| Allmusic Biography : Jackie Wilson was one of the most important agents of black pops transition from R&B; into soul. In terms of vocal power (especially in the upper register), few could outdo him; he was also an electrifying on-stage showman. He was a consistent hitmaker from the mid-50s through the early 70s, although never a crossover superstar. His reputation isnt quite on par with Ray Charles, James Brown, or Sam Cooke, however, because his records did not always reflect his artistic genius. Indeed, there is a consensus of sorts among critics that Wilson was something of an underachiever in the studio, due to the sometimes inappropriately pop-based material and arrangements that he used. Wilson was well-known on the R&B; scene before he went solo in the late 50s. In 1953 he replaced Clyde McPhatter in Billy Ward & the Dominoes, one of the top R&B; vocal groups of the 50s. Although McPhatter was himself a big star, Wilson was as good as or better than the man whose shoes he filled. Commercially, however, things took a downturn for the Dominoes in the Wilson years, although they did manage a Top 20 hit with "St. Therese of the Roses" in 1956. Elvis Presley was one of those who was mightily impressed by Wilson in the mid-50s; he can be heard praising Jackies on-stage cover of "Dont Be Cruel" in between-song banter during the Million Dollar Quartet session in late 1956. Wilson would score his first big R&B; (and small pop) hit in late 1956 with the brassy, stuttering "Reet Petite," which was co-written by an emerging Detroit songwriter named Berry Gordy Jr. Gordy would also help write a few other hits for Jackie in the late 50s, "To Be Loved," "Lonely Teardrops," "Thats Why (I Love You So)," and "Ill Be Satisfied"; they also crossed over to the pop charts, "Lonely Teardrops" making the Top Ten. Most of these were upbeat, creatively arranged marriages of pop and R&B; that, in retrospect, helped set the stage both for 60s soul and for Gordys own huge pop success at Motown. The early Gordy-Wilson association has led some historians to speculate how much differently (and better) Jackies career might have turned out had he been on Motowns roster instead of the Brunswick label. In the early 60s, Wilson maintained his pop stardom with regular hit singles that often used horn arrangements and female choruses that have dated somewhat badly, especially in comparison with the more creative work by peers such as Charles and Brown from this era. Wilson also sometimes went into out-and-out operatic pop, as on "Danny Boy" and one of his biggest hits, "Night" (1960). At the same time, he remained capable of unleashing a sweaty, up-tempo, gospel-soaked number: "Baby Workout," which fit that description to a T, was a number five hit for him in 1963. Its true that you have to be pretty selective in targeting the worthwhile Wilson records from this era; 1962s At the Copa, for instance, has Jackie trying to combine soul and all-around entertainment, and not wholly succeeding with either strategy. Yet some of his early Brunswick material is also fine uptown soul; not quite as earthy as some of his fans would have liked him to sound, no doubt, but worth hearing. Wilson was shot and seriously wounded by a female fan in 1961, though he made a recovery. His career was more seriously endangered by his inability to keep up with changing soul and rock trends. Not everything he did in the mid-60s is totally dismissible; "No Pity (In the Naked City)," for instance, is something like West Side Story done uptown soul style. In 1966, his career was briefly revived when he teamed up with Chicago soul producer Carl Davis, who had been instrumental in the success of Windy City performers like Gene Chandler, Major Lance, and Jerry Butler. Davis successfully updated Wilsons sound with horn-heavy arrangements, getting near the Top Ten with "Whispers," and then making number six in 1967 with "Higher and Higher." And that was really the close of Wilsons career as either a significant artist or commercial force, although he had some minor chart entries through the early 70s. While playing a Dick Clark oldies show at the Latin Casino in New Jersey in September 1975, Wilson suffered an on-stage heart attack while singing "Lonely Teardrops." He lapsed into a coma, suffering major brain damage, and was hospitalized until his death in early 1984. | ||

| He's So Fine : Allmusic album Review : In 1957, Jackie Wilson left the Dominoes and released this debut album on Brunswick Records a year later. The new songwriting team of Berry Gordy, Jr. & Tyran Carlo (aka Billy Davis) wrote six of the 12 songs. Backed by a big band, Wilson belts out "Reet Petite" like its an Olympic event, displaying his irresistible vocal gymnastics; "Etcetera" treads the same path, but lacks the dynamics. "To Be Loved" and "Danny Boy," the old standard, are heartfelt, stately ballads. Wilson wrote "Come Back to Me," a rather bland jump tune. An overblown big-band sound mars all but the most crafted creations, and theres no denying Wilsons fantastic takes, but the Brunswick sound may be a bit too full for die-hard soul lovers. | ||

