Allmusic Biography : Celebrated for his modular, repetitive style, minimalist composer Michael Nyman was among experimental musics most high-profile proponents, best known in connection with his film scores for director Peter Greenaway. Born in London on March 23, 1944, he studied at the Royal Academy of Music and Kings College, London, under communist composer Alan Bush and Thurston Dart, a musicologist specializing in the English Baroque. Under Darts tutelage, Nyman was introduced to 16th- and 17th-century English rounds and canons, their repetitive, contrapuntal lines highly influencing his own later work; Dart also encouraged him to travel to Romania in the interest of seeking out the countrys native folk music traditions. Upon graduating during the mid-60s, Nyman found himself disconnected from both the pop music of the times and the school of modern composition heralded by Stockhausen; as a result, from 1964 to 1976, he worked not as a composer but as a music critic, writing for publications including The Listener, New Statesman, and The Spectator. In a review of British composer Cornelius Cardew, he first introduced the word "minimalism" as a means of musical description. During this same period, Nyman did continue performing, appearing with artists ranging from the Scratch Orchestra and Portsmouth Sinfonia to Steve Reich and the Flying Lizards. In 1974, he wrote the influential book Experimental Music -- Cage and Beyond, an exploration of the influence of John Cage on a generation of composers and performers. Perhaps its most profound impact was on Nyman himself, who through writing the book seemed to discover his own muse; in 1976 he accepted an invitation from Harrison Birtwistle, Director of Music at the National Theatre, to arrange a number of 18th-century Venetian popular songs for a production of Goldonis Il Campiello. Nymans arrangements consisted of medieval instruments -- rebecs, sackbuts and shawms, bass drums, soprano saxophones, and the like -- designed for maximum loudness to produce a distinctive instrumental color; when the production ended, he began composing original music merely to keep the same group of musicians together. Originally an acoustic unit, when rechristened the Michael Nyman Band in the early 80s, amplification became essential to their aesthetic. Nymans first major success came in 1982 with the score to the Greenaway film The Draughtsmans Contract; his subsequent collaborations with Greenaway on pictures including 1988s Drowning By Numbers, 1989s The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, and 1991s Prosperos Books remain among his most high-profile works, their notoriety coming at the risk of overshadowing his forays into opera, chamber music, vocal music, and dance scores. The signatures of Nymans work include not only his use of propulsive repetition, but also a palette of idiosyncratic instrumental touches -- thumping keyboards, "rude" bass clarinets, and baritone saxophones, and extreme high and low octave doublings. Mozart was a central influence in much of his work, including 1976s In Re Don Giovanni and 1983s Ill Stake My Cremona to a Jews Trump; Schumann, meanwhile, was the major inspiration behind the acclaimed 1986 chamber opera The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, while Bartok shades 1988s String Quartet No. 2, commissioned for the Indian dancer and choreographer Shobana Jeyasingh. In 1990, Nyman composed Six Celan Songs, a work based on the poems of Paul Celan, for the German cabaret singer Ute Lemper, with whom he first worked on the score for Prosperos Books. His most emotional compositions to date, they served as the clear impetus for his score to Jane Campions 1992 film The Piano, easily Nymans best-known work; like so many of his compositions, he obsessively reworked the music to The Piano time and time again, the haunting melodies reappearing arranged for standard piano concerto, for two pianos, for chamber ensemble, for soprano saxophone and strings (Lost and Found), and for soprano and string quartet (The Piano Sings). While 1992s The Upside-Down Violin reflected Nymans continuing fascination with traditional ethnic musics, 1993s MGV, or Musique a Grande Vitesse, returned to the propulsive sounds of the Michael Nyman Band. Other major works include 1992s Time Will Pronounce, 1993s Yamamoto Perpetuo (a composition for unaccompanied violin written for Alexander Balanescu), 1994s solo harpsichord work Tango for Tim, and 1995s String Quartet No. 4. Among Nymans film scores: 1995s Carrington and 1997s Gattaca.

