Little Richard
Allmusic Biography : One of the original rock & roll greats, Little Richard merged the fire of gospel with New Orleans R&B;, pounding the piano and wailing with gleeful abandon. While numerous other R&B; greats of the early 50s had been moving in a similar direction, none of them matched the sheer electricity of Richards vocals. With his bullet-speed deliveries, ecstatic trills, and the overjoyed force of personality in his singing, he was crucial in upping the voltage from high-powered R&B; into the similar, yet different, guise of rock & roll. Although he was only a hitmaker for a couple of years or so, his influence upon both the soul and British Invasion stars of the 1960s was vast, and his early hits remain core classics of the rock repertoire.

Heavily steeped in gospel music while growing up in Georgia, when Little Richard began recording in the early 50s he played unexceptional jump blues/R&B; that owed a lot to his early inspirations Billy Wright and Roy Brown. In 1955, at Lloyd Prices suggestion, Richard sent a demo tape to Specialty Records, who were impressed enough to sign him and arrange a session for him in New Orleans. That session, however, didnt get off the ground until Richard began fooling around with a slightly obscene ditty during a break. With slightly cleaned-up lyrics, "Tutti Frutti" was the record that gave birth to Little Richard as he is now known -- the gleeful "woo!"s, the furious piano playing, the sax-driven, pedal-to-the-metal rhythm section. It was also his first hit, although, ridiculous as it now seems, Pat Boones cover version outdid Richards on the hit parade.

Boone would also try to cover Richards next hit, "Long Tall Sally," but by that time it was evident that audiences black and white much preferred the real deal. In 1956 and 1957, Richard reeled off a string of classic hits -- "Long Tall Sally," "Slippin and "Slidin," "Jenny, Jenny," "Keep a Knockin," "Good Golly, Miss Molly," "The Girl Cant Help It" -- that remain the foundation of his fame. While Richards inimitable mania was the key to his best records, he also owed a lot of his success to the gutsy playing of ace New Orleans session players like Lee Allen (tenor sax), Alvin Tyler (baritone sax), and especially Earl Palmer (drummer), who usually accompanied the singer in both New Orleans and Los Angeles studios. Richards unforgettable appearances in early rock & roll movies, especially The Girl Cant Help It, also did a lot to spread the rock & roll gospel to the masses.

Richard was at the height of his commercial and artistic powers when he suddenly quit the business during an Australian tour in late 1957, enrolling in a Bible college in Alabama shortly after returning to the States. Richard had actually been feeling the call of religion for a while before his announcement, but it was nonetheless a shock to both his fans and the music industry. Specialty drew on unreleased sessions for a few more hard-rocking singles in the late 50s, but Richard virtually vanished from the public eye for a few years. When he did return to recording, it was as a gospel singer, cutting a few little-heard sacred sides for End, Mercury, and Atlantic in the early 60s.

By 1962, though, Richard had returned to rock & roll, touring Britain to an enthusiastic reception. Among the groups that supported him on those jaunts were the Rolling Stones and the Beatles, whose vocals (Paul McCartneys especially) took a lot of inspiration from Richards. In 1964, the Beatles cut a knockout version of "Long Tall Sally," with McCartney on lead, that may have even outdone the original. Its been speculated that the success of the Beatles, and other British Invaders who idolized Richard, finally prompted the singer into making a full-scale comeback as an unapologetic rock & roller. Hooking up with Specialty once again, he had a small hit in 1964 with "Bama Lama Bama Loo." These and other sides were respectable efforts in the mold of his classic 50s sides, but tastes had changed too much for Richard to climb the charts again. He spent the rest of the 60s in a continual unsuccessful comeback, recording for Vee-Jay (accompanied on some sides by Jimi Hendrix, who was briefly in Richards band), OKeh, and Modern (for whom he even tried recording in Memphis with Stax session musicians).

