The Saints | ||
Allmusic Biography : Roaring out of Brisbane, Australia in 1977 with the punk-era classic "(Im) Stranded," the Saints, despite going through numerous incarnations, were a part of rock & roll for more than 20 years, thanks mainly to their indefatigable leader (and founder), Chris Bailey. Although they didnt play anything that passes for punk rock after about 1978, and despite extended dormant periods, the Saints never officially broke up, and Bailey always seemed to have another version of the band and another record ready to release. Saints fans generally fall into two distinct camps: the punk-era fans (up to about 1980) and the mature pop fans, which for American audiences begins with the release of All Fools Day in 1987. After co-founder Ed Kuepper left in 1979 and the band became Baileys show, the twists and turns he took them through (horns, folk/blues arrangements, as well his numerous solo excursions) produced some good music, but it was mostly scattershot and lacked focus, though Bailey did record two fine records with the late-80s incarnation of the band. Punk-era Saints were exactly what youd expect: buzzsaw guitars, Baileys pissed-off, nasal vocals, and locomotive rhythms supplied by bassist Kym Bradshaw and drummer Ivor Hay. After the LP (Im) Stranded became a modest hit in England, the follow-up record, Eternally Yours, showed some changes (more varied tempos, acoustic guitars) that would set the stage for their third record, Prehistoric Sounds, which combined horn arrangements into a punk-ish sort of R&B.; It was at this point that the Saints were beginning to change enough to not resemble the band they were just a scant two years earlier. Kuepper left to form the arty Laughing Clowns and eventually made a number of records as a solo act. Bailey, however, got to keep the name the Saints and soldiered on, taking time here and there to record his own solo records. To most Americans, the Saints were a dead issue, if they were still an issue at all. (Im) Stranded caught on with punk aficionados, but hardly anyone else; Eternally Yours came and went without a trace; and Prehistoric Sounds was never domestically released (neither were any of the post-Kuepper Saints records of the early 80s). So, by the time All Fools Day was released in 1987, there were many who thought the Saints were a brand-new band, and they were right. Gone were the rapid-fire guitar sound and bellowing vocals, replaced by sophisticated pop arrangements and more technically accomplished singing. The music was strong, intelligent pop that was better than much of the late-80s "new wave." The next LP, Prodigal Son, wasnt as good, but did nothing to hurt the reputation of the "new" Saints. Oddly enough, Kuepper got together with Celibate Rifles guitarists Kent Steedman and Dave Morris and performed under the name the Aints. Gigging in Sydney, they generally played a set of (Im) Stranded-era material and even recorded a couple of lo-fi live discs, all done for laughs. It took almost a decade, however, for the next Saints (meaning Bailey plus others) album, 1997s Howling, to come out. The record portrayed a louder, edgier band than what had been seen on Prodigal Son, and was followed soon after by Everybody Knows the Monkey. In 2002, Spit the Blues Out was released, and three years later, with the Churchs guitarist Marty Willson-Piper on board, the Saints issued the rocking Nothing Is Straight in My House, followed by Imperious Delerium (without Willson-Piper) in 2006. The original members of the group were reunited in 2007 for some shows, presumably to boost sales of a box set titled The Greatest Cowboy Movie Never Made; otherwise, the Saints remained relatively quiet for the remainder of the decade. In 2012, Bailey teamed up with Barrington Francis and Peter Wilkinson to record a new Saints album, King of the Sun. When the album was issued in the U.K. and the U.S. in 2014, it was accompanied by a bonus disc, King of the Midnight Sun, featuring the same set of songs but re-recorded in a rougher and rowdier fashion.

