Diana Ross
Allmusic Biography : Indisputably a legend, Diana Ross achieved stardom with the Supremes, a vocal group who during the 1960s grew from struggling hopefuls to Motown leaders to one of the most successful recording acts of all time. The singer broke from the group in 1970 and had immediate solo triumphs leading to more than two-dozen solo Top 40 pop hits. Among them are "Aint No Mountain High Enough" (1970), "Love Hangover" (1976), "Upside Down" (1980), and "Endless Love" (1981), chart-topping classics traversing pop-soul, disco, and adult contemporary ballads. No matter the style or emotion, Ross has exuded uncommon levels of glamour and poise, always sounding connected to her material while conveying a sense of perseverance through even the most distressed romantic scenarios within her rich discography. Nominated for a dozen Grammy awards through her work with and without the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-inducted Supremes, and nominated for an Academy Award via her starring role in Lady Sings the Blues, Ross has also been honored by the Recording Academy with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Her still-thriving, six-decade career was celebrated in 2019 with the documentary Diana Ross: Her Life, Love and Legacy.

A brief period in Bessemer, Alabama excepted, Diane Ernestine Earle Ross was brought up in Detroit, her place of birth. In 1959, shortly after she and her family had moved to the citys Brewster-Douglass Housing Projects, she joined Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson in the Primettes, who became the Supremes. From 1964 through 1969, the Motown group topped the Billboard Hot 100 a dozen times, beginning with "Where Did Our Love Go." They repeated that feat with the Grammy-nominated likes of "Baby Love" and "Stop in the Name of Love," continued with the immediate classic "Reflections" -- by which point they were billed as Diana Ross & the Supremes -- and concluded their run with "Someday Well Be Together." Along the way, the Supremes became one of the most commercially successful groups of all time.

Primed for a solo career, Ross performed with the Supremes for the last time in January 1970. That June, Motown released Diana Ross, the singers solo debut. Written and produced almost exclusively by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, it yielded hit singles with "Reach Out and Touch (Somebodys Hand)" and a remake of "Aint No Mountain High Enough," previously a smash for Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. The latter A-side topped Billboards Hot 100 and R&B; charts and earned Ross a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Contemporary Vocal Performance, Female. The three LPs Everything Is Everything, the soundtrack to the television special Diana!, and Surrender (all 1971-1972) quickly followed and were eclipsed by Lady Sings the Blues (1972), the chart-topping soundtrack to the Motown-produced film of the same name. Ross made her acting debut as Billie Holiday and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress.

Touch Me in the Morning, the Marvin Gaye duets LP Diana & Marvin, and Last Time I Saw Him (all 1973) soon followed. The biggest hit off these three was "Touch Me in the Morning" itself, written by Michael Masser and Ron Miller. Ross second solo number one, it too resulted in a Grammy best-performance nomination, this time in the pop field. Live at Caesars Palace (1974), Ross first solo concert recording, acted as a stop-gap before the romantic drama Mahogany, another big-screen Motown production with Ross as the lead actor. Composed by Masser and Gerry Goffin, the films "Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where Youre Going To)" returned Ross to the top of the pop charts and was Academy Award-nominated for Best Original Song.

Ross breathy vocals and natural theatricality proved to be perfectly suited for disco. She made another smooth transition with the Marilyn McLeod/Pamela Sawyer-written, Hal Davis-produced "Love Hangover." One of the styles exemplary epics, it went to the top of Billboards disco, R&B;, and pop charts, sending its parent release, Diana Ross (1976), to the Top Ten of the corresponding R&B; and pop album charts, and resulted in Ross fourth performance-related solo Grammy nomination. The singer responded with Baby, Its Me (1977), on which she was paired with Richard Perry, just before the producer helped revitalize the Pointer Sisters. Among the albums three charting A-sides was another song targeting dancefloors, "Your Love Is So Good for Me," which made Ross a best-performance Grammy nominee yet again. Next up was Ross (1978), evenly split between new recordings and sweetened versions of previously unreleased material recorded earlier in the decade.