It was the rock & roll revival of the late 60s and early 70s, though, that really saved Richards career, enabling him to play on the nostalgia circuit with great success (though he had a small hit, "Freedom Blues," in 1970). He had always been a flamboyant performer, brandishing a six-inch pompadour and mascara, and constant entertaining appearances on television talk shows seemed to ensure his continuing success as a living legend. Yet by the late 70s, hed returned to the church again. Somewhat predictably, he eased back into rock and show business by the mid-80s. Since then, hes maintained his profile with a role in Down and Out in Beverly Hills (the movies soundtrack also returned him to the charts, this time with "Great Gosh a-Mighty") and guest appearances on soundtracks, compilations, and childrens rock records. At this point its safe to assume that he never will get that much-hungered-for comeback hit, but he remains one of rock & rolls most colorful icons, still capable of turning on the charm and charisma in his infrequent appearances in the limelight. In 2017, his debut album, 1957s Heres Little Richard, was given a long-overdue reissue, accompanied by a bonus disc of demos and alternate takes.

Here’s Little Richard : Allmusic album Review : Little Richard had been making records for four years before he rolled into Cosimo Matassas J&M Studio in New Orleans and cut the epochal "Tutti Frutti" in the fall of 1955, but everything else hed done -- and much of what others had recorded -- faded into insignificance when Richard wailed "A wop bop a loo mop a lomp bomp bomp" and kicked off one of the first great wailers in rock history. In retrospect, Little Richards style doesnt seem so strikingly innovative as captured in 1956s Heres Little Richard -- his boogie-woogie piano stylings werent all that different from what Fats Domino had been laying down since 1949, and his band pumped out the New Orleans backbeat that would define the Crescent Citys R&B for the next two decades, albeit with precision and plenty of groove. But what set Richard apart was his willingness to ramp up the tempos and turn the outrage meter up to ten; "Tutti Frutti," "Rip It Up," and "Jenny Jenny" still sound outrageous a half-century after they were waxed, and its difficult but intriguing to imagine how people must have reacted to Little Richard at a time when African-American performers were expected to be polite, and the notion of a gay man venturing out of the closet simply didnt exist (Richards songs were thoroughly heterosexual on the surface, but the nudge and wink of "Tutti Frutti" and "Baby" is faint but visible, and his bop threads, mile-high process, and eye makeup clearly categorized him as someone "different"). These 12 tunes may not represent the alpha and omega of Little Richards best music, but every song is a classic and unlike many of his peers, time has refused to render this first album quaint -- Richards grainy scream remains one of the great sounds in rock & roll history, and the thunder of his piano and the frantic wail of the band is still the glorious call of a Friday night with pay in the pocket and trouble in mind. Brilliant stuff.

The Fabulous Little Richard : Allmusic album Review : With Little Richard having long since given up pop music for religion, Specialty Records released as his third album a collection of tracks recorded mostly at his first session in 1955 (with a few 1956 and 1957 recordings as well). Richard handles these R&B; songs well, but, with the exception of the medley "Kansas City/Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey" (later copied note for note by The Beatles), the songs and performances do not match his incendiary hits of the period.

Little Richard : Allmusic album Review : Little Richard was not only one of the first great stars of rock & roll, he was one of the young musics first great cultural affronts, and while he was selling records hand over first in 1955 and 1956, he seemed strange to squares in a way Chuck Berry or Fats Domino couldnt quite match, with his beyond-crazed performing style and ambiguous fashion sense. For Richards second LP, 1958s simply titled Little Richard, Specialty Records A&R men got the clever idea that by covering a few old standards, the Georgia Peach might win over some parents who had been put off by his earlier work. The flaw in this thinking was that by the time Richard got through with "Baby Face" and "By the Light of the Silvery Moon," they sounded like Little Richard tunes -- which is to say the vocals howled, the piano rang out like church bells on speed, and his band swung hard behind it all. Little Richard was every bit as rockin as his first album, if not more so; "Keep AKnockin," "Lucille," "Good Golly Miss Molly," and "The Girl Cant Help It" were hits for the right reason, "All Around the World" is still a clarion call for the power of the music (and most adults were probably not comforted by the songs proclamation that young fans of the big beat "never have time for romance/ they only wanna dance"), "Send Me Some Lovin" slows down the tempo while still laying out the good groove, "Ooh! My Soul" is deliciously lascivious, and there isnt a single throwaway among the 12 tunes on deck. Richards band (sadly unidentified by name) are in glorious form as well, and Cosimo Matassa (who recorded the bulk of these songs at his tiny J&M Studios in New Orleans) makes these sessions sound as raucous as they deserved. Little Richard was too crazed to win over many suspicious parents in 1958, but thankfully it wails loud enough that no one was likely to hear them complain, and it still gets the party started 50 years on.

