Allmusic Biography : Singer/guitarist Ian McNabb cannot erase the memory of "Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)" from the minds of music listeners. Released in 1984, "Birds Fly" was McNabbs highest-charting single with the Icicle Works in America. In fact, with the exception of minimal alternative radio airplay for "Understanding Jane" and "Evangeline," it provided the Icicle Works only U.S. exposure, tagging the band with a misleading one-hit wonder label. McNabb formed the Icicle Works in 1980 with Chris Layhe (bass) and Chris Sharrock (drums), releasing their eponymous debut LP in 1984. Gifted with a deep, rich voice, McNabb sang personal songs on the Icicle Works first album, like "Out of Season" and "In the Cauldron of Love," that rivaled the emotional wallop of "Birds Fly." McNabb recorded four more albums with the Icicle Works before starting a solo career. In 1995, McNabbs solo album Head Like a Rock was lauded by critics. Stripping away the Icicle Works new wave quirks, McNabb employed members ofNeil Youngs Crazy Horse to rip through a series of raw, guitar-heavy rock reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen. Loud and bluesy, Head Like a Rock finally established McNabb as a serious artist among critics. However, mainstream acceptance outside of "Birds Fly" still eluded him.

Truth and Beauty : Allmusic album Review : Ian McNabbs group The Icicle Works played second fiddle throughout the early and mid-80s to fellow atmospheric, post-punk popsters The Teardrop Explodes and Echo and the Bunnymen. With Truth And Beauty, McNabb earns a place at the front of the orchestra. McNabbs cozy-fireplace vocals are finally layered right up front in the mix where they belong. The epic, 7-minute title track moves through tempos and emotions with raw, gorgeous yearning. Unfortunately, the spartan production relies on drum "programming."

Head Like a Rock : Allmusic album Review : Icicle Works fans, be forewarned: Ian McNabbs solo album, Head Like a Rock, barely resembles the anthemic new wave pop of his former band. Indie purists may scoff, but Head Like a Rock is a heartfelt, invigorating rock album. Collaborating with members of Neil Youngs Crazy Horse, McNabb sounds rejuvenated. On "Fire Inside My Soul," McNabb cuts loose both musically and emotionally. While his passionate, robust vocals ride atop screeching guitars, McNabb sings autobiographical lyrics about leaving the past behind, including the death of his father. Clocking in at over eight minutes, the song sets the tone for the LP; it is uplifting, energetic music. The ferocious rhythm section of Crazy Horse blends smoothly with McNabbs deep, booming voice. The crunchy guitar riffs in "Fire Inside My Soul" and "You Must Be Prepared to Dream" may turn off Icicle Works devotees, however, the hooks are sharp enough to slice away any hesitancy. McNabb and his cohorts slow the tempo on "Child Inside a Father" and "Still Got the Fever," but the feelings of restlessness still linger. On Head Like a Rock, McNabb takes inventory of his life and discovers that, despite a few setbacks, everything is fine. Its a realization that bursts like firecrackers.

Merseybeast : Allmusic album Review : Merseybeast (an album title to savor from the Liverpool native) marks McNabbs third solo collection of refreshing, heart-on-sleeve, no-hidden-agendas pop/rock. He communicates such an open, wide-eyed innocence through his work that its difficult at first to believe he can be for real. But McNabbs willingness to express, from a male perspective, emotions uncommon for conventional rocks posturing swagger soon makes you a convert. When, for instance, was the last time a guy convincingly sang about "Camaraderie" in a way that could (at least, until the very end) apply in an equally touching way to a male or female respondent? The tone of McNabbs cosy-fireplace vocals -- especially on ballads like "Too Close to the Sun" -- sometimes evoke legendary crooner Scott Walker, likely through such second-hand bridges as David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, or perhaps fellow-Liverpudlian Julian Copes (the Teardrop Explodes) influential 1981 Walker compilation The Godlike Genius Of.... At the same time, parts of Merseybeast (notably "Heydays" and "They Settled for Less than They Wanted") make me think of some lost Mick Ronson album. On his own sporadic solo releases, the late Spiders from Mars guitarist shared McNabbs talent for making an ingratiating, "golly-gee" naivete work to his advantage. (Speaking of "They Settled," I can also hear former Call vocalist Michael Been tackling this dense, lugubrious anthem of disappointment and missed opportunity, one of the rare downers on the disc.) "Dont Put Your Spell on Me" harkens back to Liverpools postpunk salad days, a track that would have been envied in the early 80s by both Echo & the Bunnymen and the Teardrop Explodes.

