Allmusic Biography : Chip Taylor will probably always be known as the songwriter who wrote "Wild Thing" and "Angel of the Morning." Born John Wesley Voight (actor Jon Voight is his older brother), Taylor began playing country music while still in high school in Yonkers, New York. After finishing high school, he briefly took up his fathers occupation, becoming a professional golfer. But he suffered a wrist injury and turned back to music. In 1962, he signed to Warner Bros., and his single "Here I Am" bubbled just under the Billboard Hot 100 in November. He became more successful, however, as a songwriter, scoring his first hit with "I Cant Let Go" (co-written with Al Gorgoni), which was recorded by the Hollies for a chart entry in March 1966. (Linda Ronstadt revived the song for a Top 40 hit in 1980.) Then came the simplistic but unforgettable "Wild Thing," recorded by another British group, the Troggs, who topped the charts with it in July, creating a much-covered standard. A parody by "Senator Bobby" (comedian Bill Minkin) hit the Top 40 in January 1967, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience performed the song at the Monterey Pop Festival in June. Meanwhile, Taylor continued to write hits: "Make Me Belong to You" (co-written with Billy Vera) hit the Top 40 for Barbara Lewis in August 1966; "I Can Make It with You" was cut by both the Pozo-Seco Singers and Jackie DeShannon, with the Pozo-Seco Singers version winning out and hitting the Top 40 in October 1966; the American Breed recorded "Step Out of Your Mind" for a Top 40 hit in July 1967; and Billy Vera & Judy Clay hit the Top 40 with "Country Girl City Man" (co-written with Ted Daryll) in March 1968. But Taylors second standard was "Angel of the Morning," a ballad about premarital sex that pushed the boundaries of acceptable subject matter in pop music. Merrilee Rush & the Turnabouts recorded the song, and it reached the Top Ten in June 1968; Juice Newton revived it in 1981 for a second Top Ten hit and a gold record. With Gorgoni, Taylor wrote "Ill Hold Out My Hand," recorded by the Clique for a Top 40 hit in December 1969. Also in 1969, Janis Joplin recorded Taylor and Jerry Ragavoys "Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)" and released it as the lead-off track on her debut solo album, I Got Dem Ol Kozmic Blues Again Mama! Taylor had not given up his ambition to be a recording artist himself. He and Gorgoni recorded together under the name Just Us, then Taylor cut a series of solo albums in the 1970s, including This Side of the Big River, which reached the country charts in 1975, as did five Taylor singles between 1975 and 1977. His songwriting efforts also found favor in Nashville, with "Sweet Dream Woman" (co-written with Gorgoni) reaching the country Top Ten for Waylon Jennings in 1972 and Anne Murrays recording of "Son of a Rotten Gambler" in the country Top Ten in 1974. Nevertheless, Taylor gave up the music business and became a professional gambler, not returning to music until 1993 when he joined a national songwriters tour. He released a new album, The Living Room Tapes, in 1997, followed by Seven Days in May in 1998, The London Sessions Bootleg in 2000, Black and Blue America in 2001, and a collaboration with Carrie Rodriguez, Lets Leave This Town, in 2002. A sampler mini-album drawing tracks from several ongoing recording projects, New Songs of Freedom appeared in 2008. Also appearing in 2008 was the ornately packaged Songs from a Dutch Tour, which featured both an autobiographically themed trade paperback book and a new CD of recorded material. The autobiographical tenet followed with the release of Taylors 2009 album, Yonkers, NY, an earthy collection of new songs and stories about his hometown and family. In 2011, Taylor resurfaced with Rock and Roll Joe: A Tribute to the Unsung Heroes of Rock n Roll, a collection of covers with John Platania and Kendel Carson. Taylor has always been mercurial, and he shifted gears yet again in 2011. Via Smithsonian Folkways, he released his first childrens album, Golden Kids Rules, accompanied by his three granddaughters. Becoming increasingly more prolific, Taylor managed to deliver five new albums over the next five years including 2012s wry F**k All the Perfect People, 2014s The Little Prayers Trilogy, and 2016s Little Brothers, all on his Train Wreck label. The hot streak continued in February 2017 with A Song I Can Live With, which featured contributions from multi-instrumentalist Goran Grini, guitarist and longtime associate John Platania, and pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz.

