The Zombies | ||
Allmusic Biography : Aside from the Beatles and perhaps the Beach Boys, no mid-60s rock group wrote melodies as gorgeous as those of the Zombies. Dominated by Colin Blunstones breathy vocals, choral backup harmonies, and Rod Argents shining jazz- and classical-influenced organ and piano, the band sounded utterly unique for its era. Indeed, the Zombies material -- penned by either Argent or guitarist Chris White, with unexpected shifts from major to minor keys -- was perhaps too adventurous for the singles market. To this day, theyre known primarily for their three big hit singles, "Shes Not There" (1964), "Tell Her No" (1965), and "Time of the Season" (1969). Most listeners remain unaware that the group maintained a remarkably high quality of work for several years. The Zombies formed in the London suburb of St. Albans in the early 60s, and didnt actually entertain serious professional ambitions until they won a local contest, the prize being an opportunity to record a demo for consideration at major labels. Argents composition "Shes Not There" got them a deal with Decca, and the song ended up being their debut release. It was a remarkably confident and original first-time effort, with a great minor melody and the organ, harmonies, and urgent, almost neurotic vocals that would typify much of their work. It did well enough in Britain (making the Top 20), but did even better in the States, where it went to number two. In fact, throughout their career, the Zombies would experience a lot more success across the waters than they did at home. In early 1965, another piece of classic British Invasion pop, "Tell Her No," went into the Top Ten. Yet that was as much Top 40 success as the group would have for several years. The tragedy was that throughout 1965 and 1966, the Zombies released a string of equally fine, intricately arranged singles that flopped commercially, at a time in which the chart success of 45s was a lot more important to sustain a bands livelihood than it would be a few years down the road. "Remember When I Loved Her," "I Want You Back Again," "Indication," "Shes Coming Home," "Whenever Youre Ready," "Gotta Get a Hold of Myself," "I Must Move," "Remember You," "Just Out of Reach," "How We Were Before" -- all are lost classics, some relegated to B-sides that went virtually unheard, all showing the group eager to try new ideas and expand its approaches. Whats worse, the lack of a big single denied the group opportunities to record albums -- only one LP, rushed out to capitalize on the success of "Shes Not There," would appear before 1968. Their failure to achieve more widespread success is a bit mystifying, perhaps explained by a few factors. While undeniably pop-based, their original compositions and arrangements were in some senses too adventurous for the radio. "Indication," for instance, winds down with a lengthy, torturous swirl of bitter organ solos and wordless, windblown vocals; "Remember When I Loved Her," despite its beautiful melody, has downbeat lyrics that are almost morbid; "I Want You Back Again" is arranged like a jazz waltz, with the sorts of sudden stops, tempo shifts, and lengthy minor organ solos found in a lot of their tunes. The Zombies were also, perhaps unfairly, saddled with a somewhat square image; much was made of their formidable scholastic record, and they most definitely did not align themselves with the R&B-based; school of British bands, preferring more subtle and tuneful territory. By 1967, the group hadnt had a hit for quite some time, and reckoned it was time to pack it in. Their Decca contract expired early in the year, and the Zombies signed with CBS for one last album, knowing before the sessions that it was to be their last. A limited budget precluded the use of many session musicians, which actually worked to the Zombies advantage, as they became among the first to utilize the then-novel Mellotron to emulate strings and horns. Odessey and Oracle was their only cohesive full-length platter (the first album was largely pasted together from singles and covers). A near-masterpiece of pop/psychedelia, it showed the group reaching new levels of sophistication in composition and performance, finally branching out beyond strictly romantic themes into more varied lyrical territory. The album passed virtually unnoticed in Britain, and was only released in the States after some lobbying from Al Kooper. By that time it was 1968, and the group had split for good. The Zombies had been defunct for some time when one of the tracks from Odessey, "Time of the Season," was released as a single, almost as an afterthought. It took off in early 1969 to become their biggest hit, but the members resisted temptations to re-form, leading to a couple of bizarre tours in the late 60s by bogus "Zombies" with no relation to the original group. By this time, Rod Argent was already recording as the leader of Argent, which went in a harder rock direction than the Zombies. After a spell as an insurance clerk, Colin Blunstone had some success (more in Britain than America) in the early 70s as a solo vocalist, with material that often amounted to soft rock variations on the Zombies sound. Much more influential than their commercial success would indicate, echoes of the Zombies innovations can be heard in the Doors, the Byrds, the Left Banke, the Kinks, and many others. After a long period during which most of their work was out of print, virtually all of their recordings have been restored to availability on CD. Blunstone and Argent reunited for an album, Out of the Shadows, and toured together in 2003 as Blunstone & Argent, playing live shows into 2004 when they began gigging again as the Zombies, with an album and DVD set, Live at the Bloomsbury Theatre, appearing under that name in 2005. To honor the 40th anniversary of Odessey and Oracle, the four surviving original members of the group reunited for a series of three concerts at Londons Shepherds Bush Empire Theatre in March of 2008, with a CD and DVD set of the shows hitting the market later that summer. A new studio album, Breathe Out, Breathe In, attributed to the Zombies featuring Colin Blunstone & Rod Argent, appeared in 2011. The moniker was pared down to the Zombies for 2015s Still Got That Hunger, an album of new tunes from a lineup anchored by Argent and Blunstone and featuring guitarist Tom Toomey, bassist Jim Rodford, and drummer Steve Rodford. The Still Got That Hunger lineup toured in tandem with the Argent, Blunstone, White, and Grundy edition, presenting a show in which the original members performed Odessey and Oracle in full, followed by a set of new material from the most recent lineup.

