The Lemonheads
Allmusic Biography : The Lemonheads evolution from post-Hüsker Dü hardcore punk rockers to teenage heartthrobs is one of the strangest sagas in alternative music. Initially, the group was a punk-pop trio formed by three teenage Boston suburbanites, but over the years, the band became a vehicle for Evan Dando. Blessed with good looks and a warm, sweet voice, Dando became a teen idol in the early 90s, when Nirvanas success made alternative bands commercially viable. While his simple, catchy songs were instantly accessible, they tended to hide the more subversive nature of his lyrics, as well as his gift for offbeat covers and his devotion to country-rock father Gram Parsons. After developing his signature blend of pop, punk, and country-rock on several independent records in the late 80s, Dando moved the Lemonheads to Atlantic Records in 1990. Two years later, Its a Shame About Ray made the group into media sensations, as Dandos face appeared on music and teen magazines across America and Britain. Though the Lemonheads were poised to become superstars, the band never quite found the right breakthrough single, and their popularity peaked in the early 90s. Around the same time, Dando descended into severe drug abuse that he curbed by the 1996 release of Car Button Cloth. However, he had missed his chance at stardom -- though the group retained their cult following, much of their audience had already slipped away.

The son of a Boston attorney and a fashion model, Evan Dando (vocals, guitar, drums) formed the Lemonheads with his high-school classmates Ben Deily (vocals, guitar, drums) and Jesse Peretz (bass). Initially, the group was called the Whelps, but by the time the band made their debut EP, Laughing All the Way to the Cleaners, they had changed their name to the Lemonheads. Recorded the day after their high-school graduation, Laughing All the Way to the Cleaners was released on the groups own label, Huh-Bag. The EP gained the attention of the Boston-based indie label Taang!, which signed the band later that same year. By the beginning of 1987, Doug Trachten had become the bands full-time drummer, leaving Dando and Deily to share guitar and vocal duties. Hate Your Friends, a speedy hardcore LP that fell halfway between Hüsker Dü and the Replacements, was released in 1987. Trachten left after the records release, and the band made 1988s Creator with Blake Babies drummer John Strohm.

Released in 1989, Lick expanded the Lemonheads cult, thanks to a loud power pop cover of Suzanne Vegas "Luka." Following the release of Lick, Deily split and eventually formed the Pods and then Varsity Drag. Dando briefly played with the Blake Babies before forming a new version of the Lemonheads with drummer David Ryan. The Lemonheads signed with Atlantic Records in 1990, releasing Lovey, their most accomplished, melodic, and eclectic record to date, later that year. Dandos interest in the band began to wander the following year, as he recorded the solo EP Favorite Spanish Dishes. In 1992, he recorded Its a Shame About Ray, which featured Blake Baby Juliana Hatfield on bass and harmony vocals.

Its a Shame About Ray would prove to be the Lemonheads breakthrough album, but it didnt become a hit until a cover of Simon & Garfunkels "Mrs. Robinson" was added to the album several months after its initial release. By the end of 1992, the record had gained momentum, and Dando was being touted as the next alternative star. By the fall release of 1993s Come on Feel the Lemonheads, Dando had become a minor celebrity, appearing in gossip columns frequently and hanging out with fellow Gen-X icons, including actors like Johnny Depp and musicians like Holes Courtney Love. His fame was large enough to spark the creation of an anti-Dando fanzine, I Hate Evan Dando. Recorded with the bands new bassist Nic Dalton, Come on Feel was hyped as the album that would make the band superstars, but Dandos antics received more press than the record received airplay, even though "Into Your Arms" nearly scraped the pop charts. During the press junket to promote the album, he confessed to heavy use of hard drugs, including an escapade where he smoked enough crack to ruin his voice for several weeks. His addiction deepened throughout 1994, and he was frequently seen in a drug-induced haze on Oasis fall tour of Britain. Early in 1995, he launched a solo tour of the U.S. with Epic Soundtracks, after which he played the Glastonbury Festival, where he was booed for appearing several hours late.

