Allmusic Biography : Few new wave groups were as popular as Culture Club. During the early 80s, the group racked up seven straight Top Ten hits in the U.K. and six Top Ten singles in the U.S. with their light, infectious pop-soul. Though their music was radio-ready, what brought the band stardom was Boy George, the groups charismatic, cross-dressing lead singer. George dressed in flamboyant dresses and wore heavy makeup, creating a disarmingly androgynous appearance that created a sensation on early MTV. George also had a biting wit and frequently came up with cutting quips that won Culture Club heavy media exposure in both America and Britain. Although closely aligned with the new romantics -- they were both inspired by Northern soul and fashion -- Culture Club had a sharper pop sense than their peers, and consequently had a broader appeal. However, their time in the spotlight was brief. Not only could they not withstand the changing fashions of MTV, but the group was fraught with personal tensions, including Boy Georges drug addiction. By 1986, the group had broken up, leaving behind several singles that rank as classics of the new wave era. The son of a boxing club manager, Boy George (b. George ODowd, June 14, 1961), found himself attracted to the glam rock of T. Rex and David Bowie as a teenager. During the post-punk era of the late 70s, he became a regular at London new romantic clubs. Along with his cross-dressing friends Marilyn and Martin Degville (a future member of Sigue Sigue Sputnik), George became well-known around the London underground for his extravagant sense of style, and Malcolm McLaren invited him to join an early version of Bow Wow Wow. George briefly appeared with the band as Lieutenant Lush before leaving to form In Praise of Lemmings with bassist Mikey Craig (b. February 15, 1960). Once guitarist Jon Suede joined the group, they changed their name to Sex Gang Children. Within a few months, the band met Jon Moss (b. September 11, 1957), a professional drummer who had previously played with Adam & the Ants and the Damned. By 1981, Boy George had renamed the group Culture Club and Suede had been replaced by Roy Hay (b. August 12, 1961), a former member of Russian Bouquet. Toward the end of the year, they recorded a set of demos for EMI, but the label turned them down. Early in 1982, the band landed a contract with Virgin Records, releasing "White Boy" in the spring. Neither "White Boy" or its follow-up, "Im Afraid of Me," made the charts but the British music and fashion press began running articles about Boy George. In the fall, Culture Club released their breakthrough single, "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me," which rocketed to the top of the charts. Shortly afterward, the bands debut, Kissing to Be Clever, climbed to number five on the U.K. charts and the non-LP single "Time (Clock of the Heart)" reached number three. Early in 1983, Kissing to Be Clever and "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" began climbing the U.S. charts, with the single peaking at number two. "Time" reached number two in the U.S. shortly after the non-LP British single "Church of the Poison Mind," attained the same position in the U.K. "Ill Tumble 4 Ya" became a Top Ten hit in America that summer. By the time Culture Clubs second album Colour by Numbers was released in the fall of 1983, the band was the most popular pop/rock group in America and England. "Karma Chameleon" became a number one hit on both sides of the Atlantic, while the album reached number one in the U.K. and number two in the U.S. Throughout 1984, the group racked up hits, with "Its a Miracle" and "Miss Me Blind" reaching the Top Ten. In the fall, the group returned with its third album, Waking Up with the House on Fire. While "The War Song" reached number two in the U.K., the album was a disappointment in America, stalling at platinum; its predecessor went quadruple platinum. Following a brief tour in February, Culture Club went on hiatus for 1985, with Craig, Moss, and Hay pursuing extracurricular musical projects in the interim. During the year, Boy George -- who had previously denounced drugs in public -- became addicted to heroin. Furthermore, his romance with Moss, which had always been rocky, began to disintegrate. All of these problems were kept hidden, but it became evident that something was wrong when Culture Club returned to action in the spring of 1986. Though their comeback single, "Move Away," became a hit in April, its accompanying album From Luxury to Heartache stayed on the charts for only a few months. Rumors of Georges heroin addiction began to circulate, and by the summer, he announced that he was indeed addicted to the drug. In July, he was arrested by the British police for possession of cannabis. Several days later, keyboardist Michael Rudetski, who played on From Luxury to Heartache, was found dead of a heroin overdose in Georges home. Rudetskis parents unsuccessfully tried to press wrongful death charges on Boy George. While Boy George was battling heroin addiction, and his subsequent dependence on prescription narcotics, Culture Club broke up. George confirmed the groups disbandment in the spring of 1987, and he began a solo career later that year. While his solo career produced several dance hits in Europe, he didnt land an American hit until 1992, when his cover of Dave Berrys "The Crying Game" was featured in the Academy Award-nominated film of the same name. In 1995, George published his autobiography, Take It Like a Man. Culture Club reunited in 1998, issuing the two-disc set VH1 Storytellers/Greatest Hits. A new album, Dont Mind If I Do, appeared in 1999, reaching 64 on the U.K. charts; it did not receive an American release. Culture Club next celebrated their 20th Anniversary with a 2002 concert at Royal Albert Hall, then entered an unofficial hiatus. Jon Moss and Mikey Cragg attempted to tour with a new singer called Sam Butcher, but the project was scrapped before its launch. Culture Club reunited in 2014 for a tour and the band also began work on a new album with producer Youth. The group scheduled the release of an album called Tribes in 2015, but the record never materialized. Instead, the recordings provided the foundation for Life, the 2018 album that marked Culture Clubs first new album in nearly 20 years.