(I’m) Stranded : Allmusic album Review : The Saints were to Australia what the Sex Pistols were to Britain and the Ramones to America. Picking up the germ planted by the defunct Stooges, MC5, Velvet Underground, and New York Dolls, the Saints sparked the Far East punk rock movement with a blasting, blistering, scorching sound no one had heard before. Moreover, the Saints were blitzing the unsuspecting in their home of Brisbane in 1973, long before the Sex Pistols or the Ramones had even begun. Australians today hold the Saints in greater reverence than any rock band in its history, save for the Easybeats. After their incendiary, self-released debut 7" single "(Im) Stranded" b/w "No Time" blew minds of a raving British press on import in 1976, subsequent sales of the single proved to the industry that the upstart punk movement was in fact commercially viable. The Saints pocketed a worldwide deal with EMI Australia, who rush-released "(Im) Stranded" in Australia and Britain (and in the U.S., on the heavyweight punk label of the time, Sire Records) to capitalize on the new trend. This first LP was actually nothing but eight rough-and-raw demo tracks the band had no intention of releasing, plus the two sides of the much better, cleaner-sounding single. The heavy, buzzing racket on the eight demo tracks borders on unintelligible, theyre so cheaply recorded, but nothing can stop a collection of cracklers this intense, with two absolutely astounding, blues-heavy ballads thrown in for great balance -- "Messin with the Kid" and "Story of Love" drip with genuine, bratty soul. Of the hard-fast tracks, even todays punk fans are amazed at the sheer tenacity and outright fire of "Nights in Venice," "One Way Street," and "Erotic Neurotic." Hear history burning.

Eternally Yours : Allmusic album Review : While the into-the-wind blare of the title cut was what people remembered best, the Saints first album, (Im) Stranded, had a lot more musical variety than it was generally given credit for in 1977, and the band stayed much farther from the standard punk template (which had solidified with remarkable speed in the wake of the Sex Pistols) on their second LP, Eternally Yours. For their sophomore outing, the Saints threw actual tempo changes, horn charts, keyboards, and R&B; accents into the mix, which didnt endear them to punk purists, who predictably didnt recognize that these changes had only strengthened the bands sound. Anyone looking for blazing 4/4 punk will find it in "Lost and Found" and "Private Affair," but the horn-fueled "Know Your Product" and "Orstralia" proved that punk could also sound soulful (Rocket from the Crypt owe their entire career to these cuts); the moody "A Minor Aversion," "Untitled," and "Memories Are Made of This" proved the Saints could slow it down and still sound tough and impassioned; and "This Perfect Day" is quite possibly the greatest song this band would ever record -- Chris Baileys sneer of "Its so funny I cant laugh" is alone worth the price of admission. While Eternally Yours is a bit less consistent than (Im) Stranded, the material is first-rate, the band sounds better than ever, and the approach suggests the pop-smart eclecticism of the bands mid-80s period fused with the muscle and ferocity of their debut. Maybe Eternally Yours didnt sound like a standard-issue punk album in 1978, but its stood the test of time much better than most of the work of punks first graduating class.

Prehistoric Sounds : Allmusic album Review : With Prehistoric Sounds (the last record of the bands original lineup), the Saints provide the textbook by which to make a great rock record where horns play as much of a role as guitar. Further extracting themselves from the limitations of punk, the band retains the attitude and turns it into a smart, bluesy, gutsy combination of controlled power. Theres more dip in the hip and additional swagger. The days of "(Im) Stranded" might have been long gone, but the varied tempos and sophisticated songwriting dont sacrifice the bands intensity at all. The horns are the real treat, a central element to the records solidity. They dont make the Saints sound like Chicago, and they dont make them sound like a faux 70s soul band -- they dont make them sound like the Doors of "Touch Me" or the Bowie of Young Americans, either. Whether used for the basis or just punctuation of each song, the tasteful use of saxophones is a genuine masterstroke. The dynamic "Brisbane (Security City)" -- which is like an update of the Stooges "1969" and "1970" in terms of subject matter -- is the high point. After two minutes of Chris Baileys Iggy-like lament on his hometown, the medium tempo shifts into high gear, thanks to rhythmic overdrive, charged guitars, and (of course) the ubiquitous horns. Other bright spots include "Every Days a Holiday, Every Nights a Party" and an energetic cover of Otis Reddings "Security," where Bailey sounds so much like a young Van Morrison that its scary.

