Fishbone | ||
Allmusic Biography : Combining equal parts of deep funk, high-energy punk, and frantic ska, the Los Angeles-based Fishbone was one of the most distinctive and eclectic alternative rock bands of the late 80s. With their hyperactive, self-conscious diversity, goofy sense of humor, and sharp social commentary, the group gained a sizable cult following during the late 80s, yet they were never able to earn a mainstream audience. Led by vocalist/saxophonist Angelo Moore, the band formed in 1979 while the members were still in junior high; the original lineup comprised Moore, Chris Dowd, Kendall Jones, Walter Kibby II, and John Norwood Fisher. After performing in local clubs during the early 80s, the group signed with Columbia Records in the mid-80s, releasing a self-titled EP in 1985. The following year, Fishbone released their first full-length album, In Your Face. While it was marred by a somewhat slick production, the sheer energy of their performances burned through the slightly polished surface. In 1987, the band released the Christmas EP Its a Wonderful Life (Gonna Have a Good Time). Truth and Soul (1988), Fishbones second album, captured the band at their most ambitious, as they slammed back and forth between heavy metal and funk, throwing in an acoustic number and a cover of Curtis Mayfields "Freddies Dead" for balance. The album expanded their audience and charted at number 153. However, the band didnt record a new album for another three years. In the meantime, they made two EPs -- Ma and Pa (1989) and Bonin in the Boneyard (1990) -- which basically comprised several B-sides. Before 1991s The Reality of My Surroundings Fishbone added second guitarist John Bigham. The Reality of My Surroundings didnt depart from the bands reckless eclecticism; it refined it. The album was a hit, peaking at number 49 and receiving positive reviews. However, the record didnt establish the band as a mainstream success, nor did 1993s Give a Monkey a Brain and Hell Swear Hes the Center of the Universe, despite their appearance at the third Lollapalooza. Even when the third wave ska revival began to rise to popularity in 1996, Fishbone was left behind, as their 1996 record Chim Chims Bad Ass Revenge -- their first album for Arista -- was ignored, as was the double-disc compilation Fishbone 101: Nuttasaurusmeg Fossil Fuelin. Despite their poor sales, the group remained a popular concert attraction, issuing the all-star Psychotic Friends Nuttwerx in the spring of 2000. Unfortunately, Hollywood Records had little support for the album and it disappeared after a few disappointing months. They were dropped from the label the following summer, with side projects and various other things keeping them busy during this rough period. An EP featuring a 20-minute jam with Primus, entitled Friendliest Psychosis of All, was released on their own label in the spring of 2002, followed by a live album full of new songs, Live at the Temple Bar and More, in the summer. In 2006 their album Still Stuck in Your Throat appeared in Europe. It arrived in the U.S. in April the next year.

In Your Face : Allmusic album Review : Fishbones first full-length release, 1986s In Your Face was a far more focused affair than their self-titled debut EP from 1985, but the band was still honing their original and genre-spanning sound. While it would not be perfected until their 1988 release Truth and Soul, In Your Face remains an important musical stepping stone for Fishbone. Few other bands at the time (perhaps only the Red Hot Chili Peppers) were attempting to merge different musical styles together as they were. Ska, funk, and punk rock are again put into the musical blender this time around, along with often thought-provoking lyrics, resulting in several strong compositions. The opening track "When Problems Arise" is an enjoyable, stomping little ditty for which a rarely aired video clip was filmed, while other highlights include the up-tempo numbers "A Selection" and "Give It Up," the Caribbean-tinged "Cholly," the desperate plea of "I Wish I Had a Date," and the gorgeous ballad "Movement in the Light." Also featured are the funk-workouts "In the Air" and "Knock It," the furious punk-rocker "Simon Says the Kingpin," and the goofy, album-closing instrumental "Post Cold War Politics."

