Bo Diddley
Allmusic Biography : He only had a few hits in the 1950s and early 60s, but as Bo Diddley sang, "You Cant Judge a Book by Its Cover." You cant judge an artist by his chart success, either, and Diddley produced greater and more influential music than all but a handful of the best early rockers. The Bo Diddley beat -- bomp, ba-bomp-bomp, bomp-bomp -- is one of rock & rolls bedrock rhythms, showing up in the work of Buddy Holly, the Rolling Stones, and even pop-garage knock-offs like the Strangeloves 1965 hit "I Want Candy." Diddleys hypnotic rhythmic attack and declamatory, boasting vocals stretched back as far as Africa for their roots, and looked as far into the future as rap. His trademark otherworldly vibrating, fuzzy guitar style did much to expand the instruments power and range. But even more important, Bos bounce was fun and irresistibly rocking, with a wisecracking, jiving tone that epitomized rock & roll at its most humorously outlandish and freewheeling.

Before taking up blues and R&B;, Diddley had studied classical violin, but shifted gears after hearing John Lee Hooker. In the early 50s, he began playing with his longtime partner, maraca player Jerome Green, to get what Bos called "that freight train sound." Billy Boy Arnold, a fine blues harmonica player and singer in his own right, was also playing with Diddley when the guitarist got a deal with Chess in the mid-50s (after being turned down by rival Chicago label Vee-Jay). His very first single, "Bo Diddley"/"Im a Man" (1955), was a double-sided monster. The A-side was soaked with futuristic waves of tremolo guitar, set to an ageless nursery rhyme; the flip was a bump-and-grind, harmonica-driven shuffle, based around a devastating blues riff. But the result was not exactly blues, or even straight R&B;, but a new kind of guitar-based rock & roll, soaked in the blues and R&B;, but owing allegiance to neither.

Diddley was never a top seller on the order of his Chess rival Chuck Berry, but over the next half-dozen or so years, he produced a catalog of classics that rival Berrys in quality. "You Dont Love Me," "Diddley Daddy," "Pretty Thing," "Diddy Wah Diddy," "Who Do You Love?," "Mona," "Road Runner," "You Cant Judge a Book by Its Cover" -- all are stone-cold standards of early, riff-driven rock & roll at its funkiest. Oddly enough, his only Top 20 pop hit was an atypical, absurd back-and-forth rap between him and Jerome Green, "Say Man," that came about almost by accident as the pair were fooling around in the studio.

As a live performer, Diddley was galvanizing, using his trademark square guitars and distorted amplification to produce new sounds that anticipated the innovations of 60s guitarists like Jimi Hendrix. In Great Britain, he was revered as a giant on the order of Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters. The Rolling Stones in particular borrowed a lot from Bos rhythms and attitude in their early days, although they only officially covered a couple of his tunes, "Mona" and "Im Alright." Other British R&B; groups like the Yardbirds, Animals, and Pretty Things also covered Diddley standards in their early days. Buddy Holly covered "Bo Diddley" and used a modified Bo Diddley beat on "Not Fade Away"; when the Stones gave the song the full-on Bo treatment (complete with shaking maracas), the result was their first big British hit.

The British Invasion helped increase the publics awareness of Diddleys importance, and ever since then hes been a popular live act. Sadly, though, his career as a recording artist -- in commercial and artistic terms -- was over by the time the Beatles and Stones hit America. He would record with ongoing and declining frequency, but after 1963, he never wrote or recorded original material on par with his early classics. Whether hed spent his muse, or just felt he could coast on his laurels, is hard to say. But he remains a vital part of the collective rock & roll consciousness, and occasionally reached wider visibility via a 1979 tour with the Clash, a cameo role in the film Trading Places, a late-80s tour with Ronnie Wood, and a 1989 television commercial for sports shoes with star athlete Bo Jackson.

Go Bo Diddley : Allmusic album Review : Bo Diddleys second album, 1959s Go Bo Diddley, didnt have as many hits and instant classics as his self-titled 1957 debut, but in terms of ceaseless rhythm, choppy guitar heroics, fearless statements of purpose, and inspired eccentricity, its nearly as brilliant as Bo Diddley, and no one who follows Bos genius should be without it. Go Bo Diddley has it all -- oft-covered classics ("Oh Yea," "Dearest Darling"), hoodoo blues workouts ("You Dont Love Me"), red-hot dance numbers ("Dont Let It Go"), tall tales ("The Great Grandfather," "Willie and Lillie"), stories of romantic difficulties ("Crackin Up"), Bo getting frantic on his guitar ("Bos Guitar," in case you couldnt tell), Bo and maracas man Jerome Green trading insults ("Say Man"), and even Bo showing off his skills on the violin ("The Clock Strikes Twelve"). The recording is full of that priceless five-foot-thick Chess Records echo, which only adds to the epic-scale mystery of these performances, and Bo is audacious and energetic on all 12 tracks. Bo Diddley was always one of the most unusual artists in the first wave of rock & roll, a guy whose sound and songwriting style always set him apart from his peers, and Go Bo Diddley finds him sounding truly individualistic, and truly entertaining to boot. An essential item for fans of early rock at its most beautifully bent.

