Allmusic Biography : Don McLean released his debut album, Tapestry, at the dawn of the 1970s when the hangover haze of the 1960s still lingered strongly in the air. McLean specialized in that netherworld between 60s coffeehouse folk and 70s introspection, navigating the distance between confessional singer/songwriter and MOR pop. Hed never abandon this aesthetic, crafting a handsome, modest body of work over the course of nearly five decades, but hed always be known for "American Pie," his fluke 1971 chart-topper. A long, winding elegy for rock & roll, "American Pie" spent four weeks on the Billboard charts but that smash success was eclipsed by its enduring afterlife in the culture, where it served as the fodder for nostalgia and parodies for decades, eventually earning entry into the National Recording Registry in 2017. So strong was the allure of "American Pie" that it suggested McLean only had one charting hit, which isnt true: its follow-up, "Vincent," peaked at 12, and throughout the 70s he was a mainstay on Billboards adult contemporary charts, culminating in his final crossover hit in the form of a 1980 cover of Roy Orbisons "Crying." McLean faded from the charts not long after that, but hed keep touring and recording all the way into the 2010s, relying as much on affection for his entire catalog as he did on "American Pie." Born and raised in New Rochelle, New York, Don McLean fell in love with folk as a teenager, thanks in part to the Weavers seminal At Carnegie Hall album. Following his 1963 graduation from Iona Preparatory School, he spent a few months at Villanova University before becoming a part-time student so he could devote himself to folk music. He became a regular at the Gaslight Café and the Bitter End, making his way out to the Troubadour in Los Angeles, playing gigs wherever they arose. In 1968, he earned a grant from the New York State Council of the Arts and, not long afterward, his connection with Weavers leader Pete Seeger deepened as McLean supported Seeger on his 1969 Clearwater boat trip on the Hudson. McLean recorded his debut, Tapestry, on his own dime in 1969, eventually landing the album on MediaArts. "Castles in the Air," the records first single, made it to 40 on Billboards easy listening charts; it also contained "And I Love You So," which would become a number one easy listening hit for Perry Como in 1973. By that point, United Artists acquired MediaArts and UA put out American Pie, McLeans second album, in 1971. Its title track was pulled as the first single, and by January 1972 it reached the top of Billboards Hot 100. "Vincent," a delicate ode to Vincent Van Gogh, reached number 12 later in 1972. Don McLeans self-titled third album followed in 1973 but it didnt replicate the success of American Pie; its first single, "Dreidel," peaked at seven on the easy listening chart and 21 on the Top 40, with "If We Try" reaching 12 on the easy listening chart. The 1973 covers album Playin Favorites emphasized McLeans folk roots, which is the reason it didnt generate any pop hits, but it nevertheless stalled his career. The Joel Dorn-produced 1974 LP Homeless Brother couldnt go beyond 120 on Billboards Top 200, while the live 1976 set Solo failed to chart. McLean moved to Arista Records, releasing Prime Time in 1977; it also didnt chart. Chain Lightning, its successor, didnt see American release upon its 1978 arrival, but after his cover of Roy Orbisons "Crying" reached number one in the U.K. in 1980, the album appeared in the U.S. "Crying" proved to be a big hit in the U.S. too, reaching number five. The albums 1981 sequel, Believers, generated an easy listening hit in a new version of his first single, "Castles in the Air," thereby providing a nice bookend to his career as a pop hitmaker. McLean didnt record during the mid-80s, but he resurfaced in 1987, first with Greatest Hits Then & Now and then the Capitol studio album Love Tracks, which targeted a country audience; "You Cant Blame the Train" went to 49 on Billboards country charts. In 1989 he recorded the covers album For the Memories, then signed to Curb in 1991; that year, he released the seasonal set Christmas and the studio album Headroom. He left the label after 1995s The River of Love, which was his first collection of original songs in eight years. Hip-O put out Christmas Dreams, his second holiday album, in 1997. He moved to Madacy in 2001, with the label releasing the tribute Sings Marty Robbins and the live album Starry Starry Night that year. McLean released two independent albums in 2003 -- Youve Got to Share: Songs for Children and The Western Album -- with a third seasonal album, Christmastime!, appearing in 2004. Hyena released Rearview Mirror: An American Musical Journey in 2005, with 2009 bringing Addicted to Black, his first collection of original songs since 1995. A largely live set called Don McLean: American Troubadour arrived in 2012, followed by Live in Manchester, the 2014 archival release of a 1991 gig. McLean returned in 2018 with Botanical Gardens, an album of originals recorded at Nashvilles Watershed Studios.

