Nitin Sawhney
Allmusic Biography : One of the most talented and recognized producers and songwriters within the British electronic and fusion music scene, Nitin Sawhney is also a respected actor, writer, and scriptwriter. Conceiving daring theme combinations of electronica-style beats with gleaming pieces of Asian inspirations driven within trip-hop and jazzy styles, Sawhney delivers exclusive and overwhelming sound pieces, enlightened by his indubitable creative insight. Following an education in the Kent region of England, obscured by the militant presence of racist organizations, Sawhney finally turned to music, therefore aiming to overcome ruling and disquieting racial boundaries. During subsequent years, he went on to study law at Liverpool University before moving to London. It was there that, alongside Sanjeev Bhaskar, he created The Secret Asians, a radio show that eventually evolved into an award-winning TV series.

Although he dedicated most of his time to the TV business, Sawhney never neglected his musical dream. He first joined James Taylor, with whom he played a series of dates across the U.K. alongside Taylors quartet. Following the experiment, Sawhney decided to form his own band, the Jazztones, by that time playing on concerts headlined by DJs like Gilles Peterson. After yet another collaboration, by then with Talvin Singh (with whom he assembled the Tihai Trio), the British creator decided to make it on his own, releasing his debut album, Spirit Dance, on his own label in 1993. A few months later, he signed a contract with Outcaste Records, for which he released one of his most acclaimed recordings, Migration, in 1995. Following a year of incessant work, the album Displacing the Priest arrived in record stores, again demonstrating his exceptional creative skills.

During this period, Sawhney also continued to dedicate part of his time to writing soundtracks for acclaimed TV series and theater plays, or accomplishing remixing works for artists like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. During the following months, Sawhney recorded his long-awaited fourth album, Beyond Skin, offered in late 1999. Coming after an extensive touring season across the U.K. and Europe alongside artists including Sting, Sawhney recorded his fifth studio record; Prophesy arrived in 2001, again achieving glowing reviews from the media. Sawhney remained busy throughout the 2000s, releasing works such as Human, Philtre, Love Undersound, and One Zero as well as mix albums like In the Mind of Nitin Sawhney and Fabriclive.15. By 2015 Sawhney had received numerous awards, including four honorary doctorates, two Ivor Novello nominations, and two U.K. Asian Music Awards; 2015 also marked the release of Sawhneys tenth studio album, Dystopian Dream. Two years later, he received a lifetime achievement acknowledgment from the Ivor Novello Awards, released Live at Ronnie Scotts, and provided the score for the Andy Serkis-directed Breathe.

Beyond Skin : Allmusic album Review : Nitin Sawhneys Beyond Skin works on at least two levels. First, its a plea against racism and war, relating, as Sawhney writes in the liner notes, that ones identity is defined only by oneself -- that identity is "beyond skin." Second, the music is an extremely accomplished blend of classical, drumnbass, jazz, hip-hop, and Indian elements. The albums political statements are seen most clearly in the samples imbedded in the beginning and ending of most tracks. Dealing with nuclear testing and identity, the samples are effective in setting the tone for the songs. The music is quite lush, featuring among other instruments, tablas, pianos, and cellos to equally beautiful effect. The production brings a crystal-clear polish to nearly every element in the mix, whether its the passionate, intense vocals of the Rizwan Qawwali Group on "Homelands" or the stunning, impossibly gorgeous voice of Swati Natekar on "Nadia." The entire album is bathed in eclectic touches which never fail to maintain a poetic, accessible sense of charm and wonder. Rarely has electronic music been crafted with as much substance and style as it has on Beyond Skin. Sawhney travels back and forth between genres quite effortlessly. "Nadia" is as good a drumnbass track as one is likely to find. "Letting Go" suggests the coffee-table trip-pop of Morcheebas Big Calm. "The Pilgrim" is moody, soul-searching hip-hop aided by the wiry vocals of Spek. "Tides" is an excellent, breezy jazz number suggesting Vince Guaraladi in his finest, most experimental moments. "Nostalgia" sounds like a more-relaxed Lamb. "The Conference" is a treat, featuring incredible vocal interplay that simply must be heard to be believed. "Beyond Skin," which opens and closes with a sample of Edward Murrow reading the poem "Now Im become death," is a powerful conclusion to Sawhneys pacifistic vision. Accessible, frightening, emotional, and most-of-all accomplished, Sawhneys Beyond Skin is a remarkable album of rewarding, organic music.

