusic album Review : None of the albums that Chic recorded from 1980 to 1983 can be called essential, and none of them are in a class with Cest Chic or Risqué. Even so, they were generally respectable, and they didnt deserve to be ignored. When Tongue in Chic came out in 1982, the only people who were still buying Chics albums were its most diehard fans. Black radio no longer seemed to be interested, which is ironic because the R&B; charts of the early 80s were full of Chic-influenced groups (Change, High Fashion, Fantasy, among many others). Although Tongue In Chic isnt among the groups best albums and didnt contain any radio hits, it isnt a bad album either. "Hangin," "Chic (Everybody Say)," and "I Feel Your Love Comin On," demonstrated that Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards were still quite capable of providing infectious R&B;/funk grooves, and "City Lights" almost sounds like an example of early house music -- which isnt all that surprising when you consider that Marshall Jefferson and many other house icons were major Chic fans.

Believer : Allmusic album Review : If Prince and Shalamar -- two artists who made their recording debuts in the late 70s -- could be relevant to the urban contemporary scene of 1983 and even cross over to pop-rock/new wave audiences, why not Chic? Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards hoped that Chic could, which is why 1983s Believer finds the group updating its sound with generally appealing, if uneven, results. Using a lot more keyboards and drum machines and favoring a more high-tech production style, Rogers and Edwards sound like theyre trying hard to live down their reputation as a late 70s disco act. Urban contemporary considerations are strong, and some of the songs might have reached pop-rock and new wave audiences with the right promotion. The infectious "Party Everybody" contains more rapping than singing, and acknowledges hip-hops popularity, which is appropriate considering how often hip-hoppers have sampled Chic over the years. And even though Believer falls short of being a gem, you have to admire Chics ability to update its approach while continuing to sound incredibly distinctive. But the LP didnt contain any hit singles, and Believer would be Chics last album for Atlantic. Chic broke up in 1985, although they reunited for 1992s uneven Chic-ism and 1996s superb Live at the Budokhan (neither of which were big sellers). The ironic thing is that while Rodgers and Edwards were very much in demand as producers during the 80s (when Rodgers produced such superstars as Duran Duran, Madonna, David Bowie, and the B-52s, and Edwards worked with the Power Station, Rod Stewart, Robert Palmer, and Jody Watley, among others), Chic itself never returned to the top of the charts.

Dance, Dance, Dance: The Best of Chic : Allmusic album Review : You think disco was nothing more than assembly line funk and freeze-dried beats? Then you need to step into the crisp grooves and walloping boogie found on this stunning collection of Chics 70s recordings. Such hits as "Good Times," "Dance Dance Dance," and "Le Freak" used the stylistic innovations of James Brown and Sly Stone as a blueprint for a new era of funk. Bernard Edwards basslines are so provocative they seem to talk, while Nile Rodgers skeletal guitar runs hark back to Steve Croppers slashing style. Sure, the songs dont say much. Sure, the dance mixes collected here ramble on after about six minutes. But once you step into these grooves -- grooves that influenced an entire generation of artists from David Byrne to Prince -- you will realize that these were indeed good times.

Chic-ism : Allmusic album Review : "Doin That Thing to Me" contains a reference to the mythological wizard Merlin in its lyrics. By some strange twist of nature, mythology was certainly at work when those reviewing Chic-Ism on its release in 1992 dismissed it purely because Chic were old hats. In actuality, the worst thing about it is the cover. Chic-Ism certainly isnt likely to make album of the century listings, but as Chic albums go, its fine if a tad 80s, which is to be expected as it was recorded only two years into the 90s. What were critics expecting of Chic -- synthesizers à la Kraftwerk? Kicking in with the infectious "Chic Mystique," a little too long at six and a half minutes, its pretty much business as usual. This leads into "Your Love" and "Jusagroove," both keeping pace before slowing down for "One and Only One." "In It to Win It" is a perfect update of their New York disco-funk style, a recipe that bands like the Brand New Heavies emulated in later years. The last stretch of the album includes "High," a beauty that is close enough a slowed down "Good Times." "MMFTCF (Make My Funk the Chic Funk)" and a better edited reprise of "Mystique" conclude.

