Cyndi Lauper | ||
Allmusic Biography : Cyndi Lauper began her career as a playful rebel, and matured into one of the best respected artists in American music. Lauper rose to fame in 1983 with the release of Shes So Unusual, an album that provided an ideal showcase for her strong but girlish voice and her thrift-shop-genius personality. The album made her an overnight star and a darling of MTV, spawning two major hit singles ("Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "Time After Time") and briefly making her a symbol of hip female empowerment on a par with Madonna. While Lauper wasnt truly a new wave artist, her multicolored hair, her eclectic fashion sense, and the implied inclusivity of her musical philosophy -- embracing elements of pop, reggae, funk, and dance music -- symbolized a free-thinking attitude that cleared a path between the underground and the mainstream. Lauper would never have another hit on the level of Shes So Unusual, but with time her music matured as her persona evolved from a wacky street kid to a woman with ideas and the talent to make things of them. Her music remained eclectic, but with 1989s A Night to Remember and 1992s A Hat Full of Stars, she took greater control of her songwriting and explored serious themes that would have been outside her image a decade before. With 2003s At Last, Lauper showed she could tackle old standards in grand style, and by the 2010s she was a diva who could move from pop to blues (2010s Memphis Blues) and country (2016s Detour) with ease, even writing the songs for a successful stage musical. Born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in the neighboring borough of Queens, Lauper (born June 22, 1953) dropped out of high school in her late teens, choosing to sing in a number of local cover bands instead. Eventually, her voice was so strained she turned to voice lessons from Katherine Agresta, a well-known vocal teacher in New York. In 1977, Lauper began writing her own material with keyboardist John Turi. The duo formed a rockabilly-influenced rock band, Blue Angel, that same year. Over the next few years, the group built up a solid following in New York, culminating in the release of an eponymous debut album on Polydor in 1980. Blue Angel flopped, and shortly afterward Lauper filed for bankruptcy, which led to her groups disbandment. Lauper subsequently sang in local clubs and restaurants. In 1983, her manager and boyfriend, David Wolff, managed to secure her a contract with with the CBS-distributed Portrait label. At the end of the year she released her debut album, Shes So Unusual. Helped by heavy MTV support of the albums first single/video, "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," the album became a major hit in the spring of 1984, eventually climbing to number four on the U.S. charts; it would wind up going platinum five times, as well as becoming a hit in the U.K. and Europe. "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" peaked at number two, while its follow-up, the ballad "Time After Time," reached number one; two other songs, "She Bop" and "All Through the Night," went Top Ten. With mainstream success under her belt, Lauper was an official star, yet she found maintaining her popularity wasnt easy. During 1985 she worked on her follow-up album; her only release of the year was "The Goonies R Good Enough," the theme song from the childrens adventure film The Goonies. Her second album, True Colors, appeared in the fall of 1986, and although it was successful -- the title track went to number one, while the album peaked at number four and went platinum -- its softer adult contemporary sound ran counter to the expectations of some fans. Laupers career continued to lose momentum, as her feature film debut in 1988s comedy Vibes failed to find an audience. A Night to Remember, her third album, was released to weak reviews in 1989, and although it spawned the Top Ten hit "I Drove All Night," it suffered from disappointing sales, peaking at number 37. The next year, she severed her relationship with Wolff and married actor David Thornton. After taking a few years off, Lauper returned in 1993 with Hat Full of Stars, an album where she co-produced and co-wrote all of the tracks. The record stiffed, peaking at 112. The following year, the hits compilation Twelve Deadly Cyns...and Then Some was released in the U.K.; the album reached number two, while a remixed "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" became a number one hit. Twelve Deadly Cyns was released in America the following year to less attention. Lauper released Sisters of Avalon, her first album of new material in four years, in the spring of 1997 to generally positive reviews, yet the record didnt chart. Merry Christmas...Have a Nice Life! followed in late 1998. After a long hiatus, Lauper returned to the studio in 2003 for At Last, a collection of pop standards that garnered favorable reviews and spawned a live DVD, Live...At Last. The Body Acoustic, a collection of stripped-down reinventions of previous hits, followed in 2005. In 2008, Lauper released her tenth studio album, the dance-oriented Bring Ya to the Brink. She then switched gears for 2010s Memphis Blues, which featured her versions of several classic blues songs. Lauper promoted the release of Memphis Blues with a stint on the reality show The Celebrity Apprentice, and over the next few years she specialized in multimedia projects. In 2012, she released an autobiography titled Cyndi Lauper: A Memoir and wrote the score and songs for the Broadway musical adaptation of the 2006 film Kinky Boots. The production earned 13 Tony nominations in 2013 and Lauper took home the trophy for Best Original Score, becoming the first woman to win this category alone. She celebrated the 30th anniversary of Shes So Unusual with a tour in 2013 -- the album also saw a deluxe reissue that year -- and she continued to make appearances on TV. In the spring of 2016 she returned with Detour, a collection of country music covers featuring cameos from Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, and Alison Krauss.

