Nightmares on Wax | ||
Allmusic Biography : Originally the combined project of George Evelyn and Kevin "Boywonder" Harper -- the latter of whom was eventually replaced by Robin Taylor-Firth -- Nightmares on Wax became one of the brightest spots on the post-rave British techno map of the early 90s. NoWs debut album, A Word of Science, was -- along with early tracks by LFO, Tuff Little Unit, and Tricky Disco -- a crucial bridge between the competing influences of New York house and electro, Detroit techno and soul, London rave and acid, and the burgeoning eclecticism of the years to come. Formed in the late 80s in West Yorkshire as an extension of Evelyn and companys b-boy crew the Soul City Rockers, NoWs first singles, "Dextrous" and "Aftermath," were both highly regarded, and the latter shot into the U.K. pop singles Top 40. The subsequent album laid a good deal of the groundwork for the downtempo experimental hip-hop/electro-funk worked over by Mike Paradinas, Luke Vibert, Spacer, and others, and earned the group a secure spot among technos select crew of next-step innovators. The group nonetheless disbanded following Sciences release, with early contributor Kevin Harper leaving to pursue a DJ career and Evelyn turning out a smattering of house tracks on Warps Nucleus subsidiary before settling into bedroom woodshed mode, often joined by Taylor-Firth. Following a four-year hiatus, Evelyn resurfaced with a track on the Mo Wax Headz compilation and, soon after, Smokers Delight, basically an instrumental hip-hop album with a distinctively British eclecticism. Still involved with the same sorts of genre-spanning sampler-and-sequencer experiments, Smokers Delight was also less obvious, suited more to repeat listenings than previous material. The same was also true for 1999s Carboot Soul, Evelyns first album as part of a deal with American indie label Matador for domestic distribution. In 2000, NoW produced the first new track by De La Soul in several years, included on an EP -- Sound of N.O.W -- featuring the rap pioneers. Following on its heels was a volume in the Studio !K7 mix series DJ-Kicks. Two years later, Evelyn delivered his fourth LP, Mind Elevation. A bigger gap preceded the release of his next proper LP for Warp, but In a Space Outta Sound finally appeared in 2006, while 2008s Thought So... and the unmixed selector compilation Coming Home followed closely behind. Evelyn continued to work as a downtempo DJ, collaborated with Jazzanova arranger Sebastian Studnitzky, and released Feelin Good, another eclectic set of productions, in 2013. The following year brought a retrospective set, N.O.W. Is the Time, to celebrate 25 years of activity. Morgan Geist, Optimos JD Twitch, and Ashley Beedle, among others, granted remixes. Evelyn issued the Ground Floor EP, featuring Andrew Ashong, Wolfgang Haffner, and Acid Mondays, in 2016. The next year, he released the first in a batch of singles that preceded the early-2018 set Shape the Future.

A Word of Science: The 1st & Final Chapter : Allmusic album Review : One year following the entry of "Aftermath" into the British charts, Nightmares on Wax released a first full-length that rivalled any other techno debuts of the time, excepting only its immediate predecessor in the Warp catalog -- LFOs Frequencies. The "Aftermath" blueprint (skeletal bleep techno with the dark undercurrents cropping up in much post-rave techno) is in full force on several tracks, like the follow-up club hit "Dextrous" and the depth-plumbing bass of "A Case of Funk." Elsewhere, though, NoW expand the sound of bleep in several intriguing directions: "Coming Down" represents with paranoid breakbeats wrapped around a minimalist framework; "Playtime" sounds reminiscent of Soul II Soul; "How Ya Doin" is a great old-school shout-out track; and "Mega Donutz" brings a British spin to playful American hip-hop like De La Soul. Unjustly relegated to the history bins (and even more of a relic because of its radical differences from the later NoW catalog), A Word of Science is much more than just the other great early Warp LP.

Smokers Delight : Allmusic album Review : George Evelyns solo step as Nightmares on Wax, Smokers Delight, is a whole delightfully irreducible to its parts, which, as with earlier releases, is largely electro, hip-hop, and soul, with bits of Latin percussion and down-tempo funk thrown in. The album spawned a pair of somewhat forgettable remix EPs and was reissued by TVT immediately upon release.