Dando sobered up during the remaining months of 1995, though he hadnt completely stopped drinking by the time he recorded Car Button Cloth with a new lineup of the Lemonheads featuring former Dinosaur Jr. drummer Murph, guitarist John Strohm, and bassist Bill Gibson. The album was greeted with mixed reviews upon its fall 1996 release and failed to generate a hit single; furthermore, Dando launched no full-scale tour to support the album. Late the following year, the Lemonheads and Atlantic Records parted ways; Atlantic retained the rights for a greatest-hits album, which was released in mid-1998.

With the Lemonheads essentially broken-up, Dando kept a fairly low-profile in the years directly following the split from Atlantic. He reappeared for a solo tour in 2001 and then released the lowkey solo album Baby Im Bored in 2003. Three years later, Dando had reunited the Lemonheads and in 2006 the band released a self-titled album that, while not a revelation, certainly sounded like a worthy follow-up to Its a Shame About Ray and Car Button Cloth. In 2009, inspired by years of mixtapes given to Dando by his friend and Butthole Surfers-leader Gibby Haynes, the Lemonheads released the covers album Varshons.

The Lemonheads supported Varshons with a tour and between 2010 and 2012, and they often played Its a Shame About Ray in its entirety in concert. Rumors of a new, "punker" album circulated in 2012 -- largely emanating from Ryan Adams, who claimed he was playing drums on the sessions -- but the record never materialized. Instead, the Lemonheads went into hibernation, playing the occasional tour, then quietly resurfacing in early 2019 with Varshons 2, another covers album.

Hate Your Friends : Allmusic album Review : The Lemonheads debut album is a bit unfocused, spending most of its time thrashing around in post-Hüsker Dü hardcore punk, but its best moments ("Second Chance," "Fed Up") show that Evan Dando has a natural knack for pop hooks.

Creator : Allmusic album Review : Demonstrating an increased sense of pop, not only in their songwriting but also in their relatively measured performances, the Lemonheads turn in a winning second album with Creator. Although they still spend a little too much time mucking around with sub-hardcore noise, Evan Dandos gentler pop numbers are quite appealing, even when he treads a little too closely to dippy-hippie clichés, and they certainly point the way to the engaging punk-pop of Lick.

Lick : Allmusic album Review : Although its fairly incoherent, bouncing back and forth between punk-pop and folky pop, Lick is a thoroughly engaging record. The tensions between Evan Dando and Ben Deily are fairly evident throughout the album, especially since Dandos songs, with their immediate hooks and melodies, outshine his bandmates, but that unevenness makes the record endearingly messy. Also, the mess makes the groups best songs, including an inspired electric cover of Suzanne Vegas "Luka," shine all the more brightly.

Create Your Friends : Allmusic album Review : Create Your Friends combines the Lemonheads first two albums for Taang!, Hate Your Friends and Creator, on one compact disc. While this material is fairly inconsistent, the hardcore numbers are enjoyable Hüsker Dü and Replacements ripoffs, and several of the songs illustrate Evan Dandos talent for simple pop hooks.

Lovey : Allmusic album Review : Moving to a major label didnt affect the Lemonheads sound as much as the departure of Ben Deily; without him, Evan Dando was free to let his sensitive side run wild, which is exactly what he does on Lovey. Dando never completely abandons punk-pop on Lovey, but he does balance it with excursions into jangle pop and country-rock, some of his best songwriting to date. By now, he has begun to develop a signature voice, a distinctly suburban and middle-class voice that embraces the mundane details of everyday life. That gives songs like "Stove" and "Lil Seed" an off-kilter sensibility, which is made all the more appealing by his gift for simple hooks. Even though Dando has made significant strides forward, the most affecting moment on the record remains his stark and very pretty cover of Gram Parsons "Brass Buttons."

It’s a Shame About Ray : Allmusic album Review : If Lovey captured Evan Dando as he found his signature blend of punk-pop, jangle pop, and folk-rock, Its a Shame About Ray is where he perfected that style. Breezing by in under half an hour, the album is a simple collection of sunny melodies and hooks, delivered with typical nonchalance by Dando. None of the songs are about anything major, nor do they have astonishingly original melodies, but thats part of their charm -- theyre immediately accessible and thoroughly catchy. Dandos laid-back observations of middle-class outcasts are minor gems. The heartbroken title track or "Confetti," the crushes of "Bit Part in Your Life," the love letter to substances "My Drug Buddy," or the wonderful "Alisons Starting to Happen," where a girl finds herself as she discovers punk rock, capture the laconic rhythms of suburbia, and his warm, friendly voice, which is offset by Juliana Hatfields girlish harmonies, gives the songs an emotional resonance. [Its a Shame About Ray was later re-released with a competent punk-pop remake of Simon & Garfunkels "Mrs. Robinson" added as a bonus track. As Dando approached stardom, the album was repressed again with the title of "My Drug Buddy" truncated to "Buddy." It was later restored to its original title.]