She’s So Unusual : Allmusic album Review : One of the great new wave/early MTV records, Shes So Unusual is a giddy mix of self-confidence, effervescent popcraft, unabashed sentimentality, subversiveness, and clever humor. In short, its a multifaceted portrait of a multifaceted talent, an artist thats far more clever than her thin, deliberately girly voice would indicate. Then again, Laupers voice suits her musical persona, since its chirpiness adds depth, or reconfigures the songs, whether its the call to arms of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" or the tearjerking "Time After Time." Lauper is at her very best on the first side, all of which were singles or received airplay, and this collection of songs -- "Money Changes Everything," "Girls," "When You Were Mine," "Time," "She Bop," "All Through the Night" -- is astonishing in its consistency, so strong that it makes the remaining tracks -- all enjoyable, but rather pedestrian -- charming by their association with songs so brilliantly alive. If Lauper couldnt maintain this level of consistency, its because this captured her persona better than anyone could imagine -- when a debut captures a personality so well, let alone a personality so tied to its time, the successive work cant help but pale in comparison. Still, when its captured as brightly and brilliantly as it is here, it does result in a debut that retains its potency, long after its production seems a little dated.

True Colors : Allmusic album Review : There were a few years in the mid-80s when one couldnt go out for a cup of coffee without encountering Cyndi Lauper in one form or another. Her videos were playing constantly on MTV, her music was everywhere on the radio, and, best of all, children were even dressing up as Cyndi for Halloween. In retrospect, it was a Lauper-ish time but it was all over quite quickly; in fact, the period in the ultra-limelight didnt even span the period covered by two album releases, which means that this follow-up to her smash debut album was relegated to the also-ran pile, with sad results such as only one sort-of hit single (the title track) and nobody apparently interested in imitating the skirt she wore on the back cover photo, which seems like it is made of slashed-up concert posters. Kind of a shame since so much love and attention went into this album. Guest stars and high-dollar session musicians abound, including other 80s icons such as the Bangles and the manic Pee Wee Herman, who provides a great little answering-machine bit at the end of "911." Lauper is a fantastic vocalist, meaning that any record producer worth hiring would be happy to dream up endless settings for her. This album is nothing if not ambitious, and some of the stretches really pay off, such as the ultimately endearing cover of Marvin Gayes "Whats Going On." Other aspects date badly. For example, highly reverberated and artificial sounding drums and keyboards were really popular at the time, but a vocalist with a clear voice such as Lauper sounds much better in the context of real instruments with their warmer sounds. When it comes to tunes such as the nice Cajun number "The Faraway Nearby," drums should have been turned way down and other instrumental colors brought up. Despite these sorts of problems, there really wasnt that much music recorded by this artist during her most popular period, so fans will no doubt want to own it all.