Carboot Soul : Allmusic album Review : Four years on from Smokers Delight and, fortunately, little has changed for George Evelyns Nightmares on Wax project. While he couldve easily been forgiven for following the nu-beat crowd and inserting a few prescient big beats into the blunted trip-hop formula, its all clear from the opener, "Les Nuits" (a NoW theme of sorts, repeated from Smokers Delight), that at hand is a return to form, not a turn away from the trip-hop style that took such a beating during the late 90s. The lazy-day soul samples driving tracks like "Morse" and "Finer" are perfect examples that instrumental hip-hop doesnt have to resort to the usual producers bag of tricks to make for music leagues beyond the average. Theres also a focus here lacking from previous material; fewer interludes make for a more concentrated listening experience. All in all, Carboot Soul is one of the best arguments yet for the continuing development of trip-hop beyond mere coffee table fare.

Mind Elevation : Allmusic album Review : George Evelyn, the Nightmares on Wax producer who provided the template for 2000-2001s downbeat movement almost a decade before it became the bane of mix album fans, returned just in time with another LP of supremely chilled beats. Unfortunately, though, Mind Elevation isnt the unqualified triumph of Carboot Soul or Smokers Delight, with Evelyn substituting a couple of vocal tracks for the trance-state trip-hop of his previous work. Admittedly, the acid jazz groover "Date with Destiny" and the breezy dub track "70s 80s" prove that Evelyn is surprisingly proficient at crafting a good production for use under a vocal, combining a bare few elements (like the good acid house producer he is) yet weaving them together well. And he can still stop time merely by repeating the right sample and manipulating the bass (as he does perfectly on "Humble" and "Say-Say"). Still, the NoW blueprint of skeletal productions and a clever eye to detail appears to fail him in several places. The faux classical "Bleu My Mind" doesnt even rise to the level of Classical Chillout, and far too many tracks dont even rise above the quality of fair to middling downbeat. Ironically, the fact that there are so many vocals really saves Mind Elevation from being the first bland record by Nightmares on Wax; as it is, theres something to focus on for those few tracks where the old production genius just doesnt seem to be there anymore.

LateNightTales: Nightmares on Wax : Allmusic album Review : Innovative U.K. electronica outfit Nightmares on Wax contributes an excellent disc to the Late Night Tales series, offering a fine mix set that keeps with the funky, downtempo vibe for which the group is known. Elements of jazz, soul, hip-hop, reggae, and electronica rear their heads here on tunes as ostensibly different as Quincy Joness "Listen (What Is It)" to King Koobas spacey "California Suite" to Dusty Springfields groove-driven "Listen." Yet N.O.W.s sequencing and seamless transitions make this a smooth, satisfying, and eminently listenable experience.

In a Space Outta Sound : Allmusic album Review : One of the prime architects of the organic grooves later dubbed trip-hop, Nightmares on Wax deserted their early formula in 2002 only when it became respectable and a crossover appeared most likely. With the air cleared of downtempo cash-ins, producer George Evelyn and producer/keyboardist Robin Taylor-Firth went right back to dub-heavy trip-hop with In a Space Outta Sound. Unsurprisingly, Nightmares on Wax remain among the best at constructing simple grooves with endless depths; their only rival is Massive Attack. The centerpiece is "Damn," seven and a half minutes of gently undulating hip-hop courtesy of a reedy Al Hirt sample (familiar from its use by De La Soul) that eventually flowers into an R&B; jam with a gospel choir. The other highlight is the hypnotic rocksteady groove of "Flip Ya Lid" with vocals from Ricky Rankin. As with past NoW releases, In a Space Outta Sound boasts an emphasis on sound architecture that requires expensive stereo equipment (or bucket loads of narcotics) to fully appreciate.

My Definition : Allmusic album Review : As Nightmares On Wax, the U.K. trip-hop artist George Evelyn has been performing his unique brand of electronica for most of the 1990s. Evelyns contribution to the illuminating and revealing MY DEFINITION series, in which performers curate a set of their prime influences, spans the jazz-funk of the Crusaders "Dont Let It Get You Down," and the bubbling R&B; of the 1960s U.K. pop group the Equals "Funky Like a Train."

