Fatboy Slim | ||
Allmusic Biography : Norman Quentin Cook, best known as Fatboy Slim, is easily one of the most successful dance artists of all time. Hes scored numerous international chart hits with his hook-heavy, party-friendly tracks, often accompanied by innovative, subversive music videos, and he remains one of the worlds most in-demand DJs. Building on the sample-based sound of his previous projects such as Beats International and Mighty Dub Katz, Cooks work as Fatboy Slim -- filled with boisterous breakbeats and pilfered guitar riffs (among other ear-catching sounds) -- helped usher in the big beat movement during the mid-90s. 1998s Youve Come a Long Way, Baby, containing major hits such as "The Rockafeller Skank" and "Praise You," was a multi-platinum success and one of the years most critically acclaimed albums. Fatboys success continued with 2000s Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars, in addition to mix albums like 2002s Live on Brighton Beach. Following 2004s relatively downbeat Palookaville, Cook formed the collaboration-heavy project Brighton Port Authority. Along with David Byrne, he released the 2010 concept album Here Lies Love, which was later turned into an off-Broadway musical. While more active as a DJ than a producer during the EDM boom of the 2010s, Fatboy continued sporadically releasing singles during the decade, scoring a major U.K. hit with 2013s "Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat." Born Quentin Leo Cook in Bromley, England, on July 31, 1963, he joined the Hull-based pop group the Housemartins in 1986, replacing founding member Ted Key. After the group split in 1988, Cook became involved with the burgeoning acid house scene, pairing with producers Tim Jeffrey and J.C. Reid toward the end of the decade to form Pizzaman. The trio issued three Top 40 hits together ("Trippin on Sunshine," "Sex on the Streets," and "Happiness") before Cook splintered off to record with similarly styled outfits Freak Power and Beats International in the early 90s. He shut most of his other production activities down in the following years to focus on his solo project as Fatboy Slim, which began with a trio of singles and the full-length Better Living Through Chemistry. Cook was also called in to add his remixing skills to Jean-Jacques Perreys proto-electronica classic "E.V.A.," released as a 12" and CD single in 1997. In addition to his FBS work, Cook also recorded the Skip to My Loops sample CD, a popular studio tool sporting a mélange of sample-ready drum loops, analog squelches, and assorted noises. In early 1998, his remix of Cornershops "Brimful of Asha" spent several weeks at number one in the British charts. Fatboy Slims eagerly anticipated second LP, Youve Come a Long Way, Baby, followed later that year. The album went platinum in the U.S. and spawned four international hits, most notably "The Rockafeller Skank" and "Praise You," which also boasted a Spike Jonze-directed video that earned three MTV Video Music Awards as well as two Grammy nominations. Songs from Youve Come a Long Way, Baby ended up on countless soundtracks and commercials, cementing Fatboy Slims unique position as a critically acclaimed and immensely popular act. Cook also recorded several mix albums, including the first disc of the Radio 1 compilation Essential Selection, Vol. 1 and his own On the Floor at the Boutique. The latter was released domestically in the U.S. in early 2000 to help fans withstand the wait for his third album, Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars, which arrived that fall. The album included hit collaborations with Macy Gray ("Demons") and Bootsy Collins ("Weapon of Choice," which had an award-winning video featuring Christopher Walken). Two mix albums -- Live on Brighton Beach and Big Beach Boutique II -- appeared in 2002. During 2003, Cook and his wife -- popular British TV presenter Zöe Ball -- separated for a brief period. They soon patched things up but the split was a heavy influence on 2004s Palookaville, the most laid-back and moody Fatboy Slim album yet. Collecting his singles along with a couple of important remixes, The Greatest Hits: Why Try Harder appeared in 2006. In 2008, Cook announced he would be retiring the Fatboy Slim name and launching a new project, Brighton Port Authority (or BPA for short), a musical concept group featuring special guest artists such as David Byrne, Iggy Pop, Dizzee Rascal, Martha Wainwright, and many more. BPA released the single "Toe Jam" in 2008. The following year, the Fatboy Slim brand continued to pop up, such as on the mix CD Dance Bitch. Meanwhile, under the BPA moniker, Cook released I Think Were Gonna Need a Bigger Boat. His next project, released in 2010 as Fatboy Slim, involved production work, collaboration, and co-billing with Byrne on the Imelda Marcos concept release Here Lies Love. In 2011, he continued to tour across the globe, and in 2012 he was asked to perform at the London Olympics closing ceremony. The next year, Cook scored a U.K. Top Ten hit with "Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat," which featured Riva Starr, vocals by Beardyman, and a remix by Calvin Harris. Over the following years, he continued headlining festival stages and releasing remix sets. Two singles, "Where U Iz" and "Boom F**king Boom" (featuring Beardyman) appeared in 2017. Updated compilation The Best of Fatboy Slim was released in 2019.