Truth and Soul : Allmusic album Review : By 1988, alternative/college rock was becoming a recognizable force in the mainstream. Several bands were big enough to play arenas, and many even earned gold and platinum albums. The tide was clearly changing for such previously misunderstood bands such as Fishbone. Their second full-length release Truth and Soul was issued that year, and remains one of the bands (and the 80s) very best. On past albums, Fishbones sound was a melting pot of ska, punk, and funk. This time, hard rock has been added to the mix -- especially evident in guitarist Kendall Jones six-string work, with often-spectacular results. Also, the songwriting has improved tremendously and has become much more focused here. The party anthem "Bonin in the Boneyard" is one of the bands finest (with superhuman bass work by Norwood Fisher), as is the ska-based "Ma and Pa," and a cover of Curtis Mayfields early-70s hit "Freddies Dead." Also featured are several musically varied tracks that deal with the same topic: racism, past and present ("Deep Inside," "One Day," "Subliminal Fascism," "Slow Bus Movin," "Ghetto Soundwave"). Truth and Soul remains Fishbones most consistent album.

The Reality of My Surroundings : Allmusic album Review : When Fishbones The Reality of My Surroundings was released in 1991, several critics went as far as comparing its all-encompassing brilliance to that of Sgt. Peppers. While it may have been too high of a praise, Fishbones third full-length album is indeed exceptional. Their preceding album, Truth and Soul, had been straightforward in its approach. In contrast, Reality is more unpredictable and off-the-wall, but just as gripping. While not all of the selections exactly hit the spot (the pointless four-part "If I Were a...Id," "Naz-Tee Mayen," and "Babyhead"), its many bright spots outshine the misfires. Fishbone continue to explore their hard rock side on such standouts as "Fight the Youth," "Behavior Control Technician," "Those Days Are Gone," and the crushing album closer, "Sunless Saturday." But as on their older releases, other music styles are digested and spit out -- the wonderful tribute to Sly & the Family Stone, "Everyday Sunshine," the reggae-tinged "Pray to the Junkiemaker," the explosive punk rocker "Pressure," and the humorous funk of "Housework." The Reality of My Surroundings would prove to be Fishbones last great album, unfortunately.

Give a Monkey a Brain... And He’ll Swear He’s the Center of the Universe : Allmusic album Review : After the critical and commercial success of their 1991 tour de force The Reality of My Surroundings, youd think that it would smooth sailing for the many members of Fishbone -- not quite. Despite the fact that the band was viewed by fans as a close-knit family, problems were brewing behind the scenes. Depending on who you believed, founding guitarist Kendall Jones was either growing disenchanted with the bands musical direction or he was brainwashed by a cult. Either way, he quit the band immediately after the release for 1993s lackluster Give a Monkey a Brain. While the funk/punk/ska sound on earlier albums was still evident here and there, this is considered Fishbones heavy metal album by longtime fans. The witty humor and thought-provoking songwriting had been lost and replaced with such predictable fare as the grunge-sounding "Swim," and such woefully off-the-mark compositions as "The Warmth of Your Breath" and "Drunk Skitzo." While a few songs were decent ("Unyielding Conditioning," and "No Fear"), the album was a severe letdown. What could have been Fishbones ultimate breakthrough nearly turned out to be a career killer. After the ensuing tour wrapped up, keyboardist Chris Dowd left as well, and Columbia dropped the band.

Chim Chim's Badass Revenge : Allmusic album Review : Despite the underachievement of their previous record, 1993s Give a Monkey a Brain, the defection of two founding members (guitarist Kendall Jones and keyboardist Chris Dowd), and the discarding from their longtime label Columbia, Fishbone stuck it out. Signing with Arista subsidiary Rowdy Records, the now 5-piece band issued Chim Chims Badass Revenge in 1996. Unfortunately, the album only furthered Fishbones downward slide. One bright spot was that the sound wasnt as metallic as its predecessor was -- it brings to mind the bands earlier albums. The songwriting is still not up to snuff, however, evidenced on such predictable and sophomoric songs as "Beergut" and especially "In the Cube" (sample lyric: "Deep in the toilet, Doo deep doo"). Although the band was included on the Warped tour around the time of the albums release, Chim Chims Badass Revenge suffered the same cruel commercial fate as its predecessor. And repeating the conclusion of their previous tour, another longtime bandmember would leave (drummer Fish), and Fishbone would leave their record company once again.