A Night to Remember : Allmusic album Review : On True Colors, Cyndi Lauper began to edge her way into adult contemporary territory, but it was on her third album, A Night to Remember, that she concentrated all of her attention on becoming a self-consciously "mature" singer/songwriter. A Night to Remember doesnt always work, but not because shes incapable of performing polished, well-crafted middle-of-the-road material -- "Time After Time" and "True Colors" prove that she could convincingly deliver ballads. Instead, the album bogs down because it assumes that labored arrangements and precisely detailed production are tantamount to musical sophistication. That said, there are some moments -- such as the seductive "I Drove All Night" -- that make a lasting impression, illustrating what Lauper was attempting to achieve with the record.

Twelve Deadly Cyns… and Then Some : Allmusic album Review : Regrettably bypassing the Top Ten hit "The Goonies R Good Enough," Twelve Deadly Cyns features almost all of Cyndi Laupers Top 40 hits, tacking on a handful of new tracks at the end, including "Hey Now (Girls Still Wanna Have Fun)," an updated version of her breakthrough hit single, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." As hits collections go, the album is fine, but with the exception of the ballad "True Colors" and the pop confection "Change of Heart," all of her finest songs and biggest hits were on Shes So Unusual, which is a more consistent and entertaining album.

Sisters of Avalon : Allmusic album Review : Cyndi Lauper made a valiant effort to jump start her career with the varied and eclectic Sisters of Avalon. Working with producer Mark Saunders, Lauper attempts to work worldbeat, adult alternative, and even trip-hop influences into her trademark adult contemporary pop, and while the results arent always successful, the record is the most intriguing and rewarding album she made since True Colors.

At Last : Allmusic album Review : As the girl who just wants to have fun, Cyndi Lauper became an 80s music icon with her flamboyant style, powerful baby-doll voice, and quirky songs, but as time and tastes moved on, her playful persona wore thin and attempts at becoming a more serious artist failed to regain her dwindling audience. With At Last, Lauper steps even further away from that playful image to become the girl who just wants to sing as she tackles a set of pop standards that showcase her underrated voice. Although occasionally shrill and reckless, Laupers forceful tones can be quite moving and awe-inspiring when corralled into the proper setting, as with her bluesy take on Etta James "At Last." With its lazy tempo and minimal arrangement, Lauper is able to relax and convey the lyrics in one of her most mature and affecting performances. Even more low-key is the whisper quiet of "Walk on By," in which she turns Dionne Warwicks midtempo gem into a dark tale of mourning by sadly singing the lyrics over a crawling tempo. Getting a Tori Amos-style ballad treatment is the Animals "Dont Let Me Be Misunderstood," which lets Laupers rock roots rise to the surface with her edgy performance. While some of her song choices work, others fall flat, like "La Vie en Rose," in which her slightly ragged reading is too rough for the delicate song. Also misfiring is her corny duet with Tony Bennett, "Makin Whoopee," where the voices of these two New Yorkers clash like stripes and plaids. Lauper also has a little too much fun with Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs "Stay," as she reverts back to her boisterous voice of yesteryear and disrupts the mature tone of the disc. Although the results are mixed, At Last does focus on Cyndi Laupers best asset -- her voice -- and may help to rejuvenate a career in which the personality unfortunately overshadowed the talent.

