Four Tet
Allmusic Biography : Perhaps the definitive indie electronic artist, Four Tet (Kieran Hebden) is a British DJ and producer whose experimental yet highly accessible recordings, which blend organic and electronic sounds, have earned widespread acclaim from critics and fans of electronic music as well as indie rock. Hebdens work as Four Tet has been influenced by a wide range of genres, including spiritual jazz, Krautrock, folk music, and hip-hop. His compositions are generally abstract yet melodically and tonally rich, and they often combine glitchy electronics with acoustic instrumentation. While much of his work has generally been downtempo or midtempo, the late 2000s and 2010s have found him exploring dance music, particularly genres such as U.K. garage and house, reflecting the influence of pirate radio culture. Indicative of Hebdens eclectic nature, he has collaborated with artists ranging from jazz drummer Steve Reid to Radioheads Thom Yorke, and has produced albums by improv collective Sunburned Hand of the Man and Syrian dabke singer Omar Souleyman, among others.

Hebden, a native of Londons Putney district, first became known as the guitar player for Fridge, an instrumental group he co-founded with childhood friends Adem Ilhan and Sam Jeffers in 1995. Mixing rock instrumentation with electronics, the groups textural, rhythmic music earned comparisons to post-rock acts such as Tortoise and Tarwater. The band released several acclaimed albums and EPs on Trevor Jacksons Output Recordings and eventually Go! Beat. The former label also issued Hebdens debut solo release (as 4T Recordings), the 1997 single "Double Density," while the latter released "Falkens Maze," a 1998 single produced under the moniker Joshua Falken. Hebden debuted his Four Tet project with the 1998 single Thirtysixtwentyfive, a lengthy, jazzy mood piece. Four Tets debut full-length, Dialogue, appeared in early 1999, and later in the year his remix of the opening track of Aphex Twins Selected Ambient Works, Vol. II was included on Warps Warp 10+3: Remixes compilation, giving him further exposure. Four Tet collaborated with Rothko on the Rivers Become Oceans single, released by Lo Recordings, and a split EP with Pole followed on Leaf in 2000.

Four Tet signed to Domino, which issued his second album, Pause, in 2001. The album featured more prominent usage of acoustic guitars than his previous work, leading the press to dub his sound "folktronica." During the same year, Hebden started an independent label called Text Recordings, debuting with the first EP by electro-folk songwriter Koushik, in addition to releasing Fridges fourth album, Happiness. Following the EPs Paws, No More Mosquitoes, and The Weight of My Words (with Kings of Convenience), Four Tet released the single "Im on Fire" in 2002. This preceded the heavily sample-based 2003 full-length Rounds, which became Hebdens breakthrough album, earning widespread critical acclaim and eventually appearing on numerous year-end (and decade-end) lists. Four Tet opened for Radiohead on their European tour, and subsequently remixed their song "Scatterbrain." Following a split single with noise rock band Hella and the May 2004 release of an EP built around Rounds highlight "My Angel Rocks Back and Forth," Four Tet compiled a volume of the LateNightTales mix series.

In 2005, Hebden began collaborating with free jazz drummer Steve Reid, eventually touring together and releasing several albums of improvised music. Four Tets fourth full-length, the upbeat, joyous Everything Ecstatic, appeared during the same year, as did Everything Ecstatic, Pt. 2, which consisted of a DVD containing videos for all of the albums tracks, plus a CD EP of additional material. The year 2006 saw the release of the double-CD collection Remixes, which included one disc of Hebdens takes on tracks by artists ranging from Madvillain to His Name Is Alive to Sia, as well as a disc of Four Tet tracks as remixed by J Dilla, Battles, Sa-Ra Creative Partners, and others. Four Tets volume of !K7s DJ-Kicks series appeared in 2006 as well. Hebden released albums with Reid (Tongues) and Fridge (The Sun) in 2007, resuming work as Four Tet with 2008s Ringer, a four-song EP of hypnotic minimal techno tracks. He continued in this direction with 2009s haunting Moth 12", a collaboration with elusive dubstep producer Burial. A single titled "Love Cry" appeared at the end of the year, and the full-length There Is Love in You was released by Domino in early 2010. By far the most club-friendly Four Tet full-length yet, the album was another critical and commercial success. Later in the year, Hebden released a split 12" with dubstep pioneer Mala on Soul Jazz Records, and played keyboards on Laurie Andersons song "Only an Expert."