Ross continued to alternate between careers with The Wiz (1978), a loose film adaptation of the like-titled Broadway musical production, itself a re-telling of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz placed within an African-American context. Another Motown production, it was a success outside standard industry box-office measures with an impact deepening across the years. Its soundtrack, certified gold, featured a version of "Ease on Down the Road" -- with Ross joined by co-star Michael Jackson, assisted by co-production from Quincy Jones -- that topped the disco chart and was nominated for a Grammy. Ross club appeal continued with a further set written and produced by Ashford & Simpson, The Boss (1979), and the following Chic Organization collaboration Diana (1980). The former became her first solo gold album in the U.S. The latter, powered by the number one pop hit "Upside Down" and number five follow-up "Im Coming Out," trumped it by going platinum, another solo first for the singer. "Upside Down" became her ninth Grammy-nominated recording. The same month the ceremony was broadcast, Motown issued a second patchwork LP of new and polished archival material, To Love Again (1981).

Ross left Motown for RCA, but not before recording "Endless Love," written by duet partner Lionel Richie for the film of the same title. A number one hit on the Hot 100, R&B;, and adult contemporary charts, it reappeared on Ross otherwise self-produced RCA debut, Why Do Fools Fall in Love (also 1981), and was nominated for two Grammy awards: Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and one of "the Big Four," Record of the Year. Like Diana, Why Do Fools Fall in Love went platinum. Ross continued to crank out albums for RCA on a nearly annual basis. Silk Electric (1982) was the source of "Muscles," a Top Ten pop, Grammy-nominated hit written and produced by Michael Jackson. She then worked with fellow Detroiter Ray Parker, Jr. and Gary Katz on another album titled Ross (1983), released the same year she gave two historic performances in New York Citys Central Park. Swept Away (1984) went gold on the strength of the Top 20 title song and number ten hit "Missing You," recorded respectively with the teams of Daryl Hall and Arthur Baker and Lionel Richie and James Anthony Carmichael. Her RCA phase trailed off with Eaten Alive (1985) and Red Hot Rhythm & Blues (1987), highlighted by "Eaten Alive," featuring supporting vocals from Michael Jackson and additional writing from Barry and Maurice Gibb.

In 1988, Ross and her Supremes partners Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Coincidentally, Ross signed a new deal with Motown and made her return to the label with Workin Overtime (1989), a new jack swing-flavored album produced by Chics Nile Rodgers. The title track was a Top Ten R&B; hit. The Force Behind the Power (1991) began a lengthy association with producer Peter Asher, but Ross also aimed toward the charts throughout the decade by working with other established studio veterans and emergent hitmakers, from Arif Mardin and Nick Martinelli to Al B. Sure! and Chuckii Booker. "No Matter What You Do," a duet with Sure!, became her final Top Ten R&B; hit.

Through the end of the 90s, Ross issued two more studio albums, Take Me Higher (1995) and Every Day Is a New Day (1999), but she spent the majority of the decade successfully positioning herself as a legacy artist. She celebrated the 20th anniversary of Lady Sings the Blues with a Ritz Theatre concert documented as Stolen Moments: The Lady Sings...Jazz and Blues. Less than three weeks after that performance, she recorded Christmas in Vienna with Plácido Domingo and José Carreras. Around the same time, she published the book Secrets of a Sparrow, synchronized with a career-spanning box set, Forever Diana: Musical Memoirs. The single-disc anthology One Woman: The Ultimate Collection summarized the box and was particularly successful in the U.K., topping the pop chart on its way to quadruple platinum certification.

The 2000s began with a Supremes tour for which Ross was joined by later members Lynda Laurence and Scherrie Payne, and continued with numerous high-profile solo performances and accolades. Most notably, Ross performed "God Bless America" at the 2001 U.S. Open womens singles final and two weeks later sang the same song at the first professional baseball game in New York -- at Shea Stadium -- following a break prompted by the September 11 terrorist attacks. Duets with Rod Stewart and Westlife were followed by Blue (2006), a standards-oriented project that had been shelved for three-and-a-half decades, intended as the follow-up to Lady Sings the Blues. Shortly thereafter came I Love You (also 2006), Ross first studio album in seven years. Produced by Peter Asher, the set consisted of covers of classic love songs, including Burt Bacharach and Hal Davids "The Look of Love," Harry Nilssons "Remember," and Heatwaves "Always and Forever." Ross contributions to the performing arts were subsequently acknowledged at the annual Kennedy Center Honors, and she earned a Lifetime Achievement Award from both the Recording Academy and BET. Over the course of the 2010s, Ross toured regularly and held multiple Las Vegas residencies. President Barack Obama awarded her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. Motown continued to issue catalog titles, including Diamond Diana: The Legacy Collection (2017). The documentary Diana Ross: Her Life, Love and Legacy closed out the decade.

