Louis Prima
Allmusic Biography : A tireless showman and an underrated musical talent, Louis Prima swung his way to icon status thanks to an irresistible, infectious sound whose appeal translated across generations. Nominally a swing artist, Primas distinctive sound also encompassed New Orleans-style jazz, boogie-woogie, jump blues, R&B;, early rock & roll, and even the occasional Italian tarantella. Regardless of what form his music took, it swung hard and fast, with a rolling, up-tempo shuffle beat that helped some of his earlier material cross over to R&B; audiences (his songs were also covered by jump blues artists from time to time). His greatest period of popularity coincided with his marriage to singer Keely Smith, whose coolly sophisticated vocals and detached stage manner made a perfect counterpoint to Primas boisterous presence: mugging, clowning, and cavorting around the stage with the boundless enthusiasm of a hyperactive boy. Primas band during this time was anchored by tenor saxophonist Sam Butera, whose grounding in jump blues and New Orleans R&B; was a perfect match. Perhaps because Prima refused to take his music too seriously, sober-minded jazz critics often dismissed him as a mere entertainer, overlooking his very real talent as a jazzman. He was a capable, gravelly-voiced singer modeled on Louis Armstrong, boasting a surprising range, and was also a fine trumpet player, again in the irrepressible mold of Armstrong; what was more, he wrote Benny Goodmans perennial swing smash "Sing, Sing, Sing." Primas impact on popular culture was also significant; his pronounced ethnicity made it safe for other Italian-American singers to acknowledge their roots, and he was the first high-profile musical act to take up regular residence in the lounges and casinos of Las Vegas, helping to start the citys transformation into a broader-based entertainment capital. His musical legacy proved long-lasting, as covers of his classics became modern-day hits for David Lee Roth and Brian Setzer; additionally, the 90s swing revival, which sought to re-emphasize the danceability and sense of fun that had largely disappeared from jazz, brought Primas music back into the limelight (as well as the good graces of critics).

Louis Prima was born December 7, 1910 in New Orleans, LA, to an Italian family whod emigrated to the U.S. by way of Argentina. He took violin lessons as a youth, but switched to trumpet at age 15 when his older brother went out on tour with a band and left a spare instrument behind. By 17, Prima was playing professionally at a New Orleans theater, influenced chiefly by Louis Armstrong and King Oliver. This was a problem, since the theater was not a jazz venue, and Prima was fired. In the early 30s, he caught on with cornetist Red Nichols for a time, and moved to New York in 1934 at the urging of star bandleader Guy Lombardo, who had been impressed with Primas trumpet playing. Initially struggling to find work, Prima formed a Dixieland-style backing group called the New Orleans Gang and landed a regular gig at a 52nd Street club known as the Famous Door. The band was a hit, adopting "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans" as their signature song, and recorded numerous sides for a succession of labels up through 1939; some of the better-known members included -- at various points -- clarinetist Pee Wee Russell, pianist Claude Thornhill, guitarist George Van Eps, reedman Eddie Miller, and trombonist George Brunies. Prima also traveled to Los Angeles periodically, and made cameo appearances in several Hollywood musicals, starting with the Bing Crosby Western Rhythm on the Range in 1936.

Meanwhile, Prima was composing original material, and in 1937 he completed a song called "Sing, Sing, Sing." Benny Goodman recorded an instrumental version and had a huge smash with it the following year, spotlighting it in his legendary Carnegie Hall appearance; to this day it remains one of the most readily identifiable melodies of the swing era. Prima broke up the New Orleans Gang in 1939 to form his own big band, which he dubbed the Gleeby Rhythm Orchestra. Following World War II, the band started to take off, landing hits with novelty numbers that often drew upon Primas Italian background and accent. The first was 1944s "Angelina," a major success that paved the way for titles like "Felicia No Capicia," "Bacciagaloop (Makes Love on the Stoop)," "Please No Squeeza Da Banana," and "Josephina, Please No Leana on the Bell." Prima also made the Hit Parade Top Ten with songs like "Robin Hood" (1944; covered the next year by Les Brown for a bigger hit), "Bell Bottom Trousers" (sung by Lily Ann Carol in 1945), and "Civilization (Bongo, Bongo, Bongo)" (1947). He also wrote Jo Staffords 1947 hit "A Sunday Kind of Love."