A Party Political Broadcast on Behalf of the Emotional Party : Allmusic album Review : If Head Like a Rock was Ian McNabbs homage to Neil Young & Crazy Horse, heres his tribute to the sound of Young without the Horse. Not quite an "Unplugged" album (there are electric guitars on several tracks), at its best the drummerless A Party Political Broadcast on Behalf of the Emotional Party still has the laid-back, intimate charm of an all-acoustic Young recording like, say, Harvest Moon. Unfortunately, some of the material on Party Political would be better suited to a full-bore rock treatment -- witness the difference between the somewhat lethargic, under-arranged version of "Liverpool Girl" offered up here versus the stomping, anthemic take McNabb released a few years later on his self-titled release of 2001. However, on the majority of Party Politicals tracks, the songs do match up with their stripped-down arrangements; this is especially true of the albums many ballads, as well as the spacy, slightly funky "Little Princess" and the funny and well-observed opening track, "Sex With Someone You Love" (and yes, that song title is a Woody Allen reference). While not quite at the level of the Icicle Works debut album or his previous solo outing, Merseybeast, Party Political ends up being a solid, if uncharacteristically mellow, addition to McNabbs fine catalog of work.

Live at Life : Allmusic album Review : Ian McNabbs Live at Life is a pretty barebones affair -- just McNabb and his guitar recorded live at Liverpools Life Café over two nights in December of 1999. It was originally released as a fan-club-only item in 2000 before being picked up for general release by Sanctuary/Castle a year later. However, Live at Lifes origins as a fan-club item are still very evident in the track selection; certainly, many longtime fans would be pleased by McNabbs decision to forgo playing his best-known, most commercially successful songs, instead electing to troll through his and the Icicle Works back catalog to offer up a selection of relative obscurities and underappreciated gems from virtually every stage of his career (going all the way back to the Icicle Works first album for "Reaping the Rich Harvest"). Live at Life also bears the stamp of "fan club release" for a couple of other reasons: the already-converted fan base will be fine with the somewhat monochromatic tone of the album (always a danger with lengthy solo acoustic recordings) and the energy-draining decision to almost completely mix out the crowd reaction and applause will actually be preferred by McNabb acolytes who wanted to savor every note of his performance with a minimum of distractions. So as a fan-club release, Live at Life is a well-thought-out, well-produced niche product. However, for casual fans (or for people looking for their first introduction to Ian McNabb), Live at Life -- featuring no hits and lacking the raw energy one normally associates with a live release -- is probably the least-essential item in McNabbs catalog. Which is not to say that Live at Life is a bad album -- just a curious one to put into general release.

Ian McNabb : Allmusic album Review : After a five-year hiatus from the guitar/bass/drums rock trio recordings that were his sonic signature, Ian McNabb finally turned up the amps again for this self-titled release. The result was an album that recalled "Understanding Jane"-era Icicle Works (as well as Merseybeast-era McNabb) in its unabashed love of adrenalized roots pop. Of course, Neil Young in Crazy Horse mode is still the most obvious reference point on Ian McNabb (as it is on almost all of McNabbs solo work), but McNabb has always liked to add a large number of ingredients to his musical gumbo (the Icicle Works Blind) and the trend continues here, with McNabb cheerfully borrowing elements from everyone from the Who to Boston to Nick Lowe to that eternal McNabb inspiration, Burt Bacharach. (Okay, so maybe the Bacharach influence is only clear on the intro to "(If We Believe) What Love Can Do," but still.) Two caveats: the actual songwriting on Ian McNabb is a little uneven, as McNabbs tendency to wear his heart on his sleeve leads to some clumsy, awkward moments on tracks like the aforementioned "What Love Can Do" and "Hollywood Tears." Also, McNabbs (perhaps financially necessary) decision to self-produce ends up giving this record a slightly less-expansive sound than his previous co-productions with the likes of Bruce Lampcov and John Porter. But on most of this albums tracks (particularly the rocking, funny, should-have-been-a-hit "Liverpool Girl" and the darker, more ominous "Friend of My Enemy"), everything comes together nicely, allowing McNabb to demonstrate that while he may have put the electric guitar away for a while, he hadnt forgotten how best to use it when he took it out again.

The Gentleman Adventurer : Allmusic album Review : Sporting a comfortable, low-key vibe, Ian McNabbs sixth studio album still manages to burn with all of his usual passion -- except this time McNabbs out to show off his sensitive singer/songwriter side as well as his more celebrated folk-rock persona of yore. To that end, The Gentleman Adventurer mixes in several nakedly emotive, keyboard-based ballads like "An Honest Mistake" and "The Human Heart and How it Works" alongside the expected (and winning) anthemic guitar-based numbers like "All Things to Everyone." To help give listeners an even greater sense of McNabbs full range, this largely acoustic release also detours into Beach Boys-influenced pop ("Gulf Coast Rockin"), and even finds room for a handful of flat-out rock tunes, ranging from the deceptively upbeat "Aint No Way to Behave" to the brooding, doom-laden "Hurricane Elaine." Regrettably, however, The Gentleman Adventurers obvious drum programming is a bit of a bummer, as it gives several tracks more of a demo-like quality than perhaps was intended. As well, theres also at least one (blessedly brief) McNabb misfire on this album: The petty "Pampered Pop Star Millionaire Miserablist Blues" is a ham-fisted diatribe that makes McNabb sound every bit as whiny and self-absorbed as the pop stars hes trying to parody. Still, overall, McNabb fans will not be disappointed in The Gentleman Adventurer, and once folk-rock fans new to his work get past the drum programming, theyll find that most of the songwriting and performances on this album are refreshingly honest and heartfelt, and surprisingly hook-laden to boot.