Why Do Fools Fall in Love : Allmusic album Review : The irony of a 37-year-old woman having a huge hit covering an anthem for a bunch of teenagers aside, Diana Ross enjoyed tremendous success with this early 80s album. It was her second platinum album of the 1980s and eventually did better than any other full album she issued in the decade, except for Diana. It also started Ross on a run of youthful hits that would include "Work That Body," "Mirror, Mirror," and the ultimate vanity song, "Muscles."

Everything Is Everything : Allmusic album Review : Fresh from her career-defining role in the Supremes, Motown issued Diana Ross Everything Is Everything in 1970, within months of her self-titled solo debut of earlier the same year. This time, veteran Motown multitasker Deke Richards was brought in with hopes of equaling the unqualified success that the staff team of Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson had with Diana Ross -- particularly the songs "Reach Out and Touch (Somebodys Hand)" and "Aint No Mountain High Enough." Rather than drawing exclusively from their stable of in-house writers, Richards split the duties between himself and a variety of Hitsville U.S.A. stalwarts -- including Berry Gordy and Marvin Gaye -- as well as significant outside input from the likes of John Lennon-Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach-Hal David, and fellow Motor City soul stirrer Aretha Franklin. The upbeat opener, "My Place," swings steadily behind the frisky rhythm section -- replete with Jack Ashfords signature timekeeping on tambourine. Sprightly strings underscore Ross similarly agile and inviting lead vocals. In deference to the pink glamour shot adorning the front, Ross reveals an earthier image on the funky "Aint No Sad Song." It is a perfect example of producer Hal Davis ability to capture the essence of the singers sensuality, a feat he repeated to even greater effect a few years later on his production of the R&B;/pop crossover chart-topper "Love Hangover." The infectiously cheery "Everything Is Everything" has the slightly quirky feel of a Laura Nyro composition, although it was actually written by a female friend of Berry Gordy. The Marvin Gaye-Anna Gaye co-penned "Baby Its Love" is one of several outstanding deep cuts flawlessly blending the unmistakably vintage Motown sound with a comparatively modern arrangement. The Beatles remakes show contrasting sides to Ross talents: "Come Together" pulls no punches with an extended brassy and sassy reading, directly contrasted by the empathetic and heartfelt take of "The Long and Winding Road." Ross and Richards sultry collaboration on Aretha Franklins "I Love You (Call Me)" make for the finest contribution here from either participant. Although Everything Is Everything failed to exceed -- or even meet -- the chart achievements of its long-playing predecessor, many enthusiasts consider it to be a worthy companion.

Diana & Marvin : Allmusic album Review : By the early 70s, Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye were in completely different creative territories. Ross was settling down as a professional diva, while Gaye was pushing his art forward with Whats Going On, Trouble Man, and Lets Get It On. What they shared, apart from a mutual admiration, was that they were two of the biggest artists on Motown and that their voices sounded terrific together. So it wasnt entirely surprising that the duo teamed up in 1973 for the Diana & Marvin album. Although the album didnt produce any timeless classics, the results were still very good -- good enough for the record to be one of Ross best efforts of the era. The highlights are the three singles ("Youre a Special Part of Me," "My Mistake (Was to Love You)," "Dont Knock My Love"), but even the weaker tunes are redeemed by the duos indelible chemistry, and thats the reason why its worth a listen.

Touch Me in the Morning : Allmusic album Review : Arriving after Lady Sings the Blues, Touch Me in the Morning trades easily on Diana Ross’ status as a superstar. Grandiose and slick without being cloying, soft and seductive while retaining soul, the album veers away from R&B; toward adult contemporary, a sound fitting a cross-platform, cross-genre star such as Ross, and the telling thing about Touch Me in the Morning is that for as soft as its surfaces are, this isn’t quite a makeout record thanks in part to the trace DNA from its origins as a concept album Diana Ross conceived for her children. This record, fittingly called To the Baby, didn’t appear until Hip-O Select reissued Touch Me in the Morning as an expanded double-disc Expanded Edition in 2010, whereupon it was easy to see just how much the two albums shared: “Brown Baby” shows up as its own track, “My Baby (My Baby My Own),” while “Imagine” is part of the medley with “Save the Children.” Apart from such specifics, the overall tone is indeed similar, particularly in how the music is sentimental without being syrupy, pushing the idea of Diana as a diva who can do it all, but there is a reason why To the Baby was scrapped in favor of Touch Me in the Morning: it lacked a single as sweeping as “Touch Me in the Morning” itself, a signal that it was just slightly too inward-looking to sustain Ross’ monumental success. Sensing that, Berry Gordy once again displayed remarkable commercial instincts, rejiggering the project just enough to turn the LP into something rich, gorgeous, and romantic, something of a slow-dance classic, something that To the Baby, no matter how sincere and interesting it was, couldn’t quite be. [The rest of the expanded deluxe set includes several remixes and alternate takes, plus the OK unreleased Smokey Robinson-written “Kewpie Doll,” to round out the two discs.]