In 2011, Four Tet released his third mix CD, Fabriclive.59. He continued releasing low-key singles on Text, including a split release with Daphni (aka Dan Snaith, whose Caribou Vibration Ensemble featured Hebden) and Ego / Mirror, a collaboration with Burial and Thom Yorke. The 2012 release Pink compiled several of these singles. Hebden also occasionally released more stripped-down, club-focused singles as Percussions and KH. Four Tets seventh full-length, a tribute to pirate radio culture titled Beautiful Rewind, appeared in 2013. He also released 0181, a single 38-minute piece consisting of various non-album tracks recorded between 1997 and 2001. Following remix EPs and collaborations and split singles with Rocketnumbernine, Martyn, and Terror Danjah, Four Tet released Morning/Evening, a full-length consisting of two 20-minute tracks, in 2015. Following its release, Hebden and Floating Points produced dance-pop singer Katy Bs song "Calm Down," and Hebden produced a "club version" of Jamie xxs "SeeSaw." Collaborations with Designer and Champion also appeared on Text that year. In 2017, Four Tet released New Energy, a full-length that found him partially revisiting his earlier downtempo sound on tracks like "Two Thousand and Seventeen," in addition to atmospheric house numbers like "SW9 9SL" and "Planet."

Dialogue : Allmusic album Review : Some people might think its easy to explain Fourtet: "Its electronica." It might be easiest to wince at these people and concede, "Yes, well sort of." Fourtet, the one-man DJ project of Fridges Kieran Hebden, doesnt fit so easily into any one category. True, there are beats, samples, and other aspects of turntablism to his music, but there are also live instruments and very real sounding drum tracks -- "organic electronic" might be one way to describe it. Dialogue is Fourtets first proper album (a slew of remixes and 12-inches have come before and after). Sometimes the record is jazzy: Heavy acoustic bass and scattered drums, but alternately, tabla and sitar, are the key focus of the final track. It seems that Hebden is quite happy in any musical setting he creates. None of the album sounds contrived, and theres an underlying earnestness that provides real credibility. Some of the record sounds, at times, like the more sampled passages of Fridge, but not as austere. If youre feeling fed up with stale, predictable electronica, or feeling ready to brave the shores of the electro-isle, this is an excellent album.

Pause : Allmusic album Review : On his second full-length as Four Tet, producer/mixologist/computer kid Kieran Hebden further f*cks with the notion that turntablism and electronica are essentially "nothing more than" computer music. While its true that all the rhythms, melodies, and harmonies here are collaged samples combined with turntable wizardry, uninformed listeners would be hard-pressed to find anything but a few drum loops that sound as if they were composed and recorded by a band. For starters, on his opener, "Glue of the World," acoustic guitars, zithers, harps, and string basses wander around a minor-key riff that is augmented by a slip n slide hip-hop rhythm with a sharp, in-your-face, drum-n-no-bass interlude. The track is a weave; it blends new age, acoustic jazz, and flamenco music in a golden braid that is heavenly. On "Twenty Three," steel drums, bells, and African and Balinese rhythm instruments open the way for an electric piano and acoustic guitar riff aided by a set of congas and bongos to come charging in DJ Shadow style. Just as the West African folk music theme settles, Hebden kicks it with hip-hop and a front line of trumpets, playing a long, slow, languid melody line. Its also beautiful that there are small interludes of found sounds, like typewriter keys re-sequenced against an electric piano to create nothing but an ambient rhythm track that sounds as much like somebody shuffling things around on a desk as anything else -- until you pay attention. On tracks like "Untangle," where the percussion sounds a little less organic, Hebden demonstrates with flashes and cross-fades how rhythms from all over the world can be unified by the turntablists skill -- or perhaps by musicians themselves willing to play together, which would be ideal. Four Tets Pause offers more proof that DJ culture still has plenty to offer, and that Keiran Hebden is just getting started in his experimentation with transcultural electronica. Organic as dirt, and full of an acid-heads sense of space, this ones a winner from start to finish.

Rounds : Allmusic album Review : For his solo projects, Fridges Kieran Hebden is a lo-fi experimentalist who, had he been recording 15 years ago, wouldve been cranking out songs on a four-track recorder instead of a laptop. As demonstrated on his third record, Rounds, hes one of the few musicians capturing all the promise inherent in computer science -- being able to summon, manipulate, and mix any sound imaginable. The record offers something for nearly every audience that could approach it, with a bit of a groove for electronic fans, an obtuse sense of music-making for experimentalists, and a dreamy melodicism sure to endear it to indie pop fans. The opener, "Hands," is especially breathtaking: it begins with a few seconds of drum samples, surgically inserted and ill-timed, but opens into a warm, melodic production with a simple frame-kit beat outlining Hebdens guitar-and-keyboard atmospherics. "My Angel Rocks Back and Forth" features a music box melody playing against softly shaded, backmasked guitar and a subdued, grating percussion line reminiscent of an iron lung. The nine-minute "Unspoken" alternates guitar and piano playing the same beatific melody, over another simple beat and tambourine claps. Though Rounds is experimental by nature, Kieran Hebdens gift for melody and emotional shading allows his records to be enjoyed by an audience wider than merely experimental listeners.

