Fun Lovin’ Criminals | ||
Allmusic Biography : Much like G. Love & Special Sauce, the New York trio known as Fun Lovin Criminals hit the alternative airwaves with a blend of hip-hop beats, alternative style, and bluesy rhythms. The group was formed in 1993 by bassist Brian Leiser (Fast) and drummer Steve Borgovini, who had met in Syracuse while going to school; the pair formed a techno group but later moved back to New York City, where they hooked up with vocalist/guitarist Huey Morgan. FLC played around the area, and released their self-titled debut album in 1995 on the Silver Spotlight label. Signed to Capitol the following year, the group gained an alternative radio hit with the single "Scooby Snacks," from Come Find Yourself. In 1997, the band played stateside dates as U2s opening act on their Popmart tour. FLC returned 18 months later with 100% Colombian, their first for Virgin. "Love Unlimited" and "Korean Bodega" were red-hot hits across Europe and moderate favorites at college radio in the States, but FLC failed to gain critical acclaim in their native country. Trouble was brewing, for 1999 was a year of major changes for the Fun Lovin Criminals. Founding drummer Borgovini left the band in February and was replaced by ex-Bad Brains/Cro-Mags Mackie Jayson. The B-side collection Mimosa appeared, and the Loco LP, but FLC parted ways with EMI soon after. The label then issued the compilation Bag of Hits without their permission. FLC landed on Sanctuary for Welcome to Poppys, which appeared in September 2003, and they returned two years later with Livin in the City. Classic Fantastic followed in 2010. With Huey Morgan becoming a successful radio DJ for BBCs 6music in the U.K., the group would play select dates at festivals and clubs throughout their hiatus, but it wouldnt be until 2018 that the three-piece returned to the studio. After successful sessions, the group put together the follow-up to 1999s Mimosa album. Featuring reworkings of old songs, covers from the likes of Neil Diamond and Notorious B.I.G., as well as a newly recorded piece for the album, Another Mimosa was issued at the beginning of 2019.

Come Find Yourself : Allmusic album Review : The Fun Lovin Criminals debut release, Come Find Yourself, is both a catchy love letter to the trios New York City roots and a mid-90s rap-rock party album. Vocalist and guitarist Hugh Morgan, keyboardist and bassist Brian Leiser, and original drummer Steve Borgovini met at New York Citys famed Limelight nightclub in the early 90s and started as a stand-in for bands who failed to show up. From that point on, the Fun Lovin Criminals cultivated their hip-hop beats, bluesy rhythms, and pop culture-themed rhymes. Heavily dominating the lyrical content are references to gritty urban living, samples from Tarantino movies, and send-ups of organized crime, as exemplified on the track "King of New York," boasting the singsong chorus "La di da di, free John Gotti." Even though the band touches on dark themes, the music is energetic and funky enough to keep it from being too subversive. In the end, Come Find Yourself is a perfectly crafted summertime party album.

100% Colombian : Allmusic album Review : Fun Lovin Criminals got a lot of mileage out of their Scorsese-meets-Beasties-meets-Reservoir Dogs shtick on their first full-length album, Come Find Yourself. Their stoned, funky grooves brought them an MTV hit in America and, inexplicably, critical acclaim in the U.K., where their New York attitude came across as...well, not genuine, but at least an authentic parody from a knowing source. Eventually, the British acclaim eclipsed the moderate U.S. success, so it shouldnt be surprising that they tailored their follow-up, 100% Colombian, to the very things the British press loved -- the tongue-in-cheek humor, the cartoonish gangsterism, the dope, the funk- and rap-inflected grooves, the cheeky pop culture references. Its a little jazzier, a little slower, a little more cinematic than its predecessor, which means its more cohesive, as well as more sonically appealing. Of course, its possible that the average listener -- one who wasnt charmed or amused by Come Find Yourself and "Scooby Snacks" -- will never discover this, since Hueys self-satisfied rapping and smug lyrics can be exceptionally grating if youre not smirking along with him. But if his 70s mob movie fetishism and ironic celebration of da streets uv Noo Yawk seem humorous, chances are 100% Colombian will feel even better than Come Find Yourself. Everythings cool, everythings shmoove, put the money in the bag.

