Moanin’ in the Moonlight : Allmusic album Review : Moanin in the Moonlight was Howlin Wolfs first collection of sides for the Chess label, packed with great tunes and untouchable performances by the man himself. The last word in electric Chicago blues, Wolf was possessed of fine guitar and harp skills, a voice that could separate skin from bone, and a sheer magnetism and charisma that knew (and has known) no equal. This disc is outstanding throughout, and features some of his best sides, including "How Many More Years," "Smokestack Lightnin," "Evil," and "I Asked for Water (She Gave Me Gasoline)." Highly recommended for the uninitiated and a must for collectors.

Howling Wolf Sings the Blues : Allmusic album Review : The U.K.s Ace label pulls together 20 tracks on this all-killer-no-filler comp. There is a nice range of material from Howlin Wolfs Memphis era. Tracks on Sings the Blues include "Ridin in the Moonlight," "Do Me Around," "Im the Wolf," and "Backslide Boogie," to name a few. This was an innovative and rough-and-tumble era for Wolf and his band, and the music here makes it come to life; it is proof-positive of Wolfs enduring stature as a blues icon.

The Real Folk Blues : Allmusic album Review : In the mid-60s, Chess Records released a great series of compilations of 40s and 50s singles by some of its best blues artists, all of them called The Real Folk Blues. The Howlin Wolf entry is possibly the best of the batch, and one of the best introductions to this mercurial electric bluesman. Opening with the savage "Killing Floor," the album doesnt let up in intensity, and it happily focuses on Wolfs less-anthologized sides, which gives the album a freshness a lot of blues compilations lack. From the sly "Built for Comfort" and "Three Hundred Pounds of Fun" to the apocalyptic "Natchez Burning," every track is pure Chicago blues at its finest. The albums only flaws are its skimpy 32-minute running length and the inexplicable omission of perhaps Wolfs greatest single, the amazing "How Many More Years."

More Real Folk Blues : Allmusic album Review : This companion volume to the Real Folk Blues album was issued in 1967 (after the Wolf had appeared on network television with the Rolling Stones, alluded to in the original liner notes) and couldnt be more dissimilar in content to the first one if you had planned it that way. Whereas the previous volume highlighted middle-period Wolf, this one goes all the way back to his earliest Chess sessions, many of which sound like leftover Memphis sides. The chaotic opener, "Just My Kind," sets a familiar Wolf theme to a "Rollin & Tumblin" format played at breakneck speed, and what the track lacks in fidelity is more than made up in sheer energy. For a classic example of Wolfs ensemble Chicago sound, its pretty tough to beat "I Have a Little Girl," where the various members of his band seem to be all soloing simultaneously -- not unlike a Dixieland band -- right through Wolfs vocals. For downright scary, the demonic-sounding "Ill Be Around" is an absolute must-hear. Wolfs harp solo on this slow blues is one of his best and the vocal that frames it sounds like the microphone is going to explode at any second. As soul singer Christine Ohlman commented upon hearing this track for the first time, "Boy, Id sure hate to be the woman hes singing that one to."

The Super Super Blues Band : Allmusic album Review : This is easily a "super super blues bust." Power trios, of course, were hip in the late 60s -- even at down-home Chess Studios, where ad hoc "supergroups" were assembled for 1967s Super Blues and its sequel, Super Super Blues Band. (No one ever accused Chess Records of being subtle.) The band on Super Super Blues Band included two-thirds of the original Super Blues headliners -- Muddy Waters and Bo Diddley -- with Howlin Wolf replacing Little Walter to round out the trio. Unlike Walter, who was willing to cede the spotlight to Diddley and Waters on Super Blues, Wolf adamantly refuses to back down from his rivals, resulting in a flood of contentious studio banter that turns out to be more entertaining than the otherwise unmemorable music from this stylistic train wreck. Although Wolf and Waters duke it out in earnest on the blues standards, the presence of Diddley (and his rave-up repertoire) makes the prospect of an ensemble impossible; in the end, there are just too many clashing ingredients (the squealing "girlie" choruses vs. Wolfs growl, Diddleys space guitar antics vs. Waters uncompromising slide guitar) to make the mix digestible. Meanwhile, as the three frontmen struggle to outduel each other on every song, they drown out an underused, all-star backing band made up of Otis Spann on piano, Hubert Sumlin on guitar, Buddy Guy on bass, and Clifton James on drums. At least it sounds like they had fun doing it.

The Howlin' Wolf Album : Allmusic album Review : Born in Aberdeen, Mississippi, Chester Burnett, better known by his stage name Howlin Wolf, helped modernize the country blues with his powerful vocal style and harmonica work and his ability to connect with an audience no matter what stage he prowled. This album, though, originally released in 1969 on the Chess Records subsidiary Cadet Records, is hardly typical Wolf, and the bluesman himself hated it, which may in some way have contributed to the albums odd cult standing. The idea was as simple as it was probably misguided, an attempt to modernize Wolfs sound into psychedelic Jimi Hendrix land, and the results were, well, odd at best, and laughable and lamentable at worst, and through no fault of Wolfs, who obviously tried his best to make sense of all of it. Howlin Wolf completists will want this for its novelty value, but its far from an accurate portrait of this powerful bluesmans talent and appeal.