Everything Ecstatic : Allmusic album Review : Kieran Hebden had every right to retreat from the folktronica tag stapled to his Four Tet recordings. Although he was the premier name in the sub-subgenre, and although his productions transcended even the cutest label that could be attached to them, the folktronica term was too clever by half; more importantly, no respectable artist in the indie underground can stand idly by while hes being pigeonholed. Nevertheless, the left turn Hebden has taken into jumpy Krautrock with 2005s Everything Ecstatic will make listeners yearn for the clever, nuanced productions he turned in on Pause and Rounds; fortunately, he hasnt completely forsaken his old ways. Early in the program, Hebden sounds more clearly derivative than he ever has; the spotlight track "Smile Around the Face" has one of Kanye Wests chipmunk divas blandly merging into a sunny-day Avalanches production. "Sun Drums and Soil" begins with the menacing bell tones of an Autechre track and ends with the blatting horns of a free jazz workout, but the barrage of a percussion section never relents over six minutes. "Clouding," a criminally short interlude, is a turning point for Everything Ecstatic -- all of the albums best moments occur on the second half (and they are very good). "Turtle Turtle Up" and the shifting epic "Sleep, Eat Food, Have Visions" are nominally electro productions, but theyre some of the oddest and most attentively produced electro tracks to ever appear on record. (On the latter, the slight influences of the Orb are assimilated into the whole, not pasted on top.) The final track, "You Were There With Me," transforms the sound of Balinese gongs into an isolated, nightmarish production with only a faint heartbeat for a rhythm track. Hopefully, using Everything Ecstatic as necessary distance, Hebden can either return to the sound of his early records or transform his new direction into styles worthy of his production talents.

Remixes : Allmusic album Review : Kieran Hebden hadnt been in action as Four Tet for more than seven years when he compiled Remixes, but the capabilities that are evident here dwarf the talents of those in action twice as long. (Only one remixer sounds like a peer, and thats Aphex Twin, whose 26 Mixes for Cash is the best remix compilation of all time.) This is a two-disc set, divided in a logical manner -- right down the middle, with Hebdens remixes of others on disc one and outsiders remixes of his tracks on disc two. If listeners feel deflated when theyre forced to listen to what others have done with Hebdens work, its only because his own productions are so excellent. His rework of Madvillains "Money Folder" is a beat worthy of Madlib or Jay Dee themselves, and even bests the remix that Jay Dee produced for the Four Tet track "As Serious as Your Life" (which is, of course, included on the second disc). Elsewhere, he places Beth Orton in a curious but rewarding setting -- on a stage backed by the Velvet Underground and the Motown rhythm section -- and gives Radioheads "Skttrbrain" the fractured, distancing production it deserves. His version of Bloc Partys "So Here We Are" is nearly epochal, shimmering like an ice palace for the first four minutes and then, finally and gloriously, coming crashing down with a triumphant finish. The second disc is much less enlightening, except for the presence of Jay Dee and Manitoba; it certainly doesnt help that four versions of the drum-heavy "A Joy" are included.

There Is Love in You : Allmusic album Review : Kieran Hebdens first Four Tet full-length in four years comes after a parade of collaboration albums, DJ dates, remixes, and one EP that sounded strikingly like John Carpenter soundtracking the original Halloween film. Appropriately, There Is Love in You is a reset album, one where Hebden pares his music down to the essentials. (Sorry, no dubstep workouts or pastoral ballads to be found here.) Its the most natural hes sounded on record in years, much more assured than Everything Ecstatic, which bore the brunt of Hebdens wish to snip the folktronica tag by floating an array of (somewhat) iconoclastic tracks. Here, the music consists of little more than soft tones, muted beats, and overlaid music-box melodies. Perhaps not a recipe for greatness, but in keeping with the axiom that a great artist can always shine no matter the materials or medium, There Is Love in You is an accomplished, beautiful record (despite the lack of shiny bits). Vocals, where they appear, are wordless and textural; the few samples are glitchy but warm and hypnotic. The nine-minute single "Love Cry" sounds like Carl Craigs Innerzone Orchestra making an epic childrens record. Overall, There Is Love in You has the spartan precision of Phillip Glass but also, surprisingly, the warmth and vitality of classic Cluster as well. From his debut, Hebden has always made the more alien side of electronic music sound warm and inviting; this not only accomplishes that, but ranks with his best.

