Winter Was Hard : Allmusic album Review : Winter Was Hard is a fairly typical early mélange type recording by Kronos, mixing in au courant contemporary fare with a downtown edge and 20th century classics. Of the former, John Zorns "Forbidden Fruit" (originally available on his album Spillane) is the standout composition, one of the very best pieces he ever wrote in this idiom. Mixing the string quartet with turntablist Christian Marclays wild thrashings and vocalist Ohta Hiromis intensely erotic whisperings was an inspired move. John Luries "Bella by Barlight" is appropriately noirish, while Astor Piazzolla, who had just been introduced to the American public via American Clave records, is ably represented by one of his down-and-dirty tangos. Terry Riley and Arvo Part are less well-represented by works that wallow a bit much in tired minimalist and mystical areas respectively. Alfred Schnittkes "Quartet No. 3" is a robust and romantic work, played with bravura by Kronos, though for sheer gorgeous romanticism, its tough to outdo Barbers "Adagio," here rearranged for string quartet but losing little of its passion and beauty. Winter Was Hard is worth hearing for its highlights, definitely so if the listener hasnt otherwise heard the Zorn piece.

Different Trains / Electric Counterpoint : Allmusic album Review : This late-80s work finds the minimalist composer mixing acoustic and taped material to great effect. The discs centerpiece is "Different Trains," a work that frames Reichs impressions of his boyhood train trips between his mother in Los Angeles and his father in New York; Reich also intersperses references to the much more harrowing train rides Jews were forced to take to Nazi concentration camps. Using the fine playing of the Kronos Quartet as a base, Reich layers the work with the taped train musings of his governess, a retired Pullman porter, and various Holocaust survivors -- vintage train sounds from the 30s and 40s add to the riveting arrangement. And for some nice contrast, Reich recruits guitarist Pat Metheny to create a similarly momentous piece in "Electric Counterpoint" (Metheny plays live over a multi-tracked tape of ten guitars and two electric basses). Two fine works by Reich in his prime.

Black Angels : Allmusic album Review : This disc is supposed to hurt. Just look at the program: it starts with Crumbs Black Angels for electric string quartet, a work that is the aural equivalent of Coppolas Apocalypse Now, and ends with Shostakovichs String Quartet No. 8, a work that is either the aural equivalent of a monument to the victims of war and fascism written in the ruins of Dresden or the musical equivalent of a suicide note written before the composer joined the Communist Party. With the spooky and evocative performances of Thomas Tallis Spem in Alium, Istvan Martas Doom. A Sigh, and Charles Ives There They Are!, this disc is so painful it could be the soundtrack for an unmade Kubrick movie. The question is, is this disc supposed to hurt so much? The Kronos Quartet is a harsh and aggressive ensemble with an angular approach to rhythm and structure and an overwhelming need to assert its individual and collective identity. It tears into the howling notes that begin Black Angels with the ferocity of The Furies and they dont take the pedal off the metal until the last gasp of the final Largo of the Eighth. Yet surely this is the intent of the music: Crumbs Black Angels is as violently anti-war as Shostakovichs Eighth is fatally anti-totalitarian, and any performance that doesnt hurt with the deep pain of righteous vehemence would hardly be worth hearing. Nonesuchs 1990 digital sound is so in your face that its in your skull.

Ghost Opera (Kronos Quartet feat. Wu Man) : Allmusic album Review : For Tan Duns Ghost Opera, the Kronos Quartet had their instrumental abilities stretched to include various percussion, wind instruments, and vocals and were joined by pipa virtuoso Wu Man. The first sound one hears is a hand being drawn through a bowl of water. Soon, strains of Bach appear, accompanied by the pipa, an ancient Chinese lute, and the voiced prayer of a monk. Bach figures into much of the work, in fact, as if being played by a traveling string quartet making their way through back-country China. The piece slides comfortably between these areas, the strings sometimes taking on an Asian character that compliments the Baroque allusions in an oddly effective manner. The music is generally soft in nature with, aside from the Bach, frequent references to Chinese folk songs of a pastoral quality. Its almost lulling at times, though theres enough subtlety of detail to keep the attentive listener engaged. Those who only cottoned to Tan Dun after his success several years after this recording, with the soundtrack to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, should enjoy this carefully considered, meditative piece.

Nuevo : Allmusic album Review : Its sort of like comedian Eddie Murphy and his family of film alter egos called the Klumps -- even if youre not a fan of the Kronos Quartet, you cant help but be bowled over by the sheer quantity and quality of the impersonations they accomplish on their Nuevo album. The project sets itself the task of evoking Mexican music in all its awe-inspiring variety, so the quartet steps into the roles of mariachi band (on El sinaloense), symphony orchestra (in an arrangement of Revueltas Sensemaya), son huasteco ensemble (El llorar), 1960s easy listening session band (on Esquivels Mini Skirt of 1968), Mexican pop vocal soloist and accompanying strings (on several numbers), home electronics studio on Ariel Guziks Plasmaht, as well as several less classifiable ones. Recorded Mexican street sounds and conversations are interspersed between and within pieces, a novel hip-hop-like effect, and the disc closes with a full-fledged dance remix by Plankton Man of the opening mariachi number in which several musical worlds wondrously seem to meet. The Kronos displays its usual knack for finding gifted collaborators here. The Mexican art rock group Café Tacuba makes an appearance, and a major unseen presence is the underrated Argentine-Israeli-American composer Osvaldo Golijov, who arranged the bulk of the music for string quartet and did a fabulous job of making the quartet sound neither grafted-on nor overbearing. There are certainly a lot of layers here, and time will tell whether they have much to reveal beyond postmodernism-on-your-sleeve coolness. In the meantime, this recording is a hell of a lot of fun -- Amazon UK calls it "foremost a party record," and when was the last time a classical disc got reviewed like that? Prepare to be amazed.