Everybody Dance : Allmusic album Review : In the early 80s, rock critic Don Waller described Chic as an "uptown version of Booker T. & the MGs" and some of his colleagues in the rock & roll press were outraged. To those who had a death-to-disco mentality, it was blasphemous to compare a disco favorite to the great Booker T. & the MGs. But Waller was right on the money; Chic was every bit as important and influential as those Stax legends. When youre listening to Everybody Dance -- a best-of CD that Rhino assembled in 1995 -- youre listening to grooves that influenced everyone from David Bowie, Queen, Duran Duran, and ABC to Madonna, Change, and Soul II Soul. From new wave to hip-hop to house, it is amazing how many people were affected by the distinctive Nile Rodgers/Bernard Edwards sound. This ten-track CD isnt the best Chic collection that Rhino has assembled; The Very Best of Chic, which Rhino put out in 2000, would be a better investment because it is slightly more generous (12 songs instead of ten) and offers comprehensive liner notes. Those who are making their first Chic purchase cant go wrong with The Very Best of Chic, although Everybody Dance certainly isnt bad. This disc boasts many of Chics essential late-70s hits, including "Le Freak," "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)," "I Want Your Love," "My Forbidden Lover," and "Good Times." Meanwhile, "Chip off the Old Block" (from 1980s Real People) and "Soup for One" fall short of essential but are still enjoyable. One could complain about the absence of "My Feet Keep Dancing," but all things considered, Everybody Dance has a lot going for it; The Very Best of Chic, however, has even more.

Live at the Budokan : Allmusic album Review : In the 90s, two albums resulted from various reunions of Chics co-founders/co-leaders Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards. The first was 1992s Chic-Ism, a decent though uneven studio project that had its moments but fell short of the excellence of classics like Cest Chic and Risqué. The other was Live at the Budokan, a gem that was recorded in Tokyo, Japan in April 1996 for the JT Super Producers series. Sadly, this concert would be Edwards last live appearance before his death, and for that reason, Budokan would be historically important even if Chic had given a mediocre performance that night. But this CD is far from mediocre. Rodgers and Edwards oversee an excellent band that includes, among others, singers Sylver Logan Sharp and Jill Jones, and drummer Omar Hakim -- and the sparks fly in a major way when this Chic lineup turns its attention to late-70s favorites like "Good Times" (which is combined with the Sugarhill Gangs "Rappers Delight"), "Le Freak," "Dance Dance Dance" and "I Want Your Love." Listeners will notice that on-stage these songs have a tougher, harder edge than they did in studio, and the same thing happens with the Sister Sledge classics "Hes the Greatest Dancer" and "We Are Family" (both of which find Sister Sledge joining Chic on-stage). An interesting surprise comes when Chic moves into rock territory and joins forces with Steve Winwood and Guns N Roses guitarist Slash for Jimi Hendrixs "Stone Free." When Rodgers was preparing to release Live at the Budokan on his Sumthing Else label, he decided against adding any overdubs or smoothing any of the rough edges. Clearly, he made the right decision.

The Very Best of Chic : Allmusic album Review : To the rock critics who dismissed Chics music as disposable and mindless back in the late 70s: it might seem like a stretch to say that Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards had as great an impact as Gamble & Huff, George Clinton, and the folks at Stax Records. But in fact, Chics music was that influential -- and its disco/funk/soul innovations would be having an impact long after the 70s ended. From Madonna, Change, and Queen, to Duran Duran, Soul II Soul, and ABC -- new wave, hip-hop, house, European Hi-NRG, Latin freestyle, and acid jazz -- you could write a book about all the artists who have been influenced by Chic. This collection, which came out in 2000 and spans 1977-1982, is full of grooves that prove to be anything but disposable. Most of Chics essential hits are provided, including "Good Times," "Le Freak," "Dance, Dance, Dance," "I Want Your Love," and "Everybody Dance." Less than essential, but still likable and decent, are early 80s recordings such as "Rebels Are We" from Real People, and "Stage Fright" from Take It Off. By 1980, Chic wasnt having as many hits and was feeling the sting of the death-to-disco movement. But disco never really died -- it simply changed its name to dance music and evolved into such forms as Hi-NRG, Latin freestyle and house. When that happened, Chics long-lasting influence was impossible to miss -- you could say that Chics influence lasted a lot longer than Chic itself. For those who need a concise introduction to Chics legacy and want to hear some of R&Bs most influential grooves, The Very Best of Chic is highly recommended.