Greatest Hits : Allmusic album Review : Although all of these 20 songs were credited to The Supremes when they were released between 1963 and 1967, this album marked the first LP on which the group was billed as "Diana Ross and the Supremes." However you credit it, this out-of-print double-LP contains the bulk of the best of The Supremes, no less than 10 #1 hits from "Where Did Our Love Go" to "The Happening," and thus some of the most popular music of the 1960s. Ross and the Supremes, together and separately, continued to score afterwards, but this was their peak.

Last Time I Saw Him : Allmusic album Review : The early 1970s were a pivotal time for Diana Ross. In 1973 alone -- between touring and performing for SRO crowds in Vegas, she managed to record enough material for a number of different projects. Last Time I Saw Him (1973) was just one of several Ross releases that year as she worked on the still unissued To the Baby album, which was filled with songs for her daughters. She also released the hugely popular Touch Me in the Morning (1973), as well as contributed to Diana & Marvin (1973) -- an LPs worth of duets with Marvin Gaye. Last Time I Saw Him is particularly striking as the spotlight belongs on Ross remarkable versatility. Although arguably campy, the countrified title composition is larger-than-life thanks to Michael Omartian and Gene Pages arrangement. They throw in everything but the proverbial kitchen sink with a score that is all over the musical map from Dixieland band jazz to banjo-pickin and even an orchestrated string section. The lightweight poppy "No Ones Gonna Be a Fool Forever" is memorable as Ross adopts a Barbra Streisand approach, giving the song enough style as to level out the ersatz instrumentation that hopelessly places the tune squarely in the 70s. Conversely, the ballads "Love Me" and "Sleepin" are among the best that Ross has to offer. The latter is marked by a dramatic delivery, suggesting a subtext that would reveal more than the story lets on at face value. She likewise scores on the light and funky love song "When Will I Come Home to You" thanks to a jazzy melody and catchy chorus. "You" is another winner as the gospel-infused redemptive waltz is custom-made for Ross emotive reading. One minor caveat being that her spoken recitation comes off a tad too maudlin and actually sounds like an exchanging of vows. Similarly, her remake of the Malvina Reynolds/Harry Belafonte lullaby "Turn Around" -- which had initially been earmarked for the aforementioned To the Baby -- suffers from the same melodramatic dysfunction. Ross returns to form for the upbeat rocker "I Heard a Love Song (But You Never Made a Sound)" with roots reaching deep into a vintage Motown groove. "Stone Liberty" continues with an empowering R&B statement that might have been penned for the emergent womens liberation movement, but works equally as well as a personal declaration of freedom for all oppressed peoples. Wrapping things up is a cover of "Behind Closed Doors," which Ross turns into a soulful number giving the lyrics a bit of a lilt woefully absent from Charlie Richs hit version.

Diana Ross' Greatest Hits : Allmusic album Review : Not to be confused with Greatest Hits, which chronicled her post-Supremes solo hits, Diana Ross Greatest Hits contains the cream of her mid-70s hits, including "Touch Me in the Morning," "Love Hangover," "Last Time I Saw Him," "Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where Youre Going To)," "Aint No Mountain High Enough," "Reach Out and Touch" and "Good Morning Heartache." Although more comprehensive collections, such as Anthology, have been released, this remains a good sampler, especially for casual fans who only want hits from this era.

Baby It's Me : Allmusic album Review : A moderately successful late-70s album for Diana Ross. She was evolving into celebrity/stardom status, and her albums were increasingly filled with less soulful, more sophisticated, heavily produced and arranged ballads and light pop. She still sounded glorious on most of them, but now the edge, sensuality, and energy that had made her Motown songs classics was steadily eroding in favor of a more stylized, almost show-business kind of singing.