| Lonely Teardrops : Allmusic album Review : Jackie Wilsons big beautiful voice outshines Dick Jacobs bombastic big band sound on his second solo album. His voice-of-plenty makes two hopelessly MOR tunes ("Hush-A-Bye" and "By the Light of the Silvery Moon") tolerable, and contributes two compositions himself ("You Better Know It" and "Singing a Song"). Berry Gordy and Billy Davis, with help from Gwendolyn Gordy-Fuqua, contribute the most commercial songs, including the hit "Thats Why I Love You So," "Each Time I Love You More," and "We Have Love." This marked the final time Gordy and Davis worked with Wilson; the hitmaking combo split because Gordy objected to Brunswicks dogmatic refusal to put their songs on the flip side of their hit A-sides. (He resented other writers songs riding the coattails of their hits and cutting their mechanical income in half; he also wanted a share of the publishing. | Soul Galore : Allmusic album Review : A connoisseurs package of 24 Jackie Wilson sides, and an indispensable treat, because other than the obvious hit, "Whispers (Getting Louder)," the rest were chosen with no regard to chart action or popularity, though many did chart R&B.; Some of these will be new to you if you didnt purchase any of the albums Brunswick Records flung on the market by Wilson. Check his version of the Holland, Dozier, Hollands hit on the Supremes, "You Keep Me Hanging On." If Brunswick hadnt held Wilson under contract you would have got a taste of the artist cutting HDH tunes at Motown, but Wilsons management never let it happened, for Wilson signing with Brunswick was akin to joining a gang -- blood in, blood out. His version of "Love Uprising" -- also recorded by Otis Leavil and the Chi-lites -- is the best, ditto for "You Got Me Walking," also done (unreleased when recorded) by Cicero Blake, and a rip snortin rendition of Darrell Banks "Open the Door to Your Heart." | ||

| You Got Me Walking : Allmusic album Review : Produced by Chicago soul producer Carl Davis, You Got Me Walking was one of Jackie Wilsons best albums. As usual with Davis/Wilson collaborations, Motowns studio band the Funk Brothers were on hand to lay down their tight grooves. Written by the Chi-Lites Eugene Record, the funky, loping single "You Got Me Walking" strutted up to number 22 R&B; on Billboards charts in early 1972. An earlier single, the tender "Love Is Funny That Way," charted in late 1971. Wilsons gospel roots are on full display on Records rollicking, honking "The Fountain." Other standouts are the majestic "Forever and a Day," the swinging, brassy "Hard to Get a Thing Called Love," and the charting single "The Girl Turned Me On." | ||

| Beautiful Day : Allmusic album Review : Produced by Chicago soul stalwarts Carl Davis and arranger Sonny Sanders with musical direction by Willie Henderson, Beautiful Day is Jackie Wilsons last commercially viable album and finds the phenomenal singer in fine form. Songwriter/producer Jeffree Perry (known for the steppers classic "Loves Gonna Last") co-wrote all of the songs. The standouts are the inspiring title track, the peppy "Pretty Little Angel Eyes," and the sensitive renderings Wilson gives on "Go Away," "I Get Lonely Sometimes," and the splendid "This Love Is Mine." What makes this track even more endearing is that you can hear the last part of a count-off (as in "1-2-3, go!") just before the music begins. Despite the LPs rich consistency, the only single to chart was the effervescent "Because of You," which just missed the R&B; Top 40 in spring 1973. | ||

| Mr. Excitement! : Allmusic album Review : A three-CD box from the experts of reissue at Rhino, Mr. Excitement takes Wilsons career from his first sides with Billy Ward & the Dominoes in 1956 through his final recordings in the early 70s. The former Detroit boxer hit either the R&B; or pop chart over 50 times, making him one of the most successful R&B; artists ever, in chart terms at least. Every one of those recordings is contained in this set, including such classics as "Reet Petite," "Lonely Teardrops," and "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher." Wilson had an explosive falsetto and a downright weird sense of phrasing that made him utterly unique. Some of his productions were a little overwrought but even in the most extreme cases, that voice was a gift from God. Seminal. | ||

| Higher and Higher : Allmusic album Review : Driven by Jackie Wilsons biggest latter-day hit, "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher," this 1967 LP offers great performances (from vocalist and band) and a variety of material. Though original LPs surely arent the best place to start for Wilson, fans of the nearly irresistible Brunswick sound will find much here to like, from the propulsive "You Can Count on Me" and "Open the Door to Your Heart" to the classy Impressions-style "When Will Our Day Come" and the ballad "Those Heartaches." Wilsons performances are excellent as usual, making Higher and Higher one of the better original albums of his career. | ||
