Jimmy Page
Allmusic Biography : Unquestionably one of the all-time most influential, important, and versatile guitarists and songwriters in rock history is Jimmy Page. Just about every rock guitarist from the late 60s/early 70s to the present day has been influenced by Pages work with Led Zeppelin -- his monolithic riffs served as a blueprint for what would eventually become heavy metal, yet he refused to be pigeonholed to any single musical style (touching upon folk, country, funk, blues, and other genres). Page also lent a hand in writing (or co-writing) Zeppelins vast array of classic songs and produced all their albums. Born on January 9, 1944, in Heston, Middlesex, England, Page picked up the guitar at age 13 after being inspired by the Elvis Presley tune "Baby Lets Play House," and while he took several lessons, was mostly self-taught. Instead of attending college right after high school, Page decided to join his first real rock band, Neil Christian & the Crusaders, whom he toured England with. But Page fell seriously ill (with glandular fever) and was forced to quit and recuperate. Dejected, Page pondered giving up music and focusing on another interest, painting, as he enrolled at an art college in Sutton, Surrey.

With the emergence of such bands as the Rolling Stones in the early 60s and their gritty blues-rock, Pages interest in music perked up once again -- but instead of forming a band right away, he decided to hone his craft by becoming one of Englands top session guitarists and producers. Although the exact specifics of which sessions he was involved with have become hazy over time, its confirmed that he worked with many of the days top acts, including the Who, Them, Donovan, the Kinks, and the Rolling Stones, among others. By 1966, Page was looking to put his session work on hold and join a full-time band; he accepted an offer to play with the Yardbirds (initially as a bassist, then shortly thereafter as a guitarist), as he was paired up with another one of rocks all-time guitar greats, Jeff Beck. Although the Yardbirds began as a straight-ahead blues-rock band, with the inclusion of Page in the lineup, the group began experimenting with psychedelic and hard rock styles.

Despite it being obvious that the Yardbirds were on the downside of their career (Beck left shortly after Page came onboard), Page appeared on the album Little Games and several tours before the band finally called it a day in 1968. With a string of tour dates still set up throughout Europe, Page decided to go through with the shows and put together a new band that was dubbed the New Yardbirds -- including longtime session bassist John Paul Jones, plus newcomers Robert Plant on vocals and John Bonham on drums. After the completion of their initial tour, the band changed its name to Led Zeppelin and explored the still largely uncharted territory of hard rock/heavy metal. The band immediately became one of rocks most successful and enduring bands, issuing a string of classic albums from 1969 through 1975 -- Led Zeppelin I, Led Zeppelin II, Led Zeppelin III, Led Zeppelin IV, Houses of the Holy, and Physical Graffiti -- which spawned such classic rock radio standards as "Dazed and Confused," "Whole Lotta Love," "Immigrant Song," "Black Dog," "Stairway to Heaven," and "Kashmir," as the band also became a must-see live act in the process. Page also found the time to work with folk artist Roy Harper (most notably his 1971 release, Stormcock, under the alias S. Flavius Mercurius). Zeppelin was arguably the biggest rock band in the world by the mid-70s (their influence on other rock bands following in their wake cannot be stressed enough) as they launched their own record company, Swan Song, but it was around this time that Page began dabbling with heroin and other substances, eventually leading to him becoming a full-blown addict by the late 70s/early 80s (as a result, his playing began to suffer). Also, Pages interest in the occult became a concern to those around him (he went as far as purchasing a mansion on the Loch Ness in Scotland that was once owned by renowned Satanist Aleister Crowley).

