Eliza Carthy | ||
Allmusic Biography : Hailed as an innovator and a leading light of Englands folk scene, Eliza Carthy rose to prominence in the mid-90s both as a solo artist and a member of Waterson-Carthy, the folk group she formed with her parents, folk icons Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy. A singer, songwriter, and fiddler, Carthy built her reputation early on, infusing the traditional folk of her parents generation with a youthful vibrancy and punk-like spirit on Mercury Prize-nominated albums like 1998s Red Rice and 2003s Anglicana. Through numerous collaborations with her family and artists like Billy Bragg, Richard Thompson, the Oysterband, Nancy Kerr, Martin Green, and a host of others, her presence has been woven into the fabric of U.K. folk music in the 21st century. Born August 23, 1975 in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, Carthys first formal entry into the family business came at the age of 13 when she formed the Waterdaughters with her aunt, Lal Waterson, and cousin Marry Waterson. Meanwhile, her prowess as a young fiddler led to a variety of gigs both with her family and as one-half of a fiddle duo with musical partner Nancy Kerr, yielding the 1993 album Eliza Carthy & Nancy Kerr. The following year saw the formation of Waterson-Carthy, a group that joined Eliza with her parents, bridging the gap between two generations of folk music. Between Waterson-Carthys 1994 debut, a second outing with Kerr in 1995s Shape of Scrape, and her own 1996 solo debut, Heat Light & Sound, Carthys arrival as a major player in the British folk scene was undeniable. Throughout the remainder of the 90s, she was highly active, recording and performing as part of Waterson-Carthy, leading another band, the Kings of Calicut, appearing on Billy Bragg and Wilcos Mermaid Avenue project, and releasing her acclaimed 1998 solo follow-up, Red Rice, which was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. Following 2000s eclectic Angels & Cigarettes album, she appeared on yet another family project, the supergroup Blue Murder, which also features members of Swan Arcade and Coope, Boyes & Simpson. Her fourth LP, 2003s Anglicana, earned another Mercury Prize nomination as well as three Radio 2 Folk Awards. 2004s Rough Music saw a marked return to traditional music, as did the Waterson-Carthy releases Fine Fishes & Yellow Sand (2004) and Holy Heathens and the Old Green Man (2006), the latter of which was highly focused on instrumental pieces. Taking part in producer Hal Willners 2006 nautical collection, Rogues Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys, she contributed to three songs, including one with Richard Thompson. 2008s Dreams of Breathing Underwater featured all original material and was conceived as a sequel to her 2000 album, Angels & Cigarettes. In 2010, Carthy teamed up with her mother, Norma Waterson, for Gift, their first album as a duo. She would later repeat this duo format with her father, Martin Carthy, on 2014s spare and elegant The Moral of the Elephant. In between those two releases was 2011s solo outing, Neptune, which also served to launch her label, Hem Hem, as well as 2013 solo anthology from Topic Records called Wayward Daughter. Working with the Wayward Band, a large 12-piece band she formed following the Wayward Daughter release, Carthy issued 2017s Big Machine, a lively fusion of traditional music, rock, and jazz styles. The following year saw a second collaboration with her mother called Anchor, which was credited to Norma Waterson & Eliza Carthy with the Gift Band. Due to problems regarding the initial financing of the Big Machine project, the members of the Wayward Band did not receive their full wages for their work. Describing the situation a "monumental con," Carthy recorded her first solo album in 14 years, Restitute, to raise the money to fully compensate her collaborators. An initial limited-edition pressing of Restitute was released in February 2019 and quickly sold out. The following May, the venerable British folk label Topic Records reissued the album in a more widely available edition.

Eliza Carthy & The Kings of Calicutt : Allmusic album Review : Eliza Carthys second album, Eliza Carthy & the Kings of Calicutt, is a wonderful set of traditional English folk that sounds fresh and alive, not sterile and ancient. Carthy has a superb ear, assembling a set of traditional songs that have provocative lyrics and strong melodies, and then she is brave enough to let herself and her band tear through them with passion, playing them as if they were written today, not a century ago. And thats what makes the album work: the songs are great, and theyre played with a vital vigor that makes them sound fresh.

Red Rice : Allmusic album Review : Being the daughter of veteran British folkies Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson creates rather high expectations for Eliza Carthy, but on this ambitious double album she proves she can deliver. The conceit here is that each disc has its own jewelbox and its own style. Red is electric folk-fusion mixed with modern modes, while Rice uses more traditional means with subtler modernization. Each album has its charm. Red opens with an original called "Accordion Song (Accidental Saturday Night Kitchen Mix)," which combines a Cajun-sounding accordion with more typical but clever English folk music. One instrumental "Stingo/The Stacking Reel" combines Irish fiddling with the drumnbass style of Medeski, Martin & Wood. On Red Carthy succeeds where many who have attempted folk with a twist have failed -- she manages to impart new beats on old songs without making them sound merely ersatz. Rice starts off with the wonderful traditional "Blow the Winds" sung by Carthy accompanied by Ed Boyd on bouzouki, combined with a Carthy original reel, "The Game of Draughts." Many of the songs on Rice have the "square" rhythms of English folk music, and Carthy consistently brings a nice bounce to it, like a cheerful rendition of "Yankee Doodle Dandy." After a couple of energetic and engaging instrumentals made up of a jig, a hornpipe, and the like, Carthy accompanies herself on piano in a melancholy rendition of "Benjamin Bowmaneer," a traditional in the spirit of "John Barleycorn Must Die." While nothing on Red Rice may be revolutionary, it all speaks to the heart. Carthy has demonstrated that she can deliver in both the old way and the new.