Better Living Through Chemistry : Allmusic album Review : Fatboy Slim is one of DJ Norman Cooks many aliases, and has proven to be his most popular and successful yet. Although he consistently racks up dance hits in his native England (each under a different surname), he didnt achieve global success until the re-release of Better Living Through Chemistry in 1997. On the insistence of his friends the Chemical Brothers, Cook released the track "Going out of My Head" as the albums first single. Due to its popular video and instantly catchy sample from the Who classic "I Cant Explain," Cook earned his first U.S. hit. Another unlikely sample used to great effect was featured in the track "Michael Jackson," which used a snippet of Negativlands "Negativland." "The Weekend Starts Here" is similar to the Beastie Boys funk instrumentals, featuring distant organ and lazy harmonica blowing (which sounds an awful lot like the harmonica phrase at the beginning of Black Sabbaths "The Wizard"). Recommended to those who cant get enough of the popular technoid-sampled alternative dance style of the late 90s.

On the Floor at the Boutique : Allmusic album Review : The hook here isnt so much the big-beat compilation itself as it is the DJ who mixed the program -- none other than the funk soul brother himself, Fatboy Slim. Better known to those over 30 as Norman Cook, bass player for the Housemartins and later the brains behind the charming reggae-funk outfit Beats International, hes now the king of big beat, a club music subgenre dedicated to fat, stoopid beats and pure dancefloor fun. On the Floor at the Boutique was recorded live as Fatboy mixed it at Brighton, Englands Big Beat Boutique, and its guaranteed to ruin the carpet at any party. There are contributions from artists as established as Fred Wesley (with his Horny Horns, not the Famous Flames) and the Jungle Brothers, and as obscure as DJ Tonka (whose "Phun-Ky" is an album highlight) and Bassbin Twins. It should come as no surprise that Fatboy Slim himself delivers some of the best moments on the program, including the deeply weird "Michael Jackson" and his irresistible Top 40 hit "Rockafeller Skank." Outstanding.

You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby : Allmusic album Review : Fatboy Slims debut album, Better Living Through Chemistry, was one of the surprises of the big beat revolution of 1996 -- an eclectic blowout, all tracked to thunderous loops and masterminded by Norman Cook, a former member of the British pop band the Housemartins. It might not have been as startlingly fresh as the Chemical Brothers, but the hard-hitting beats and catchiness, not to mention consistency, of Better Living was a shock, and it raised expectations for Fatboy Slims second album, Youve Come a Long Way, Baby. And that record itself was something of a surprise, since it not only exceeded the expectations set by the debut, but came damn close to being the definitive big beat album, rivaling the Chemicals second record, Dig Your Own Hole. The difference is, Cook is a record geek with extensive knowledge and eclectic tastes. His juxtapositions -- the album swings from hip-hop to reggae to jangle pop, and then all combines into one sound -- are wildly original, even if the music itself doesnt break through the confines of big beat. Then again, when a record is this forceful and catchy, it doesnt need to break new stylistic ground -- the pleasure is in hearing a master work. And theres no question that Cook is a master of sorts -- Youve Come a Long Way, Baby is a seamless record, filled with great imagination, unexpected twists and turns, huge hooks, and great beats. Its the kind of record that gives big beat a good name.