Zeppelin continued issuing albums until the dawn of the 80s (1976s concert movie/soundtrack The Song Remains the Same and Presence, 1979s In Through the Out Door), but tragedy ultimately derailed the quartet -- the death of Plants young son in 1977 and Bonhams alcohol-related death in 1980. After Led Zeppelin decided to call it quits in late 1980, Page disappeared from sight (it became known later on that he hardly touched his instrument for a long time afterward). It wasnt until 1982 that Page began to emerge from his self-imposed exile, as he composed and played on the motion picture soundtrack to Death Wish III, compiled the Zeppelin outtakes collection Coda, and took part in the 1983 star-studded A.R.M.S. tour, which saw Page unite with Beck and Eric Clapton for a series of shows that raised money for multiple sclerosis research. In 1984, Page guested alongside Plant, Beck, and Nile Rodgers on the hit EP of rock & roll oldies The Honeydrippers, and formed his first band since the demise of Zeppelin, dubbed the Firm. The group featured former Free/Bad Company vocalist Paul Rodgers, and despite the fact that their self-titled debut was a sizable hit, the band decided to call it a day shortly after the release of its lukewarm-received sophomore effort, Mean Business.

Led Zeppelin fans were given a rare treat when Zeppelins surviving three members reunited (with drummers Tony Thompson and Phil Collins) for the mammoth Live Aid at Philadelphias JFK Stadium in July 1985 -- unfortunately handing in an incredibly under-rehearsed, sloppy performance. Zeppelin reunited again in 1988 for the Atlantic Records 25th anniversary concert at New Yorks Madison Square Garden (this time Bonhams son, Jason, filled in for his late father behind the kit), and yet again performed another mistake-filled mini set. The same year Page guested on Plants solo release Now & Zen, as well as issuing his first ever solo recording, Outrider, following it up with a tour that touched upon tracks from all eras of his career. By the early 90s, further rumors of an impending Zeppelin reunion continued to circulate, and after Plant declined an invitation from Page to join forces once again, Page decided to collaborate with former Deep Purple/Whitesnake vocalist David Coverdale, whose vocal style was often compared to Plants over the years. Pages latest project only lasted a single album, 1993s heavily Zep-like Coverdale/Page, as a proposed world tour was scrapped in favor of just a few select dates in Japan.

In 1994, Plant and Page finally agreed to collaborate once again (although Jones wasnt invited this time), leading to the release of the acoustic set No Quarter the same year, plus a highly popular MTV Unplugged special and sold-out world tour. A year later, Led Zeppelin were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, this being the second time a Page-related band got the nod from the Hall (in 1992, the Yardbirds were honored). The year 1998 saw Plant and Page issue an album of all-new material, Walking into Clarksdale, which was surprisingly not well received by the public, sinking from sight shortly after its release. The duo went their separate ways by the late 90s, as Page joined the Black Crowes for a tour and live album (2000s Live at the Greek). The same year as the albums release, another Crowes/Page tour was cut short due to a back injury Page suffered. But in June of 2001, Page took to the concert stage alongside Plant to celebrate the 60th birthday of Roy Harper.

In 2005 Page was appointed Office of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of his charity work, and the following year he was inducted, along with the rest of Led Zeppelin, into the U.K. Music Hall of Fame. A one-off charity concert with all of the surviving Led Zeppelin members, with Jason Bonham on drums, occurred in 2007 at the O2 Arena in London, and in 2008 Page appeared in and co-produced the guitar documentary It Might Get Loud, which focused on the careers and playing styles of Page, Jack White, and U2s the Edge. In 2012 Page, Plant, and Jones received the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors from President Barack Obama in a White House ceremony amidst rumors circulating about a possible Led Zeppelin reunion in anticipation of the forthcoming deluxe reissues of the bands first three studio albums. By 2014 those rumors had mostly abated, and Page announced that he was going to put together a band and tour as a solo act for the first time since 1988.