Bo Diddley in the Spotlight : Allmusic album Review : As with Bo Diddleys first five albums (except Have Guitar, Will Travel), the most important cuts (but not all the good ones) off of this album have been included on The Chess Box from MCA, which doesnt mean that this record isnt a good separate issue, just somewhat redundant if you have the box. There are surprises from these 1960-vintage recordings, including the languid, Caribbean-sounding "Limber"; the soft, romantic "Love Me"; the doo wop-style "Deed and Deed I Do"; the loping "Walkin and Talkin"; upbeat, gospel-tinged rockers such as "Let Me In" interspersed with the hot and raunchy "Road Runner," "The Story of Bo Diddley," "Craw-Dad" (a genuine diamond in the rough), and "Signifying Blues"; and solid instrumentals like "Scuttle Bug" (really "Live My Life" with the vocals removed and Otis Spann overdubbed on piano) that make this record more than worthwhile.

Have Guitar Will Travel : Allmusic album Review : Amazingly, Bo Diddleys third album -- containing classics such as "Cops and Robbers," "Run Diddley Daddy," and "Mona (I Need You Baby)" -- has only been reissued on vinyl, and even thats out of print. More than one British Invasion band learned what they needed to know about American rock & roll from the songs on this record (the Stones cut "Cops and Robbers" at their earliest recording session, and later released a killer version of "Mona," though the most interesting British version of the latter was done by an all-girl band with an attitude called the Liverbirds). This record is every bit as raunchy as Diddleys first two albums (the guitars may even be crunchier, and the singing shows more range), and has more than enough to recommend it to collectors and fans. This is the album that began the funny cover photos on Diddleys records.

Bo Diddley Is a Gunslinger : Allmusic album Review : Not only does it sport one of the most striking album covers of its era (Diddley decked out in cowboy finery, about to get the drop on some unfortunate varmint with one of his fieriest guitars lying at his feet), this 1961 album contains some fine music. The title track continues the legend of you-know-who, while "Ride on Josephine" and "Cadillac" rock like hell (and Ed Sullivan must have been glad to see that Diddley finally learned "Sixteen Tons"). Two bonus cuts, "Working Man" and "Do What I Say," make this one a must.

Surfin' With Bo Diddley : Allmusic album Review : This is where Bo -- or, more properly, Chess Records -- really took a wrong step, starting with the fact that The Originator himself is actually on only about half of the cuts here, the balance having been recorded by guitarist Billy Lee Riley. The idea wasnt as bad as it sounded, at least on paper -- Bo had been an indirect influence on tons of surf bands, with his signature grunge guitar-sound, but the surf music world wasnt ready for a Bo-style instrumental rendition of the Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein II Showboat standard "Ol Man River," and Bos own inspiration behind songs like "Surfers Love Call" was muted, to say the least. Almost as bad -- although more entertaining -- is "Low Tide," Bos rewrite of Bill Justis "Raunchy." The best tracks are "Cookie Headed Diddley" and "Surf, Sink or Swim," which come close to matching some of Bos solid material from earlier albums and singles.

500% More Man : Allmusic album Review : By the end of 1965, Bo was making a conscious effort to recapture both the Black listenership who had deserted him, and the white audience that was buying all of those soul records. Unfortunately, neither he nor Chess knew exactly how to go about it, and the result was another good album largely unheard by the public. The title track marks Bos return to the Muddy Waters beat that he appropriated for "Im a Man" (and that Muddy took back in "Mannish Boy") a decade earlier, and is one of Bos greatest 60s sides. "Greasy Spoon" mentions Muddy amid its comical description of the offerings of a particularly unclean eatery (its amazing when you think of it -- ten years recording in Chicago, and longer than that living there, and Bo was still nearly as much a country blues artist as he was when he started). "Let Me Pass" is a hot number with an infectious beat and some very funny lyrics, with Bo playing some delectable guitar. "Stop My Monkey," featuring Bo backed by the singing group the Cookies, has him again trying for a commercial soul-sound in a Motown vein, and "Tonight Is Ours" is one of Bos most heartfelt romantic numbers, with the Cookies singing their hearts out while Bo tries his hand at a song that mightve fit well on either of the first two albums by the Miracles, while "Hey, Red Riding Hood" brought back the Bo Diddley beat for another go around, this time with delightfully raunchy lyrics amid crisper textures, and a much finer sound than ever before. "Heys So Mad" is pretty lackluster except for the guitar break, but "Root Hoot" shouldve been more widely heard than it was, being one of Bos more infectious chant-based songs. "Corn Bread" has a neatly stinging, Slim Harpo-type lead guitar sound, and is overall an okay instrumental. And then theres "Soul Food," another great Bo Diddley rocker lost in the middle of the 60s soul boom -- Bo is so smooth, impassioned, sexy, and raw, and the Cookies sound so good backing him on one of his best instrumental tracks ever, that the fact this song was never a hit is a crime. By 1965, however, nobody in America was buying his records, even ones like this filled to bursting with good music and good humor, and even the British were beginning to lose interest in Bos latest records. This was among Bos last sessions with the Duchess, and the group hes using is more or less the studio equivalent of the band hes seen with in The Big TNT Show (aka That Was Rock).