Chic : Allmusic album Review : When Chics self-titled debut album came out in 1978, many rock critics gave it very negative reviews and failed to see just how rhythmically and harmonically exciting Chics blend of funk, soul, and Euro-disco was. But one critic who often gave Chic favorable coverage was Don Waller, who hit the nail on the head when he exalted the band as "an uptown version of Booker T & the MGs." It was a most insightful analogy -- Chics music was a lot sleeker than Booker T & the MGs raw, instrumental Memphis soul, but like Booker T., the Niles Rodgers/Bernard Edwards team turned out some of the most infectious and influential R&B; party grooves of their era. Although not quite as strong as Chics next two albums -- Cest Chic and Risqué -- would be, this highly enjoyable album put the group on the map commercially thanks to the infectious hits "Dance, Dance, Dance" and "Everybody Dance." Some rock critics saw Chic as just another faceless disco production, but, in fact, the opposite is true -- with this album, Chic fashioned a very distinctive and recognizable sound that proved to be as influential in its era as Booker T & the MGs were in theirs. The sound that Chic established with this album was one that everyone from Queen and ABC to Sister Sledge, the Sugarhill Gang, and Madonna would benefit from.

Ultimate Chic : Allmusic album Review : Ultimate Chic is a 15-track anthology from Warner France. It has its flaws. Rather than include the original version of the groups first single, "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)," the compilers chose a Pal Joey mix which is fine but no substitute. Additionally, theres a Jazzy Jeff remix of "Good Times" where a more representative album cut could have been placed. Much of the groups most successful material is here, including the original "Good Times," "Le Freak," "My Forbidden Lover," and "Soup for One," and other highlights released through 1992s Chic-Ism. The Very Best of Chic, released in 2000, remains the best single-disc Chic compilation.

The Definitive Groove Collection : Allmusic album Review : There was a need for a smartly selected two-disc Chic compilation. The Definitive Groove Collection plugs that gap. Ardent disco fanatics who arent quite crazed enough to obtain all the albums, and yet not completely sated by a single-disc anthology, would do well to pick it up. As with a lot of the other volumes in Rhinos The Definitive Groove Collection and The Definitive Soul Collection series, this set is basically an update and combination of two single-disc sets that were released during the 90s and early 2000s. It contains every Chic song that touched a chart in the U.S., from "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)" through 1992s "Your Love" and "Chic Mystique." And, crucially, there are a few cases (including "Good Times," "At Last I Am Free," and "I Want Your Love") where it favors full-length versions over single edits. The Very Best of Chic, released in 2000 by Rhino, remains the best single-disc introduction, but setting yourself back a few extra bucks to get a more extensive overview would not be an unwise decision.

Up All Night : Allmusic album Review : Released in 2013 by Rhino U.K., The Chic Organization: Up All Night was clearly timed to coordinate with the mainstream re-emergence of the great Nile Rodgers, whose role in Daft Punks "Get Lucky" -- as well as the smash hits parent album -- was crucial. This was issued at the same time as a set of similar length and look, parenthetically dubbed the Greatest Hits edition. The two sets share 20 cuts, ranging from Chic hits such as "Le Freak" and "Good Times" to outside productions for the likes of Sister Sledge, Diana Ross, and Carly Simon, as well as part of a shelved Johnny Mathis session (represented with the decent "I Love My Lady," not contained on The Chic Organization Box Set, released in 2010). The cuts here that are not on the Greatest Hits edition include Sister Sledges "Frankie," the 12" version of Madonnas "Like a Virgin," Duran Durans "Notorious," and the seven-minute "The Chic Mini Mix." Another cut not available on the other set is a 15-minute medley, recorded at the 2013 Glastonbury Festival, that incorporates "Lets Dance," "Like a Virgin," and "Notorious." While these volumes could be seen as opportunistic, a great deal of thought and love was put into them.