This Side of the Big River : Allmusic album Review : After writing three standards of the 60s -- the garage rock classic "Wild Thing," made famous by the Troggs; the soft pop ballad "Angel of the Morning," originally cut by Merrilee Rush; and "Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)," made famous by Big Brother & the Holding Company -- Chip Taylor began a solo recording career in the 70s, signing to Warner Bros. after releasing one rock-oriented album, Gasoline, on Buddah in 1971. His first album, rather ironically (and quite funnily) named Chip Taylors Last Chance, appeared in 1973 but it wasnt a rock or a pop album: it was a country album, which signaled a return to his roots in a way, since he sang country music at the beginning of his career. Neither Last Chance nor the following years Some of Us were hits, but the label stuck with him through one more record, 1975s This Side of the Big River. This is also a country album -- indeed, it was the only one of his records to sell well enough to appear on the country charts -- but its not a conventional country record by any means. Its an appealingly sleepy, meandering record, drifting from languid ballads to laid-back country-rockers, but its sonic palette is broader than that suggests -- the Gram Parsons-styled "Ive Been Tied" is punctuated with horns; the slow, slow "Holding Me Together" is built upon electric pianos and mournful steel guitar -- and the album recalls California singer/songwriters as often as it does Nashville. It could be pegged as progressive country, since there are some echoes of Kris Kristofferson and Mickey Newbury here, but Taylor isnt an outlaw; hes an outsider, crafting his own idiosyncratic music that doesnt quite fit into any real specific category -- which, of course, is its appeal. First and foremost, its a subtle songwriters record, but its a songwriters record where the most immediate tune is a cover -- a rather rowdy version of Johnny Cashs "Big River" that lends the LP its title. Its taken from a live radio session, as are "John Tuckers on the Wagon Again" and "Youre Alright, Charlie," and all three feel different -- "Big River" has the kick of a concert, "John Tucker" is as conversational as a story, "Youre Alright, Charlie" is hushed and intimate -- but boast a loose, human quality that presents a nice contrast to the studio cuts, which are professional in the best sense: accomplished without being polished, highlighting the skills of Taylor and his crew, since they make these reflective songs feel warm, comfortable, and lived-in. In fact, This Side of the Big River may be a little bit too broken-in -- it rolls so slow and easy, his songs so subtle and solidly constructed, that it takes some effort on the part of the listener to get within its little details, whether its in the lyrics or the texture. But give it a little time and This Side of the Big River is not only quite charming, its rather moving. Taylor says in Richie Unterbergers liner notes to the 2006 Collectors Choice reissue, "If you really want to know me, this is the album that will get you to know me" -- and once you get to know this record, you will feel like you know what Chip Taylor was all about as a songwriter and musician.

Hit Man : Allmusic album Review : Theres something about singer/songwriters doing their own material, and while Chip Taylor is one of the greats (and produced one of the greats, Neil Diamond), he is in an industry where his legacy puts him a few steps ahead of P.F.Sloan in terms of success, but far short of the name recognition enjoyed by a Carole King (a status she deserves, as does Taylor). This is a great -- but incomplete -- collection of songs that were and still are highly influential. "Try Just a Little Bit Harder" might not be as notorious as "Wild Thing" or "Angel of the Morning" but, being a Janis Joplin signature, it sure got into a lot of homes. When Clive Davis played a rare Joplin performance on The Midnight Special television program, he chose a version of "Try" where Pearl just exploded across the stage. Taylors version here is more laid-back, but so absolutely essential for two reasons -- because it was so vital to Joplins solo career, and because it is such a tremendous song on its own. Not the biggest hit in Linda Ronstadts career, "I Cant Let Go" is one of her more exciting ones, and its great to hear the creator take it on, as well as "Any Way That You Want Me," a song covered by Evie Sands and the Troggs. Gadfly Records does a good job here, and the liner notes have chart information as well as anecdotes from Taylor on how and why some of the tunes were written. His performances are excellent and deserving of chart action on their own, or at least some serious adult alternative radio airplay. There are 13 selections and, though some important compositions are missing -- the American Breeds "Step Out of Your Mind," the Cliques "Ill Hold Out My Hand" from the album that launched their Tommy James hit "Sugar on Sunday," and Taylors own 1962 minor chart entry "Here I Am" -- the sincerity in delivery and the historic importance make this a textbook you can learn from and enjoy. Hit Man is an excellent resume of a vital creative force in music, and could keep young minds focused if used in classrooms to teach the art of painting a song. Apart from that, it is a monster album that truly deserves platinum success.

Let's Leave This Town : Allmusic album Review : This new release by this legendary Texas songwriter is a far piece from the Troggs Wild Thing, but it is still the same person who has worked his way around the music business. This is his teaming with up-and-coming fiddler/singer Carrie Rodriguez to bring a slew of new songs to the public, some of which are destined to become hits in the country & western music scene. He wrote, or co-wrote, ten of the 12 tunes here, and there isnt a wormy one in the package. Before the focus turns too much to this legend, take a listen to the stellar and sensitive fiddling this budding new singer is capable of producing. "Theres a Hole in the Midnight" has a feel to it that calls back the best of sad country songs without being disgustingly maudlin; oh, its a weeper all right -- however, that line of gush is not crossed. There is a good mix in the tempos of the tunes and this disc never gets stuck in any rut. They have a remarkable group of musicians playing with them that go a long way to bring out the best in his music, including former Van Morrison stalwart John Platinia on electric guitar and Fairport Conventions Dave Mattacks handling the drums. However, this is their disc and it is they who make it dazzle as a bright star in that lonesome Texas prairie night.