The Monkey Puzzle : Allmusic album Review : The Monkey Puzzle, the Saints first full-length album after the departure of founding guitarist/songwriter Ed Kuepper, is quite different from the first three Saints LPs -- which were all different from each other anyway -- but holds up well to the test of time. Instead of the abrasive punk or Memphisy sound of earlier records, Monkey Puzzles jangly rock hints at the direction bands like R.E.M. took mid-80s college rock. Lead singer Chris Baileys distinctive, resonant voice shines on the gorgeous "Lets Pretend," the very Byrdsy "Always," and the incendiary "Simple Love." The Australian version also includes the classic B-side, "In the Mirror," with its highly memorable bass intro and astounding hooks, and a wonderfully sloppy and loose cover of Larry Williams "Dizzy Miss Lizzy." Elsewhere, the fare is more conventional rock, albeit with chiming guitar, great songs, and singing. Barrington Francis jangly guitar, original drummer Ivor Hay, and bassist Janine Hall give the band an entirely new dimension. On its release, Monkey Puzzle shocked fans with its maturity; though it was made by 21-year-old punk, most other 21-year-old punks thought it was too much like regular rock -- a sin in 1981. Since it wasnt released in the U.S. or England, not many people heard it anyway. Ironically, a few years later, bands like Guadalcanal Diary and the Connells came to the forefront using a very similar approach. Of course, by then Bailey had moved into a whole new musical space. Highly recommended.

A Little Madness to Be Free : Allmusic album Review : On this album, the Saints shift gears yet again. A Little Madness to Be Free takes the band (which was actually just a vehicle for singer Chris Bailey at this point) in a denser, more layered direction. This time, brass and strings dominate with lush acoustic guitars underneath. Obviously, any trace of the punk band that was, is gone. The power, however, remains. Like its follow-up, the devastating All Fools Day, this record explores the depths of irony, and the ironies of depth. Through exploration of the soul there is (musically at least) redemption. From the incredibly beautiful photo of a bay at sunset on the album cover to the opening track "Down the Drain," the tone is set. "Still I think its better to stand out in the rain/ then go slipping on down the drain," Bailey sings. A melancholy rainy day vibe so damn gray its vibrant; you cant help but be transported by it. This is the kind of album that makes you think about stuff. Stuff youd rather not think about, like, "what the hell have I done with my life?" Somehow there is catharsis, so the end result is not an overall bummer. The somber and powerful "Photograph" tells of a lost love, and the beautiful, "Angels" will leave you singing along ("we cant waste another day") to the point of wanting to play the track again. The album concludes with one of Baileys all-time classic songs, "Ghostships," a track so amazing he went and put it on several more albums, re-recording it twice. While electric guitars are not the centerpiece of the sound here, the layers make for an equally powerful experience. Surprisingly, there are really no keyboards to speak of, which is very unusual for a non-guitar rock album. By this point in his career, Bailey had come into his own as an arranger and it really shows. Certainly one of their most obscure discs, but ultimately as rewarding as their classics Im Stranded, Eternally Yours, and All Fools Day.

All Fools Day : Allmusic album Review : Call this the second coming of the Saints, but the only thing this record has in common with previous Saints recordings is Chris Bailey. Still, its a sharp, tuneful, and (ahem) mature work that shows Baileys increasing confidence as a singer and songwriter. One listen to songs as grabbing as "Celtic Ballad" or the great "Just Like Fire Would" (which is kind of a neat pun) will convince you that despite the differences, the new Saints were a good band for completely different reasons than the old Saints.

