Faithless
Allmusic Biography : A prime house-pop group and consistent club act, Faithless is at its core a duo of producers Rollo and Sister Bliss. Before the group officially came together in 1995, Rollo had produced a club hit ("Dont You Want Me" as Felix in 1992), plus an album for Kristine W. and remixes for the Pet Shop Boys, Björk, and Simply Red. Sister Bliss, a piano and violin prodigy from the age of five, converted to acid house in 1987, and quickly became one of the U.K.s best house DJs, also recording several singles as herself. Though the two had begun producing together as early as 1993, Faithless became a stable quartet two years later with the addition of vocalists Jamie Catto (previously in the Big Truth Band) and Maxi Jazz (from the Soul Food Cafe Band).

Faithless reached worldwide status quickly, with the 1994 singles "Salva Mea" (one of the biggest dance hits of the year), "Insomnia," and "Reverence." The debut Faithless album, also titled Reverence, appeared in late 1996 on Rollos Cheeky Records, and was picked up for distribution by Arista the next year. Sunday 8pm followed in 1998, reaching number ten in Britain and lofting several of its club hits into the pop charts, including "Bring My Family Back," "Take the Long Way Home," and the Top Ten "God Is a DJ." (It was reissued the following year with a collection of remixes titled Saturday 3am.) A comedown mix album, Back to Mine, appeared in early 2001, just before Faithless released Outrospective, album number three, in June. Sparked by a pair of British hits, "We Come 1" and "One Step Too Far" (the latter featuring Dido on vocals), Outrospective charted across Europe and was certified platinum.

In 2004, the band released the quieter than usual No Roots, with a new member (LSK) adding vocals. Two years later Faithless returned with 2006s To All New Arrivals. Featuring guest vocals from Robert Smith and Cat Power, the album failed to make the British Top Ten unlike their previous album. The Dance saw Faithless make a comeback in 2010, but even with a high-profile show at that years Glastonbury Festival, the album became their last. In 2011, Maxi Jazz announced via their website that the band would come to an end. Faithless played their final live dates at Londons Brixton Academy in April 2011.

Within just a few years, however, the band made a comeback, playing several open-air venues during the summer of 2015 and releasing a remix album, Faithless 2.0, in September. The album included reworkings by a host of the biggest names in dance music, including Avicii, Tiësto, Rudimental, Armin Van Buuren, Eric Prydz, Above & Beyond, and Booka Shade. It also included several new originals from the band.

Reverence : Allmusic album Review : Maxi Jazz, the maestro behind Faithless, is well titled as "the grand oral disseminator." The tales he spins make this album a manifesto, religious experience, sexual escapade, and 24-hour rave all rolled up into one tightly constructed package. As Jazz explored hip-hop through the 1980s and his path converged with dub superstar Jah Wobble, the ultra funky Jamiroquai, and the Soul II Soul amalgamation (among others), the foundation was laid for the delicious blend of genres and sounds that would break through in the mid-90s. Reverence is the culmination of all those experiences, as Jazz unleashes a fat packet worth of songs that are really an acid house tapestry in disguise. This album is best heard in one sitting, where all its styles work together to tell the story. But break it apart, peel the layers back, and the songs stand alone as well. The hypnotic title track serves nicely as an introduction, before its waylaid by the downtempo soul ballad "Dont Leave," which is replete with needle, pops, and skips throughout. "Salva Mea," "Insomnia," and "Dirty Ol Man," three very different songs, tangle themselves together and pick up the thread from "Reverence." "Angeline," meanwhile, emerges as a perfectly impassioned love song. The U.S. release includes the bonus "Monster Mix Radio Edit" of "Insomnia." Maxi Jazz hits a deep chord with this album. Its clubby enough for the kiddies, but is incredibly complex beyond the dancefloor. The songs are great, the beats are compelling, and its almost impossible to not bounce around the room while listening. But this album is also a collection of shadows, of mirror images, where songs mimic one another before spinning off to do their own thing. Moments are caught and lost, tangled, and straightened out. Really, its brilliant.