Begin Here : Allmusic album Review : The Zombies were one of the best and most original pop groups to rise from the British Beat scene of the early to mid-60s, with striking harmonies, gorgeous melodies, a gifted and nuanced lead singer in Colin Blunstone, and a keyboard player, Rod Argent, who was just as comfortable with jazz and blues as he was with rock, and not afraid to blend his influences in the course of a song. Given all this, the Zombies first album, 1965s Begin Here, is a bit of a disappointment; while its an inarguably fine set of songs, half of the tunes are covers, mostly of R&B standards, and while the band plays them with genuine passion and impressive skill, the truth is there were plenty of bands on the U.K. Beat scene who could play "I Got My Mojo Working," "Road Runner," or "Youve Really Got a Hold on Me" at least as well if not better. Its on the originals, written by Argent and guitarist Chris White, where one hears what really made the Zombies special. "Shes Not There" was an international hit, and the slightly ominous rumble of Argents electric piano, the emphatic lead vocal from Blunstone, and the melodic lift of the harmonies give it a sound not quite like anyone else around at the time, while "I Cant Make Up My Mind" and "I Dont Want to Know" are similarly well-crafted and thoughtful. "Woman" and "What More Can I Do" are hard-driving R&B numbers that allow the groups individual personality to shine through (especially in Argent and Whites forceful instrumental work), and "I Remember When I Loved Her" is a moody and atmospheric piece that anticipates the tone of the groups masterful final album Odessey and Oracle. Given the wealth of fine original tunes that the Zombies released on various non-LP singles and EPs during this period, its a shame that so much of Begin Here was given over to covers; its still a fine album and certainly better than what most of their peers had to offer in 1965, but what could have been an achievement on a par with the Kinks Face to Face or the Beatles Rubber Soul ended up being something quite good instead of an unqualified triumph.