Angels & Cigarettes : Allmusic album Review : Eliza Carthy comes from a family steeped in traditional folk, so it may seem somewhat disconcerting to see her with blue-streaked hair and pierced nose. While the music itself shows that Carthy hasnt completely turned her back on her roots, she is clearly determined to make her own path. Grounded in the folk and singer/songwriter school, she doesnt mind lacing her sound with pop rhythms, keyboards, and even trip-hop. Call it experimental folk. "Beautiful Girl" pushes forward with electronics and driving drums, creating a catchy beat that wouldnt be out of place on a Madonna album. However, the difference is the words, with biting lyrics like "Beautiful girl I know youre probably dead clever/But youre only gorgeous once and youll be clever forever." The opening track, "Whispers of Summer," is much more folky, with Carthys fiddle rising above the drum track to create a danceable melody. This cut is more upbeat than much of the material on the album. "The Company of Men" begins with a lyric about giving sexual favors "to men who didnt want me anymore"; the more oblique "Poor Little Me" is about a death, perhaps an abortion. Songs like "Train Song" and "Fuse" explore love and lust, themes that run throughout Angels & Cigarettes. These lyrics are at times emotionally bare, and everyone may not be comfortable with Carthys revelations. But she seems determined to purge these emotions by turning them into art. The result is ten well-written songs, filled with searching lyrics and an innovative sound. For those who enjoy folk thats willing to take musical chances, Angels & Cigarettes is a gratifying release.

On Reflection : Allmusic album Review : Drawn from the two albums that Eliza Carthy and Nancy Kerr made as a duo at the start of their careers in 1993 and 1995 (actually drawn far more from Shape of Scrape than Eliza Carthy & Nancy Kerr, their debut), this does offer some new pieces: two from Carthy -- "Fen" and "3/2 Hornpipes" (not recorded with Kerr, but musicians she performs with currently) -- while Kerr offers "Reel du Pendu" and "Port in Brandy," both of which have appeared on other albums of hers, in addition to a new version of "Dance to Your Daddy/The Flaming Drones." Its perhaps apt that they should be allowed to add the new stuff as a counterweight to the very young selves who recorded those two duet albums. However, even as teenagers, they were very accomplished -- listen to "Waterloo Fair/Speed the Plough" to hear just how good. While there are some very well-known pieces ("Growing [The Trees They Do Grow High]" and "Bonnie Light Horseman"), the majority of the material shows a depth of knowledge to be expected from the daughters of respected folk musicians. As a look back to the start of their respective careers, its a valuable snapshot -- certainly to those who dont own the original albums.

Anglicana : Allmusic album Review : Following her brief, more mainstream association with Warner Bros., Eliza Carthy returns to folk, the music she loves best, and does so with renewed vigor. Over the course of several albums (apart from the Angels & Cigarettes detour), shes pushed at renewing traditional English folk, bringing something new and fresh to the songs, and this is no exception. Interestingly, though, the most arresting track is "Worcester City," whose intensity and roaring fiddle line (its worth noting that Carthy keeps improving as a fiddle player) brings to mind Liege & Lief-era Fairport Convention. Her fiddle playing, in fact, is of international stature these days -- just listen to the live "In London So Fair," for example. That shes very aware of contemporary music is evident on "Pretty Ploughboy," where the rhythm track seems like a cross between a Nine Inch Nails lie and Tom Waits eccentricity. "Little Gypsy Girl" brings in her mother, Norma Waterson, and her cousin to add delicious harmonies, while "Bold Privateer" shows that shes become a folksinger of real lasting quality -- truly the child of her parents (and she celebrates her fathers sixtieth birthday with "Dr. Mcmbe"). Carthys grown rapidly as a musician, and done it all in public, but with the aptly named Anglicana, exploring the possibilities of English song from her version of Harry Coxs "The Tide Was Flowing" all the way into the 21st century, shes certainly reached her full maturity.

The Definitive Collection : Allmusic album Review : Hot on the heels of its wondrous and necessary Watersons box set, Topic Records issues this nifty little compilation of material from British folk enfant terribles Eliza Carthy, the daughter of Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy. Culled from her four solo outings, both Waterson/Carthy outings, and her guest appearance on Oliver Knights Mysterious Day, Ms. Carthys considerable writing, fiddling, and singing skills are all in evidence here in spades. These 13 tracks go a long way to offering the evidence that traditional music is not dead, nor is it staid in its wool. Her quirky sense of humor, poignant melodic and harmonic sensibilities, and her keen arrangement styles make this one of the brightest collections to come down the boards in years.