In 1948, Prima hired a new female vocalist for his band, a 16-year-old Norfolk, Virginia native named Dorothy Keely, who was renamed Keely Smith. Prima parlayed her initial shyness into a stage routine where he attempted to break down her icily reserved façade. The contrast in their styles made for immediate chemistry, and Smiths boyish haircut only added to the duos distinctive stage presence. Prima broke up the big band in 1949, and continued to work with Smith as a more streamlined nightclub act. They scored a hit in 1950 with their co-composition "Oh Babe!" and toured the country over the next few years. In the summer of 1953, Smith became Primas fourth wife.

By late 1954, Prima was finding bookings harder and harder to come by. He talked a friend into booking him for an extended stay at the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas, and while passing through New Orleans, he recruited locally popular tenor saxophonist Sam Butera as a possible collaborator if things went well. They did, and Prima called Butera out to Vegas, asking him to bring a few more musicians; the new group debuted at the Sahara on the day after Christmas, and Butera dubbed them the Witnesses during Primas first on-stage introduction. Their act quickly became a sensation around Las Vegas, and their engagement turned into a residency, billed as "The Wildest Show in Vegas," which ran up to five times a night. Prima and Smiths comic banter was riddled with sexual innuendo, and they sometimes rewrote the lyrics to popular standards in the same spirit; meanwhile, Buteras jump blues/R&B; background kept the music equally lively. Even if the music was aimed at older listeners, it shared a great deal of the spirit of early rock & roll.

In 1956, Prima inked a new deal with Capitol, which marked the beginning of the most celebrated and influential period of his recording career. His first album for the label was 1956s The Wildest!, which successfully translated the high energy of his live act into a studio recording; it featured many of his best-known latter-day songs, including the "Just a Gigolo/I Aint Got Nobody" medley, "Jump, Jive an Wail," "Buona Sera," "Oh Marie," and the jive-talking duet "The Lip." Over the next few years, Capitol issued six more Prima albums, highlighted by 1957s The Call of the Wildest and 1958s concert set The Wildest Show in Tahoe. He appeared frequently on The Ed Sullivan Show and other variety programs, and in 1958 he and Smith won a Grammy for their hit version of "That Old Black Magic." In 1959, they appeared in the film Hey Boy! Hey Girl!, which featured their renditions of the title song, "Lazy River," and "Banana Split for My Baby," among others.

While Prima and Smith boasted terrific chemistry on stage, their infidelity-riddled marriage was floundering by the close of the 50s. In 1961, Prima switched from Capitol to Dot Records, and from the Sahara Hotel to the Desert Inn; with his popularity still running high, both deals netted huge sums of money. However, Smith divorced him later that year, scuttling the act and largely negating the deals. Prima returned to Capitol for one final album, 1962s The Wildest Comes Home, and hired a new female vocalist, Gia Maione, who became his fifth wife in 1963. Without Smith, he was never again as popular or prolific on record, but he continued to perform in Las Vegas with Butera and the Witnesses, and toured successfully as well. In 1967, Disney tapped Prima to voice the character of King Louie, ruler of the orangutans, in its animated adaptation of The Jungle Book; his featured number, the swinging "I Wanna Be Like You," ranks among the best-loved Disney songs of its era.

Prima spent much of the late 60s and early 70s playing Vegas casinos and lounges, most notably at the Sands Hotel. With more and more musical acts taking up residence in the city, Prima no longer had the drawing power of old, and in the early 70s he and Butera returned home to New Orleans, where they made a steadier living playing in the French Quarter for the tourist crowd. In late 1975, Prima underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor, and fell into a coma; although he survived for nearly three more years, he never regained consciousness, and died on August 24, 1978. Primas music began to reappear in subsequent years; ex-Van Halen singer David Lee Roth scored the best-remembered hit of his solo career with a carbon-copy version of "Just a Gigolo/I Aint Got Nobody" in 1985, and onetime Stray Cat Brian Setzer scored a Grammy-winning hit with his cover of "Jump, Jive an Wail." Primas original version was featured in a Gap commercial around the same time, and the swing-dancing fad of the time helped bring the rest of his music back into the public eye. Meanwhile, Sam Butera continued to perform Prima hits from the golden years on the casino circuits in Las Vegas and Atlantic City.