Prodigal Son : Allmusic album Review : Chris Bailey returns with another batch of catchy rock songs on Prodigal Son, though it rarely reaches the heights of his last album, All Fools Day. In retrospect, Hugh Jones ornate production brought out the best in Baileys songwriting and gave each song its own identity, something that many of the songs here struggle to establish. There are some standout tracks, like the powerful "Ghost Ships," the acoustic "Shipwreck," the bouncy "Sold Out," and a spirited cover of the Easybeats "Music Goes Round My Head" (produced by Harry Vanda and George Young). But most of the material is simply intelligent rock with a slight edge, similar to the work of Graham Parker (e.g., "Massacre") and producing the same pleasant and slightly prickly results. A few songs openly question the cost of stardom, suggesting that Bailey may have felt some pressure to duplicate the success of his last effort. To his credit, Prodigal Son is a harsher record in many ways, revealing his punk roots in vocals that kick up a certain amount of surliness. The opening track, "Grain of Sand," remains one of his more popular songs, even if its not appreciably better than any number of cuts on the album. And the stripped-down production lends a raw, honest quality to songs like "Tomorrow" and "Stay," two of the albums better tracks. Despite more lineup changes (original drummer Ivor Hay is noticeably absent), Chris Bailey keeps the Saints afloat with another good album, which is a success in itself.

Howling : Allmusic album Review : For the first time in over a decade, gargantuan-voiced singer Chris Bailey revives the famed Saints name to make a rock & roll record after a string of solo releases, the previous two of which were beautiful, melancholic, and wonderfully depressed, yet hushed-gilded confessional. And unlike the last Saints outing, 1988s OK but badly over-produced Prodigal Son, Bailey is long past trying to craft a more guitar rawk sound to crack an American market that no longer knows he exists. Howling is much louder, edgy, and nervous. Also, unlike the 1979-1988 Saints, Bailey here eschews his old mates for an new lineup, making this Saints Mach III. The results are mixed, especially at first, but at their best are crackling and exciting. And with repeated listens, Baileys knack for a well-developed, melodic tune is revealed, as are a couple of thunderous, paranoid, wild, and totally cracked songs that sound like Bailey has turned psychopathic. Three acoustic-based tracks are also a good touch, revisiting the sumptuous territory of Savage Entertainment and 54 Days. Besides, any record that makes Bailey howl as of old, unlike his 90s solo work, is bound to have one revelatory moment after another, reminding one of the explosive voice that once bellowed and yowled its way through such intense heart-pounders as "(Im) Stranded," "This Perfect Day," "Know Your Product," "Casablanca," "Ghost Ships," and "Just Like Fire Would." One senses Bailey can ultimately do better than this, that he can find the spark of complete brilliance that visited not only his Kuepper-era 70s heights, but his twin 80s masterpieces, A Little Madness to Be Free and All Fools Day. But, like The Monkey Puzzle and Out in the Jungle, this is a no-nonsense kick-bucket rocking record, and a fine, unexpected surprise at that.

Wild About You (1976-1978) : Allmusic album Review : The Australian compilation Wild About You (1976-1978) is the first place to go for the Saints in more ways than one. The thorough, double-disc anthology exhaustively includes the Australian bands first three records (1977s (Im) Stranded and 1978s Prehistoric Sounds and Eternally Yours), as well as every stray EP and single track recorded by the Ed Kuepper/Chris Bailey era of the Saints -- the period that spawned the bands best material. To lure the rabid fans, four previously unissued recordings are included. The results of the vault looting arent anywhere near the levels of "(Im) Stranded" or "Brisbane (Security City)," but they werent unearthed just to take advantage of the consumer, either. Additionally, the package is dolled up with scads of photos and extensive liner notes provided by numerous sources. Its odd that such a collection would surface in close proximity to the individual U.K. reissues of (Im) Stranded and Eternally Yours, but this is the kind of package that appeals to beginners and longtime fans. At two discs, the price isnt much of a financial risk for the newbie, and the scope of the material is too grand to be ignored by the familiar. As far as punk and post-punk are considered, this is a rather essential document.