The London Howlin’ Wolf Sessions : Allmusic album Review : For the casual blues fan with a scant knowledge of the Wolf, this 1971 pairing, with Eric Clapton, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts from the Rolling Stones, Ringo Starr, and other British superstars, appears on the surface to be one hell of a super session. But those lofty notions are quickly dispelled once you slip this disc into the player and hit play. While its nowhere near as awful as some blues purists make it out to be, the disparity of energy levels between the Wolf and his U.K. acolytes is not only palpable but downright depressing. Wolf was a very sick man at this juncture and Norman Dayrons non-production idea of just doing remakes of earlier Chess classics is wrongheaded in the extreme. The rehearsal snippet of Wolf trying to teach the band how to play Willie Dixons "Little Red Rooster" shows just how far off the mark the whole concept of this rock superstar mélange truly is. Even Eric Clapton, who usually welcomes any chance to play with one of his idols, has criticized this album repeatedly in interviews, which speaks volumes in and of itself.

The Back Door Wolf : Allmusic album Review : This, Wolfs last hurrah, is his final studio album. Cut with his regular working band, the Wolf Gang, everything here works well, despite Detroit Juniors annoying use of harpsichord on several tracks. Highlights include Eddie Shaws "Coon on the Moon," Wolfs own "Moving" and "Stop Using Me," and both takes of "Speak Now Woman." Not the place to start a Wolf collection by any means, but a great place to end up.

Ridin’ in the Moonlight : Allmusic album Review : Having moved from his home in Mississippi to Arkansas and eventually West Memphis, Howlin Wolf recorded his first sides for Sam Phillips at the Memphis Recording Service between 1951-1953. These important recordings show that Wolfs gruff, Delta-fashioned and piledriving blues style was already intact before he hooked up with Chess for a successful stretch that would continue into the 60s. Featuring the fractured and menacing guitar work of Willie Johnson (equally celebrated axe man Hubert Sumlin would eventually supplant Johnson as the featured guitarist on Wolfs Chicago sides), the pumping piano of Ike Turner, and the ragged-but-right drumming of Willie Steel, the 16 tracks included on this Ace collection are alternate takes of some of the Memphis material originally released by Modern Records. While most of the master takes can be heard on Flair/Virgins Howlin Wolf Rides Again, the tracks on Ridin in the Moonlight are certainly worthwhile, especially for collectors. With his permanently hoarse pipes and sour harmonica in the forefront, Wolf leads the band on highlights like the tittle track, "Chocolate Drop," "Keep What You Got," "Drivin This Highway," and "Passing by Blues." A highly enjoyable release; newcomers, though, are advised to check out one of Wolfs Chess collections or the Flair album first.

Muddy & The Wolf : Allmusic album Review : The title is a bit of a ringer, since this isnt a collaborative effort in any way, shape, or form. Muddy & the Wolf contains a half-dozen live Muddy Waters tracks with backing from Mike Bloomfield, Paul Butterfield, and Otis Spann, the material culled from the Fathers & Sons sessions. The set also features tracks by Howlin Wolf from his London sessions with Eric Clapton and Ringo Starr. File under "just OK."

Cadillac Daddy: Memphis Recordings, 1952 : Allmusic album Review : You cant possibly fault the material aboard this 12-song collection of Howlin Wolfs Memphis recordings cut for Sam Phillips. The title track features some truly frightening guitar work from Willie Johnson, and all the material here is loaded with feral energy and a sense that it could fall apart at any second. Its totally intuitive music, with Wolf seemingly making it all up as he went along, which Sam Phillips had the patience to capture as it all went down. These are some of the great moments in blues history, but this part of Wolfs career is better documented on the two Bear Family volumes of the same material and the Flair/Virgin single disc of Memphis and West Memphis recordings.

Change My Way : Allmusic album Review : Originally compiled and issued in 1975 as a vinyl album in the original Chess Blues Masters Series, this 19-tracker is some of Wolfs best middle-period (1959-1963) material. Surprisingly, many of the tracks were cut in stereo and their appearance on compact disc does much to enhance their sonic ambience. Although some of this material surfaces on the three-disc Howlin Wolf box set ("I Aint Superstitious," "Just Like I Treat You"), this single disc stands mightily on its own. If you really want to hear Hubert Sumlin rip up the fretboard, this an excellent place to start.

The Chess Box : Allmusic album Review : This three-CD box set currently rates as the best -- and most digestible -- overview of Howlin Wolfs career. Disc one starts with the Memphis sides that eventually brought him to the label, including hits like "How Many More Years," but also compiling unissued sides that had previously only been available on vinyl bootlegs of dubious origin and fidelity. The disc finishes with an excellent cross section of early Chicago sessions, including classic Wolf tracks like "Evil," "Forty Four," "Ill Be Around," and "Who Will Be Next?" Disc two picks it up from there, guiding listeners from mid- to late-50s barnburners like "The Natchez Burning" and "I Better Go Now" to the bulk of the Willie Dixon classics. The final disc runs out the last of the Dixon sessions into mid-60s classics like "Killing Floor," taking the listener to a nice selection of his final recordings. A really nice bonus on this box set is the inclusion on the first two discs of snippets from a 1968 Howlin Wolf interview and two performances of Wolf playing solo acoustic. If youve heard the sound of the Wolf, heres where you go to get a lot of it in one place. Definitely not the place to start (unless you have money to burn), but maybe just the perfect place to end up.