His Biggest Hits : Allmusic album Review : This 12-track compilation of Little Richards mid-50s recordings did include most of his biggest hits, among them the pop Top Tens "Long Tall Sally," "Keep A-Knockin," "Jenny, Jenny," and "Good Golly, Miss Molly," and such rock & roll classics as "Rip It Up," "Tutti Frutti," and "Lucille." A few other great ones, notably "The Girl Cant Help It" and "Ready Teddy," inexplicably didnt make the cut, and a couple of non-hits did, but at the time of its release and for the following five years His Biggest Hits was the most complete Little Richard hits collection on the market.

The Explosive Little Richard : Allmusic album Review : In 1966, OKeh Records took its turn at trying to revive the recording career of Little Richard. In the fall of that year, they put him in a studio in Hollywood with his former Specialty Records associate Larry Williams producing, and the two cut this album of rock & roll ravers, which was released in January 1967. Little Richard is as frantic as ever, notably on the leadoff track, "I Dont Want to Discuss It," later a showstopper for Delaney & Bonnie, but rock music trends were far removed from his style of rocking abandon by 1967, and this album went unnoticed. OKeh recorded Little Richard doing his hits that January and released the results several months later as Greatest Hits Recorded Live, but that was the end of this comeback.

The Rill Thing : Allmusic album Review : The Rill Thing represented Little Richards most serious attempt at a comeback since his 1950s heyday. "Freedom Blues," Richards debut Reprise single, released in April 1970, was a mid-chart hit, his first in five years. "Greenwood Mississippi," released as a single concurrently with the album, also charted. Richard adopted a Cajun/country-rock approach (even covering "Lovesick Blues"), with a heavy beat and twangy guitar backing up his rough, forceful vocals. Despite the indulgence of the rambling ten-minute instrumental title track, the LP was a convincing update on his early work. But it did not propel Little Richard back to the top of the charts.

Well Alright! : Allmusic album Review : Prompted by Little Richards comeback on Reprise Records, Specialty, his label during his hitmaking days in the late 50s, went through its vaults and came up with this album of material consisting of songs that had never been released, had only been released as singles, or contained overdubs added to the original tapes. Little Richard had returned to the label briefly in the mid-60s, and those sessions provided the title track and the 1964 chart single "Bama-Lama Bama-Loo." This was an album aimed mainly at collectors, but much of the material was worthy.

Friends From the Beginning : Allmusic album Review : There are only two instances of Jimi Hendrix performing with Little Richard known to exist on tape. Theres the Vee Jay single "I Dont What You Got, .Pts. 1 & 2" produced by Bumps Blackwell, and a live performance at Revere Beach, MA, of Little Richard in concert with Jimi Hendrix on guitar, recorded by the legendary mastering engineer and disc jockey "Little" Walter DeVenne. According to very reputable sources, this Alfa release, Friends from the Beginning, is totally bogus. Theres Aki Tomitas illustrations of Hendrix and Penniman on the front and back cover, there are ridiculous liner notes that are almost as absurd as the ones producer Johnny Brantley etched on the back of Jimi Hendrix and Lonnie Youngblood: Two Great Experiences Together (an album reportedly containing a couple of actual songs with Hendrix and tracks that feature a Hendrix sound-alike to fill out the disc), and theres the music. The album claims to be produced by Bumps Blackwell and Little Richard, but most likely is not. The version of "Tutti Frutti" which ends side one sounds like a simple guitar lesson being played over a quick studio session with vintage 60s ambience. Where a true "bootleg" album contains rare performances that fans treasure and a "counterfeit" is usually an identical reproduction of a legit album by unscrupulous individuals, fraudulent recordings like Friends from the Beginning serve no purpose but to confuse the public and harm the reputations of the artists whose names appear on these travesties. It is a deception. There is no Jimi Hendrix on this record. This album says it is a 1972 release, and it actually credits most of the songwriting to Little Richard and Jimi Hendrix. This is of value to fans only as a bizarre artifact from an industry where the artist and the public are both being cheated. Author John McDermott from the official Experience Hendrix company has written Hendrix: Setting the Record Straight on Warner Books to help clear situations like this up. Such a book is very necessary for an artist whose catalog is rife with items like Friends from the Beginning; it is suggested you spend your money on the book rather than this pathetic album.