Mimosa : Allmusic album Review : Smooth New York jazz rappers Fun Lovin Criminals have quietly built their popularity stateside and particularly in Europe over the last six years by wrapping their tales of the Big Apples underbelly with sweet grooves and live instrumentation akin to Cake, the Roots, and Luscious Jackson. The smoothness of their grooves and underground culture has always been just a stones throw away from lounge-lizard heaven. With Mimosa, the band gives in to their Velveeta-smooth cheese urges and delivers a quirky collection of far-out covers and retoolings of their own songs. Its an interesting collection, and works best when they stick to their own material. Reworked originals like "Scooby Snacks" and the excellent "I Cant Get With That" have a great, easy, witty feel not terribly far from the original recordings. Some tracks, like "The Summer Wind," with the surprising guest Ian McCullough, showcase the bands strong live performances. Others are just plain whacked out, like the ultra-wimpy 70s weepers "Im Not In Love" and "Shining Star" (not the Earth, Wind & Fire song, another one). It seems like they might have taken a miscue from Cake, whose 1996 cover of "I Will Survive" is both hilarious but true to the spunk of the original. These covers lack the irony or campiness needed to make it interesting.

Loco : Allmusic album Review : The Fun Lovin Criminals inhabit a world of odd events. First poking the public eye with the Pulp Fiction-friendly "Scooby Snacks" and then watching as their unusual backwash of hip-hop blues, gangland loungecore, and ironic triple-entendre subsequently takes root in international soil only to have -- drat! -- Brixtons Alabama 3 get the Sopranos theme song was probably never part of the plan. This is, quite possibly, why Loco sounds continually exasperated with its own schtick. The FLC are leery and stupid on winking, vaguely sober growl-a-thons such as the Mighty Mighty Bosstones-indebted "Where the Bums Go" and resolutely self-pitying on "Half a Block," then bring it all back to the modus operandi of the albums offensive ad campaign with their hairy, sex-starved version of Eric B. & Rakims "Microphone Friend," but if the FLC would remember why this stuff works despite its own stoned limitations, it wouldve resulted in something of larger import than this minor lesson in creative fatigue.

Scooby Snacks: The Collection : Allmusic album Review : "Scooby Snacks" is a 2003 mid-line compilation from Disky, released just a year after the groups first official compilation, Bag of Hits. While that collection remains the superior overview, this is pretty good, weighing in at a generous 14 tracks (Bag of Hits was 15) and having a fairly representative cross-section of hits, including "Scooby Snacks" and "The Fun Lovin Criminals." Not everything of note is here -- inexplicably, "King of New York" has been left off along with a couple other notable singles and album tracks -- but its representative and, if found at a reasonable price, a good bargain for casual fans.

Welcome to Poppy’s : Allmusic album Review : Fun Lovin Criminals are the sound of cigarettes being lit. Ever since England embraced the New York band as its own, the Criminals have tailored their sound like you would a good suit -- tweaking the seams of the grooves for continued late-night appeal. Sly frontman Hueys bedroom voice slithers with a threatening tone; you cant trust this handsome criminal, but damn does he throw great parties. Similarly, most of Welcome to Poppys is like watching a 1968 Lincoln Continental drive by in slow motion -- nice and easy, and ultra cool. If this is all starting to sound like the treatment for Guy Ritchies next East End crime caper, then the Criminals have likely done their job. "Stray Bullet" sells the same street-level politics as Mobys "South Side," but sexes it up with the disco thump of Stereo MCs "Connected." "Lost it All" stylizes East Coast hardcore by marrying its gritty guitar aggression to more calculated whispering from Huey -- that this is successful at all proves the instrumental chops that stabilize FLCs affected veneer. They run confidently through 70s softcore love rock, sample Das EFX and Whodini, and cop the talking blues of Lou Reeds New York for "Steak Knife." Of course, crime doesnt always pay -- Welcome to Poppys is at least five songs too long. "This Sick World" is uncomfortably preachy after the hedonism of the albums first half, and when a couple of closing ballads try to prove again that every thug needs a lady, the results are more awkward than Saturday nights leather pants on a sunny Sunday morning. As with 1998s 100% Colombian, Fun Lovin Criminals are much more successful when theyre selling their citys excess and possibilities. Even if their product is partly parody, its attractive for squares. The atmospheric "Friday Night" might be the best example on Welcome to Poppys. Suggestively funky and slightly soulful, the track shimmers like neon in the fresh rain as Huey describes his typical night out. "We dont wait on the line, we dont pay for the drinks," he says. "Yall cant mess with us cause where you never been Im in."