Prophesy : Allmusic album Review : Prophesy sees Nitin Sawhney once again crafting a concept album. But unlike its subtle, pacifistic predecessor, Beyond Skin, Prophesy suffers from its concept to its execution. The very premise of the album is flawed; its an overproduced, synthetic-sounding treatise against technology. Sawhney is certainly no Luddite, as every beat and lush string pattern is infused with computer trickery. Never has a concept album seemed so hypocritical at its very core. Getting past the weak concept, the music lacks the passion and energy of Beyond Skin. Whether Sawhney mimics Enigmas new age mysticism on "Moonrise," Asian Dub Foundations rap-rock hybrid aggression on "Ripping Out Tears," or David Holmes cut-and-paste rawness on the two parts of "Street Guru," he seems to have rushed too hastily around the world and through his own messages outline, making for an awkward result that lacks cohesion, conviction, and interest. The two "Street Guru" songs are perfect examples of where Sawhney went wrong. Artists from Godspeed You Black Emperor to the aforementioned David Holmes have used fire-and-brimstone man-on-the-street rants as samples in their music to dramatic effect. Here, Sawhney has interviewed an angry Chicago taxi driver who spews random profanity about cell phones and the Internet; its not effective, enlightening, or humorous, and the background music doesnt provide an interesting counterpoint for the message. Where Beyond Skin blended exotic sounds and beautiful vocal performances into a snarling beast of emotional, elegant melodicism, Prophesy languishes in weak ideas and an even weaker concept. Prophesy is a disappointing misstep.

Human : Allmusic album Review : Human is a passable entry in the realm of coffee table trip-hop. Nitin Sawhney presents the album as the third piece in a trilogy of concept albums. Beyond Skin got things off to a wonderful start with its thrilling mix of exotic world music and lush electronics, and Prophesy was hampered by a pretentious concept and lackluster songs. Human is merely forgettable; its inoffensive and, in small passages, quite beautiful, but it simply treads familiar ground and suffers from weak songwriting. The concept this time supposedly involves loads of introspection, and according to Sawhney, its themes were inspired by William Blake. Maybe such a premise would be good for a college thesis, but in execution here it merely feels tired and a bit contrived. The best thing that Human has going for it is that Sawhney has chosen some wonderful vocalists to give voice to his message. Indeed, Sawhneys collaborators far outshine his patchwork beats and barely-there melodies. Tina Grace, an aural dead ringer for Lisa Germano, provides some of the albums finest moments. Her tender tones on "Say Hello" bring to mind Jane Siberrys wonderful "Calling All Angels," though Sawhney nearly ruins the mood with an operatic Indian voice wailing in the background near the songs conclusion. Known for his cultural fusion, Sawhney stretches the conceit perhaps too far on Human. Sawhneys attempt to mix Indian and English voices is at least more successful on "Fragile Wind," where Grace and Jayanta Bose prove to be wonderful foils in their call and response, as well as in their harmonizing. Jacob Golden and the honey-voiced Reena Bhardwaj are an equally sublime mix on "Falling Angels," which sounds remarkably like Aimee Mann fronting Alpha. Outside these songs, Sawhney stumbles musically, offering lethargic sound collages, bland techno raves, vainglorious out-of-place samples of Martin Luther King Jr. and Margaret Thatcher, and lyrics that only a mother could love. A particularly cringe-worthy passage from "Waiting (O Mistress Mine)" unfolds as, "what is love, tis not hereafter, present mirth hath present laughter, whats to come, still unsure." Sawhney has proven himself a better songwriter in the past, but Human is weighed down by many of the same faults as Prophesy. One cant help but wonder if either Sawhney or V2 rushed this album to its release, or if Sawhney is resting on his laurels.