The Second Coming : Allmusic album Review : In the 1970s, Little Richard could still bring a house down on-stage; his riveting performances were a staple on the Richard Nader touring packages. Reprise Records should be commended for allowing Richard Penniman the opportunity to express his artistry through new music crafted with some old friends, including decent liner notes about what is truly an historic recording session. On The Second Coming, the man who "supervised all of the original legendary Little Richard hits, R.A. Bumps Blackwell, reunites many of the musicians used on the first recordings." Its a funkier, thick sound with less of the rock & roll fury of the earlier masters, with a rearrangement of "The Saints" thats chock-full of saxes and groove. The liners claim that they used recording techniques from the 50s for songs and sounds of the 1970s, and the result is very slick for 1972. "The Saints" would have been great for urban radio of that time period, and Bill Hemmons "Nuki Suki" could really have brightened up Top 40 radio with its innovation and suave musical movements. Jim Horn brings his baritone sax to the party alongside Hemmons and Lee Allens tenor sax, and the album is rich with Blackwells refined presentation. Its truly a team effort between Blackwell and Richard Penniman; they co-write five of the nine compositions, with both men credited as "producing and arranging" the affair on the label (the album cover credits only Blackwell for production and arrangements). Theres not a bad track here, though there also isnt any one number which stands out as a bona fide hit. Any of these titles wouldve made you crank the car AM up a notch or two, the craftsmanship coming through loud and clear. Little Richards screams in "Rockin Rockin Boogie" provide subtle thunder, the rock & roll abandon of his early sides replaced by a contained professional noise. But theres something eminently charming about it all, with Penniman advising to "keep on seeking and searching" in his wonderfully preachy "Prophet of Peace." The guitars wail underneath the bubbling rhythm; The Second Coming is a lot more serious than the very loud Dave Willardson cover photo of the singer. "Thomasine" dips back into the 50s and adds some fun to these precise recordings. All in all, a really special set of songs and performances that are ripe for rediscovery.

God's Beautiful City : Allmusic album Review : After spending a decade, from the mid-60s to the mid-70s, trying to revive his career as a secular pop star, Little Richard returned to gospel music in the late 70s, beginning with this album. "Although his music has influenced artists in the music business who today are regarded as the greatest, Little Richard now proclaims that rock and roll serves no good purpose," declare the liner notes, which should serve notice to fans about what they are likely (or not likely) to find on this record. What they will find is Little Richard, on the four songs of side one, singing piano-based gospel songs like "It Is No Secret (What God Can Do)" and, on side two, presenting his testimony: "I gave up rock n roll for the Rock of Ages," he declares. (Originally released as World 1001 in 1979, Gods Beautiful City was reissued as Black Label/MCA 9607 in 1982.)

My Soul," "Miss Ann," "Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey," and "Bama Lama Bama Loo" that were bigger hits on the R&B charts than the pop charts. All of the singles are presented in chronological order, and the disc simply rips it up from beginning to end. Its a definitive collection.

Lifetime Friend : Allmusic album Review : Little Richard appeared in the film Down and Out in Beverly Hills in 1986 and sang the movies theme song, "Great Gosh AMighty," which became a chart hit and led Warner Bros. Records to sign him for another comeback attempt. Lifetime Friend -- which leads off with "Great Gosh AMighty" -- an uptempo raver in the style of his 1950s hits, is Little Richards first newly recorded album not consisting of re-recorded oldies or exclusively devoted to religious material since his tenure at Reprise Records, 1970-1971. It is a reasonable attempt to update his style while retaining his traditional rock & roll approach and is one of the few Little Richard recordings that mixes his previously contradictory attractions to rock and to inspirational music: Rather than preaching against rock, he uses rock to preach.