The Fatboy Slim/Norman Cook Collection : Allmusic album Review : Before setting global music charts afire with his Fatboy Slim alias, Norman Cook was merging his love of 70s funk breaks with classic Jamaican dub sound system rhythms. Shortly following his stint with UK indie popsters the Housemartins, Cook founded Beats International as a creative outlet for his growing interest in dance music. Using studio musicians, rappers, vintage vinyl recordings, and samples, he fashioned clever, catchy pop tunes that were to become the basis for the genre now known as "funky breaks." This collection compiles some of the high points of the Beats International catalog with some of Cooks other early production credits and remixes. Cooks debt to Jamaican producers is clearly indicated by "Tribute to King Tubby," a homage to the slain dub remix innovator, while on "Echo Chamber," he juxtaposes a Steve Miller vocal refrain with ragga vocalizations and a house-styled 4/4 pulse. This unlikely combination of sources is held together by a relaxed, dubbed-out production. Cook also borrows from French electronic music pioneers such as Jean Jacques Perry; of particular interest is the remix of Perrys "E.V.A.," which mixes kitsch melodies from a Moog synthesizer with an uptempo hip hop break.

Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars : Allmusic album Review : The cover of Norman Cooks breakout Fatboy Slim album, Youve Come a Long Way, Baby, was a good clue to the contents, picturing as it did thousands of LPs straining the racks in Cooks record room -- undoubtedly just a small portion of his massive collection of sampling material. Inside, Cook unfolded a party record for the ages, long on fun (though understandably short on staying power), chock full of samples pillaged from all manner of obscure soul shouters and old-school rap crews, triggered and tweaked ad nauseam. With his third LP, Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars, Fatboy Slims Norman Cook pulls away slightly from the notoriously fickle pop charts and crossover kids courted on his last record. Instead, he makes a conscious attempt to inject some real hedonism back into the world of dance -- he is a DJ, after all. After a short intro, Cook tears into an acid techno rampage named "Star 69," a track that takes few prisoners and sounds closer to Plastikman than Propellerheads. Despite the torrid pace set early on, theres still quite a bit of the used-bin scavenger left in Cook; the most patented big beat anthems here, "Ya Mama" and "Mad Flava," include all the expected displays of crowd-moving hip-hop calls, unhinged beatbox funk, continual drum breakdowns, and plenty of rawk riffs. The first single, "Sunset (Bird of Prey)," is another potential crossover move, featuring what is easily the albums most recognizable sample source -- Jim Morrison from the Doors. Sniffy electronica purism aside, though, Cook remains, if not the best overall producer in the dance world, certainly in its top rank. Cook recruited collaborators for the first time -- nu-soul diva Macy Gray, funk legend Bootsy Collins, fellow superstar DJ/producer Roger Sanchez -- and the two tracks with Gray, "Love Life" and "Demons," are the highlights of the album. Cooks ample production talents are served best with a vocalist lending focus, and "Love Life" is a seven-minute ride veering from dirty, warped funk to noise-heavy hip-hop breakdowns while Gray scats, growls, and purrs with clearly audible glee. In all, Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars is possibly Norman Cooks best possible statement after being -- nearly simultaneously -- picked up by a multitude of notoriously fickle pop consumers and thrown away by his previously rock-solid dance fanbase.

Live on Brighton Beach : Allmusic album Review : Not just the second live mix album from Brightons favorite son, but his second actually recorded in the city thats taken him under its wing, Live on Brighton Beach concentrates less on the funk nuggets that made his inland mix, On the Floor at the Boutique. Despite his recent pop crossovers on the production front (or perhaps, as a result of them), Norman Cook is still one of the best party DJs in the world, unafraid to spin the big hits (Underworlds "Born Slippy Nuxx," Basement Jaxxs "Wheres Your Head At," his own "Right Here Right Now") for big reactions. Still, Cook also drops some amazing obscurities, like the disco burner "Southern Thing" by Scanty and "The Talk" by underrated Chicago house producer Harrison Crump. Regardless of whether its a familiar track or a newer dubplate, Live on Brighton Beach gets everyone down in fine fashion, and makes for a much better listen than most of Fatboy Slims production works.