Rough Music : Allmusic album Review : Eliza Carthy officially inherits the British folk crown from her parents with the willfully traditional Rough Music. Described in the liner notes as "a form of community punishment practiced all over England" (basically a public beating for a heinous social crime), Rough Music sounds like a lost pre-percussion Steeleye Span record filtered through A.L. Lloyds whaling collection Leviathan! Carthys strong fiddling and powerful vocals -- she really is beginning to surpass Norma -- are ably enhanced by the chiseled performance of her backing band, the Ratcatchers. Together they celebrate longstanding English traditions like public execution ("Turpin Hero"), syphilis ("The Unfortunate Lass"), and alcohol ("Tom Brown") with equal parts reverence, earnestness, and mischief. Primarily arranged for violin, viola, double bass, and melodeon, Rough Music also features lovely a cappella cuts like "Maid on the Shore" and enough fiery instrumentals to keep your feet on the cobblestones during the long walk home from the pub. In fact, theres not a moment on Rough Music that isnt essential listening. Highly recommended.

Dreams of Breathing Underwater : Allmusic album Review : Fiddler, singer and songwriter Eliza Carthy, inheritor of the mightiest musical genes in all of England (her father is folk legend Martin Carthy, her mother the equally legendary singer Norma Waterson), has always exhibited a wonderfully healthy willingness to break out of the folk music ghetto without ever feeling the need to turn her back on it entirely, and this album sees her really coming into her own as an artist. Songs like the blues-rocking "Follow the Dollar" and the soulful, almost trip-hoppy "Rows of Angels" clearly demonstrate her nearly effortless ability to rock out powerfully in a not-entirely-straightforward way, while weird and eerie tracks like "Two Tears" and "Simple Things" expose a darker, more troubled side of her muse that sounds like its been steeped a bit too long in Tom Waits back catalog. At her best, she flexes musical muscles that are unlike any youre likely to encounter anywhere else: notice, for example, the deeply complex "Little Bigman," a song that simultaneously evokes the British music hall, doo wop, 60s skiffle, and even traditional village bands, all as a setting for a wonderful vocal arrangement that never sounds quite as complicated as it actually is. And "Simple Things" takes horribly twisted guitars and a skittering funk beat and presses them into service behind what sounds like one of the most passionate and ambivalent love songs ever written. Not every moment is brilliant -- if it were, shed be inhuman, and "Mr. Magnifico" is indeed more than a bit self-indulgent (though the flamenco handclaps are a nice touch). But whats not brilliant is at least interesting, and easily 80-percent of it is brilliant.

Gift : Allmusic album Review : British folk giants Eliza Carthy and Norma Waterson have collaborated on numerous projects over the years, but Gift marks the first time that the mother and daughter have released a collection of songs as an official duo. Backed by the usual assortment of English folk dynasty members like Martin Carthy, Danny Thompson, Aiden Curran, Martin Simpson and various other Watersons, Gift offers up the usual amalgamation of traditional songs, all of which are driven through the snow by Carthy and Waterson’s rich, commanding voices. Opening with a rousing rendition of Appalachian spiritual “Wayfaring Stranger” and closing with the gorgeous, seafaring ballad “Shallow Brown,” Gift is an effortless compendium of ancestral music, crafted by two of its greatest champions, that more than lives up to its name.

The Moral of the Elephant : Allmusic album Review : With singer/fiddler Eliza Carthy already two decades into her own career, its a bit of a wonder how she and her folk legend father Martin Carthy managed to avoid making a record together as a father/daughter duo. Sure, there have been numerous family collaborations under the Waterson:Carthy banner alongside Martin and mother Norma Waterson, but 2014s The Moral of the Elephant carries its own unique charms. Succinct and elegantly simple in its execution, Elephant is very much the type of British folk album with which Martin first made his name back in the 60s and early 70s. Acoustic guitar, fiddle, and both solo and shared vocal performances make up the entirety of the 11 mostly traditional selections. Rather than turning in a collection of sweet vocal duets or fiery fiddle/guitar sets, the Carthys have birthed a far more subtle creature full of thoughtful, often moody fare and beautifully understated musicianship. Its hard not to hear echoes of her mothers distinct voice in Elizas nuanced, earthy delivery on tracks like the stark "Grand Conversation on Napoleon" and her beautiful interpretation of the wistful, recently unearthed Molly Drake (mother of folk icon Nick Drake) ballad "Happiness." Matched with Martins gracefully time-worn voice on the haunting six-minute centerpiece "The Elephant," they seem like two troubadours lost somewhere in time. As musicians, both father and daughter are at the top of their game, playing with a richness and hard-won grace that can only come from a lifetime of experience. A late-career gem for Martin and a mid-career milestone for Eliza, the first family of British folk have managed to deliver a classic in its field.