The Essential Michael Nyman Band : Allmusic album Review : The Essential Michael Nyman Band collects some of the music Michael Nyman has composed for the films of director Peter Greenaway. The films represented here are The Draughtmans Contract, A Zed & Two Noughts, Drowning by Numbers, The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, Water Dances, and Prosperos Books. One might consider this collection to be a "Best of Nyman/Greenaway." Nymans music is an essential element of Greenaways films, as the director usually shoots his film to the music after it has been composed and recorded. Greenaways films are known to be surreal, manipulative endeavors, and the Nyman compositions on this album are no different. Theres an off-kilter intensity to much of the goings-on, and Nymans band always sounds commited to achieving the final, epic vision. The selected compositions are all quite superb, showcasing meditative pieces with all-out classical attacks worthy of a disturbed techno artist. Nymans music reveals many emotional layers, including the distant, baroque grandeur of "Time-Lapse," the sad grace of "Fish Beach," and the modern opera of "Miserere Paraphrase." Most of Nymans critics lump him into the school of classical minimalism associated with Philip Glass and Steve Reich. That is pretty good company to keep. While there are ample doses of repetition in Nymans work, there is always some greater destination. Most of the pieces here hover around the five-minute mark, making the entire album quite accessible. The title of the album says it all for Nyman or Greenaway fans, as it is certainly nice to have the strongest tracks from the film scores in one place.

Michael Nyman Live : Allmusic album Review : Chameleon-like and resistant to categorization, Michael Nyman is one of the most eclectic composers to emerge from the late twentieth centurys minimalist scene. Nymans music encompasses many styles, not only the neo-Baroque pastiches in his film music but also popular and world music styles that may be less familiar. This live recording makes Nymans diverse output comprehensible and amounts to his first greatest-hits package. The program opens with In Re Don Giovanni, a fun pattern piece drawn from the introductory measures of Leporellos Catalogue Aria. Bird List, with its obsessive backbeat and hard saxophone edge, is somewhere between minimalism and rock, an ambiguity Nyman clearly intended. The Queen of the Night, adapted from Nymans soundtrack for The Draughtsmans Contract, is an extended version of one of the films mordant pieces. Water Dances, in two movements entitled "Dipping" and "Stroking," is derived from pop harmonies of the 1960s, which Nyman admits as an important influence. The Upside-Down Violin features the Moroccan Orquesta Andaluzi de Tetuoan and provides an example of Nymans ethnic explorations. The atmospheric concert suite from the soundtrack for The Piano is perhaps Nymans most widely acclaimed work, and here it brings several ovations from the audience.

Sangam: Michael Nyman meets Indian Masters : Allmusic album Review : Sangam is an "East meets West" collaboration that combines the talents of Hindi singing legends Rajan and Sajan Misra, mandolinist U. Shrinivas, and English minimalist composer Michael Nyman. This project was initially supported by the Asian Music Circuit and the British Council acting under the umbrella of the Arts Council of England. Nyman is no stranger to Indian classical music, having utilized it before in his String Quartet No. 2 of 1988. In this instance, Nyman traveled to India took seek out collaborators for a relevant work, ultimately settling on the Misras and Shrinivas, co-creating a score with each. The Michael Nyman Band plays a very low-key, restrained accompaniment beneath the Misras voices on "Three Ways of Describing Rain," and likewise, Shrinivas contribution is to be found in a half-hour-long work entitled "Compiling the Colors." Like most "East meets West" combinations, the component artists are notably stronger on their own turf and the proceedings represent a sort of compromise. Nonetheless, this is very colorful and non-confrontational music that may appeal to music lovers on either side of the tracks.

Nyman/Greenaway Revisited : Allmusic album Review : Before breaking into the mainstream with his lush music for Jane Campions 1993 film The Piano, Michael Nyman was best known for his association with avant-garde director Peter Greenaway, and his scores for The Draughtsmans Contract; A Zed and Two Noughts; Drowning by Numbers; The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover; and Prosperos Books are well-remembered by admirers of these art-house classics. Nyman/Greenaway Revisited, the second volume in The Composers Cut Series, highlights these early soundtracks, and the best-known selections are brought together in revitalized performances from 2005 by the Michael Nyman Band, with the exception of Memorial, which dates back to 1992. Of all the tracks, Memorial has become one of Nymans signature themes and has had an independent concert life outside the score for The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover; one wonders why it did not receive a fresh makeover considering its popularity and prominence in Nymans repertoire. However, there is no sense of incongruity between this recording and the others, because Nymans ensemble consistently plays with energy and edginess, and there has been no diminution in its powers since its first recordings of these cutting-edge pieces in the 1980s and 90s. Despite the intervening years, the "hot" sound that is characteristic of Nymans recordings also appears here, and the production by Abbey Road Studios gives the album a clean and even reproduction. This disc is recommended as a good introduction to Nymans modular style of minimalist music, though collectors who already have the original soundtrack albums may only want it for the sake of completeness.