The Zombies : Allmusic album Review : After the double-sided hit single "Shes Not There" b/w "You Make Me Feel Good" topped the U.S. charts in the fall of 1964, Parrot Records quickly culled together this LP for 1965 release. The dozen tracks were taken from material the Zombies cut for their 1965 U.K. debut album, Begin Here. Also included are "Its Alright With Me" and "Sometimes" from the combos self-titled EP. Regardless of presentation, The Zombies (Featuring Shes Not There and Tell Her No) aptly portrays the quintet of Chris White (bass), Rod Argent (keyboards/vocals), Colin Blunstone (guitar/vocals), Paul Atkinson (guitar), and Hugh Grundy (drums) in terms of the bands fresh blend of intelligent Brit-pop. Their efforts are equally laudable on the strength of originals such as "Tell Her No" and "What More Can I Do" as they are on the blue-eyed soulful medley interpretation of the Miracles "Youve Really Got a Hold on Me" with Sam Cookes "Bring It on Home to Me." This is stylistically complemented by the R&B rave-up on Muddy Waters "I Got My Mojo Working" and the ultra hip jazzy arrangement of the Gershwin standard "Summertime." The Zombies obvious appreciation for adeptly crafted melodies and rich vocal harmonies likewise made them favorites of pop fans as well as more discerning listeners. "Work n Play" is an instrumental credited to producer Ken Jones. Initially, the piece was simply used to fill out the long-player. That was until the tune was more fully developed by the band, and under the direction of Argents fiery lead harmonica they turn the proposed filler into a rock & roll killer. Those wishing to obtain a more thorough examination of this era are directed to the decidedly more thorough 2001 Repertoire reissue of Begin Here or the "final word" four-disc Zombie Heaven anthology from 1997.

Odessey and Oracle : Allmusic album Review : Odessey and Oracle was one of the flukiest (and best) albums of the 1960s, and one of the most enduring long players to come out of the entire British psychedelic boom, mixing trippy melodies, ornate choruses, and lush Mellotron sounds with a solid hard rock base. But it was overlooked completely in England and barely got out in America (with a big push by Al Kooper, who was then a Columbia Records producer); and it was neglected in the U.S. until the single "Time of the Season," culled from the album, topped the charts nearly two years after it was recorded, by which time the group was long disbanded. Ironically, at the time of its recording in the summer of 1967, permanency was not much on the minds of the bandmembers. Odessey and Oracle was intended as a final statement, a bold last hurrah, having worked hard for three years only to see the quality of their gigs decline as the hits stopped coming. The results are consistently pleasing, surprising, and challenging: "Hung Up on a Dream" and "Changes" are some of the most powerful psychedelic pop/rock ever heard out of England, with a solid rhythm section, a hot Mellotron sound, and chiming, hard guitar, as well as highly melodic piano. "Changes" also benefits from radiant singing. "This Will Be Our Year" makes use of trumpets (one of the very few instances of real overdubbing) in a manner reminiscent of "Penny Lane"; and then theres "Time of the Season," the most well-known song in their output and a white soul classic. Not all of the album is that inspired, but its all consistently interesting and very good listening, and superior to most other psychedelic albums this side of the Beatles best and Pink Floyds early work. Indeed, the only complaint one might have about the original LP is its relatively short running time, barely over 30 minutes, but even thats refreshing in an era where most musicians took their time making their point.

Time of the Zombies : Allmusic album Review : Were the Zombies the greatest British Invasion band aside from the Beatles and the Stones? That used to be a far-fetched thought/question until a lot of artists like Eric Matthews and Jason Faulkner began to ape their style in the 1990s. Since then, in the mid-1990s, Zombie Heaven, an all-encompassing 4-CD box set was released. But, for a long time, this record, Time Of The Zombies, was about the only place where you could get an excellent, complete overview of their recorded output. Aside from the complete Odessay And Oracle album, this two-LP set contains the best of their 1964-1966 records. These tracks such as "I Remember You," "Walking In The Sun," "Tell Her No," "Shes Not There" and numerous others, are collected here, and show you 28 reasons why they should be mentioned in the same breath as The Beatles.