The Body Acoustic : Allmusic album Review : Cyndi Lauper looks back at her hits on The Body Acoustic, with a number of guests including Adam Lazzara, Shaggy, Sarah McLachlan, Vivian Green, Ani DiFranco, and Jeff Beck. Conceptually, this looks like a disaster. Alanis Morissette did it as well and the results were mixed at best. But Lauper has always possessed a talent that goes beyond the material she has sung -- and she can sing anything. The album is produced by Lauper with Rick Chertoff and William Wittman -- who recorded and mixed the disc. Laupers band is a wide and varied assortment that includes contemporary jazz bassist Mark Egan. "Money Changes Everything," with Lazzara, is a down-home calypso and country ramble. "All Through the Night," with Shaggy, begins as an Appalachian folk tune until Shaggy begins toasting and Lauper shifts it into ballad gear. Its a conflicting set of styles thats held together in the genuine ache of her voice. "Time After Time" would be a beautiful song in anybodys hands. Here, with McLachlan, she goes down into the tunes lyrics and abandons the drama of the original for the intimacy of its words. The human heart becomes the interlocutor of memory and loss. Lauper and McLachlan trade verses as 12-strings, muted drums, and space define the place where lost love becomes the center of the question of devotion across time and space. "She Bop" is almost a blues song, and as a result it reveals deep eroticism as the pleasures and sweet release of masturbation fall from the singers voice like raw honey. And so it goes with "Above the Clouds," as Becks trademark biting tone is juxtaposed against piano and space. This is a ballad that actually hurts. Its drama is realized in Laupers phrasing and Becks playing bites harder accentuating it -- relaxed, slow, and deeply emotive. "Sisters of Avalon" features soul chanteuse Green and DiFranco. Its funky as hell. Deep roiling bass pops and drones with acoustic guitars, fiddles, and a dulcimer moving through and around it. The drums fall just behind the beat as the singer goes for the crack in the lyrical spine of the track. The chorus-like refrain punches up its drama. Green takes her verse before an instrumental slide guitar interlude, and her wailing voice makes it among the albums best. Lauper sings without friends on a number of cuts as well, such as the beautiful "Colors" and the stunning "Fearless." This may be a slanted look at a greatest-hits package, but it comes off as an entirely new album full of adventure, grit, polish, and soul.

Original Album Classics : Allmusic album Review : Original Album Classics bundles the first five albums from Cyndi Lauper, all of which were released on the Epic label: the several-times-platinum Shes So Unusual (1983), the double-platinum True Colors (1986), A Night to Remember (1989), Hat Full of Stars (1993), and Sisters of Avalon (1996). The set consists of the five albums -- as they were originally released, in standard jewel cases -- within a basic cardboard sleeve. While the later albums are uneven, Lauper was one of the more underrated vocalists of the era, and the set initially retailed for slightly less than the cost of two full-price CDs.

Bring Ya to the Brink : Allmusic album Review : Its hard to see any real pattern in Cyndi Laupers recording career, as she bounces from style to style, sometimes with her eye on the charts but more often following her own muse. Released in the summer of 2008, Bring Ya to the Brink is her first album of original material to be released in the U.S. since 1997s Sisters of Avalon, and she hasnt exactly been quiet since then, doing collections of cabaret covers; releasing Shine, a pop album that wound up surfacing only in Japan; and reworking her own songs on The Body Acoustic, a 2005 album far more adventurous than its description suggests. Although it doesnt sound much like The Body Acoustic, Bring Ya to the Brink continues with that sense of adventure, as Lauper indulges in her first full-on dance album ever here. Unlike her contemporary Madonna, who has also been pursuing hardcore dance albums with Confessions on a Dance Floor and Hard Candy, Cyndi Lauper couldnt be bothered with sounding hip or contemporary -- which isnt quite the same thing as saying that she sounds preserved in amber on Bring, as this isnt a self-conscious 80s revival album even if it is filled with retro synths and drum machines. Rather, its a reflection of how Lauper is so removed from the whims of fashion that she can create her own world, borrowing from early-80s new wave and sleek early-90s club music, writing lyrics that may be better suited to a confessional but work well here, as this is such an idiosyncratic little record, existing in its own little time warp. Perhaps this could have used a greater quotient of pop hooks in order to pull in listeners who arent hardcore Lauper fans, but thats not where Cyndi Lauper is at: shes doggedly following her own path, and if you look back on what shes done in the nearly 25 years since Shes So Unusual, its quite an interesting journey. Bring Ya to the Brink is one of the more intriguing detours along the way.

