Allmusic Biography : An indie art rock outfit based in Manchester, England Everything Everything formed in late 2007 around the talents of drummer Mike Spearman, vocalist, guitarist, and laptop cowboy Jonathan Higgs, bass player Jeremy Pritchard, and guitar player Alex Robershaw, all of whom share (professionally) the last name "Everything." Beholden to no single formula, Everything Everything are as accessible as R. Kelly and Michael Jackson and as heady as Ezra Pound and Steve Reich, while drawing from a well that runs as deep as the Beatles and Bowie. XL Recordings were alerted to the bands innovative and off-kilter approach and put out its first single, "Suffragette Suffragette," on limited 7" vinyl in 2008. After a year of touring, the four-piece released its breakthrough single, "MY, KZ, UR BF," late in 2009, again as a limited 7", but this time through London-based indie Young and Lost Club. The quartet then appeared on the longlist of the prominent BBC Sound of 2010 Award and shortly thereafter signed to Geffen Records. Their debut album, Man Alive, appeared in the summer of 2010 and courted critical acclaim for their unpredictable, infectious pop, led by vocalist Higgs unmistakable falsetto delivery. The success of the record was capped off with a nomination for the 2011 Mercury Prize alongside a support slot with Snow Patrol on their nationwide arena tour. Two years after their debut, Everything Everything moved to RCA and released the Cough Cough EP during the summer of 2012, with another full-length following 2013. Entitled Arc, here the band consolidated its frenetic, genre-marauding style with Man Alive producer David Kosten. Lauded by music critics and fans alike, the album reached the Top Five in the U.K. charts, and the band embarked on its first headlining European tour in support of the release. Everything Everything took a break from touring in 2014, making only limited local live appearances, and worked on their third long-player with producer Stuart Price (the Killers, Pet Shop Boys). Led by the danceable singles "Distant Past" and Regret" in early 2015, the sociopolitically affected Get to Heaven was released in June 2015. The band re-emerged in 2016 with the stand-alone single "I Believe It Now," which featured in BT Sports Premier League shows. Continuing in the political vein they set forth on Get to Heaven, Everything Everything responded to escalating instability on their fourth LP, A Fever Dream, which arrived in August 2017.

Man Alive : Allmusic album Review : Placed further down the prestigious BBC Sound of 2010 poll than fellow Mancunians Hurts and Delphic, art pop quartet Everything Everything have since quietly gone on to become the citys most celebrated new band, receiving nominations for both the Ivor Novello Awards and the Mercury Music Prize as well as earning favorable comparisons with indie greats such as XTC, Talking Heads, and Radiohead. Produced by David Kosten (Bat for Lashes, Guillemots), their debut album, Man Alive, certainly justifies the attention. Packed with barbershop quartet harmonies, experimental rhythms, and often unintelligible lyrics, its 12 buoyant tracks weave around a playful but intelligent melting pot of sounds like a hyperactive toddler, whether channeling the staccato R&B; of early Timbaland on "Schoolin," echoing the downbeat electronica of Thom Yorkes solo work on "Final Form," or venturing into indie disco territory on the brilliantly jerky "My KZ, Ur BF" and the "almost as trippy as its video" "Photoshop Handsome." Indeed, the album, defined by Jonathan Higgs giddy falsetto, appears to revel in its fidgetiness, often changing course midsong, as on "Suffragette Suffragette," which lurches from Vampire Weekend-esque Afro-beat to monstrous Led Zeppelin blues-rock and back again, and "Qwerty Finger," whose initial fuzzy garage rock sound makes way for a rather tortured slice of dreamy prog. But before any seasickness begins to kick in, Everything Everything provide a few more calming numbers, and while they would perhaps have been better off sequenced throughout the album rather than toward the end, the chiming dubstep of "NASA Is on Your Side," the harpsichord-led baroque pop of "Two for Nero," and the somber nu-synth of "Tin (The Manhole)" show theyre no less innovative when embracing their more melancholic side. Higgs has stated that the one rule while recording Man Alive was "not to sound like anyone else," and while their influences are obvious, theyve pieced them together in such a stylish and creative way that its difficult to deny that theyve accomplished what they set out to achieve.

Get to Heaven : Allmusic album Review : Co-produced by the band and Stuart Price, who previously produced records for Scissor Sisters, the Killers, and Pet Shop Boys, Everything Everythings third full-length album is a dance-friendly if serious-minded set showcasing their British art rock sensibilities via a through-line of vigor. While grooving and uptempo throughout -- with melodic percussion, electric guitar solos, and far-reaching melodies infusing persistent beats -- Get to Heaven is above all mired in its time; its angst-ridden lyrics acknowledge and often examine the (seemingly ineffectual) culture of technology, including 24-hour social and corporate media, amidst lifes continued tragedies and injustice. The albums opening line hits the listener with the sparsely accompanied "So you think theres no meaning/In anything that we do?" "To the Blade" later bursts into guitar-heavy, rhythmic synth rock, both catchy and agitated, like much to follow. The pounding "Regret" takes on the anxiety of one tuned in to the contemporary Western First World: "Maybe Im a human/A trying to click undo man/Or maybe an automaton/Oh howd it all go so wrong?" and "First youll see me on the news/Then never again/Im rolling in my grave/Feeling like a grenade." The song goes on to muse that perhaps its not as bad for someone who never hoped for anything better. The title track similarly tackles the headlines with dark humor and cutting observation: "Theres bodies in the road!/Where nothing else will grow!/Im thinking What was my password? as the vultures land." The lyrical despondency is wrapped in entirely digestible, brightly colored musical packages with Jonathan Higgs distinctive, frenetic falsetto over shimmering, bouncy terrain. Less capricious than prior releases but still diverse (the rap-led "Distant Past," orchestral synths of "Fortune 500," and alternately clubby, poppy, and ambient sections of "The Wheel [Is Turning Now]), Get to Heavens experimental dance-rock hits closer to Blur than oft-compared XTC or Radiohead, with its more lucid production and sardonic tone. The lyrical content, along with the albums constant energy, make this Everything Everythings most focused effort thus far, one that bundles brawny indie rock with 2010s Zeitgeist.