Live on the BBC : Allmusic album Review : While this compilation of 14 BBC airshots has barely different versions of their self-penned singles "Tell Her No," "Just Out of Reach," and "Whenever Youre Ready," it concentrates on their covers of a surprisingly wide array of soul and R&B; standards that the group never released on record. Unlike, say, the Stones, the Zombies were much more noted for their compositional prowess than their original interpretations of American rock and soul; the groups tasteful, melodic restraint could make them sound twee and out of their depth when they tackled chestnuts like "Ive Got My Mojo Working" on their first LP. But the covers here, emphasizing the bands harmonies and Rod Argents keyboards, are reasonably well done. Includes songs originally performed by the Isley Brothers, Aretha Franklin, Gene Vincent, the Supremes, Curtis Mayfield, and others, some of them quite obscure even in their original incarnations. Excellent sound rounds off an album that gives some unexpected insight into the Zombies influences.

The Singles A's & B's : Allmusic album Review : This presents, in chronological sequence, both sides of all 14 of the Zombies British singles. The Zombies were one of the most consistent British 60s bands, so its no surprise that this is a great compilation, containing nothing mediocre and little thats even average. In addition to the three well-known hits "Shes Not There," "Tell Her No," and "Time of the Season" (all present), theres an abundance of gems from B-sides and flop singles: "I Must Move," "Indication," "Shes Coming Home," "Gotta Get a Hold of Myself," and "Beechwood Park" are just the very best of those. However, the absence of the great U.S.-only 1965 single "I Want You Back Again"/"I Remember When I Loved Her" and, to a lesser degree, some standout LP-only tracks (particularly "Changes" from Odessey & Oracle) prevents this from being the definitive single-disc best-of.

I Love You : Allmusic album Review : For reasons that have probably long vanished into the bureaucratic paper shredder, this 1966 Zombies album was issued only in Continental Europe and Asia. In both the U.S. and U.K., there would be no Zombies full-lengths between 1965 (when varying versions of a debut LP appeared in each territory) and their 1968 finale, Odessey & Oracle. I Love You was not an album of material otherwise unavailable in the U.S. or U.K., however, but a collection of singles and LP tracks, all of which had already made it onto the U.S. or U.K. markets in some form, though most of them were taken from 45s that hadnt made it onto LP in either country. If you were a rock & roll fan traveling abroad in the 60s, then, it was quite a find, containing as it did numerous fine obscure mid-60s flop singles and B-sides, some of which rate among the Zombies finest work ("Indication," "Gotta Get a Hold of Myself," and "How We Were Before," for starters). Indeed, at the time, "Shes Not There" was the only really commonly circulated track, and though "The Way I Feel Inside" had been on their British debut LP, it hadnt been released in the States. The album has very good music, for sure. But ultimately it would be a redundant item in the Zombies collection, save for hardcore collectors, as all of the tracks have been subsequently reissued on numerous other compilations -- the Zombie Heaven box set, for example, including every last one of them. If you love the Zombies enough to treasure this music, theres a good chance you already have all or virtually all of these tracks.

New World : Allmusic album Review : Calling New World (1993) a Zombies effort is as erroneous as portraying No Quarter: Jimmy Page & Robert Plant (2001) as a Led Zeppelin album, as in both cases, principal components are glaringly absent. On this disc, co-founders Rod Argent (vocals/keyboards) and Paul Atkinson (guitar/vocals) are listed not as part of the band, but rather "special guests." Present and accounted for from the initial combo are Chris White (bass/vocals), Colin Blunstone (vocals), and Hugh Grundy (drums). Although White and Blunstone attempt to pick up the slack in the wake of Argents minimal involvement, their choice of Sebastian Santa Maria (keyboards/guitar/vocals) is a less than suitable substitute for the missing co-founder. Not surprisingly, while both White and Blunstone are excellent songwriters, much of the material lacks the quirky and jazzy influence that Argent infused into the Zombies sound. That said, the cuts on New World (1991) are not inferior -- either in composition or execution. They simply are not the Zombies. The opener and title track, "New World (My America)" is one of Whites better cuts, with a strong backbeat and the typical tension and release that became trademarks of his vintage sound. "You Make Me Feel Good," "I Love You," and "Beechwood Park" -- Whites marquee noir-edged pop style conjured up on "Lula Lula" similarly hearkens back to "Let Me Be," with understated and intimate vocals. An alternate version of the former is available as a bonus side, under what is presumably the working name "Hold My Hand." The Blunstone contributions are equally enjoyable, with the ballad "Losing You," and the mid-tempo rocker, "Love Conquers All" his strongest showings. Casual enthusiasts should note the remake of "Time of the Season," which is the only number to feature Argent. The update can barely be measured against the original, and pales in comparison. In 2003, New World debuted on CD with a pair of supplementary sides, the previously mentioned "Hold My Hand," as well as "When My Boat Comes In," another White-penned song.