Tapestry : Allmusic album Review : It took the success of Don McLeans second album, American Pie, to stimulate interest in his debut record, Tapestry. But once the new fans looked, they found that the album contained the same high level of pop-folk songwriting, if in a somewhat less epic form. "Castles in the Air" became a hit, and the album also contained McLeans version of his song "And I Love You So," which Perry Como successfully covered in 1973.

American Pie : Allmusic album Review : Don McLeans second album, American Pie, which was his first to gain recognition after the negligible initial sales of 1970s Tapestry, is necessarily dominated by its title track, a lengthy, allegorical history of rock & roll, because it became an unlikely hit, topping the singles chart and putting the LP at number one as well. "American Pie" has remained as much a cultural touchstone as a song, sung by everyone from Garth Brooks to Madonna, its title borrowed for a pair of smutty teen comedies, while the record itself has earned a registered three-million plays on U.S. radio stations. There may not be much more to note about it, then, except perhaps that even without a crib sheet to identify whos who, the song can still be enjoyed for its engaging melody and singable chorus, which may have more to do with its success than anything else. Of course, the album also included "Vincent," McLeans paean to Van Gogh, which has been played two-million times. Nothing else on the album is as effective as the hits, but the other eight original songs range from sensitive fare like "Till Tomorrow" to the sarcastic, uptempo "Everybody Loves Me, Baby." American Pie -- the album -- is very much a record of its time; it is imbued with the vague depression of the early 70s that infected the population and found expression in the works of singer/songwriters. "American Pie" -- the song -- is really a criticism of what happened in popular music in the 60s, and "Vincent" sympathizes with Van Goghs suicide as a sane comment on an insane world. "Crossroads" and "Empty Chairs" are personal reflections full of regret and despondency, with the love song "Winterwood" providing the only respite. In the albums second half, the songs get more portentous, tracing societys ills into war and spiritual troubles in "The Grave" and "Sister Fatima." The songs are made all the more poignant by the stately folk-pop arrangements and McLeans clear, direct tenor. It was that voice, equally effective on remakes of pop oldies, that was his salvation when he proved unable to match the songwriting standard set on Tapestry and this collection. But then, the album has an overall elegiac quality that makes it sound like a final statement. After all, if the music has died, what else is there to say?

Don McLean : Allmusic album Review : When Don McLean was recording his second album, American Pie, in 1971, he was a little-known singer/songwriter whose first album, Tapestry, had had little commercial impact. Only a year later, when he came to make his third LP, Don McLean, he was attempting to follow up a chart-topping album that had spawned two chart-topping hits, "American Pie" and "Vincent" (the latter going to number one in the U.K. and the Top 20 in the U.S.). Yet he remained the same artist he had been before the epic "American Pie" created a sensation with its long allegorical verses and catchy chorus. His worldview continued to reflect a 60s hangover, in which disappointment and failure had replaced hope and struggle. That view had been expressed in "American Pie" and "Vincent," as well as on the rest of American Pie and Tapestry, and it continued on Don McLean, which began with the rocker "Dreidel," a harsh description of life that included lines such as "No trust in tomorrow, its a lie" and "Im watchin the future its black." This was followed by the country-styled "Bronco Bills Lament," sung in the voice of a Hollywood cowboy who considers his career a sham, another metaphor of loss and betrayal. And so it went. McLean did lighten the gloom with humor by covering the 1920s novelty song "On the Amazon" from the British musical Mr. Cinders, its nonsense lyrics employing multisyllabic words as if they were the names of animals ("On the Amazon the prophylactics prowl/On the Amazon the hypodermics howl"). And he offered hope in his love songs, notably "If We Try." That lovely ballad was released as the second single and became a minor chart entry. Had "If We Try" been the first single instead of "Dreidel" (which just missed the Top 20), the album might have been much more successful. (Beyond the songs odd musical structure and pessimistic lyrics, most people didnt know what a dreidel was. Its a Jewish childrens toy.) As it was, Don McLean was rated an artistic and commercial disappointment as a follow-up to American Pie.