Beautiful Rewind : Allmusic album Review : Kieran Hebdens first proper Four Tet album since 2010s There Is Love in You, Beautiful Rewind follows a string of short-form releases that included collaborations with Burial, Thom Yorke, and Rocketnumbernine, in addition to singles issued on the producers Text label. It consists of concise, stylistically scattered tracks that are alternately pretty and scuffed up, with the latter quality notably inspired by garage, grime, and funk aired on U.K. pirate radio stations. Rough breakbeats, jacking thumps, and MC and vocalist samples are laced throughout certain tracks, ranging from the jumbled opener "Gong" to the hypnotic closer "Your Body Feels," where a snippet from 112s Slim and ominous keyboard melodies and textures are eventually joined by stark bass-drum hits and claps. Those who go to Hebden for home-listening ambient material get it through the swirling "Ba Teaches Yoga," the fluttering "Crush," and the pattering sprites streaked across "Unicorn." One highlight, "Aerial," rugged/frantic and spangly/serene, fuses both approaches with astounding finesse. On "Buchla," the sampled MC probably isnt shouting out the synthesizer pioneer checked in the title, but he sounds close enough ("burgler?"), and the track is among Hebdens rawest, most physical work. While the album does seem rather patched together with a lack of focus -- it plays out like a pair of distinct EPs and a couple transitional orphans on shuffle -- theres an irrefutable charm to the restlessness.

Morning/Evening : Allmusic album Review : Kieran Hebden was far from silent surrounding the release of Morning/Evening, the eighth Four Tet album. In 2015, among a typical stream of activity, there was the release of 2011 Until 2014, a compilation of material produced under his Percussions alias, as well as the Strings of Life 12", a roaring update of Derrick Mays early techno touchstone recorded live in 2006 with Steve Reid. Much different from seventh Four Tet album Beautiful Rewind, a set of relatively brief and urgent productions inspired by U.K. pirate radio, Morning/Evening consists of two 20-minute tracks. "Morning" begins with a brushing four-four spring in its step and low melodic drones before a lovely sample of playback singer Lata Mangeshkar enters for the first of several high-in-the-mix instances. At one point, its understated jacking beat makes way for a dazzling array of pattering mechanical percussion, and then it briefly returns, in both cases placed almost inconspicuously in the mix. Its last quarter is all burbling, twinkling ambience. The first two-thirds of "Evening" involve a little light and percolating percussion and sparse keyboard tones that seem to be on the brink of leading to Kraftwerks "The Robots." Along with overlapping spectral vocal phrasings, the track hovers and glistens, then intensifies and gains weight as a basic but effective drum pattern enters for a few minutes and fades away in an equally gradual manner. What verged on ambient tedium around halfway through is, at the end, much closer to a dancefloor tease -- like a more active section were lopped off. This isnt among the most substantive Four Tet albums, but it does reward repeated casual listening.

New Energy : Allmusic album Review : Since the late 2000s, Kieren Hebdens work as Four Tet (plus side ventures like Percussions and KH) has explored club culture more thoroughly than his earlier releases, nodding to pirate radio and U.K. garage with albums like Beautiful Rewind and white-label collaborations with producers such as Burial and Terror Danjah. New Energy, his 2017 full-length, seems somewhat ironically named at first, as it finds him revisiting the downtempo sound of earlier productions such as his 2003 breakthrough, Rounds. Following the brief ambient intro "Alap," "Two Thousand and Seventeen" saunters in and drops an astonishingly gorgeous melody played on what sounds like a hammered dulcimer. A few atmospheric synths and additional effects and samples join it, as well as a plaintive bassline, but the melody speaks volumes, and its touching enough to make it seem like the best Four Tet track in ages. "LA Trance" features a slow, scratchy, thumping beat along with several light, spacious sounds (chimes, birds, ambient drift) as well as simple yet imaginative synthesizer melodies courtesy of Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. Much of the rest of the album, aside from atmospheric interludes and the stirring downtempo cut "Daughter," consists of uptempo tracks, but even these are reflective enough to be more appropriate for home listening than club play (with the possible exception of "SW9 9SL," a slightly trancey epic with a galloping beat and a rolling garage bassline). "Lush" isnt an Orbital cover, but its lovely enough to be worthy of such an honor. "You Are Loved" features shuffling drum breaks and a delectable kalimba melody over spacy keyboards, gradually joined by jolts of squirmy, spark-like synths. Tracks like "Scientists" and "Planet" return to the ecstatic vocal manipulations prominent on 2010s There Is Love in You, but there appears to be more of a sense of spaciousness here. Hebdens instruments seem more intimately recorded and cleanly arranged than on his early, glitchier releases, but they manage to avoid sounding sterile or soulless. New Energy is one of the most accessible, listener-friendly releases in the Four Tet catalog, but it still maintains the creativity and unpredictability that have always made his work stand out.