Death Wish II : Allmusic album Review : Though the soundtrack for Death Wish 2 may not sound like an interesting record on the surface, it is actually a significant release for any number of reasons. For one thing, it was the first album that Jimmy Page recorded and released after the breakup of Led Zeppelin, and the album serves as a fascinating transition from Zeppelins final studio release, In Through the out Door, to the work Page would do with his ill-fated supergroup the Firm. In addition to containing Pages work with a full orchestra, there are several pieces that showcase his well-established ability to create eerie, unnerving guitar and synthesizer lines, mainly to serve as accompaniment to the film. Page also delivers three fully composed rock songs, "Whos to Blame," "Hypnotizing Ways," and "City Sirens." The songs are appropriately creepy and foreboding, and his playing is just as impressive as it was in the Zeppelin era, but they also showcase the one weakness of the album, which is that Page has chosen fairly uninspired collaborators here. Drummer Dave Mattacks and bassist Dave Paton are competent enough, but neither one threatens to overshadow or even push Page (as John Paul Jones and John Bonham would have), and he turns in sometimes lackluster performances because of it. The real clincher, though, is singer Chris Farlowe, who delivers what has to be the most embarrassing ham-fisted blues singing ever heard on record, and his deep-voiced histrionics destroy whatever mood Page hoped to create with the music. (Thankfully, he ruins only two songs.) Still, though this is hardly the place for Page neophytes to begin, listeners interested in discovering a new, interesting side of him should seek this out.

Jimmy's Back Pages... The Early Years : Allmusic album Review : Before joining the Yardbirds, Jimmy Page was Britains premier session guitarist, guesting on innumerable dates from the Who and the Kinks on down to total unknowns. This 22-track compilation includes some of his more notable uncredited solos, when Page was the man to give a song or a session an extra lift with his licks. As you might expect, the quality is variable, encompassing charming but wimpy Merseybeat, energetic but generic covers of 50s rock classics, and sub-Stones R&B.; There are some great moments here, though. The Primitives sides are respectable raw British R&B;, and Les Fleur de Lys are like a poppier Who. Page really lets rip on his solo for the First Gears "Leave My Kitten Alone"; its probably the best one he recorded prior to joining the Yardbirds. This also includes the rare single cut by Nico in Britain in 1965 before joining the Velvet Underground, which has a folkish sound in the vein of Marianne Faithfull; the A-side is a cover of Gordon Lightfoots "Im Not Saying," of all things, and the B-side is a somber acoustic ballad co-written by Page himself. The set ends with its one smash hit, Donovans "Sunshine Superman."

Coverdale • Page : Allmusic album Review : Everything about Coverdale/Page, right down to the goofy copping of the Presence artwork, is an attempt to recapture the pompous majesty of Led Zeppelin. It doesnt succeed, of course, but it does leave all of the Zep clones in the dust. Although Jimmy Page plays better here than he has since 1979s In Through the Out Door, there is a conspicuous lack of solos. If youve never liked David Coverdale, his performance will not change your opinion. Both fare better on the rockers; the power ballads tend be slightly tedious. Essentially, Coverdale/Page boils down to a guilty pleasure at its best moments ("Shake My Tree," "Pride and Joy," "Absolution Blues"), but never quite rivals the bold experimentation of Led Zeppelin.

Hip Young Guitar Slinger : Allmusic album Review : Hip Young Guitar Slinger and "His Heavy Friends" focuses on Jimmy Pages work as a session guitarist for the Immediate and Pye labels in the 60s. The first disc includes the poppier end of his work behind Gregory Phillips, the Kinks and Nico, while the second disc finds him in more familiar territory backing English blues masters like Eric Clapton, John Mayall and Jeff Beck. Fans of Led Zeppelin wont find any lost gems here, but this collection does shine a light on Pages successful pre-Zep music career. [Castle issued a remastered edition in 2007.]