Greatest Hits : Allmusic album Review : There have been plenty of Culture Club collections over the years, but 2005s Greatest Hits is the first since 1993s At Worst...The Best of Boy George and Culture Club to be assembled with any thought or care. The rest have been cheap budget-line collections, but they did all serve up the big hits -- "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me," "Time (Clock of the Heart)," "Ill Tumble 4 Ya," "Church of the Poison Mind," "Karma Chameleon," "Miss Me Blind," "Its a Miracle" -- even if sometimes thats all they served up. Greatest Hits digs deeper (even if it doesnt include the Boy George solo hits on At Worst; it also doesnt have the Malcolm McLaren intro that mars the beginning of "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" on that disc), but the question for most listeners will be: do I need to dig deeper than the biggest hits? Most listeners will be happy with that aforementioned seven and find any disc that runs ten songs longer, as this does, to be kind of tiresome, even if it includes the gloriously silly "The War Song," which is the goofiest protest single ever. That said, those who do want a good 17-song cross-section of the bands entire career will be very happy with this, since it has all the singles in good sound -- even if its unlikely that most listeners will listen to this much past track eight or ten (the latter is "Black Money," one of the rare first-rate Culture Club album tracks).

Kissing to Be Clever : Allmusic album Review : Kissing to Be Clever is the album that put Culture Club on the musical map. Incorporating pop, rock, dance, new wave, soul, and Caribbean rhythms (an amalgamation of "cultures"), the result was a soulful, progressive pop outing that scored several landmark international hits and made a star out of the bands outrageous frontman, Boy George. A couple of tracks were European dance hits, but the first "official" single, "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me," was a simple masterpiece, resonating with an ache that harked back to the classic torch songs of yesteryear. Most of the other songs were quite different, with energetic beats and sometimes silly, campy themes ("Boy Boy Im the Boy," "White Boys Cant Control It," and "White Boy"). The album scored two other major hits, the zippy and bouncy "Ill Tumble 4 Ya" and the gorgeous "Time (Clock of the Heart)." However, beware that "Time" is only on certain pressings of the album. When the album was issued on CD, and once the Epic label dissolved, the formerly colorful album cover had turned to black and white, and "Time" had been omitted, which is pretty ridiculous, considering the song was a huge number two hit, and the album was then left with only nine tracks. Still, this set is a highlight of 1980s music, and set the stage for one of the decades most loved and oft-remembered bands.

