| Allmusic Biography : The most popular exponent of the classic New Orleans R&B; sound, Fats Domino sold more records than any other black rock & roll star of the 1950s. His relaxed, lolling boogie-woogie piano style and easygoing, warm vocals anchored a long series of national hits from the mid-50s to the early 60s. Through it all, his basic approach rarely changed. He may not have been one of early rocks most charismatic, innovative, or threatening figures, but he was certainly one of its most consistent. Dominos first single, "The Fat Man" (1949), is one of the dozens of tracks that have been consistently singled out as a candidate for the first rock & roll record. As far as Fats was concerned, he was just playing what hed already been doing in New Orleans for years, and would continue to play and sing in pretty much the same fashion even after his music was dubbed "rock & roll." The record made number two on the R&B; charts, and sold a million copies. Just as important, it established a vital partnership between Fats and Imperial A&R; man Dave Bartholomew. Bartholomew, himself a trumpeter, would produce Dominos big hits, co-writing many of them with Fats. He would also usually employ New Orleans session greats like Alvin Tyler on sax and Earl Palmer on drums -- musicians who were vital in establishing New Orleans R&B; as a distinct entity, playing on many other local recordings as well (including hits made in New Orleans by Georgia native Little Richard). Domino didnt cross over into the pop charts in a big way until 1955, when "Aint That a Shame" made the Top Ten. Pat Boones cover of the song stole some of Fats thunder, going all the way to number one (Boone was also bowdlerizing Little Richards early singles for pop hits during this time). Dominos long-range prospects werent damaged, however; between 1955 and 1963, he racked up an astonishing 35 Top 40 singles. "Blueberry Hill" (1956) was probably his best (and best-remembered) single; "Walking to New Orleans," "Whole Lotta Loving," "Im Walking," "Blue Monday," and "Im in Love Again" were also huge successes. After Fats left Imperial for ABC-Paramount in 1963, he would only enter the Top 40 one more time. The surprise was not that Fats fell out of fashion, but that hed maintained his popularity so long while the essentials of his style remained unchanged. This was during an era, remember, when most of rocks biggest stars had their careers derailed by death or scandal, or were made to soften up their sound for mainstream consumption. Although an active performer in the ensuing decades, his career as an important artist was essentially over in the mid-60s. He did stir up a bit of attention in 1968 when he covered the Beatles "Lady Madonna" single, which had been an obvious homage to Fats style. | Here Stands Fats Domino : Allmusic album Review : As with most of Imperial Records LP releases on Fats Domino, this one reached across a lot of time for its dozen tracks, although the centerpiece was the hit "Im Walkin" in its first LP appearance. Also aboard was the latters B-side, "Im in the Mood for Love," but a lot of the rest dated from Dominos first Imperial sessions in December of 1949, making this something of an oldies album, or at least an excursion backward to a time and a sound from a decade earlier. Among the best of those cuts were the surprisingly elegant ballad "Hideaway Blues," with its supple piano trills, and the pounding rocker "Shes My Baby," which had been two sides of a single at the outset of the 50s; also of note are the slow blues "Brand New Baby," highlighted by Ernest McLeans understated lead guitar and some supremely subtle sax work, and the jaunty "Little Bee," a charmingly raunchy and suggestive number from his second Imperial session in January of 1950. | ||

| Let's Play Fats Domino : Allmusic album Review : Released in 1959 -- four years into Fats Dominos run as one of the most popular recording artists in America -- Lets Play Fats Domino is a typical Fats Domino album from the late 50s, meaning that its a terrifically entertaining listen. Like most of his 50s albums, this was assembled from a variety of sessions and contains a couple of hit singles. In this case, the hits are the cheerful minor hit "Margie," a rollicking "When the Saints Go Marching In," the jubilant yet defiant "Im Gonna Be a Wheel Someday," and the sweet "I Want to Walk You Home" -- only "Margie" is not one of his widely considered classics, but it holds its own nicely to three of his very finest sides, and the rest of the album also reaches similarly high standards. Theres the slow blues "You Left Me," the rip-roaring "Aint It Good," good versions of both "Ida Jane" and "Lil Liza Jane," and a variation of "Stagger Lee" with "Stack and Billy." It all adds up to nothing but a good time -- maybe its not the best Fats Domino album ever, but as its playing its hard to imagine listening to anything better than this. | ||

| They Call Me the Fat Man: The Legendary Imperial Recordings : Allmusic album Review : If you cant quite finance the Bear Family box, this four-disc compilation is the next best thing; an even 100 of the best Imperial sides, including a great many from 1958 on that turn up in crystal-clear stereo (as they also do on the Bear Family package). All the hits are aboard, along with a nice cross section of the important non-hits. The saxes (usually including Herb Hardesty and sometimes Lee Allen) roar with typical Crescent City power, Fats rolls the ivories, and magic happens -- over and over again! Another nice booklet with plenty of photos (but a less detailed discography without sideman credits). | ||

| Fats Is Back : Allmusic album Review : Like many of the early legends of rock & roll, Fats Domino didnt command a lot of attention in the late 60s. Not only had the British Invasion pushed Fats, Chuck, Little Richard, and their contemporaries off the charts, but post-1965 developments like psychedelia and folk-rock made straightforward rock & roll and rolling New Orleans R&B; sound a little old-fashioned. In other words, it was time for the first generation to stage a comeback. Producer Richard Perry never neglects the essentials of Fats music -- he retains the easygoing charm and endearing shuffles, just updating it slightly. In retrospect, Fats Is Back feels like Perrys blueprint for Ringo Starrs star-studded extravaganzas of the mid-70s -- he selects an impeccable set of songs, nearly all covers but not just relying on obvious selections, assembles a first-rate cast of musicians, and then puts on a show. After all, this is an album that begins with a roll call of Dominos greatest hits and then ends with "One More Song for You" -- its intended to be spectacular and it comes damn close to being one. Part of the reason Fats Is Back works is that its designed to entertain but never oversells itself -- sort of like the man himself, actually. Fats delivers tailor-made new songs, Barbara Georges "I Know," a remake of his classic "Im Ready," and two Beatles covers (McCartneys Fats tribute "Lady Madonna" and "Lovely Rita") with equal gusto. Years on from its initial release, Fats Is Back still sounds like a sly, endearing update of the classic Domino sound. It may not match his classic Imperial recordings, yet it will no doubt please anyone wishing to dig a little deeper. | ||