The Super Super Blues Band : Allmusic album Review : This is easily a "super super blues bust." Power trios, of course, were hip in the late 60s -- even at down-home Chess Studios, where ad hoc "supergroups" were assembled for 1967s Super Blues and its sequel, Super Super Blues Band. (No one ever accused Chess Records of being subtle.) The band on Super Super Blues Band included two-thirds of the original Super Blues headliners -- Muddy Waters and Bo Diddley -- with Howlin Wolf replacing Little Walter to round out the trio. Unlike Walter, who was willing to cede the spotlight to Diddley and Waters on Super Blues, Wolf adamantly refuses to back down from his rivals, resulting in a flood of contentious studio banter that turns out to be more entertaining than the otherwise unmemorable music from this stylistic train wreck. Although Wolf and Waters duke it out in earnest on the blues standards, the presence of Diddley (and his rave-up repertoire) makes the prospect of an ensemble impossible; in the end, there are just too many clashing ingredients (the squealing "girlie" choruses vs. Wolfs growl, Diddleys space guitar antics vs. Waters uncompromising slide guitar) to make the mix digestible. Meanwhile, as the three frontmen struggle to outduel each other on every song, they drown out an underused, all-star backing band made up of Otis Spann on piano, Hubert Sumlin on guitar, Buddy Guy on bass, and Clifton James on drums. At least it sounds like they had fun doing it.

The Black Gladiator : Allmusic album Review : It was four years between the release of Bos last album of all-new cuts, 500% More Man, and this album, during which time hed spent time recording with Chess top bluesmen, Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf. The death of Leonard Chess in October of 1969 resulted in the sale of the label to the GRT corporation, and cost the company what little artistic guidance it had. The result was The Black Gladiator, an attempt to reshape Bo into a funk artist, in the manner of Sly and the Family Stone. As an experiment its understandable, and Bo tries very hard (even making another song-length sexual boast on "You, Bo Diddley," which also ends with a great guitar/organ duet between Bo and Bobby Alexis), but he finally fails to find a groove that works. Despite some good guitar here and there, this record falls into the same category as Muddys Electric Mud and After the Rain albums, and Howlin Wolfs New Album, all of which attempted to transform each into a psychedelic rocker. "Power House" is a pretty good cut, using a modified Muddy Waters-"Im a Man"/"Mannish Boy" beat and lyrics. Much of the rest is for absolute completists only, however.

Another Dimension : Allmusic album Review : By the end of 1970, most of Bo Diddleys income was derived from his concert work, primarily as an "oldies" act in rock n roll revival shows such as the Toronto concert where he shared a stage with the Plastic Ono Band. But he and Chess believed there was still a way for him to try and reach a wider, more contemporary audience. This album was the result, a valiant effort to update Bo Diddleys sound and image, somewhat in the vein of Muddy Waters Electric Mud, only a few years later, and only slightly more successful in that quest, in the sense of yielding one lasting addition to Bos repertory. Relevance was the key word, not only in the song selection, which includes three John Fogerty tunes ("Lodi," "Bad Moon Rising," "Down on the Corner") and covers of numbers by the Band and Elton John, but a new song entitled "Pollution" that tries hard to integrate the Bo Diddley beat into a message piece -- its a good try, but nothing on this record (including "Pollution") was going to challenge Marvin Gayes Whats Going On for primacy or effectiveness. The record starts off well enough, with a superb, deeply soulful cover of Al Koopers "I Love You More Than Youll Ever Know," and a decent rendition of "The Shape Im In." But two of the Fogerty covers ("Lodi" is the only one that sort of works) are embarrassing, with the girlie chorus killing "Bad Moon Rising." And "Bad Side of the Moon" was a waste of studio time. One song from this album has remained part of Bos concert set for decades, however -- "I Said Shutup Woman," which has the most traditional sound of anything on Another Dimension.