Homeless Brother : Allmusic album Review : After taking an album off as a songwriter with the all-covers collection Playin Favourites in 1973, Don McLean returned to providing most of the compositions on his fifth LP Homeless Brother in 1974. It was an ambitious work, which he signaled by a sleeve note on the back cover in which he described "the vision of this album...growing within...." That vision, or concept, seemed to be embodied in the title and corresponding album cover, a painting of a hobo inside a boxcar. And, indeed, in song after song, notably the title track, which found McLean being accompanied by his mentor, Pete Seeger, on background vocals, there were references to hoboes and hoboing. (The record was dedicated to Lee Hays, Seegers partner in the Weavers.) But there was also an entirely different concept at work on Homeless Brother, one that to some extent contradicted the hobo theme. That concept was also suggested in the original packaging, which was a glossy gatefold LP cover, the actual album sleeve containing both the lyrics and lengthy lists of high-priced studio musicians including horn and string sections working at the behest of producer Joel Dorn. All this suggested a major recording effort and a big release with the big sales such a release was intended to garner. And, indeed, many of the tracks were creamy pop productions that seemed to have little in common with the hobo theme. Certainly, much of the music would have confused a buyer who picked up the album based on the title and cover painting and expected a modern version of a topical folk album. On the other hand, the audience that might have been interested in the smooth soft-rock pop music inside probably would have been put off by the title and cover. That may help explain the albums curious commercial fate. United Artists Records released the attractive love song "La La Love You" as a single, but failed to break it, and the LP foundered on the charts. Then, months later, a second single, the infectious 1930s-styled "Wonderful Baby" (a song written for Fred Astaire, who recorded it, with some deceptively childlike lyrics that turned out to be somewhat caustic upon close examination) was put out on 45 and proceeded to top the Billboard easy listening chart, much too late to do any good to the album on which it originated.

Prime Time : Allmusic album Review : McLean went in a dozen directions on this 1977 release. There are wild tunes like "Jump" (with great piano playing by Howie Wyeth), solemn ones like "The Statue," which is a solo vocal and string quartet (15 years before Elvis Costellos The Juliet Letters), and back-to-the-roots banjo playing on "Redwing." McLean has always believed in the power of melody and worked against the stereotype he was saddled with because of "American Pie." His albums are generally not commanding, but they demonstrate a loving breadth of material and his committed enthusiasm. The CD reissue adds one bonus track, "If You Can Dream."

Chain Lightning : Allmusic album Review : These 12 tracks were cut in 1978 and finally released three years later, scoring a Top 30 listing on the album charts and two hit singles, covers of Roy Orbisons "Crying" and the Skyliners "Since I Dont Have You." Utilizing top Nashville pickers all the way through and Elvis backup group, the Jordanaires, on several tracks, Don McLeans versions of Buddy Hollys "It Doesnt Matter Anymore," Gene Vincents "Lotta Lovin," Hank Williams "Your Cheatin Heart," and Gordon Lightfoots "If You Could Read My Mind" (included here as a bonus track) show that hes a fine interpreter of other writers material as well. McLeans originals on this album include "Words and Music," "Its Just the Sun," "Its a Beautiful Life," "Genesis (In the Beginning)," "Wonderful Night" and the title track, all of which blend quite well with the chosen covers. If "American Pie" is mostly all youve ever heard by this artist, heres another side of the coin well worth investigating.

Believers : Allmusic album Review : Who would have expected that Believers -- part of the second phase of Don McLeans career -- would not only be one of his strongest albums of his whole career, but a solidly competitive singer/songwriter effort, even as late as 1981? Or that it holds up on CD in the 21st century? It would be easy to say that Believers is worth picking up just for McLeans re-recording of "Castles in the Air" -- ten years after he first wrote and recorded it, McLean gave the song more warmth and feeling than the earlier rendition and, in doing so, proved just how special the song was to him. But the remainder of the album is every bit as strong, if not as familiar as "Castles in the Air" (which became a worldwide hit in this version): the slightly bluesy "Isnt It Strange," an irony-laced lament about love that is wryly clever in its bittersweet exploration of mens and womens foibles; "Left for Dead on the Road of Love," a punchy roots rock-style number that recalls John Fogerty; and the very bluesy "Believers," with what sounds like a National Steel guitar, mixing 30s and 80s sounds in a very neat, tight, and catchy package, which pretty well sums up this album. Believers did fairly well at the time of its release, owing to the presence of "Castles in the Air," and the Hip-O Records CD reissue is about as essential listening as any of his best United Artists albums.