Together : Allmusic album Review : Although volatile enough not to last, the musical partnership of husband-and-wife team Louis Prima and Keely Smith made for potent entertainment and unbeatable chemistry. While Prima channeled the voice and trumpet playing of Louis Armstrong through a boisterous lounge lizard persona, Smith exuded detached sophistication and elegance with her smooth, clear vocals.

During their famed Las Vegas run in the 1950s, the pair would playfully duke it out on stage, while saxophonist Sam Butera and his Witnesses provided pitch-perfect backing. This set includes many of Prima and Smiths finest studio moments, but the energy of their live shows is still palpable on tunes such as the celebratory title track and the jokey "Nyow! Not Nyow! (The Pussycat Song)." The number that best sums up the Prima/Smith union is, of course, the he-said/she-said classic "Lets Call The Whole Thing Off." Although the couple did call it off by the 60s, TOGETHER serves as a charming document of their free-spirited collaboration.

Wonderland by Night : Allmusic album Review : Wonderland By Night is a far cry from the boisterous, good-time Italian swing of Louis Primas popular Capitol recordings. This sequel to Primas 1960 album, Pretty Music: Prima Style, is comprised of orchestral pop instrumentals, some of which incorporate a wordless vocal chorus. Nighttime is the theme of the album, with Primas trumpet out in front to carry the melody. Primas copycat version of the title track competed on the charts with Bert Kaempferts original, but Kaempfert enjoyed substantially greater success. Wonderland By Night is a fine, atmospheric album that sets an evening mood any time of the day, but is completely unlike the music for which Prima is best known.

Louis Prima: Capitol Collector's Series : Allmusic album Review : What Louis Prima accomplished musically in the company of Sam Butera and the Witnesses and vocalist Keely Smith is in hard evidence on this excellent 26-track compilation. All the classics are aboard with excellent liner notes from Scott Shea and crisp transfers of the original masters ("Angelina-Zooma Zooma," "That Old Black Magic," "Ive Got You Under My Skin," "Buona Sera" -- which includes a great snippet of studio chatter kicking it off -- "Oh Marie," and the obligatory "Just a Gigolo-I Aint Got Nobody"). Although this duplicates several tracks with Rhinos Zooma! Zooma! compilation, with the addition of several singles and unissued tracks, this stands as the best single-disc collection available of Primas tenure with Capitol Records. The perfect place to start your Louis Prima collection.

The Capitol Recordings : Allmusic album Review : This excellent eight-disc Bear Family box celebrates Louis Primas Capitol Recordings of the 50s and 60s. Since his wife and comedic foil Keely Smith and Sam Butera and the Witnesses (Primas ace backing unit) both recorded as solo acts during this period, theyre exhaustively represented by this box as well. The first three discs cover all of Primas studio sides and starts up the live recordings with the 1962 Harrahs Club in Tahoe sides, while disc four covers all of the seminal live tracks from 1957 and 1958. Discs five and six are the complete Keely Smith solo recordings, while the last two round up all the sides by Sam Butera and the Witnesses. The truly amazing thing about the 199 (!!!) tracks collected here is how little of it is unissued material. Even if Prima cut some duds now and then, its pretty wild that Capitol used up damn near every last thing the man ever committed to magnetic tape, such was the high quality of rockin mayhem he was laying down. And rock it does, all of it infested with much good humor along with Primas and Buteras other contribution to big-beat mania, the invention of the Vegas shuffle, a loping beat that could be sped up to almost double tempo on any given number. This effect -- the solid core of Primas rockin groove -- is best heard on tracks like "When Youre Smiling/The Sheik of Araby," and the later version from the Hey Boy! Hey Girl! movie soundtrack of "Oh Marie" (stupendous in the scattin and honkin exchange between Prima and Butera), "Basin Street Blues/When Its Sleepy Time Down South," and, of course, "Just a Gigolo/I Aint Got Nobody," the track that David Lee Roth brought to the charts in the 80s. The duets with Keely Smith ("Ive Got You Under My Skin," "That Old Black Magic") and Sam Butera (Richard Berrys "Next Time") are here to savor as well and its all very fine, indeed. After four discs of Primas wild-ass genius, the next two of Smith with big-band backings from Nelson Riddle and Billy May will seem sedate by comparison, but theyre 50s-style Capitol tracks with their own charm. Great tunes and arrangements, plus the inclusion of her duets with Frank Sinatra makes a nice bonus highlight. The final two discs of Sam Butera come much closer to Primas rockin slant on things, with rocked-up jazz classics and R&B tunes galore keeping the party goin all night long. Needless to say, if youre a Louis Prima fan bordering on fanatic, this is the one to have.