The EP Collection : Allmusic album Review : The Zombies EP Collection, from the See for Miles label, contains the British Invasion bands biggest hits from 1964 through 1966, including "Tell Her No," "Time of the Season," and, in both mono and stereo, "Shes Not There." While this collection does an effective job chronicling the hits, Big Beats 2000 release The Singles Collection: As & Bs, 1964-1969 is superior as it goes further into their catalog and contains "Care of Cell 44," "Beechwood Park," "Friends of Mine," and "Maybe After Hes Gone" taken from their 1968 masterpiece Odessey and Oracle.

Greatest Hits Greatest Recordings : Allmusic album Review : Since so many budget-priced compilations of hits from the 60s feature inferior recent re-recordings, the title of Tranluxes GREATEST HITS, GREATEST RECORDINGS series of reissues is a welcome indicator of quality. Featuring high-quality remasters of the original recordings, this 14-track compilation focuses primarily on the many singles the Zombies released between their two albums, 1964s BEGIN HERE and 1968s classic ODESSEY AND ORACLE. Besides classics like "Shes Not There," "Tell Her No" and "Time of the Season," GREATEST HITS, GREATEST RECORDINGS also features lesser-known gems like "I Love You," "I Want You Back Again" and the jazz-influenced quintets amazing rendition of George and Ira Gershwins "Summertime." The compilation concludes with a nice bonus--a lengthy and informative interview with Zombies keyboardist Rod Argent.

Zombie Heaven : Allmusic album Review : Sometimes boxed sets are just handy to have around, just to get all of the tracks that count (or all of a groups recordings) together in one place. Other times, however, theyre a scintillating musical and educational experience even for longtime fans, and thats the case with Zombie Heaven. The group is mostly known here for their three major hits, although reissues showcasing different aspects of their history have been available for years. But even for this longtime fan, hearing their Brit-beat R&B; stylings all in one place was a near-revelation, showcasing performing talent that was a good match for anyone in the Beatles line-up and composers, in Rod Argent and, to a lesser degree, Chris White (who sounds like hes slipping into a Dylan thing on "I Dont Want To Know"), that could generate the occasional classic. They were far more than a three-song band, as just about every second of the 280 minutes of this box keeps reminding us. The set is broken down into four distinct parts, the first disc profiling the groups singles and B-sides, and their one Decca-release album, Begin Here, all in the best sound theyve ever had or likely ever will have; Disc Two comprises their Odessey & Oracle album (sounding much better here than it does on the Rhino CD), and the surviving tracks of various post-Zombies and Zombies-in-name-only projects put together in the wake of "Time of the Seasons" success, and one lost group classic, Rod Argents "If It Dont Work Out," which became much better known in the hands of Dusty Springfield; Disc Three is made up of various outtakes, work-in-progress, and alternate versions of their songs and demos, some of them sounding really raw and hard, as well as one radio promo for the movie Bunny Lake Is Missing, in which the group was featured in a small part (blink and you may miss them); and Disc Four, maybe the most rewarding of all, featuring their complete BBC appearances, parts of which (but not the 29 tracks here) turned up on a Rhino LP some 17 years ago. Some tracks are better than others--their cover of "You Really Got A Hold On Me/Bring It On Home To Me" is one of the better British homages to Motown, lagging behind the Beatles version on emotional wattage but winning points for subtlety--but except for a few of the late 60s outtakes, theres not a seconde-rate song here, and the sound puts all prior versions of this material to shame. And the notes will keep fans busy reading for weeks.