Live at the Greek : Allmusic album Review : The Black Crowes were dogged with comparisons to the Rolling Stones and the Faces throughout the first decade of their career, so it came as a mild surprise that they teamed with Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page in late 1999 for a couple of concerts. Zeppelin had a mystique and majesty about them that the Crowes never attempted to emulate. They were an earthy, bluesy rock band and while they found a number of different ways to rework their influences, they never tried the stately grandeur that was Zeppelins second nature. So, some observers were curious to see how these two approaches worked. Well, it worked very, very well indeed. It shouldnt have come as a surprise that it was a good, comfortable fit since Page always demonstrated a true love of blues and early rock & roll, even on Led Zeps heaviest moments. What may be a surprise, at least to listeners that always dismissed the Black Crowes as revivalist hacks, is how supple and muscular the band sounds on Live at the Greek and how powerful vocalist Chris Robinson is. The double-disc album, released originally only through the internet but then through retail on TVT, essentially replicates an entire concert from Page and the Crowes, one of the first before they set out on a full-length American tour in the summer of 2000. They stick to Led Zeppelin classics and old blues and R&B; standards like "Woke up This Morning," "Sloppy Drunk," "Mellow Down Easy," and "Shake Your Money Maker," plus the Yardbirds "Shape of Things to Come" and Fleetwood Macs "Oh Well." No Crowes songs are here due to contractual reasons - the band left American/Columbia in 1999, and they were not allowed to recut any song they released on the label in the years immediately following their departure; but in a way, that only strengthens the album. By pounding out hard-driving blues-rock and classic Zeppelin tunes, the band is able to stretch out and reveal just what a capable, versatile band they are. The true sign of their abilities is that Page sounds looser and happier here than he has in years; he sounds like hes truly enjoying himself, a quality that is debatable on the Page & Plant records, no matter what their virtues are. Live at the Greek isnt a landmark release, and only hardcore Page, Black Crowes, and Zeppelin fans are likely to want this, no matter how vibrant and lucent these faithful interpretations are. But for those fans, theyll be quite pleased with how good, how strong Live at the Greek is.

The Jimmy Page Collection: Have Guitar, Will Travel : Allmusic album Review : Fuel 2000s 2003 collection The Jimmy Page Collection: Have Guitar Will Travel covers somewhat familiar territory, namely the years prior to Led Zeppelin when Jimmy Page was a roving guitar slinger playing on numerous sessions, sometimes credited, sometimes not. Much of this material falls within the murk of hazy legality, so its been reissued many, many times (most comprehensively on the 2000 Castle collection Hip Young Guitar Slinger & His Heavy Friends), so it would seem that theres not much need for this 20-track collection -- and, frankly, for many collectors, it probably wont be necessary, since this is all familiar stuff, including various live cuts with the Yardbirds, John Mayall, and Eric Clapton that have shown up numerous times before. However, this does a really nice job of picking the best cuts from these sessions, either in terms of Pages instrumental prowess or simply good sides. The best cuts are here are British Invasion tunes, whether its a fine reading of the Whos "Circles" by the Fleur de Lys or a deliriously infectious piece of fluff like Sean Buckleys "Everybody Knows," or even Nicos folky "Im Not Sayin," which kind of sounds like the roots of Led Zeppelin III. This is where Pages inventiveness is really evident, but the blues jams are bracing in their immediacy. Again, where this really carries an advantage over the other collections is the sharp track selection; it may not be as comprehensive as other collections, but it has the cream of the crop and good notes by Greg Russo, and tells most listeners everything they need to know about Page the session master.

Rock and Roll Highway : Allmusic album Review : Besides hardcore Led Zeppelin fans, its a little known fact that Jimmy Page produced and played on a 1970 album by theatrical rocker Screaming Lord Sutch, Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends. In addition to Pages appearance (he also co-penned a few tracks), the other friends included John Bonham, Jeff Beck, Nicky Hopkins, and Noel Redding. Since the album is quite difficult to find nowadays, select tracks have popped up over the years on compilations, such as the 2000 set Rock and Roll Highway. While Sutchs vocals can be quite grating at times, its interesting to hear songs that come close to approximating the Led Zeppelin sound at the time (namely Led Zeppelin II -- "Wailing Sounds," "Union Jack Car," "Flashing Lights," etc). After a while though, you start to wonder how much better these blues-rock compositions would have been if they included a more capable singer (namely Robert Plant). Also included on Rock and Roll Highway are a few tracks from Page and John Paul Jones days as session musicians -- "Everything I Do Is Wrong" and "Fabulous." If youre interested in sampling the playing of Page, Jones, and Bonham outside of Led Zeppelin, then Rock and Roll Highway is recommended.