Let's Fly With Mary Poppins : Allmusic album Review : The score of Mary Poppins was recorded by many singers and musicians after the movies premiere in 1964, including Duke Ellington and John Coltrane ("Chim Chim Cheree"). Singer-trumpeter Louis Prima was one of the first, cutting versions of "A Spoonful of Sugar" and "Stay Awake" before executives from the Buena Vista label (owned by Disney) suggested he record enough additional material for a full album. The music ended up quite lightweight, and this set is very brief (27 minutes). Prima only takes one trumpet solo (a rather weak statement on "The Perfect Nanny"), and the ten numbers (two of which are performed twice, the second time in Italian) are essentially treated as novelties by Prima and his then-wife Gia Maione. Only one number is longer than 2:41 and, although there is a cheerful warmth in the vocal interplay of Prima and Maione, the end results are rather pointless. "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" (especially the Italian version) is difficult to sit through. A historical curiosity but little more.

Buona Sera : Allmusic album Review : Louis Prima, a trumpeting, band-leading apostle of King Oliver and Louis Armstrong, comes across as the entertaining extrovert in the wildly expressive tradition of Al Jolson. This collection is from Primas post-WW II nightclub period, when he had fully developed a Louis Armstrong presentation of novelty playing with a solid swing and jazz backing band. Wife Keely Smith figures prominently as a backing vocalist, and that on-it band is Sam Butera and the Witnesses. This places these songs in the late 50s, after tenor saxophonist and bandleader Butera joined and before Primas divorce from Smith. These are the Las Vegas days and the arrangements are calculated to give the audience the expected Italian dialect and swing band tricks.

Swing 'n Jive : Allmusic album Review : Swing N Jive comprises 40s recordings of Louis Prima leading his orchestra. Yes, he sings on virtually every cut, but not with Keely Smith. He fronts the band, solos, and vocalizes, but with the exception of three of these 14 tracks, he does so alone. Theres a version of "Nosy Body," with Lily Ann Carol, a reading of Slim Gaillards classic "Vout Cowboy," with Foy Willing and the cowboy group Riders of the Purple Sage, and "Mahzel" with Cathy Allan. There is an excellent version of "Hi-Ho Trailus Bootwhip," that kicks the set off as well. The music here is terrific. The sound, however, is another matter entirely. While its not terrible, the masters were either in poor shape, or these are radio transcriptions and live tracks, and its difficult to tell because no source information is given in the liner booklet. If you are a hardcore Prima fan, though, you need these just the same.

Best of the War Years : Allmusic album Review : While it would have been more preferable for Stardust to issue the complete V-Disc sessions of Louis Prima & His Orchestra, this 23-track selection of his recordings between 1944 and 1950 is pretty tight and presented expertly for a decent price. The bands Prima kept during the war years were remarkably consistent in personnel (Leon, Louis brother, was the other trumpet player in the band), with very few changes. Here are V-disc versions of the bands singles -- tough, rowdy, and swinging versions of "Robin Hood," "Just a Gigolo," "I Dont Care if the Sun Dont Shine," "Angelina," "Felecia No Capecia," and "A Sunday Kind of Love" are juxtaposed against racier tunes such as "Please No Squeeza da Banana" and flat-out jump tracks like "Brooklyn Boogie." In addition to the early band tracks, Stardust has included the first performances with vocalists Lily Ann Carol from 1946 and Keely Smith from 1950. The version of "Buona Sera" that closes the set is easily the most beautiful version Prima ever recorded. No doubt most Prima fans already have this material, but for those just getting on the bandwagon, this is a great introduction to his music outside the Capitol period.