Diana : Allmusic album Review : Diana Ross would probably be offended by anyone who called her 1980 smash Diana a comeback, but lets face it -- after the flop of The Wiz, and the way that the disco revolution steamrollered so many of her Motown compatriots careers, thats exactly what it was. Wisely hooking up with Chics Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards (both the most traditionally rooted and most fearless of the major disco-era producers), Ross sounds more forceful than she had in years. The helium-toned style of her early hits with the Supremes is worlds away from the assertive way she rips into the funky hit "Upside Down." Even better, the joyous, celebratory "Im Coming Out" is probably the best solo track of her career, and the heartfelt "Now That Youre Gone" is one of her most subtle ballads. The glossy Chic production might sound a bit dated to some ears, but its matured much better than many similar albums of the era. Overall, this is, in many ways, Diana Ross best solo record.

All the Great Hits : Allmusic album Review : Diana Ross is certainly a diva of goddess-like proportions. Whether joined by the Supremes, or out on her own, her voice is unmistakable and powerful, plus she possesses the uncanny ability to take songs penned by others and make them very much her own -- to imbibe them with her very soul. This collection of Ross best-known and loved hits is perfect testament to her massive gift. Working closely with both singer/songwriting duo Ashford & Simpson, as well as producers Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards (both of Chic), Ross brought six songs to the top of the pop charts over a decade -- all included here. From the early classic gospel-inflected "Reach Out and Touch (Somebodys Hand)" and the empowering chest beater "Aint No Mountain High Enough," to the lite soul of "Its My House," Ross demonstrates full range. Also featured are the massive club hits "Upside Down" and "Im Coming Out," cut with Rodgers and Edwards. Strong and up-tempo, both songs became disco manifestos across the country in the early 80s and helped to keep the genre alive just a little bit longer. And, of course, this compilation is completed, naturally, with both the sultry throb of "Love Hangover" and the Lionel Richie duet "Endless Love." If there is a failing at all, it is within the "Medley (With the Supremes)." This glossy track hits the highlights, but really, why butcher such amazing songs? Any one would be better off slipping a Supremes greatest-hits onto the old turntable. But for the casual listener, this probably hits the spot. Its heavy on the chart-toppers, and a sweet sonic masterpiece by anyones standards.

Diana's Duets : Allmusic album Review : An excellent collection featuring Diana Ross singing with The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, the Supremes, and Marvin Gaye. These songs, all brilliantly produced and arranged, with wonderful lyrics, show how great a vocalist Ross was before she became weighted down with being a star and celebrity. Her delivery, vocal range, lyric interpretations, and performances are amazingly better than what she turned in during the late 70s and 80s. While her album with Marvin Gaye might be her best single duet work, this anthology will more than fill the bill.

Silk Electric : Allmusic album Review : Diana Ross continued her steady pace in the early 80s, scoring a hit single with the curious song "Muscles." She was now established as a stylist and show business celebrity, and seldom evoked the soulful or sensual air that characterized her past material. The songs were also more elaborately produced, the arrangements designed to accent the carefully calculated pauses, sighs, and coos, and the compositions more suggestive in their lyrics than convincing or compelling.

All the Great Love Songs : Allmusic album Review : A narrower anthology, this covers only the sentimental love tunes and ballads, omitting the uptempo dance and funk hits. She sounds uniformly great, but its only one side of the Ross story. Of course, those who didnt like hearing her doing disco, funk, and pop/dance will find this a bargain. Among the featured songs are "Youre All I Need to Get By," "Im Still Waiting," "My Man (Mon Homme)," "Touch Me in the Morning," "All of My Life," "Love Me," "Theme from Mahogany," "Sparkle" and "Endless Love."

Eaten Alive : Allmusic album Review : Diana Ross got a lot of mileage from this album, although it didnt duplicate the success shed enjoyed with Swept Away. The title track was a Top Ten R&B; hit, thanks in part to Michael Jacksons presence on background vocals, and another single also made the charts. Ross wasnt the powerhouse she was in the 1970s, but she was still doing well enough to keep making records.

Diana / The Boss : Allmusic album Review : Two of her biggest albums ever on a two-in-one package. Ross reportedly was miffed at the Rogers/Edwards team throughout the sessions for Diana, but it still was a hugely successful LP, scoring on the R&B; and pop charts and in the clubs. Likewise, The Boss was her second biggest hit album ever and her best from a sales perspective, going platinum and just missing topping the chart. This was the last great period for Diana Ross and may have been her undoing, because she ceased being a star through merit and became a celebrity instead.