Come On Feel The Lemonheads : Allmusic album Review : Come On Feel the Lemonheads should have been the album that propelled the trio and Evan Dando to stardom, but instead of delivering a concise pop record in the vein of Its a Shame About Ray, they made a messy album that never quite found its focus. Thats not to say that Come On Feel is without merit, because thats hardly the case. In many ways, its the most interesting record that the Lemonheads have released, because it finds Dando confused about everything, particularly love, both for girls and drugs, and his burgeoning fame. There are moments of self-indulgence, whether its the aimless piano instrumental "The Jello Fund" or two versions of the drug-obsessed "Style," yet they are as essential to the albums desperate tone as the heartbreaking acoustic ballad of "Favorite T." Between those two extremes is some of the finest power pop and country-rock Dando has ever written. He still has a tendency to be too cutesy, as on the otherwise winning country-rock of "Being Around" and "Big Gay Heart," but the hooky rush of "The Great Big No," the bright "Ill Do It Anyway," and the lovely simplicity of "Into Your Arms" is irresistible. Come On Feel may not be as consistent or immediate as Its a Shame About Ray, but finding its pleasures is quite rewarding.

Car Button Cloth : Allmusic album Review : Lemonheads leader EVAN DANDO is indeed a lemonhead. Or a bubblehead. And it still doesnt matter. The man is just too talented a tunesmith. Just as you shouldnt have been fooled by an overreaching, inane record company that marketed him for the teenyboppers as an "alterna-hunk" (who cares?), nor should anyone dismiss him just because his LPs always have a few outright duds on them ("Secular Rockulidge" here blows), making it seem that he writes too off-the-cuff or is too easily pleased. Nor should you write him off because his lyrics still stray into the sublimely idiotic (latest prose puzzler: "Khmer Rouge, Genocide qua" is not clever, its stoooopid Evan! All the more so in the middle of the near-perfect pop single "If I Could Talk Id Tell You."). And on the other side of the coin, I could rave about how Car Button Cloth is a mature work, more scattershot but ultimately more satisfying than the well-venerated Its a Shame About Ray and better thought out than the up-and-down, spastic Cmon Feel The Lemonheads. But, frankly, I dont give a (fill in naughty expletive of choice) about any of this. The important things are the HOOKS, which are plentiful and often instantly timeless, and Dandos voice, which becomes more convincing, sensitive, throaty, introspective, humble, and edgy each time out. And the overall attitude, which is loose but dripping with sincerity, earnestness, and real feeling. Sure, Dandos got the goods, and songs such as "Its All True" and "Break Me" are the sort that a million bands would work years at 7-11 to call their own. It almost seems unfair; hes written so many great ones this decade. But just as importantly, Dando has perfected the art of just being himself, without pretension, and its a hell of a lot more honest and real and enjoyable than a truck load of overhyped, super-hip, underground product this year that, though far more high-brow, is ultimately tight-assed, calculating, suffocating, and worthless in comparison. Id rather go where the real fun is, and its here. The first three songs alone are like love at first hearing.

The Best of the Lemonheads: The Atlantic Years : Allmusic album Review : Evan Dando -- for all intents and purposes, he is the Lemonheads -- is a sporadically brilliant songwriter. Every one of his albums contains as many flops as masterpieces, sometimes more. Hardcore fans have learned to live with this and even cherish his dopey detours, but there are many others who would prefer to have all the best bits on one disc. Which means, of course, that The Best of the Lemonheads: The Atlantic Years offered the perfect opportunity to achieve that goal. Unfortunately, it was bungled, at least in America (it was released in Europe and Japan with more tracks). With the exception of "Mrs. Robinson" (never a favorite of hardcore fans, but included for those nostalgic Gen-Xers), its hard to argue with whats here, but it feels criminally brief at 12 tracks, especially since the songs are rarely over three minutes long. Its entertaining, to be sure, and it makes a convincing argument that Dando is a clever pop craftsman, but it leaves you wanting more -- which isnt really what best-of albums should do.