Sunday 8pm : Allmusic album Review : The second album from U.K. electronic dance collective Faithless, Sunday 8pm has neither the rampant grooves nor the arrogant idealism to qualify it as anything more than a random, standard dancefloor record with redundant beats and hoary ideas. Clearly, though, more was intended; the theme running throughout Sunday 8pm is one that celebrates club life with an almost religious enthusiasm. The dreamy soundscapes here alternate between elegantly spiritual (and very new age) drifts and dull, tuneless forays into spacy nowhereland -- and the occasional misguided R&B trips lack soul (not all that surprising, considering the coldness of this bands electronica). The one keeper is "God Is a DJ," eight minutes of club worship that repeats the refrain "This is my church" so relentlessly that you begin to wonder if the Faithless altar includes a turntable and synthesizer along with the usual celebratory offerings.

Outrospective : Allmusic album Review : Precisely when they needed to reach down their own throats and pull out some high-energy guts and glory, Faithless returned to offer one more sham: trance comedown into meaningless muttering and patented plasticine R&B. Thing is, while theres something to be said about understatement, Rollo and Sister Bliss -- being Rollo and Sister Bliss -- seem perennially preoccupied with chasing the tail of clubland zeitgeist, lacking ingenuity to recapture either their "Insomnia" or "God Is a DJ" ethereal highs, to ever get their heads around such a concept. Outrospective is a veritable cesspit of introspection, happy to dish out varying MOR versions of Angelo Badalamentis oeuvre, and gawk at the way sagging comeback singles like "We Come 1" flatline the whimsy of Underworlds "Oich Oich" with an utter lack of abandon.

No Roots : Allmusic album Review : Not that it was a valid argument before, but with the release of No Roots you cant say "every Faithless album sounds the same" any longer. The 15 tracks are broken into two suites -- seven tracks each -- with a remix of "Mass Destruction" tacked onto the end. Both suites focus on love: love of people, love of humanity, love of peace. Theres plenty of conviction, plenty of message, and very little for the club. Headphone-friendly, the album is the best showcase yet for Rollo and Sister Bliss (the musical half of Faithless), as the music (all in the key of C by the way) is stunning. Polished and purposeful, the tunes glide one to the next effortlessly, making this the most thought-out Faithless album yet. Mood is the thing and as a result only a few tracks -- "Mass Destruction," "I Want You More, Pt. 2," "Miss U Less, See U More" -- stand out on their own. But if the album isnt as powerful as one would have hoped, its very personal. Its a good move since everybody knows the band can churn out a fluffy banger like "Insomnia" anytime they want; now the bands zealous fans finally make sense to an outsider. The album is for the fans, and maybe newcomers with patience and a penchant for wandering introspection. New vocalist LSKs cool reggae toasting mixes well with Maxi Jazzs conversational style, and "You aint going to nirvana -- or far-vana" is the only lyric thatll cause cringes. More than a placeholder, No Roots is a satisfying album thats like the kid on the cover. Its lovable but requires attention and commitment.

Forever Faithless: The Greatest Hits : Allmusic album Review : Having been making music for over ten years (their first single, "Salva Mea," hit British airwaves in 1995), English club superstars Faithless celebrated their longevity by issuing Forever Faithless, a greatest-hits compilation that contains nearly all of their singles ("Take the Long Way Home," "Crazy English Summer," and "If Lovin You Is Wrong" are missing) as well as one brand new track, "Reasons (Saturday Night)" (the U.K. version has two more that arent on here). And while most of the songs fall easily into the house realm, there are a few -- "Dont Leave," "Mass Destruction" -- that venture into pop and trip-hop (or perhaps trip-pop) and show off the bands versatility, or at least ability to appeal to a wider swatch of people. There arent really any surprises on Forever Faithless, and the selections are pretty much spread out between all four of the groups full-length releases -- meaning that if you already own them theres not much of a reason to get this album except for the new track, which is good but not exceptional -- but it makes for a very successful overview of the band nonetheless.