Absolutely the Best : Allmusic album Review : At the time of its release, Absolutely the Best was, indeed, absolutely the best single-disc Zombies collection available in the U.S. Of course the big hits "Shes Not There," "Tell Her No," and "Time of the Season" were included, along with the groups minor U.S. chart entries "Shes Coming Home," "I Want You Back Again," "Just out of Reach," and "Imagine the Swan," and some good album tracks. With 16 cuts in just over 40 minutes, this is not a comprehensive compilation, but for most fans who know only the three big hits and would welcome some similar sounding material, its plenty.

The Decca Stereo Anthology : Allmusic album Review : There were a bunch of Zombies reissues in the 1990s and early 2000s, including a Zombies box set, Zombie Heaven, that seemed to gather just about everything conceivable recorded by the group. So how exactly does this two-CD, 48-song compilation of their 1964-1966 Decca sessions fit into the pecking order? Well, if you have the box set, its for the fanatics, since most of these tracks also appear on that box. The crucial difference, though, is that these have been newly remixed for stereo. Thats not a trifling distinction, since many of these songs have never been previously available in stereo (though it would have been nice if the otherwise admirably detailed liner notes made it clear which ones fall into that category). And you do get a little bit in the way of extras that havent been previously available, in the form of backing tracks for "Leave Me Be," "Work n Play," "Just out of Reach," and "Whenever Youre Ready," as well as some bits and pieces of false starts to some of the tracks, though it would take a mighty dedicated Zombies specialist to figure out which such false starts might have previously appeared on other releases. On just two tracks, theres a little bit of 2002 overdubbing that might miff purists -- original Zombies drummer Hugh Grundy put an overdub on "Shes Not There" to simulate the drum overdub that was used in the mono mix, as he did with a tambourine for "Is This the Dream." Keep in mind, though, that the mono mixes of those songs are available elsewhere (on Zombie Heaven, for instance, on the same label), so its not as if any irreparable changes have been enacted. As for the music itself -- something that might get overlooked given the extremely specialized approach of this anthology -- it really is great, in remixed stereo as it is here, or in mono. For audiophiles and obsessives, these do give you the chance to hear this in conscientiously mixed stereo. But even if this is the only Zombies anthology you get, its an excellent collection on its own terms, including all of their varied and wonderful singles and numerous non-single tracks recorded prior to 1967, showing them as one of the most melodically inventive rock bands ever. Note, however, that it has nothing recorded after 1966, which means theres no "Time of the Season" and nothing from their acclaimed Odessey & Oracle album.

Into the Afterlife : Allmusic album Review : Although the Zombies broke up at the end of 1967, there wasnt a wholly clean break between that era and the time by which Rod Argent and Chris White established themselves with Argent, and Colin Blunstone established himself as a solo artist. For a year or two, they variously wrote, recorded, and produced demos and low-profile official releases as they hatched their next moves, Blunstone even left the music business entirely for a while. While some of this material came out under the Zombies name, much of it either remained unreleased or (in the case of Blunstones recordings) was issued under the pseudonym of Neil MacArthur. The 20-track Into the Afterlife compilation rescues much of this rare material, combining numerous previously unissued demos recorded by the groups primary songwriters (Argent and White) with both sides of all three of the singles Blunstone released as Neil MacArthur. It also offers a couple MacArthur/Blunstone outtakes, alternate "orchestral" mixes of a few late Zombies tracks, an Italian-language recording of MacArthurs "Shes Not There," and even a genuinely live-on-TV 1967 Zombies cover of the Miracles "Going to a Go-Go." Far from being a barrel-scraping exercise, it shows the musicians to be making interesting music in its own right that often sounded like a natural continuation of what the Zombies had recorded in the late 60s. Argent handles lead vocals on the Argent/White demos, and while hes not quite as good a singer as Blunstone, hes both good and has a similar style, making those cuts sound pretty close to genuine Zombies tracks. Their songs share many traits with the Zombies material circa Odessey and Oracle in their baroque melodicism, breathy vocals, and haunting flavor, though with just a tinge of the progressive rock that was starting to emerge at the end of the 60s. "Telescope (Mr. Galileo)" and "Unhappy Girl" are both standouts in this regard, and "To Julia (For When She Smiles)," the best track on the entire CD, is more than a standout; its delicate combination of quasi-classical balladry and choral backup vocals is every bit the equal of the best tracks on Odessey and Oracle. The Neil MacArthur tracks (including the minor U.K. hit remake of "Shes Not There") are more floridly produced orchestrated pop/rock, but also have their silky charms, particularly the cover of Nilssons "Without Her" and the more understated, acoustic-oriented sad ballad "World of Glass." Thorough annotation by Zombies expert Alec Palao ices the package, and as none of the tracks appear on the otherwise thorough Palao-compiled Zombies box set Zombie Heaven, this CD is a necessary supplement to that box for fans of the group.