Got My Own Bag of Tricks : Allmusic album Review : For a lot of years, this double-album compilation -- sort of the Bo Diddley equivalent to Chuck Berrys The Great 28 or the first two Chuck Berry Golden Decade sets -- was the best collection of Diddleys stuff on the market, containing all of his best known songs and some of the best of his album tracks up through the mid-60s. After it was deleted in America, it was available as an import from Canada and then Europe for a long time. On vinyl it is one place to start, although the double-CD Chess Box has supplanted it in many respects.

Bo Diddley / Go Bo Diddley : Allmusic album Review : Legendary guitarist, gifted songwriter, master of rhythm, snappy dresser -- Bo Diddley is all these things and more, and this two-fer CD, which reissues Diddleys first two albums on one convenient compact disc, offers a solid introduction to this mans special brand of musical innovation. While anyone looking for a full overview of Diddleys career should obviously go elsewhere (His Best [Chess 50th Anniversary Collection] is a great one-stop shopping place for beginners), these 23 tunes serve up a young Bo Diddley at his raw and primal best, and confirm that right out of the box the guy didnt sound like anyone else in rock & roll. Between Diddleys hypnotic, rhythmic guitar lines; the implacable rattle of Jerome Greens maracas; the spacy echo that threatens to envelop everything around it; and the borderline surrealism of the lyrics (witness the updated "Mr. Bones" routine of "Say Man," the overpopulated family of "Say Bossman," or the supreme bad-ass-ism of "Who Do You Love"), this mans music existed in a world of its own, and while you might not want to live there, the one-hour tour offered on Bo Diddley/Go Bo Diddley makes it sound like a great place to take a vacation. In the interest of accuracy, this disc even includes the same take of "Dearest Darling" twice, since the tune managed to appear on both Bo Diddley and Go Bo Diddley; nice to know someone at Chess reissue department was paying attention to the details.

The Chess Box : Allmusic album Review : Not every single track youll ever want or need by the legendary shave-and-a-haircut rhythm R&B;/rock pioneer, but a great place to begin. Two discs (45 songs) in a great big box with a nice accompanying booklet contain the groundbreaking introduction "Bo Diddley" (never again would he be referred to as Ellas McDaniel), its swaggering flipside "Im a Man," the killer follow-ups "Diddley Daddy," "Im Looking for a Woman," "Who Do You Love?," and "Hey Bo Diddley;" signifying street-corner humor ("Say Man"), piledriving rockers ("Road Runner," "Shes Alright," "You Cant Judge a Book by Its Cover"), and numerous stunning examples of his daringly innovative guitar style.

Rare & Well Done : Allmusic album Review : 16 extreme rarities from the deepest recesses of the Chess vaults that date from 1955-1968. The grinding "Shes Fine, Shes Mine," and the snarling "Im Bad," are comparatively well-known, at least to collectors; far more obscure are the previously unissued "Heart-O-Matic Love," "Cookie-Headed Diddley," and "Moon Baby."

Super Blues : Allmusic album Review : This is the first of two super session albums that Chess produced in the late 60s. Time has been a bit kinder to this one, featuring Muddy, Bo Diddley and Little Walter, than the one cut a year later with Howlin Wolf standing in for Walter. Its loose and extremely sloppy, the time gets pushed around here and there and Little Walters obviously in bad shape, his voice rusted to a croak and trying to blow with a collapsed lung. But there are moments where Bos heavily tremoloed guitar sounds just fine and the band kicks it in a few spots and Muddy seems to be genuinely enjoying himself. Granted, these moments are few and way too far between, but at least nobodys playing a wah-wah pedal on here.

Bo's Blues : Allmusic album Review : Bos Blues features 22 of Bo Diddleys best blues-oriented sides from the Chess catalog, including some rare stuff -- the rip-roaring 1959 outing "Run Diddley Daddy," a jive-loaded "Cops and Robbers" from 1956 that features maraca shaker Jerome Green more than Diddley, and a surging "Down Home Special." If you think that everything Bo Diddley ever made has that same shave-and-a-haircut beat, this collection will set you straight!

A Man Amongst Men : Allmusic album Review : Bo Diddleys major-label 90s comeback effort A Man Amongst Men is overflowing with guest stars, but it rarely gels into something distinctive. The presence of such heavyweights as Keith Richards, Ron Wood, and Jimmie Vaughan actually weighs down the set, preventing Diddley from digging deep into the grooves. The band never quite rocks hard enough and no one tears off an inspired solo -- A Man Amongst Men is pleasant, but it never approaches compelling listening.