Touch Me in the Morning / Baby It’s Me : Allmusic album Review : A good two-in-one CD covering two of Ross earliest and best solo albums on Motown. The songs have none of the pedantic or self-important posing that have littered her 1970s and 80s discs, and she still has the unusual mix of innocence, sexiness, and anguish that characterized both her best work with The Supremes and her finest Motown singles.

Ain't No Mountain High Enough : Allmusic album Review : Once "Aint No Mountain High Enough" became a hit single, its source album, Diana Ross, was reissued under a different title -- Aint No Mountain High Enough. Whatever its called, the album remains arguably her finest solo work at Motown and perhaps her best ever; it was certainly among her most stunning. Everyone who doubted whether Diana Ross could sustain a career outside the Supremes found out immediately that she would be a star. The single "Reach Out and Touch (Somebodys Hand)" remains a staple in her shows, and is still her finest message track.

Workin' Overtime : Allmusic album Review : Diana Ross made a bid for new stardom by returning to Motown with a deal giving her profit participation in the company and creative control in 1989. This album was the first product of that new contract, and the results werent very encouraging. There were no moderate or even small hits, and the album quickly dropped off both the R&B; and pop charts within a couple of weeks of its release. Ross sounded completely lost, and the production, arrangements, and compositions sounded weak and thin next to the dominant New Jack and hip-hop works.

The Force Behind the Power : Allmusic album Review : On her first album of the 90s, Diana Ross attempted to keep up with the times, adding light New Jack beats and synthesized urban contemporary arrangements. It may have been a good idea in theory, but The Force Behind the Power fails in practice. Most of the music sounds too carefully considered, and Ross never quite sounds comfortable with the new sonic surface. Another problem is the material -- most of it is simply not memorable. And when there is a good song, like Nick Lowes "Battlefield," its destroyed in the arrangements. There are a couple of moments where it seems like its going to all come together, but for the most part, The Force Behind the Power is a bungled attempt at contemporizing Miss Ross. And its questionable whether such an effort was necessary in the first place. [The U.K. edition of The Force Behind the Power has an additional song, "No Matter What You Do," which is a duet with Al B. Sure!.]

A Very Special Season : Allmusic album Review : Diana Ross 1994 Christmas album, A Very Special Season, easily ranks among the divas best of the 90s. Instead of opting for hip arrangements aimed at pleasing a younger, jaded audience, all the songs on this set are classically arranged with lush orchestrations, resulting in a truly timeless holiday album, not unlike what one would have expected from the crooners and sirens of yesteryear. The songs are all lovingly produced, and Ross effectively wraps her silken pipes around each tune with utmost sincerity. The album consists mostly of Christmas standards, including "White Christmas," "The Christmas Song," "O Holy Night," "Ave Maria," and "Silent Night," as well as covers of Paul McCartneys "Wonderful Chirstmastime" and John Lennons "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)." Also included are inspirational songs that are traditionally not thought of as holiday tunes but fit perfectly, such as the Burt Bacharach/Hal David composition "What the World Needs Now" and a cover of Stevie Wonders "Overjoyed," as well as "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" and "Amazing Grace." For fans of timeless, old-fashioned Christmas music, as well as fans of Diana Ross, this lovely holiday album, available only as a European import, is an absolute must, and a reminder of just how beautiful, when done well, holiday music can be.

Take Me Higher : Allmusic album Review : Take Me Higher, Diana Rosss 19th new studio album since launching her solo career in 1970 and her first in four years, was, like her last two (Workin Overtime and The Force Behind the Power), a commercial disaster, barely making the charts. Combining tbe work of four separate producers who mostly tried to fit Ross into contemporary dance trends, the album did feature a club bit in the title song, while the ballad "Gone" made the Top 40 in the U.K. But Ross herself seemed to have spent more time posing for the many fashion shots in the booklet than singing tbe pedestrian songs.

Every Day Is a New Day : Allmusic album Review : Diana Ross remained a larger-than-life figure throughout the 90s, but she hadnt had a major hit since 1986. Every Day Is a New Day was designed to change that. Released in 1999, the record was her most carefully conceived album in years, filled with immaculate productions that appealed either to the dancefloor or adult contemporary radio. The problem is, there wasnt much to recommend in the way of songs. Although the album sounds good, nothing on it truly catches hold the way even such latter-day hits as "Missing You," "Swept Away" and "Muscles" did. As a result, Every Day Is a New Day stands as nothing more than a stylish but failed comeback.

