Jane Weaver | ||
Allmusic Biography : A multifaceted musical presence, English singer, songwriter, guitarist, serial collaborator, and record label head Jane Weaver has performed both solo and with the groups Kill Laura (Brit-pop) and Misty Dixon (retro-kissed indie pop). Weaver released five singles (two via Polydor) with Kill Laura between 1993 and 1996 before embarking on a solo career, issuing her debut EP, Like an Aspen Leaf, in 2001. She formed Misty Dixon the following year (the same year she founded her own Bird Records, an imprint of Finders Keepers) and released Iced to Mode in 2003. Her sophomore outing, Seven Day Smile, arrived in 2006, followed by Cherlokalate in 2007, The Fallen by Watchbird in 2010, and the Krautrock-infused The Silver Globe in 2014. In 2015 Weaver issued a deluxe reissue of the critically acclaimed The Silver Globe, which included a complete second album titled The Amber Light. Later that same year, she released a one-sided private-press album called Neotantrik Globes, which featured Suzanne Ciani, Sean Canty, and Andy Votel deconstructing and reassembling songs from The Silver Globe. Her next album, 2017s Modern Kosmology, continued to explore synthesizers and dream pop, and featured an appearance by Cans Malcolm Mooney. A 7" single, "The Lightning Back," was released by Fire Records in 2018.

The Silver Globe : Allmusic album Review : Liverpool-born, Manchester-based indie folk artist Jane Weaver made an early recorded appearance as a solo artist on a 1998 split single alongside a pre-fame Doves and a pre-Finders Keepers Andy Votel. The two became a couple, and while Doves star went on to shine the brightest commercially, Weavers made a steady ascent. She released her debut full-length, Seven Day Smile, in 2006 on Bird Records, a Finders Keepers imprint co-run by the couple. While that record and its follow-up, Cherlokalate, represented tentative steps into psych folk, 2010s acclaimed Fallen by Watchbird furthered her interest in the mystical and the magical. Named in reference to Andrzej Żuławskis 1988 film On the Silver Globe, this offering finds Weaver playing to her strengths. On "Argent" she blends a hypnotic and repetitive Krautrock-inspired groove with otherworldly, pulsing synths -- displaying her obsession with the early electronic pioneer Suzanne Ciani and an affinity with the Ghost Box stable -- and provides multi-tracked vocals which nod to Laetitia Sadiers work with Stereolab. Elsewhere, the cavernous, rich vocal effects on "Arrows" alone are enough to get lost in, but add to the mix a steady, metronomic rhythm and a Twin Peaks-esque two-note bass motif and it has a timeless feel, even on repeated listens. The vinyl version of The Silver Globe hides "Arrows" away as the penultimate track; thankfully, however, the other formats place this highlight in an earlier position, directly after the Hawkwind-sampling "The Electric Mountain." Theres other material here that could feel overly twee in the hands of her contemporaries -- hear the cartoon disco of "Dont Take My Soul," for example -- but its Weavers assured tone which ensures that this isnt the case. Her main achievement here is the fact that she effortlessly distills aspects of both the early electronic/library music/hauntology craze, and her psych folk grounding, into one highly accessible album. This is no mean feat -- while these genres can prove to be notoriously esoteric and abstract, there are inventive moments here which wouldnt sound out of place on mainstream alternative radio. "If Only We Could Be in Love" will undoubtedly interest fans of Goldfrapp, and "Mission Desire" is the albums true earworm, but the gentle folk of "Stealing Gold" is filled with enough of Weavers idiosyncrasies to entice anybody into her world. For listeners new to her music, The Silver Globe is as good a starting point as any, not only to her own rich canon, but also to the weird and wonderful niche genres that have inspired her.

Modern Kosmology : Allmusic album Review : On her 2014 album, The Silver Globe, Jane Weaver took a step away from the gentle psych-folk she had been making into something more German and droning. Abetted by a wide array of synthesizers, she wrapped her dreamlike songs in cushy waves of sound for a large part of the album. On 2017s Modern Kosmology, Weaver dives headlong into dream pop thats filtered through vintage synthesizers, motorik beats, and jangling guitars. Playing most of the instruments herself, with help from the occasional drummer or guitarist, she creates a world of sound that envelops the listener in much the same way that the tendrils of synths wrap around her rich, woody vocals. From the opening notes of the album, she weaves a sonic spell that doesnt break, or even bend. The tempos may change, the mood may shift a bit here and there, the arrangement may go from dense to sparse, but through it all Weaver conducts the sound like a magician in full command of her powers. There are hints of Stereolab and Broadcast, echoes of Can and Harmonia, shades of Spectrum, and nods to synth pioneers like Suzanne Ciani, but when the album is done, it mainly feels like a pure manifestation of Weavers vision. Songs like "Did You See Butterflies?" and "Loops in the Secret Society" certainly owe a great debt to artists of the past, but the way Weaver puts together the pieces is fresh and entrancing. The record really takes off when she breaks out of the mood established on those aforementioned tracks and adds unexpected elements, like the heavy post-rock drums on the pulsating "The Architect" and the sawing violins and stentorian vocals of guest Malcolm Mooney of Can on the utterly hypnotic "Ravenspoint." Not only do these tracks serve to add an extra bit of dynamic tension to the album, they also point to more exploratory avenues Weaver could attempt in the future now that shes mastered synth-heavy dream pop. The Silver Globe was Weavers coming-out party; Modern Kosmology serves notice that shes here to stay.