Thought So… : Allmusic album Review : Thought So... is a bit of a travelogue for Nightmares on Wax, consisting of tracks recorded in locales ranging from Leeds to Ibiza -- and definitely many places in between. Utilizing an intriguing studio named Camper Van Somewhere (as in, "Recorded on the..."), George Evelyn and Robin Taylor-Firth keep their productions painfully sparse, par for the course in the NoW catalog. Sometimes theyre a little too sparse, specifically the first few tracks, where listeners might get the feeling theyre trapped back in 1996 -- when a naked breakbeat and an occasional effect or sample were the only things necessary for an innovative production. By the time they get to "Bringin It," however, its clear that Evelyn and Taylor-Firth havent lost their touch for finding grooves that transcend terms like lazy and instead achieve superlatives like effortless. There are a few additional moments of greatness ("Moretime" is a clear highlight), but also a few more tracks on the opposite side -- they may make for great background listening, but seem to require altered states to get through while focusing on the music.

Coming Home : Allmusic album Review : After multiple decades in the vanguard of electronic music, George Evelyns Nightmares on Wax has little left to prove, so his volume in the Coming Home mix-album series is appropriately a subdued affair. It has plenty of influences represented, and a few new tracks from associated producers, but as on any great NoW album, the vibe is smooth and the hour-plus runtime is never disturbed by surprises (which can be good or bad depending on the listener). Coming Home has plenty of examples of the NoW-type music: one of the prime examples of Donald Byrds 70s fusion days, island tracks by Jimmy Cliff and Johnny Osbourne, soul from Marvin Gaye and Carla Thomas, and next-generation rap from Roots Manuva and Erykah Badu. It also has several tracks or remixes from NoW themselves, or their associated Wax On label. (These are low-impact groovers with little to focus on but plenty of atmosphere.) Marvin Gayes instrumental of "After the Dance" is especially revealing as an influence.

Feelin’ Good : Allmusic album Review : The first Nightmares on Wax album in five years is George Evelyns most organic and band-oriented release. Beside longtime collaborator Robin Taylor-Firth, Evelyn is joined by a roster of seasoned studio veterans: drummer Wolfgang Haffner, bassist Paul Powell, percussionist Andrew "Shovell" Lovell, vocalist Mozez, and string arranger Sebastian Studnitzky. Its not as if the album was recorded with a strictly old-school method, however; a fair portion of the elements sound producer-driven, heavily manipulated. Stylistically, the album is characteristically diverse for a NoW release, with easy listening, reggae, dub, soul, funk, disco, hip-hop, and downtempo all in the bright mix. Amid some well-made but not particularly stimulating material, the more energetic tracks -- the squelching "Now Is the Time" and the echo-soaked throwback dancefloor groove "Tapestry," the latter of which is almost as gritty as a Theo Parrish "ugly edit" -- stick out the most and leave deeper impressions. Theres also some decent retro-soul in the seemingly Curtis Mayfield-inspired "Give Thx," which has some structural and melodic likeness to "People Get Ready." Appropriately titled, the album exudes warmth but occasionally sounds so relaxed that it seems to lack inspiration -- more suited for a department store soundtrack than vacation listening.

Shape the Future : Allmusic album Review : Daydreams on Wax has seemed like a more suitable name for George Evelyns primary outlet for the majority of its existence. Its more apt than ever for Shape the Future, an album typified by serene, earth-loving optimism, even when romantic heartache is in play. Working without longtime creative partner Robin Taylor-Firth, Evelyn -- helped by a fairly large cast of co-writers, fellow producers, and instrumentalists, including some familiar associates and a string section -- still mixes up downtempo, reggae, and soul from a hip-hop perspective with an easygoing disposition. Theres a deeper concentration on R&B inspirations, exemplified by a ringing and pulsing cover of Little Anns "Deep Shadows" (recorded in 1967 but unheard until three decades later) fronted by Sadie Walker. House kingpin Kenny Dope contributes to two tracks, including "Gotta Smile," a finely woven track that grooves and synthesizes analog and electronic elements like nothing else in Evelyns discography. The headiest trip of all is "Typical," a smart late-60s throwback ballad fronted by Jordan Rakei -- a Marvin Gaye-modeled Australian who didnt exist when Evelyn left his first major imprint on underground dance music.