Nothing Is Straight in My House : Allmusic album Review : Since 1997s Howling, Chris Bailey has been working hard to re-establish the Saintss reputation as a tough, hard-edged rock & roll band after a string of pop-oriented albums in the 1980s, and 2005s Nothing Is Straight in My House takes a further step in the right direction by pairing Bailey with one of the best guitarists in Australian rock, Marty Willson-Piper of the Church. While Nothing Is Straight in My House is a far cry from the punk-flavored assault of (Im) Stranded, the pounding opening salvo of "Porno Movies" shows Willson-Piper knows how to confidently make with the crunch, while drummer Pete Wilkinson and bassist Caspar Wijnberg set up a menacing throb in the background. While Bailey does throw in a few mid-tempo numbers along the way, such as the folk-rock-influenced "I Couldnt Help Myself" and "Garden Dark," the good news is "Bang On," "Paint the Town Electric," and "Nylon Pirates" find the Saints rocking out with smarts, swagger, and supreme confidence, and Chris Bailey is once again producing the sort of sneering vocals that made him a contender back in the day. Bailey is also writing up to his best standard on this set, and while the overly clean production sometimes holds the band back, the fact is this album rocks, and when it comes to the Saints, thats always good news. Great stuff.

The Greatest Cowboy Movie Never Made : Allmusic album Review : After the commercial failure of the Saints third album, 1978s Prehistoric Sounds, EMI gave the band their walking papers and guitarist Ed Kuepper and drummer Ivor Hay decided to pack it in and leave London to return home to Australia. Singer and guitarist Chris Bailey, however, wasnt about to throw in the towel, and with Kueppers blessings he assembled a new version of the Saints and began the long, hard struggle to re-establish the group as one of the worlds great rock bands. Baileys first three albums with his new Saints are collected in The Greatest Cowboy Movie Never Made, a box set includes the LPs The Monkey Puzzle, Out in the Jungle... and A Little Madness to Be Free in their entirety, as well as the Paralytic Tonight Dublin Tomorrow EP and an unreleased live set. Folks looking for a four-disc onslaught of old-school punk in the manner of (Im) Stranded will be disappointed, but given the eclecticism the Saints displayed on their first three albums, the blend of pop melodies, soul accents and rock & roll passion Bailey and his bandmates summon on the studio material certainly fits the spirit if not the letter of the bands original intentions, and one thing that remains consistent throughout is the excellence of Baileys singing, which is smart, forceful and original throughout, as well as his considerable gifts as a songwriter. And folks who want to hear Bailey rock out are rewarded with disc four, titled "A Gallon of Rum Is a Harsh Mistress the Morning After: Live in Oz," a warts-and-all recording of a well-oiled and highly energetic show in Sydney from 1981 that features classic songs from the Kuepper-era Saints as well as Baileys more recent tunes. The only disadvantage to this set is that some hardcore Saints fans may already have the three albums included and will have to pony for them a second time to get the live CD, though given the obscurity of this material (especially in North America), that isnt terribly likely, and this is a fine package for fans of one of the more unpredictable (yet satisfying) groups of their era.

Imperious Delirium : Allmusic album Review : Marty Willson-Pipers tenure with the Saints was apparently a brief one; after adding his estimable guitar prowess to 2005s Nothing Is Straight in My House, the former Church axeman is absent from 2007s Imperious Delirium, with the Saints reconfigured as a scrappy power trio this time out. Chris Baileys straightforward, elemental guitar figures recall the nervy tone of the bands superb early work, though the songs are wordier and less muscular than the stuff on (Im) Stranded or Eternally Yours, and Baileys fretwork lacks the ferocity of Ed Kueppers blistering tone on those pioneering LPs. Despite that, Imperious Delirium still demonstrates that the Saints have reclaimed their status as a real rock band after years of Baileys pop-oriented efforts. With bassist Caspar Wijnberg and drummer Peter Wilkinson offering lean but forceful backing, Bailey sings with real conviction on these 11 songs, and the swagger of "Je Fu**in TAime," the potent groove of "Declare War," and the punk-wise sneer of "Drunk in Babylon" show he hasnt lost either the sneer or the smarts of his most memorable period. Wijnberg recorded and mixed this set along with playing bass, and his studiocraft is this records Achilles heel -- while the rhythm section sounds fine, Baileys guitar lacks the force and definition it needs to be effective, and while his vocals sound good, they really ought to be higher up in the mix. With a bit more care given to the production, Imperious Delirium could have been a better and more aggressive record, but as it is, its still a reminder that Chris Bailey is still a major talent, and the Saints remain a rock band to be reckoned with. Hopefully their next album will offer more hard evidence to back this up.