Headroom : Allmusic album Review : Don McLean released several albums between 1981 and 1991, but all of them could be considered side projects, including a live record (Dominion), a compilation containing some new tracks (Greatest Hits Then & Now), a couple of collections of covers (For the Memories and For the Memories, Vols. 1 & 2), a country LP (Love Tracks), and a holiday release (Christmas). What he did not do for ten years was make an album like the ones he was known for, consisting entirely or mostly of his own original material. Headroom, with ten new McLean compositions, was his first such recording since 1981s Believers. On it, this 45-year-old 60s liberal looked at America a decade into the Reagan/Bush years and did not like what he saw. His criticism began with the lead-off title song, which featured topical lyrics touching on such contemporary matters as the Savings & Loan scandal, set to a rock & roll arrangement. The second song, "Fashion Victim," had a synthesized dance/pop sound, all the better to support a lyric attacking media trends in the social and political realms. "How did the land of Jefferson, how did the land of King/Become the land of hamburgers and raisins that can sing?," McLean asked. "Roosevelt was crippled, Lincoln was a geek/Theyd never get elected, their clothes were never chic." The musical track might have sounded like something on MTV, but it wasnt likely to turn up there, and that was the idea. Next came the ballad "1967," in which a man recalled his friend who went to Vietnam with him and never came back. After this trio of socially conscious and bitter songs, the album turned somewhat more philosophical and occasionally romantic, including the love songs "One in a Row" and "Siamese Twins (Joined at the Heart)," but Headroom remained, on the whole, a collection of bitingly critical songs on which McLean, with his usual eloquence, set out his indictment of the state of things, circa 1991.

Love Tracks : Allmusic album Review : Overly slick and dated 80s Nashville production mars this comeback effort by Don McLean. McLean only contributes a handful of original songs -- the rest are fairly standard Nashville filler, although he pulls off the everyman stomper "Love in My Heart" convincingly, and "Cant Blame the Train" rollicks along with some verve. Both tracks made the Top 100 country chart. The obvious intent here was to pitch McLean at the mainstream country market, and while he had the vocal talent to do it and does a credible enough job, McLeans real strength was always his sensitive songwriting, and that unfortunately is in short supply. There are glimpses of vintage McLean in the ballad to a child "What Will the World Be Like" and the lyrically sharp breakup ballad "Its Not Your Fault." On the whole though, McLean seems constrained by Capitols bid to dress him in a Nashville straitjacket, and the album quickly faded into obscurity. Completists will want to track it down, but it is currently out of print.

American Pie & Other Hits : Allmusic album Review : American Pie & Other Hits is a solid, ten-track sampler of Don McLeans career, containing his pair of big hits ("American Pie," "Vincent"), plus the minor hits "Dreidel," "If We Try," and "Castles in the Air." McLean had a few other hits, including a Top Ten cover of Roy Orbisons "Crying," plus some worthwhile album tracks, but for casual fans who just want the hits, this will do nicely.

For the Memories : Allmusic album Review : In his liner notes, McLean claims he is "primarily a singer who occasionally writes songs," as opposed to, one presumes, a fully hyphenated singer-songwriter. That was the motivation for this collection, which consists entirely of his interpretations of love songs from the 30s, 40s, and 50s, given the full adult contemporary treatment, with some background vocals from the Jordanaires. Not only does McLean manage to effectively neuter the classic versions of hits identified with Sam Cooke, Hank Williams, Buddy Holly, Elvis, Ricky Nelson, and Patsy Cline, he also has a go at Gershwin, Berlin, and Hoagy Carmichael. If youre into Don McLean, its largely to hear folk-flavored soft rock with a fair amount of original material, not a forgettable exercise such as this. Available for only a brief time after its 1989 release as For the Memories Vol. 1 & 2 (the label, Gold Castle, folded weeks later), it was reissued on CD as just For the Memories in 1997, with a previously unreleased bonus track medley of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/Brother Can You Spare a Dime."

Favorites : Allmusic album Review : This budget-priced ten-song compilation, one of many in the Don McLean discography, includes the six chart singles McLean scored between late 1971 and early 1981, notably the mega-hit "American Pie," the broadly popular "Vincent," and the hit cover of Roy Orbisons "Crying." Filling out the collection are four tracks from the Tapestry and American Pie LPs, among them McLeans version of his song "And I Love You So," which was not a hit for McLean himself, but was covered by many artists, among them Perry Como, for whom it was a hit. To be comprehensive, the album would have to have included such key tracks as "Castles in the Air" and "Since I Dont Have You," but they are missing. Still, the album does contain the major hits from McLeans popular heyday.