Playlist: The Very Best of Cyndi Lauper : Allmusic album Review : Although her goofy, thrift shop sense of fashion made her seem like a cartoon character at times, Cyndi Lauper was one of the bright spots in the early days of MTV, and her songs displayed a sharp, savvy pop edge that has given the best of them a rare kind of staying power, and theyve held up better through the years than most songs from the new wave era. This set has all her key singles, most of them drawn from her wonderful first album, 1983s Shes So Unusual. "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," "Money Changes Everything," "All Through the Night," the gorgeous "Time After Time," and "True Colors" -- theyre all here.

Memphis Blues : Allmusic album Review : There is no doubt that Cyndi Lauper can sing almost anything and make it not only compelling, but her own (and she has, many times, whether her albums sold or not). Arguing her gift as a vocalist is pointless. That said, her sense of direction is always a question. Thanks to her appearance on the television program Celebrity Apprentice, her public profile is once more part of mainstream pop culture. So of all the albums to make -- Memphis Blues is her eleventh -- why a blues record now? True, she gets help from some big names: Charlie Musselwhite, Allen Toussaint, B.B. King, Ann Peebles, and Jonny Lang, but in the end, she has to carry these performances herself. The set begins with Little Walter Jacobs "Just Your Fool" featuring Musselwhites muscular harmonica, but Laupers vocal is thin, reedy, and doesnt carry authority in the lyric -- particularly not when juxtaposed against that harmonica. Far better is Louis Jordans "Early in the Morning" with King and Toussaint. The interplay between the latters rumbling, New Orleans R&B; piano and the formers sparse but mean lead guitar works well with Laupers vocal, especially with the tunes humorous lyrics. "Romance in the Dark" is one of three cuts Lauper and her band cut without any cameos, and it works wonderfully. Its slow, nocturnal, languidly sexy feel underscores her strengths as a singer. The uptempo, soul-drenched "Dont Cry No More" works equally well, thanks to her having to get atop a rollicking Stax-style horn section and testify. "Rollin and Tumblin," with Peebles, is strong and authoritative; its a unique version even if their voices dont always meld. Her two selections with Lang are as cliched and nondescript as electric blues gets these days: a waste. There is real beauty in "Mother Earth," however, with Toussaint playing his most sympathetic, in-the-cut blues piano as a horn section matches Laupers unique, off-kilter phrasing and winds it into the blues. In the end, while Memphis Blues does have some fine moments, the uneven ones makes it feel like a squandered opportunity at a popular comeback.

Detour : Allmusic album Review : A spiritual sequel of sorts to Memphis Blues, Detour finds Cyndi Lauper swapping out blues for country & western. The "western" part of the equation is crucial to Detour, a record equally enamored of cowboy camp as it is of Music City craft and corn. Such a wide purview is testament to Laupers taste-savvy show biz sensibilities, but by balancing ballads with riotous romps, she winds up with a bit of a mess on her hands. On their own, the slow-burning-torch set pieces of "End of the World" and "I Fall to Pieces" have their charms -- they offer ample evidence of Laupers nuance and control, elements that are often underrated -- but when paired with the ferocious, mincing wink of "Youre the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly," "Cowboy Sweetheart," and "Detour," the spell is broken. Matters arent helped much by the presence of Dolly Partons "Hard Candy Christmas" -- a fine, faithful rendition that closes off the record on a sweet note --= and the crisp, digital modern sheen of the opener "Funnel of Love," elements that pull Detour even further down a winding backroad. Such sudden shifts in tone might work better on-stage than they do on record, and with its cavalcade of guest stars, Detour often does play a bit like a stage revue, for better or worse. After all, much of Laupers charm lies in her innate theatricality, and when shes paired with someone who shares her humor -- Emmylou Harris on "Detour" and, especially, Vince Gill on "Youre the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly" -- theres a crackling vitality that nevertheless winds up diluting the diva showstoppers, something that could possibly be finessed on-stage but seems like a sharp turn on record. Nevertheless, on a track-by-track level, Detour has a few stumbles -- the biggest is "Night Life," and thats due to the gravelly growl of Willie Nelson, not Lauper -- and if its taken as a collection of performances and not a coherent record, its fun. |