The Glare : Allmusic album Review : For the benefit of non-Britons, David McAlmont is a vocal sensation hailing from the U.K., noted for his work with the two-man groups Thieves, McAlmont & Butler, and as a solo artist. McAlmonts collaborations were not very long lived enterprises, partly as McAlmont is tough on collaborators, and though he is known to have mended fences with those he has broken with, its usually long after the fact. Classical composer Michael Nyman is noted for his calm demeanor and patience; while he might seem an unlikely match for the flamboyant McAlmont, here they are together on MNs The Glare. The title work is a song cycle based on McAlmonts own poems, which are further based on news events that happened in the year 2008, though it is not always clear from the lyrics alone what McAlmont is singing about. Nyman occasionally dips into textures he has used before, such as in "In Re Don Giovanni," to find the right setting for McAlmonts words, but it is clear this is the object of dipping back into his bag, and not because Nyman is being particularly lax about the project. It is hard to avoid suggesting the overall effect of The Glare is rather similar to Burt Bacharachs 2004 collaboration with soul-specialist Ron Isley, though that was a very good show. So, essentially, is this, with the major differences being that the songs are original to the project and that Nymans style is considerably tarter and employs far more economy of means than Bacharachs complex polyrhythms and tendency toward thick chords. As McAlmonts singing is so stylized, however, it would have been very useful to have on hand the lyrics, or at least a summary of their content, as it would let the listener in on what the meaning of these songs are. There is no need for the usual pop mystique in regard to the words, and clarity of purpose should have been the main consideration in the presentation of The Glare. From Nymans end, he has adapted to McAlmonts delivery and sense of style with the same facility as in his work with German cabaret artist Ute Lemper. Songs for Tony (1993) is scored for sax quartet and has been recorded before; here it is heard from Nymans own sax section. The four movements of the piece are presented as one long, 17-minute track; the lack of access points for the individual movements is a bit of a disadvantage. With its liberal use of slap-tongue on the baritone and high register writing in the soprano, the first movement, titled "Aggressive" in some sources, amusingly almost sounds like "what if the Six Brown Brothers played minimalism?" The rest of the piece, however, is restrained and reflective, and suits well the music it is paired with. Apart from the minor quibbles already mentioned, overall McAlmont and Nymans MN release represents a seamless marriage of popular idioms with classical form and results in an eminently satisfying listening experience.

Chasing Pianos : Allmusic album Review : Ukrainian pianist Valentina Lisitsa has taken an unusual path toward career development: she posted her Chopin performances to YouTube, gained a strong following there, and then hired the London Symphony Orchestra for a set of Rachmaninov concerto performances. The gambit seems to be working: Lisitsas performances of late Romantic repertoire have been reasonably well received, and now shes earned the right to implement what one imagines was the point of the whole exercise in the first place: the pursuit of the crossover audience centered above all in Britain. There is no denying that Chasing Pianos works well. British composer Michael Nyman has made a long specialty out of minimalist music that shades in the direction of melodic pop. Although Nyman has stated that opera is his favored genre, the style is ideally suited to film scores, and his music for The Piano (1993) is a classic of the genre. That score, adapted for solo piano, is heavily featured here, along with music from other scores that is artfully chosen to give just enough contrast to avoid sheer repetitiveness without disturbing the basic calm surface. Lisitsas style, flawlessly precise and slightly mechanical, fits this music in a rather eerie way, and fans of Nymans music will doubtless find a fresh and exciting take on it here. Those coming to the music from the film The Piano or from one of the other soundtracks represented should also be pleased. The sound, from the concert hall at Britains Wyastone Estate, is unusually well suited to the project: dreamy and soft without being overly gauzy.