Fishbone 101: Nuttasaurusmeg Fossil Fuelin' the Fonkay : Allmusic album Review : Comprised of one disc of hits and one disc of rarities, the double-disc retrospective Fishbone 101: Nuttasaurusmeg Fossil Fuelin the Fonkay attempts to fulfill the needs of both the collector and the casual fan and winds up satisfying neither. The first disc, featuring hits and cult classics "Freddies Dead" and "Everyday Sunshine," is a fine overview of their career, hitting nearly all of the bands best moments. On its own, it would be the album to own for casual fans. However, the second disc, while of utmost interest to dedicated followers, is filled with B-sides, demos, alternate takes, and rarities that will simply bore neophytes. Of course, all of this material is necessary for collectors, but they will probably be frustrated by the extraneous hits collection on the set. If Fishbone 101 had been separated into two individual collections, both albums would have fulfilled their goals perfectly. As it stands, its a set that is bound to frustrate both casual and hardcore fans, and thereby can only be recommended with reservations.

The Psychotic Friends Nuttwerx : Allmusic album Review : Regrouping with an approximately half-new lineup, Fishbone returned in 2000 on Hollywood Records with their first album of new material since 1996s Chim Chims Badass Revenge. Sporting a full title of Fishbone and the Familyhood Nextperience Presents: The Psychotic Friends Nuttwerx, the record presents a bevy of guest performers, from funk legends George Clinton and Rick James to Gwen Stefani, lead singer of fellow California ska aficionados No Doubt, to legendary underground comedian Blowfly, to -- of all people -- Donny Osmond; theres also an assortment of fellow pioneers in the fusion of hard alternative rock with funk, including Perry Farrell of Janes Addiction, H.R. of Bad Brains, and the instrumental portion of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Still and all, its definitely Fishbones show, and thanks to the bands most memorable and focused batch of songs in quite some time -- even not counting the covers of Sly & the Family Stones "Everybody Is a Star" and the Temptations "Shakey Ground" -- its an often formidable show at that. The record concentrates most heavily on the funk and ska sides of the Fishbone sound, lending a sunny, good-humored vibe throughout; plus, with a total playing time of 45 minutes, the albums eclectic grooves are kept from meandering or growing stale. Refocused and re-energized, The Psychotic Friends Nuttwerx is far and away Fishbones best album in nearly a decade.

Live at the Temple Bar and More : Allmusic album Review : Fishbone debuts eight new songs on Live at the Temple Bar and More, their soundtrack to the independent film Everything Went Nuttz. Acting as their first release since Hollywood Records dropped the band a year before, the album shows them performing the same blend of funk, ska, and metal that they struck upon in the late 80s. Songs like "Are U Wit It" have the tense slow crawl of a good funk song and the acidic guitar of Spacey T., and the band seems like theyre having a good time on the songs here. But much like their post-Reality of My Surroundings work in the 90s, there is a certain emotional element missing for the music to truly connect. Stepping back from their own material and performing it like a crazed cover band, they never quite seem like they care about what they are playing. This is not to take away from the talents of anyone involved, especially charismatic singers Angelo Moore and Dirty Walt (aka Walter Adam Kibby II). But none of them seem like they mean it; instead delivering a confidently played album with little more than manic genre-hopping to keep things lively. In a studio setting, these songs may have had the chance to come to life, and their nuances may have been showcased. But these performances put energy before anything else, robbing these songs of their impact because of the brash performance style involved. There is much to admire on the eight tracks here, but few of them stand up to multiple listens, or are catchy enough to remember afterwards.