The Lemonheads : Allmusic album Review : Many bands break up at the right time, or at least a little past it, but the Lemonheads disbandment seemed premature, particularly because it didnt seem like they officially broke up; they just faded away. For Lemonheads leader Evan Dando, it was a surprisingly quick fall from glory -- or at least from being a Sassy star and one of Peoples Most Beautiful People, touted as the next big thing after Kurt Cobain, to being alt-rocks most notorious also-ran. Not long after the groups fourth album for Atlantic, 1996s Car Button Cloth, he quietly pulled the plug on the group and slinked away from the spotlight, taking a long, long time to recharge. After seven years, he resurfaced with a sleepy but likeable solo debut called Baby Im Bored in 2003, and that activity apparently lit a fire underneath Dando, since three years later he reunited the Lemonheads, releasing an eponymous album that fall. The album only confirms the suspicion that the group should never have broken up -- unless that Dando needed the time to sober up and get refocused, since he certainly couldnt have made a record as tight and direct as this in the mid-90s. Lord knows he tried, but for as wonderful as much of 1993s Come on Feel the Lemonheads and Car Button Cloth are, both are ragged and filled with aimless filler, two things thankfully missing from The Lemonheads. Like the 1992 power pop classic Its a Shame About Ray, this is brief, lively, and tuneful, filled with two-to-three-minute songs that make their point and then get out of the way. If this isnt as incandescent, joyful, and effervescent as Its a Shame About Ray, thats because this is the work of a different band, one thats a bit older and not quite as exuberant, but one that nevertheless displays a renewed vigor and sense of purpose. And not only does the band sound excellent -- whether theyre working as a trio or being goosed along by J Mascis, who provides typically excellent guitar on occasion here -- but they have a good batch of songs here that add up to Dandos most consistent album in years. Theyre zippier and catchier than anything on Baby Im Bored, and even if there arent any outright immediate classics along the lines of "If I Could Talk Id Tell You," song for song this builds into not only a strong comeback, but one of the groups better records. The best thing that can be said about The Lemonheads is that it sounds like the album Dando and company should have released in 1995 -- and that it sounds like they could turn another of these out soon and that itd be every bit as good. Which is the right kind of return for a band that should never have gone away in the first place.

Varshons : Allmusic album Review : Inspirations rarely come more inspired than Gibby Haynes, the leader of the Butthole Surfers. For years, Gibby slipped Evan Dando mixtapes, and the Lemonheads leader pays tribute with Varshons, a covers album largely consisting of songs from those cassettes and produced by Haynes. At first glance this pairing might seem odd, but Gibby and Evan are both old hardcore punks with a taste for the strange. Evan may have crossed over more than Gibby, who made a career out of odd, but he never quite abandoned weirdness, with even Come on Feel the Lemonheads collapsing in the murk of "The Jello Fund." All the same, Varshons is easily the strangest Lemonheads record in maybe two decades and its not so coincidentally one of their best, perched between the ragged, formless mess of their earliest records and Dandos enduring love for sweetly weathered country-rock. Gram Parsons, Evans longtime idol, surfaces on Varshons, as does Townes Van Zandt, but a truer indication of the sun-warped spirit of the album lies in how the Lemonheads revamp Wires "Fragile" into country-rock or how scum-rocker G.G. Allins "Layin Up with Linda" is given a murder ballad revision that resonates. But Varshons isnt all country -- theres a thick layer of Texas psychedelic haze, a rather ingenious take on Christina Aguileras "Beautiful," a duet with Liv Tyler on Leonard Cohens "Hey Thats No Way to Say Goodbye," and, popping out of nowhere, a stiff new wave workout called "Dirty Robot" featuring Kate Moss on lead vocals. This sense of adventure ties Varshons to those earliest Lemonheads records, but the group marries that spirit to Dandos exceptionally intuitive interpretive skills, turning the album into a bit of a rough, unpolished gem.