Colour by Numbers : Allmusic album Review : Colour by Numbers was Culture Clubs most successful album, and, undoubtedly, one of the most popular albums from the 1980s. Scoring no less than four U.S. hit singles (and five overseas), this set dominated the charts for a full year, both in the United States and in Europe. The songs were infectious, the videos were all over MTV, and the band was a media magnet. Boy George sounded as warm and soulful as ever, but one of the real stars on this set was backing vocalist Helen Terry, who really brought the house down on the albums unforgettable first single, "Church of the Poison Mind." This album also featured the bands biggest (and only number one) hit, the irresistibly catchy "Karma Chameleon," its more rock & roll Top Five follow-up "Miss Me Blind," and the fourth single (and big club hit), "Its a Miracle" (which also featured Helen Terrys unmistakable belting). Also here are "Victims," a big, dark, deep, and bombastic power ballad that was a huge hit overseas but never released in the U.S., and other soulful favorites such as "Black Money" and "Thats the Way (Im Only Trying to Help You)," where Boy George truly flexed his vocal muscles. In the 1980s music was, in many cases, flamboyant, fun, sexy, soulful, colorful, androgynous, and carefree, and this album captured that spirit perfectly. A must for any collector of 1980s music, and the artistic and commercial pinnacle of a band that still attracted new fans years later.

Waking Up With the House on Fire : Allmusic album Review : The career of Boy George and Culture Club had been on a steady upward climb for two years by the fall of 1984, culminating, as it turned out, with the transatlantic number one success of "Karma Chameleon" and the Colour by Numbers album, which eventually sold four million copies in the U.S. alone. The group had every reason to expect that its third album, Waking Up with the House on Fire, would enjoy similar success, but it was not to be. The leadoff single, "The War Song," with its chorus, "War, war is stupid/And people are stupid/And love means nothing/In some strange quarters," put off many fans, and though it neared the top of the charts in the U.K., it was less successful in the U.S., while the differing follow-up singles, "The Medal Song" in Britain and "Mistake, No. 3" in America, barely made the Top 40. "The War Song" certainly was mistake number one as far as the U.S. was concerned, but the problem may have been less the music on Waking Up, which was typically frothy and propulsive, than the passing of a fad. When Culture Club arrived in the winter of 1982-1983, they were, in essence, a novelty act -- the joke was that they had such an "outrageous" image ("silly" would have been a better word) through the clothes and makeup of their lead singer, yet made such conventionally pretty pop music. But novelty has a limited shelf life, and by late 1984, Boy George, in his new flaming red hair and dollar-sign drop earrings on the album cover, had been sideswiped in the image department by Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna, who had upped the ante, especially in terms of sexiness, an area in which he simply couldnt compete, at least among heterosexuals. So, while its true that Waking Up didnt contain any song as catchy as "Karma Chameleon," the albums real failure was one of timing.

From Luxury to Heartache : Allmusic album Review : For their fourth album, From Luxury To Heartache, Culture Club jettisoned producer Steve Levine in favor of pop/R&B; veteran Arif Mardin, seeking to reverse the commercial decline they had suffered with their third album. When the danceable lead-off track, "Move Away," rose into the singles chart, that seemed like a good decision, and the rest of the album followed through with a pronounced drum sound and a relentless beat. The groups flamboyance was played down, from the relatively austere album cover to the music, in an attempt to redefine Culture Club as dance floor favorites. But previously the group had enjoyed a broad-based pop appeal, and by focusing on one part of their constituency, they ultimately sacrificed the rest. Whats more, to make this kind of music, you didnt need a group; all you needed was a lead singer and some synthesizers. No wonder Boy George went solo before the year was out.