The Collection : Allmusic album Review : Little Richards flamboyant style and over-the-top stage antics prefigured later figures like Elton John, and if Richard used the piano as much as a prop as he used it as an instrument, the fact remains that he had a big hand in casting the template for rock & roll piano. His songwriting, too, a delightful mix of lust and nonsense, helped shape rocks self-image as music of fun and rebellious abandon. Merging gospel passion with hard-charging New Orleans R&B; piano riffs, singing like a manic angel, and blessed with the streetwise poetry of a junkyard Shakespeare in his songwriting, Little Richard had a run of high-charged hits in 1956 and 1957 that is nothing short of astounding, including the classics "Tutti Frutti," "Long Tall Sally," "Lucille," "Good Golly Miss Molly," "Jenny, Jenny," a clattering, rocking litany by this one of a kind artist. He may have ended up as somewhat of a parody of himself, but these tracks are the real deal, and the original versions of the above songs are all here (Little Richard re-recorded much of this material later in his career -- in only slightly diminished versions). Rock & roll may have gotten louder and bigger as time went on, but it never sounded more alive or electric (in the truest sense of the word) than it did with Little Richard at his mid-50s peak.

The Specialty Sessions : Allmusic album Review : Dig it: a collection of all 73 songs that Little Richard cut for Specialty Records from 1955 through 1959, including early working versions of hits including "Long Tall Sally" and "Slippin and Slidin," may seem like overkill to the casual listener, but if youre thinking of buying this three-CD box, chances are youre not a casual listener. And if youre not thinking about it, then you should be. This set covers only four years in Little Richards career, but manages to sum up virtually everything you need to know about him (his earlier sides, available on Bear Family, are an interesting appendix, but of his later stuff, only the early- and mid-60s material, with Jimi Hendrix on guitar, holds any significance, mostly as a curiosity). Not only does the music make you want to get up and dance, but the notes -- spread out in a lavishly illustrated booklet and the individual jewel boxes -- tell the whole story of Specialty Records and the people behind it, including Art Rupe, Bumps Blackwell, Dave Bartholomew, and, of course, Richard Penniman himself. The session information alone could keep owners busy for a week. The sound is nothing less than breathtaking, loud and raunchy but razor-sharp, and the price of this set -- about $42 retail -- makes it competitive with other Little Richard single-disc sets as well as more attractive than the price of boxes devoted to Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry. The only complaint -- why couldnt the producers list the songs on the individual jewel boxes?

The Formative Years 1951-53 : Allmusic album Review : Several years before permanently altering cultural history with an incendiary new kind of dance music issued on 78 rpm platters that bore the black and yellow Specialty logo, Little Richard made his first recordings for the Victor and Peacock labels. In 1989, Bear Family released The Formative Years 1951-53, containing 16 of these historic performances appended with six alternate takes. By dishing out swinging rhythm & blues infused with a New Orleans kick, Little Richard was laying the ground for a much rowdier, edgier manifestation that would eventually envelop him and the entire nation in a defiant and recklessly joyous catharsis called rock & roll. Without these fine R&B; records, wouldnt none of that come together the way that it did. If you take this collection, combine it with the Specialty recordings and use selections from the Vee Jay catalog for a chaser, youll be in a good position to draw your own conclusions regarding what this amazing individual recorded later in life.

Shake It All About : Allmusic album Review : In 1991, Little Richards rendition of "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" was the highlight of Disneys For Our Children compilation, leading to this full-length collection, which is his first newly-recorded album in six years and his first childrens album ever. Taking on 12 childrens songs (including his own "Keep a Knockin," appropriately peppered with knock-knock jokes), Little Richard re-arranges them to sound like the kind of 50s rock & roll for which hes famous. So, for example, "Old MacDonald" bears a certain resemblance to "Boney Maronie." Its all good fun, though, since its also all uptempo, but you may not want to play it all the way through for small children; theyre apt to get overexcited.