Palookaville : Allmusic album Review : Looking back on Fatboy Slims discography, Palookaville is up against some stiff competition, which makes it the low point only because it isnt another beginning-to-end stunner. The Fatboy himself -- Norman Cook -- had given plenty of hints in the press before the albums release that this was going to be different. He went through marriage problems and declared a renewed interest in hip-hop over dance music, dance being a genre he sees as going through another dry period. Still, this isnt a "forget everything you know about..." album since the jittery "Slash Dot Dash" and "Jin Go Lo Ba" sound like old outtakes. Theyre the lesser tracks on an album that could have been tighter had Cook not played it safe by including them. Theres so much more heart in the non-club numbers, with each one sounding inspired and full of that quirky Fatboy flair. A cover of Steve Millers "The Joker" with Bootsy Collins on vocals is brilliant fun and the most direct example of the rolling along despite the nasty weather, naked hippy feel of the album. When Cook brings it down, he brings to mind the best of Tranquility Bass, just a lot more fun and approachable. For its hook, "Dont Let the Man Get You Down" uses the "long-haired freaky people" line from Five Man Electrical Bands "Signs" and guest singer Lateefs two appearances are nothing short of frolicsome. They offer the trippy ying to the marriage problem yang of "Put It Back Together" with Damon Albarn, and the intentionally maudlin "North West Three" (the first address where the recently patched-it-up Cook and Zoe Ball lived together). That "North West Three" samples from a husband-and-wifes record (John and Beverley Martyns "Primrose Hill") is just one of Palookavilles deeper-than-before ideas. There are scars here, but with only hints of the specifics, you can apply Cooks heartbreak to any hurt of your own. Palookaville could stand one more trimming pass, but it gives Cooks canon the needed depth. Now theres a Fatboy Slim record for that rainy day and one the long-haired freaky people can enjoy.

Dance Bitch : Allmusic album Review : The mix album Dance Bitch was released in honor of Fatboy Slims 2009 tour of Australia, landing just as Norman Cook was supposedly retiring the moniker in favor of his new project, the Brighton Port Authority. Being exclusive to the land down under shouldnt be taken as a fault since this one is right up there with all his global releases, falling somewhere between his Bondi Beach: New Years Eve 06 mix and the great On the Floor at the Boutique from 1998. Funky breaks from Chromeo and a remixed Santogold bring the big beat sound into 2009, slightly older tracks from X-Press 2 and Aquasky provide some familiarity, and the Chemical Brothers "Hey Boy, Hey Girl" is the past and future wrapped into one thanks to the Soulwax remix. The speaker-ripping bassline from "First Stroke" by John Acquaviva is a techno-based highlight, while Hervés "Cheap Thrills" blends old-school jungle beats with a sample of Michael Jacksons "Thriller," making it a brilliant track with a brilliant title. The BPAs own "Hes Frank" gives you the delicious experience of Iggy Pop singing an old Monochrome Set tune, and even if Cooks selections are now closer to the average Ministry of Sound compilation than the cutting edge, the mixing and pacing of the set deserves high praise.

Best of the Bootlegs : Allmusic album Review : Taking a rather relaxed approach to the concept of bootlegging, Brighton-based Skint Records chose not to consult their lawyers when they discovered an illegal remix of their star artist Fatboy Slims 2001 hit "Star 69" being sold on another labels download site. Instead, they contacted the culprit, Funkagenda, and offered to release it officially, a rather unprecedented move which kick-started the whole idea of this innovative 12-track compilation, Best of the Bootlegs. Featuring both specially sanctioned remixes from superstar DJs and unofficial bootlegs from unknown producers sourced from various websites, this floor-filling alternative to 2006s Why Try Harder: Greatest Hits, focuses on six of the multi-alias-using Norman Cooks biggest singles. Unsurprisingly, given his recent lack of chart success, its his earlier material which gets the reworked treatment, with three tracks apiece included from his 1999 number one album Youve Come a Long Way, Baby and his 2000 follow-up Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars. Despite being the least familiar tune, "Star 69" is featured in four different versions, from Funkagendas attention-grabbing "What the Fuck?" retitling (also remixed itself by Kim Fai), which tones down the originals booming rave in favor of minimal acid-house, to the pounding techno and Chemical Brothers-esque electronica of Ronarios "Rogue Eternal" production, respectively. But with such anthemic source material, it soon becomes apparent just how difficult it is for any of the contributors to put their own spin on the records. Indeed, despite the best efforts of Dutch chart-topper Fedde Le Grand and Riva Starr to inject some electro vibes into "Praise You," the former with a cavalcade of hypnotic bleeps, the latter with some abstract percussion, its only when the iconic, original, thudding piano chords kick in that the tracks come to life. Likewise with the epic, swirling strings and chopped-up vocal samples of Abel Ramos "To Brighton with Love" reworking of "Right Here Right Now," and the rockabilly guitars of the acidic, bass-heavy second-hand remix of Koen Groenevelds "Rockafeller Skank." There are a few remixes that work on their own merits, such as Markus Schulzs atmospheric trance interpretation of "Bird of Prey," which perfectly complements the sampled, trippy vocals of the Doors Jim Morrison, and Lazy Richs retooling of "Weapon of Choice," which retains its chaotic energy while also adding a slightly sinister edge, thanks to the ramped-up whispered vocals. But overall, the tendency to just add a few more pumping beats and keep the listener waiting for a few minutes before anything remotely resembling the original kicks in means Best of the Bootlegs is a much better idea in theory than it is in practice.