The 12" Collection Plus : Allmusic album Review : While Culture Clubs 12-inch output was never of the same quality of other bands of their day (Soft Cell, early Spandau Ballet and, later in life, Frankie Goes To Hollywood spring to mind), still there is a dramatic fission to the best of them that reminds us, at the end of the day, just what a great dance act Culture Club could be. The best remixes tend to apply to the best songs - "War Song" is ghastly no matter how "ultimate" the six minute "disco mix" might be, while "Karma Chameleon" was so cloying that even the band couldnt bear to extend it beyond its familiar 45rpm lifespan. That said, it is not the only major Culture Club hit omitted from the collection - neither "Time" nor "Church Of The Poisoned Mind" were granted extensions, while "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" is present only as a dub version, no longer than the familiar a-side. Indeed, The 12" Collection Plus is more notable for rounding up the various non-album b-sides that graced the bands releases, than for any dramatic revelations in the extended mix department. But the US-only medley of "Its A Miracle"/"Miss You Blind" is a joy, while the late-in-the-day "God Thank You Woman" has a charm that belies its lowly chart placing. Theres also a welcome appearance for a seven minute semi-dub mix of Boy Georges solo "Everything I Own", while minimal duplication with the 2002 Culture Club box set ensures that The 12" Collection Plus will always find a place in the collectors heart.

VH1 Storytellers: Greatest Moments : Allmusic album Review : This two-CD set is a double dose of Culture Club greatest hits: one includes a reunion show the band did for the cable music network in 1998; the other gathers 13 of the quartets best studio tracks from 1982 to 1998 (the newly recorded "I Just Wanna Be Loved" is the first song Culture Club recorded together since their split in 1987). The Storytellers disc is a pretty lazy run-through of all the obvious tunes, with little spark generated on stage among the long-separated combo (and theres not much storytelling either). Greatest Moments, however, is a pretty thorough retrospective and glorious proof of what made Culture Club leaders of the British faux-soul invasion of the 80s. Most of the groups hits are here -- "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me," "Time (Clock of the Heart)," "Church of the Poison Mind," "Karma Chameleon," "Ill Tumble 4 Ya," "Miss Me Blind," etc. -- as are a couple of Boy George solo cuts ("The Crying Game" is the only one of interest). Skip the first half, soak in the second.

Don't Mind If I Do : Allmusic album Review : Culture Clubs first album in 13 years doesnt disappoint on any level, and proves why they were one of the biggest bands of the 1980s. In fact, its easily their most solid, mature, and focused album. They effortlessly blend together all the musical elements that made them a pop phenomenon, ranging from rock, soul, dance, and reggae to come up with a near perfect pop album. Boy Georges vocals are as smoky, torchy ,and seductive as ever, and the band sounds tight and completely in tune with one another. Light reggae influences abound on this set, from the first single "I Just Wanna Be Loved," to the catchy, radio-ready "Maybe Im a Fool" and the European hit "Your Kisses Are Charity" (which, on the single, featured vocals by Dolly Parton). The album also has its share of soulful, melancholy ballads, including the closer, "Less Than Perfect," which harks back to their Colour by Numbers Euro-hit "Victims," and the masterfully dark "Cold Shoulder," which ranks among the bands best. Then theres the retro-rock of "Sign Language," the irresistible, Latin-tinged dance song "Black Comedy," and their inspired take on the David Bowie classic "Starman." Not only is this a great album from start to finish, it is chock-full of songs which could be easily destined for hit single status. It is truly a mystery why this album was not released in the U.S., given the bands lasting popularity and Boy Georges continuous media presence. This set would have easily been a hit, especially during the late-90s/early-2000s craze for 80s music. A solid, satisfying album through and through.

Essential : Allmusic album Review : Connected to the New Romantic movement of the early 80s, but with a far more pop approach than some of their peers, Culture Club racked up platinum sales and Top Ten hits worldwide for a brief, brightly burning time. While the group quickly disintegrated from the inside out, smash hits like "Karma Chameleon" and "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" have become emblematic of 80s culture and nostalgia for the decade. Essentials lengthy 16 tracks include these and many of Culture Clubs other officially issued singles, which works both for and against its overall quality. While the inclusion of non-album hit and new wave classic "Time (Clock of the Heart)" is a highlight, all three half-baked singles from the groups waning third album, 1984s Waking Up with the House on Fire, break up the momentum of the collection. Remixes of failed early singles "Im Afraid of Me" and "White Boy" could have been left off as well. Even with the amount of inferior material, the strength of Culture Clubs ubiquitous smash hits as well as lesser singles like "Ill Tumble 4 Ya" makes Essential a more than adequate 80s dance party staple.