Live in Amsterdam : Allmusic album Review : Not only was Fishbones Live in Amsterdam recorded in the famously liberal European burg, but the set was part of the Cannabis Cup, an annual celebration thats undoubtedly rife with the pungent aroma of goofy stoner puns ("Fishbone is budacious!"). Regardless, this is a great package for the bands faithful, with 70 minutes of music and a DVD of the show. Angelo C. Moore begins with "X-QZ/Me/Dr. Mad/Vibe./Housecall/Pull-Ease," a pointed spoken word piece about race, rock stardom, and record industry shenanigans. (The last is something Fishbone understands all too well.) It builds into a rousing call to arms -- "Fishbone soldiers!" -- and the band joins in with its trademark twisted funk. "Alcohol" (1996s Chim Chims Badass Revenge) has a distinct Two-Tone vibe, and "Just Allow" and the brass/guitar-heavy "In the Heet of Anger" are separate slices of the classic Fishbone sound, proving the band still has that something through 20-plus years and numerous lineup shifts. Live in Amsterdam is still principally a superfan document. Some selections extend to eight and nine minutes, and the energy between the band and its audience -- while palpable and vibrant -- rarely includes the casual listener. Its almost like Fishbones gotten so great at being a cult act that the guys have stopped courting new ears. That said, Fishbone soldiers everywhere will love the energetic takes on "Skankin to the Beat," "Sunless Saturday," and the classic "Bonin in the Boneyard."

Still Stuck in Your Throat : Allmusic album Review : Although Fishbone has not troubled the charts in over a decade, the Los Angeles-based ska/punk band never broke up or stopped touring; on the contrary. With only singer/saxophonist Angelo Moore and bassist John Norwood Fisher remaining from the original lineup, the group has passed the 20-year mark as a performing unit, which is long enough for it to have become established in the 80s nostalgia circuit. Not surprisingly, its last two albums have been live collections, Live at the Temple Bar and More (2002) and Live in Amsterdam (2005). The guest-star-filled The Psychotic Friends Nuttwerx (2000) was the bands last studio album until Still Stuck in Your Throat, the title of which is both a play on Fishbones name and a reminder that the group hasnt ever gone away. Like many bands making a new album after many years, especially those that have undergone extensive personnel changes, the group seems to have been concerned with delivering tracks that sound like classic Fishbone. Those frantic ska rhythms and that belligerent punk attitude are therefore in place, along with Fishbones characteristic quirkiness in titles like "Jack Ass Brigade," "Let Dem Hos Fight," and the slightly dated "Party with Saddam." Moore, Fisher, and co. also evoke such funk predecessors as Parliament-Funkadelic, notably in the lengthy "We Just Lose Our Minds." But if Still Stuck in Your Throat sounds convincingly like a Fishbone record, thats not to say it sounds like a great one. David Kahne, who produced some of their great albums, returns to mix this one, but he would have been more useful in his old job, helping to sort out arrangements and performances that sometimes become raucous to the point of near-chaos. It isnt until the end with their cover of Sublimes "Date Rape" (repeated from the tribute album Look at All the Love We Found) that the current members of Fishbone actually sound like theyre enjoying themselves on an album they probably would prefer not to call a comeback attempt.

Fishbone Live : Allmusic album Review : The phrase "best experienced live" has followed Fishbone around since what seems like their inception -- as theyve long been one of rocks most energetic and over-the-top live bands. Which makes the fact that they never released an official live recording until 2009, ‘Fishbone Live, quite baffling (which was nearly 30 years since originally forming). The multi-membered group -- which from the original line-up, only includes singer/saxophonist Angelo Moore and bassist John Norwood Fisher at this point -- wisely sticks to the classics, and forgoes most of the inconsistent material of their post-1993 releases. So what you get is basically a Fishbone "best of," set on a concert stage in Bordeaux, France. Name a Fishbone classic, and more times than not, its included here, such as "Bonin in the Boneyard," "Sunless Saturday," "Give It Up," "Ma & Pa," "Party at Ground Zero," and "Everyday Sunshine," as well as a tribute to the Fishbone-influenced Sublime, with a cover of "Date Rape." Until a live recording from the ‘80s surfaces from the vault (back when the original/definitive Fishbone line-up was slaying audiences on a nightly basis), ‘Fishbone Live will certainly do. [Note - Also included in ‘Fishbone Live is an 18-track companion DVD, which includes several tracks not on the CD]