Here Lies Love : Allmusic album Review : A concept album based around the lives of Imelda Marcos and her nanny Estrella Cumpas, David Byrne and Fatboy Slims (Norman Cook) Here Lies Love is primarily a great pop record featuring a bevy of name female vocalists. Grand conceptual themes aside, Byrne, Slim, and Slim cohort Tom Gandey (aka Cagedbaby) have delivered a kooky, fun, theatrical, and -- more often than not -- deliriously listenable collection of 70s and 80s club pop. Inspired by a disparate set of sources, not the least of which included his reading of Ryszard Kapuscinskis book The Emperor as well as various reports detailing the former First Lady of the Philippines penchant for disco and club life, Byrne formulated this would-be stage production based around the notion -- as he says in the liner notes -- of the "bubble worlds of the rich and powerful" set to the popular sounds (disco, soul, Latin beats, cabaret) of Marcos time in power. While there is no dialogue in this production, Byrne has crafted each track throughout the album to tell the story and evoke the emotional state of Marcos and her longtime nanny Cumpas emotional state. And while the story hangs together quite well, the main impression you are left with is that Byrne and Slim have impeccable taste in female singers. Here we get British songstress Florence Welch (Florence and the Machine) delivering the title prologue track, an anthemic disco-inflected number that recalls any number of Studio 54 diva hits. Similarly, Tori Amos takes on the role of Marcos mother, Remedios, on the eerie flamenco-infused "Youll Be Taken Care Of." Along the way you get 80s pop icon Cyndi Lauper, alt-country-rocker Allison Moorer, Irish soul siren Roisin Murphy, Philly punk-dance singer Santigold, Natalie Merchant, Nellie McKay, Martha Wainwright, Sharon Jones, and others.

Fatboy Slim Presents Bem Brasil : Allmusic album Review : He certainly earned it, through hard work and talent, but in Fatboy Slims charmed life, you wake up, remember it is a World Cup year, associate that with Brazilian music, and then wind up with a summer tonic as delightful as Bem Brasil. Thats pretty much the story behind this double disc of "up" Brazilian dance music, minus the part where Fatboy phones up some friends for Brazilian-flavored exclusives, including Joey Negro, who whips Agoras "Celebration Suite" from a street rave-up to an intergalactic rave-up with Kraftwerk twerps and house musics solid boom. DJ Fresh bumps heads with Fatboy on the "Magalenha" remix and suddenly the girls from Ipanema are digging that deep dubstep grind, but Fedde Le Grand takes the cheeky, Fedde-esque way, and changes one word in his hit "Put Your Hands Up for Detroit," and little else. These big boomin tunes all come on disc one as disc two chills out with a set of after-hours numbers, including a version of Fatboys funky hit "Weapon of Choice" being driven by acoustic street carnival drums. Spiritual leader Gilberto Gil is here with his electro-gliding "Maracatu Atômico," while his "Toda Menina Baiana" goes future disco in a Ashley Beedle remix. All of it hangs together well enough for a pool party soundtrack with hard, and less hard, discs to choose from, so whether its a World Cup year or not, consider Fatboys big beat angle on Brazil anytime the temperature gets above 75 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees Celsius).