Blue : Allmusic album Review : For soul fanatics, the Motown archives are the musical equivalent to the Wonka building in Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. Every twist and turn is filled with the possibility of resuscitation, preservation, and in some instances surprise discoveries. Such is the case with Blue, which was supposed to be the follow-up album to Diana Ross wildly successful Lady Sings the Blues, but was shelved when Motown maestro Berry Gordy took Ross back in a more pop direction with Touch Me in the Morning. This direction, while proving successful at the time, is unfortunate, as the performances on Blue rival (and in some instances best) the performances on Lady Sings the Blues. A few of these tracks would later see the day on other albums ("Little Girl Blue" on Touch Me in the Morning and "Smile" on Diana Ross in 1976) but with alternate vocal takes and mixes. But Ross portrayal of Billie Holiday was effective; it wasnt just a carbon copy reenactment of Holiday, but a cultivation of her essence when placed on-stage or in the studio behind a microphone. Gil Askeys arrangements are top-notch without sounding like dinner theater knock-offs. Blue is an album every bit as bold an artistic statement as her contemporaries Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, who were recording the opuses Where Im Coming From and Whats Going On around the same time, and for Ross fans, Blue is every bit as enjoyable as her sultriest moments as the supreme Supreme.

I Love You : Allmusic album Review : In what might be the least inspired album of her career, iconic diva Diana Ross sleepwalks through a mishmash of seemingly randomly chosen love songs, all covers save for one new composition, adding nothing to them and forcing one to wonder just why she bothered. Its been standard music industry practice for years for artists to record (or for their labels to release compilations of) romantic tunes in time for Valentines Day, and the January 2007 arrival of this set couldnt have been better timed as it also coincided with the release of the film version of Dreamgirls, based on the career of the Supremes. But Ross doesnt seize the moment: she puts little emotion or enthusiasm into her recitations here, and seems to have little familiarity with, or understanding of, the songs she and producers Peter Asher and Steve Tyrell have chosen for the album. Her vocals are largely nondescript and at times barely hint at the qualities that made her such a distinctive force for decades, and the arrangements and production are whitewashed and lacking in originality. The material is all over the place, including songs from the 50s to those of more recent vintage, from the Platters "Only You" through Berlins "Take My Breath Away," and from fellow Motown great Marvin Gayes "I Want You" to the ubiquitous (and, at this point, plain annoying) "You Are So Beautiful." Ross takes Jackie Wilsons "To Be Loved" and bleeds the soul from it, and she drains the magic from the Drifters classic "This Magic Moment." Harry Nilssons "Remember" not only opens the album but closes it in a brief reprise version, but Ross seems unsure what to do with it either time. The Beatles "I Will" might be an excellent cover choice in more sympathetic hands, but Ross sounds uncomfortable with its simplicity and quietness, while her reading of Burt Bacharach-Hal Davids sultry masterpiece "The Look of Love" is embarrassingly lifeless, especially if compared with Dusty Springfields definitive 60s version. Whoever came up with the idea of Ross covering the Spiral Starecases 1969 hit "More Today Than Yesterday" at least gets a few points for digging a bit deeper into the covers well, but Ross puts no fire into the up-tempo/upbeat song. Interestingly, the one new track here (other than a piece from the current Broadway production of The Color Purple), the Fred White-penned ballad "I Love You (Thats All That Really Matters)," makes the most of Ross vocal capabilities and range, begging the question of why she didnt just record an album of new material custom-fitted to her talents. Had the singer on this album been an unknown trying out for American Idol with these performances, no doubt Simon Cowell would have found her appalling. This has to be chalked up as an anomaly and a mistake, because an artist as singular as Diana Ross doesnt just forget who she is and what she does best.

Red Hot Rhythm & Blues : Allmusic album Review : Diana Ross made one of her better albums in quite a while, although this late-80s number didnt fare as well as anticipated. But "Its Hard For Me to Say," aco-produced and co-written with Luther Vandross, was the first heartache tune Ross had done in many years with a real, poignant edge to it, while "Cross My Heart" was a decent commercial number. Of course, the tune that ended up making the most noise was "Dirty Looks," another of Ross patented cute, quasi-sophisticated numbers.