To All New Arrivals : Allmusic album Review : Following their number one greatest-hits collection Forever Faithless from the previous year, Faithless released their fifth studio album, To All New Arrivals, at the end of 2006 while the former was still enjoying its extended run on the charts. Chartwise, it was a step backward for the band that had been progressively reaching higher and higher, culminating in the chart-topping album No Roots. The album title referred to the new babies in the families of bandmembers Rollo and Sister Bliss, but could have equally referred to the tracks, most of which feature collaborations including Harry Collier, Robert Smith from the Cure, Cat Power, and former member Dido on the track "Last This Day." The album opens with a phone call that could have been made from the Twin Towers in 2001, a womans voice saying "If I dont get out of this, I just want you to know that I really really love you." Then the track "Bombs" moves into trance territory, with an antiwar political message and a chorus that declares there is "so much love, so much pain, so much more than I thought could ever contain." Smith is featured on the track "Spiders, Crocodiles & Kryptonite," with a pulsing beat, distressed children sounds, and a sample of his own number "Lullaby" -- there are also harmonies that remind one of Massive Attacks "Unfinished Symphony." Its pleasant to hear Dido back on a Faithless track, but unfortunately the song "Last This Time" does not have a tune, and the title track -- although backed by a pulsing dance beat -- comes across as a little too preachy, informing the listener how many children die in the world per year from malnutrition, malaria, or other preventable causes. There are three instrumentals, the repetitive tinkling "Nates Tune," the trancelike "I Hope," and the final track, "Emergency," which throws everything including the kitchen sink into a seven-minute soundscape, but ultimately leaves one feeling dissatisfied that Faithless have offered so much more in the past, and could have on this album as well.

Insomnia: The Best of Faithless : Allmusic album Review : One of the few dance acts who are able to actually sell albums, Faithless sold an impressive one million copies of their 2005 Forever Faithless hits collection, thanks to their blend of Sister Bliss dancefloor mentality, Rollos epic production and Maxi Jazzs hypnotic vocal delivery. Four years later, and with just one more studio album under their belt, the Röyksopp-influenced To All New Arrivals, they return with a second compilation, Insomnia: The Best of Faithless. But while the two-disc, 30-track set is undoubtedly more comprehensive, the fact that it fails to include any cuts from their previous LP renders it a tad unnecessary. And by omitting five of their 16 Top 40 singles, including the highly politicized "Mass Destruction" and the Philly soul-influenced "Muhammad Ali," its also nowhere near as hit-laden. However, with a track list compiled from their four studio albums, it does provide a chance for casual fans to investigate the band further. And while theres no new material included, several tracks appear in remixed form, such as Way Out Wests breakbeat reworking of "Salva Mea" and the haunting Nightmares on Wax version of "Killers Lullaby." Of the singles, the standouts include "God Is a DJ" and "Insomnia," which showcase their signature, anthemic trance sound. "One Step Too Far" is a gorgeous slice of subtle electronica featuring longtime collaborator Dido, and "Dont Leave" is a gospel-influenced ballad: a reminder that theyre just as convincing on their less dance-inspired moments. The dreamy, synth-led "Swingers," the eerie sci-fi-sounding "Drifting Away," and the acoustic trip-hop of "Evergreen" are the highlights of the album tracks. Whereas Forever Faithless reminded everyone just what a great singles band they are, Insomnia reveals that they are a pretty consistent album band, too. But with several notable omissions and a lack of any recent material, Insomnia ultimately fails to paint the full picture of their illustrious 13-year career.

The Dance : Allmusic album Review : Returning to their club roots after the understated chillout of last album To All New Arrivals, Faithless sixth studio album, The Dance, has been described by the band as "the danciest album theyve ever created." The 2010 LP, their first on their own Nates Tunes label, was originally only available digitally and via grocery chain Tesco before being released in other outlets. Featuring collaborations with Blancmange, Dougy Mandagi, and regular vocalist Dido, it includes the singles "Not Going Home," "Tweak Your Nipple," and "Feelin Good."