The Zombies and Beyond : Allmusic album Review : With their cool, keyboard-dominated arrangements and artful songwriting, the Zombies stood out from the pack during the peak years of the British Invasion, which may have something to do with why the groups biggest American hit came after they broke up. "Time of the Season," from their final album, Odessey and Oracle, belated rose to number three on the singles charts in 1969, a year after the bandmembers had parted ways and lead singer Colin Blunstone and keyboard player Rod Argent had moved on to new projects. The Zombies and Beyond is a 20-track collection that offers a look at what Argent and Blunstone were doing during and after their days in the Zombies. The set leads off with nine of the groups best and best-known songs, including "Time of the Season," "Tell Her No," "Shes Not There," and "This Will Be Our Year." These songs are followed by five post-Zombies tracks from Blunstone, including collaborations with the Alan Parsons Project and with keyboardist Dave Stewart. Next are four songs from Rod Argents group Argent, including the radio hits "Hold Your Head Up" and "God Gave Rock n Roll to You." And finally, the set closes out with two Argent tracks with Blunstone guesting on vocals, "I Want to Fly" and "Southside of the Street."

Still Got That Hunger : Allmusic album Review : While the 2011 album Breathe Out, Breathe In was cautiously billed as "The Zombies featuring Colin Blunstone & Rod Argent," four years later, this new edition of the group is confident enough to simply call themselves the Zombies, though with Jim Rodford from Rods post-Zombies combo on bass, they could also bill themselves as Argent in a pinch. And with its bluesy swagger and big guitar figures, the opening cut on Still Got That Hunger, "Moving On," sounds significantly more like Argent than the band that cut "Shes Not There" or "Time of the Season." The next tune, "Chasing the Past," is much closer to what most Zombies fans would probably hope for, with Argents precise, imaginative piano work and Blunstones vocals recalling the spirit of the Zombies masterpiece Odessey & Oracle, and the group is clearly hoping to jog the memories of their old fans -- the cover art not only apes the look of the Odessey & Oracle sleeve, a figure in the painting is even holding a copy of the 1968 classic. Blunstones voice is in fine shape on these sessions, Argents keyboard skills remain impressive, and they can call forth shadows of their glory days on songs like "Beyond the Borderline" and "Little One." But the new version of "I Want You Back Again," though no embarrassment, sounds rather pale compared to the 1965 original, and the overweening nostalgia of "New York" is a reminder that sentimentality was never this groups strongest suit. Despite these flaws, the jazzy touches of "And We Were Young Again" and the polished rock & roll of "Maybe Tomorrow" show this version of the Zombies are capable of creating a sound of their own thats strong and engaging, and guitarist Tom Toomey and drummer Steve Rodford fill their roles with seasoned dexterity. The 21st century version of the Zombies are, not unexpectedly, a band with a different sound and feel than the 60s cult heroes, but Still Got That Hunger reminds us Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone still have the talent that made their names, and there are enough moments here where it shines through that fans will want to give this a thorough listen.