A’s, B’s and Rarities : Allmusic album Review : As, Bs and Rarities didnt even get a U.S. release date, but the Brits eat up the Fun Lovin Criminals late-night shtick like a particularly tasty kabob, so theyll undoubtedly wash this three-disc survey down with numerous cans of lager. The comps ambitions are bigger than it really is -- it didnt need to be three discs, it repeats itself a little too much, and theres no liner content to speak of beyond recording information and graphics of FLC artwork. Still, longtime readers of the groups R-rated New York City love letters know the Criminals were always bigger than life inside their brains. And theyll love what is here, from the singles to the rarities to the previously unreleased. Yes, the Criminals weakness has always been follow-through; blowing their loot on sheen and finely cut suits, doing primo drugs and fronting through tinted windows, Huey and Steve rarely have enough duckets or energy to fill an entire album. That makes the first disc of As perfect, because its all about the singles, the high points, those nights you never forget. The "Fun Lovin Criminal" theme song, the hard flash groove of the mob fantasy "King of New York," "Korean Bodega"s Strangeloves rewrite, the Latin-inflected fine china glide of "Loco" -- these are songs dedicated to their element, and tapped into New York Citys third-rail pulse. Naturally, "Scooby Snacks" is here, too. There are two versions with the infamous Pulp Fiction samples, but better is the "20mg" version. Previously only available as an international B-side, it imagines the Criminals crime spree in cannabis slow motion, punctuated with guitar peels that echo like the squeals of the wheelmans tires. Other heretofore unavailable goodies include an instrumental of "Loco" and an early rock mix of "Fun Lovin Criminal." "I rob banks, I pull pranks, sometimes I eat/Franks and knishes, best wishes, Im vicious" -- the bands inside swingin while boring stuff like seriousness and innovation are stuck in line outside.

Classic Fantastic : Allmusic album Review : Its hard to believe that the frontman responsible for the expletive-laden debut Come Find Yourself, a heady mix of rap-rock party anthems and lyrics centering around recreational drug use and organized crime, would go on to become an honorary British national treasure. But 14 years after bursting onto the scene with the Tarantino-sampling "Scooby Snacks," Fun Lovin Criminals Huey Morgan has become an unlikely regular fixture in the U.K. media, fronting his own show on BBC 6Music, appearing in Wigan Casino movie Soul Boy, and bizarrely, hosting a TV program with Liza Tarbuck based on celebrities and their pets. Five years after 2005s Livin in the City, Morgan, Fast, and Frank, return -- following a series of bitter legal wrangles with their former manager -- with their sixth studio release, Classic Fantastic, self-described as "the first party album of the decade." But apart from a guest appearance from grime rapper Roots Manuva on the funk-laden "Keep On Yellin" and "Conversations with Our Attorney" a brief two-minute profanity-fueled skit featuring Dennis Pennis creator Paul Kaye, their newfound acceptance from their trans-Atlantic cousins hasnt really influenced its 13 tracks. Indeed, their first release through their own Kilohertz label continues to peddle their trademark, tongue in cheek, New York gangster persona: a source of derision in their homeland, but one which has been embraced by European audiences willing to share "The Sopranos-goes jazz-funk" joke on tracks like "We, The Three" (a combination of "Superstition"-esque squelchy electronic chords and retro-brass hooks) and "El Malo" (a chilled-out blend of sultry basslines, pan pipes, and Jimi Hendrix-style guitar solos). But besides their usual hazy stoner shtick, the trio also incorporate a wider array of influences to produce perhaps their most varied and eclectic record to date. "The Originals" fuses Limp Bizkit-style nu-metal beats and crunching rock riffs with whooping old-school hip-hop samples and a raucous singalong chorus, "Rewind" sees Morgan attempting his best Barry White impersonation against a backdrop of trippy prog rock atmospherics and twinkling R&B, and "Mars" is a robotic electro-funk number which recalls the body-popping grooves of Daft Punks last album. Best of all is the title track, which combines Arrested Development-ish guitar licks, 70s-inspired strings, and a carnival brass symphony to create an infectious sun-soaked classic. The likes of "How Low" and "Get Your Coat" are Fun Lovin Criminals by numbers, while "Jimi Choo" is a chaotic and misguided attempt at skittering drumnbass. But despite their messy behind-the-scenes troubles and the lack of a genuine hit in ten years, Morgan and co. have produced an album which could possibly show their detractors that theres more to them than their Goodfellas pastiche reputation.