The Trouble With Humans : Allmusic album Review : Making music is an unpredictable business. Songwriter Chip Taylor and singer Carrie Rodriguez liked the way their voices sounded together, so they decided to record Lets Leave This Town together in 2002. While the album wasnt bad, it failed to convey that magic ingredient that takes the music to the next level. The Trouble With Humans is a much more natural effort, with a lovely bare-bones production and relaxed performances by the duo. As a matter of fact, The Trouble With Humans sounds a lot like a demo that couldnt be improved on. On the title track and "I Need a Wall," both singers take things real slow, softly holding forth to the sounds of an acoustic guitar, quiet drum kit, and lonesome steel. Rodriguezs vocals are much more impressive here than on the duos debut. Her off the cuff downhearted woman gasp hits the listener deep in the gut on "Dirty Little Texas Story," and reminds one of Lucinda Williams. Taylors lyrics are sex-obsessed here as always, but they nonetheless sound right when he and Rodriguez harmonize together, as though the words somehow derive from their life experiences. "We Come Up Shining" is the bonus track and serves as a pleasing closer to a finely crafted album. The Trouble With Humans will convince anyone who wasnt quite sure about Lets Leave This Town to give Rodriguez and Taylor another listen.

Unglorious Hallelujah : Allmusic album Review : The latest album from Chip Taylor is actually a double disc: one disc of more carefully crafted works (Unglorious Hallelujah), and one of more spur-of-the-moment creations (Red, Red Rose & Other Songs of Love, Pain & Destruction). Both are quite good, straightforward singer/songwriter-esque pieces with a heavy dose of blues and folk mixed in. The mood is alternately tender and somber, rarely getting too excited about anything. In that sense, it tends to lean a bit toward similarities with some of Dylans Love and Theft album. These are songs of regret, of reminiscence, and sometimes just of love. The playing from the studio band is good throughout, fitting the moods and staying relatively minimalist as the music seems to call for. Duet vocals with Carrie Rodriguez also fit the bill nicely, adding what almost seems a country feel from time to time. A very nice album for fans of the classic songwriters, with a touch of age and experience to influence the content.

Live From the Ruhr Triennale : Allmusic album Review : If youre a fan of roots rock and Texas country music, then this disc will kind of take your breath away before you even hear a note. The pairing of singer/songwriter Chip Taylor and fiddler/singer Carrie Rodriguez has been an inspired one ever since they started making albums together in 2002. On this live album (recorded in Germany at the triennial celebration of the Ruhr region) they are joined by a band that includes pedal steel player Greg Leisz as well as -- get this -- famed jazz/country/experimental guitarist Bill Frisell. The music is by turns soulful and rollicking, with dips into the old book of country standards (Merle Haggards "Today I Started Loving You Again," Johnny Cashs "Big River") and the slightly less old book of rock & roll standards (Chuck Berrys "Maybellene," Taylors own "Wild Thing"). Most of the remainder are relatively contemporary songs written by Taylor, and several things jump out at you about them: Taylors own strong voice, Rodriguezs gorgeously reedy harmony vocals, and the almost otherworldly beauty of the live arrangements. A good portion of the credit for that beauty goes to Frisell, who is at his best in a setting like this -- spinning out his heartbreakingly lovely guitar lines in ringing, shimmering layers. But even if he were absent, songs like the Taylor/Rodriguez duet "Once Again One Day You Will Be Mine" and the quasi-religious "Oh Set a Light" would stand beautifully on their own. Not to mention Rodriguezs sturdily rocking arrangement of the traditional fiddle tune "Elzics Farewell" and the two numbers that close out the set -- a quiet version of "Angel of the Morning" (yes, thats a Taylor song as well) and a startlingly sexy version of "Wild Thing." Brilliant.

New Songs of Freedom : Allmusic album Review : Venerable Texas songwriter Chip Taylor, who penned such enduring classics as the primal garage punk prototype "Wild Thing" and the sublime and sensual "Angel of the Morning," has had a renaissance of sorts in the past couple of years, emerging as a sort of wise country philosopher whose hushed, unhurried vocal style gives his frequently politically poignant songs a kind of back porch élan. New Songs of Freedom isnt a new album exactly, but more like a sampler, including tracks from various upcoming projects Taylor is currently working on along with a handful of tracks from his now out of print Black and Blue America album from 2001. It all adheres pretty well, though, and works as a coherent sequence in spite of its varied sources. The opener, "Dance with a Hole in Your Shoe," has the feel of a 50s beat poem, albeit recited by a wizened country cowboy after a long day riding fences, and it probably shouldnt work, but it does. Another striking track here is "Former American Soldier," which recounts the forgotten story of the Lao soldiers of Vientiane who fought alongside the U.S. in Laos during the Vietnam War and then were unceremoniously abandoned. Its a powerful, chilling song and underscores Taylors belief that songs should be more than casual entertainment. All in all, this "mini-album" has its own internal logic, and while it might be a placeholder for projects Taylor has in the pipeline, it still manages to speak with a voice of its own.