Oceana : Allmusic album Review : The three pieces by Osvaldo Golijov recorded here offer more evidence that his is one of the freest and most compelling voices on the scene. Although he came to the attention of the broader public in 2000 with the bold stylistic juxtapositions of La Pasión según San Marco, Oceana, written in 1996, incorporates a comparable diversity of elements. Perhaps even more than La Pasión, Oceana mingles its various idioms into an integrated aesthetic vision. What stands out is Golijovs fearless rejection of the orthodoxies of modernism, postmodernism, minimalism, and every other -ism that limits the definition of an acceptable aesthetic. Oceana is a large-scale cantata for which the unique sound of Brazilian singer Luciana Souza provided inspiration, and her voice is a unifying thread that runs through it. Its evocative of oceanic vastness without being imitative, and its moments of grand emotion are passionate, even spiritual; the fact that the ecstatic choral exclamations, "Oceana!" are easily mistaken for "Hosanna!" cannot have been coincidental. Souzas voice is absolutely astounding in its tonal coloring and expressive range. Robert Spano leads the Gwinnett Young Singers and the Atlanta Symphony & Chorus in a radiant performance. Tenebrae is a two-movement reflection written for the Kronos Quartet, inspired by Couperins setting of the "Lamentations of Jeremiah" for the Tenebrae service of Holy Week. Golijov writes that his challenge "was to sound like an orbiting spaceship that never touches ground." The work succeeds in hinting at a hovering sadness that is too profound and private to be overtly expressed. Three Songs uses texts in Yiddish, Spanish, and (American) English, reflecting the various personal and musical influences that have contributed to the composers style. Golijov writes to the strengths of Dawn Upshaws voice, and she sings with gorgeous tone and profound insight. The diversity of the selections and the superb performances make this album a terrific introduction to the range of Golijovs gift and vision.

The Cusp of Magic : Allmusic album Review : For Terry Rileys 70th birthday, the Kronos Quartet commissioned him to write a piece for them, and he decided to include pipa player Wu Man (who also sings), as well as drum, rattle, various toys, and synthesizer. Its the most eclectic piece Riley has written for Kronos; he outdoes himself in the number of world music traditions, Western styles, and eccentric instruments he incorporates into The Cusp of Magic, whose title refers to the summer solstice. Each of its six movements has a program associated with it, and the outer movements are evocations of sacred Native American peyote rituals. The hallucinogenic, kaleidoscopically overlapping, and evolving soundscapes spill out into all the movements, which are musically differentiated, but which are all full of startling, serendipitous juxtapositions and sonic confrontations. In spite of its extreme eclecticism, each movement, as well as the piece as a whole, has an integrality and purposefulness that never seem random; the listener is clearly in the hands of a composer whos fully in control of the situation. Rileys harmonic language is largely tonal, and for the listener attuned to his aesthetic, the music is by turns powerful, evocative, spooky, and just plain lovely. It goes without saying that the Kronos Quartet and Wu Man throw themselves wholeheartedly into Rileys music, playing (and singing) with real authority and passion. Nonesuchs sound is clean and lively, with a great sense of presence.

Music for Heart and Breath : Allmusic album Review : Richard Reed Parry is one of the members of the monstrously successful Montreal rock band Arcade Fire. That said, try this album out on a friend without identifying the composer, and s/he will be unlikely to guess that it comes from any kind of rock-to-classical crossover background. Parry was not classically trained but had frequent exposure to classical music in his youth, and the music is notated and possessed of an economy and a structural orientation rare in a composer coming from the top echelons of the rock world. The title Music for Heart and Breath refers to the fact that the performers determine the tempo of the music by referring to their own heartbeats and breathing, not in a general way but wearing stethoscopes to put themselves in close touch with their own rhythms. The instrumental contributions are seen as elaborations of these basic beats. One is reminded of Moondogs recollection of the Arapaho music he heard as a youth: "the running beat, and alongside it the walking beat, which is also the universal heartbeat." The booklet makes the grandiose claim that Parry is "slowly creating a new paradigm." Moondog aside, the analogy of music with breathing or with heartbeats is hardly new, and Parry draws on minimalist composers from Steve Reich to Arvo Pärt. The pieces tend to sound similar to one another; the genius of Reich and Philip Glass is that, no matter how simple the music may be, each work remains distinctive. Still, Parry doesnt sound precisely like anyone else, either, and for an initial attempt this is pretty impressive. His textures are not continuous like those of most of the minimalists; the music is divided into short phrases that are like conversational utterances, and some of the textures -- hear the glissandi in the concerto-like For heart, breath, and orchestra (track 3) -- are quite evocative. The whole thing succeeds as a sort of night music, and Parrys engineering team, sending the music rock-style among several different studios, gets superb results.