The Collection : Allmusic album Review : British reissue label Music Clubs 18-song, 79-minute Don McLean compilation The Collection contains none of the original recordings from the singer/songwriters popular heyday on United Artists Records from 1971 to 1976. Instead, it focuses on the second phase of his recording career, starting with 1977s Prime Time, originally released by Arista Records, and continuing through Chain Lightning, Believers, and the live album Dominion. Hence, it does not contain the hit versions of "American Pie" or "Vincent," but it does conclude with concert renditions of those songs. McLean still had some commercial clout in the second half of the ‘70s and the early ‘80s, and the hit versions of "Crying," "Since I Dont Have You," and "Castles in the Air" are included. So are the bonus tracks that were featured on the 1997 reissues of Prime Time, Chain Lightning, and Believers, McLeans original "If You Can Dream" and his covers of Gordon Lightfoots "If You Could Read My Mind" and Bobby Darins "Dream Lover." There are also selections from the all-covers disc For the Memories. As such, the album constitutes a combination of McLeans work as a songwriter and as an interpretive singer. But it is a collection drawn only from a slice of his recorded output, and not the most popular slice at that.

Starry, Starry Night : Allmusic album Review : Don McLeans third official live album, Starry Starry Night, isnt precisely the soundtrack to the video of his PBS special, from a November 2, 1999, performance at Austin, TXs Paramount Theater, so much as another permutation of the show. Nanci Griffiths contribution is present, but Garth Brookss songs arent (as he explains in the notes, there are two different video editions that dont overlap 100 percent with each other or this release). Backed by a quartet (including drummer), and with a synthesizer replacing the string arrangements used in the original broadcast, as a result of an unspecified technical problem, this performance doesnt sound like either of McLeans two earlier live albums. As this was a Texas concert, it made doubly good sense to open with Buddy Hollys "Every Day" (and include Hollys "Raining in My Heart"), and he also provides a pair of songs from his then recent Marty Robbins album, plus Roy Orbisons "Crying." The rest is all McLeans material, and its interesting to realize, beyond "American Pie," "Vincent," and "And I Love You So," just how many of his songs have penetrated the consciousness, more subtly but just as surely as those others -- "Castles in the Air," "Winterwood," and "If We Try" have all achieved some familiarity. Some of the material, such as "Tulsa Time/Deep in the Heart of Texas," works better with the full band than, say, "Castles in the Air," which didnt need the drummer, however restrained the latter tries to be. McLean seems a little less relaxed overall as a performer than he was on his other live releases, and Griffiths harmonies are welcome on "And I Love You So," which is delightfully extended, and on "Raining in My Heart." Other songs come to life in fresh and unique ways here, such as "Jerusalem," for which the band moves to the fore, playing full out and, coupled with McLeans robust singing, creating a truly majestic sound. As for "American Pie," its done with fairly heavy synthesizer accompaniment, and between the latter and the two guitars and bass, this can safely be called the "big band" version (perhaps almost the "folk-rock" version?) of the song. The best moment in the performance comes immediately after that song, when McLean sings "Supermans Ghost," which refers to the actor George Reeves and the dangers of typecasting and career dead-ends -- his performance here is so good that even if the rest of the show werent any good (and it is very good) the double-disc set would be worth owning just for this track. And the best is saved for last with a particularly poignant rendition of "Vincent."

Legendary Songs of Don McLean : Allmusic album Review : Legendary Songs of Don McLean is basically EMIs repackaging of the 1991 Best of Don McLean with double the tracks. It is a welcome expansion to the collection and serves as a better-defined cross section of McLeans abilities. His beautiful reading of the Hank Williams classic "Your Cheatin Heart" and the sweet lullaby "Wonderful Baby" sit alongside the flagship "American Pie" and other classics like "Vincent" and "Castles in the Air," quite nicely showcasing what a versatile musician Don McLean really is. The only point where this collection really drags is with a pair of tunes recorded in the early 90s, "Headroom" and "Have You Seen Me," where the production is over the top and too showy to let the songs actually shine. Luckily, these two songs come near the end of the collection, but make the closing cuts -- the unreleased "Just to Hold My Hand" and "Empty Chairs" -- feel lost at sea. Putting these two tracks on the collection was a poor decision on the part of the compilation producers, but the rest of the contents more than make up for this blunder by positioning the lesser-known gems next to the classics in McLeans illustrious career.
