Hank Williams | ||
Allmusic Biography : Hank Williams is the father of contemporary country music. He was a superstar by the age of 25; he was dead at the age of 29. In those four short years, he established the rules for all the country performers who followed him and, in the process, much of popular music. Hank wrote a body of songs that became popular classics, and his direct, emotional lyrics and vocals became the standard for most popular performers. He lived a life as troubled and reckless as that depicted in his songs. Hiram King Williams was born in Mount Olive, AL, on September 17, 1923. When he was eight years old, he was given a guitar by his mother. His musical education was provided by a local blues street singer, Rufus Payne, who was called Tee Tot. From Tee Tot, Williams learned how to play the guitar and sing the blues, which would come to provide a strong undercurrent in his songwriting. Williams began performing around the Georgiana and Greenville areas of Alabama in his early teens. His mother moved the family to Montgomery, AL, in 1937, where she opened a boarding house. In Montgomery, he formed a band called the Drifting Cowboys and landed a regular spot on a local radio station, WSFA, in 1941. During his shows, Williams would sing songs from his idol, Roy Acuff, as well as several other country hits of the day. WSFA dubbed him "the Singing Kid" and Williams stayed with the station for the rest of the decade. Williams met Audrey Mae Sheppard, a farm girl from Banks, AL, in 1943 while he was playing a medicine show. The following year, the couple married and moved into Lillys boarding house. Audrey became Williams manager just before the marriage. By 1946, he was a local celebrity, but he was unable to make much headway nationally. That year, Hank and Audrey visited Nashville with the intent of meeting songwriter/music publisher Fred Rose, one of the heads of Acuff-Rose Publishing. Rose liked Williams songs and asked him to record two sessions for Sterling Records, which resulted in two singles. Both of the singles -- "Never Again" in December 1946 and "Honky Tonkin" in February 1947 -- were successful and Williams signed a contract with MGM Records early in 1947. Rose became the singers manager and record producer. "Move It on Over," released later in 1947, became Hanks first single for MGM. It was an immediate hit, climbing into the country Top Five. By the summer of 1948, he had joined The Louisiana Hayride, appearing both on its tours and radio programs. "Honky Tonkin" was released in 1948, followed by "Im a Long Gone Daddy." While neither song was as successful as "Move It on Over," they were popular, with the latter peaking in the Top Ten. Early in 1949, he recorded "Lovesick Blues," a Tin Pan Alley song initially recorded by Emmett Miller and made popular by Rex Griffin. The single became a huge hit upon its release in the spring of 1949, staying at number one for 16 weeks and crossing over into the pop Top 25. Williams sang the song at the Grand Ole Opry, where he performed an unprecedented six encores. He had become a star. Hank and Audrey Williams had their first child, Randall Hank, in the spring of 1949. Also in the spring, Hank assembled the most famous edition of the Drifting Cowboys, featuring guitarist Bob McNett, bassist Hillous Butrum, fiddler Jerry Rivers, and steel guitarist Don Helms. Soon, he and the band were earning $1,000 per concert while selling out shows across the country. Williams had no fewer than seven hits in 1949 after the success of "Lovesick Blues," including the Top Five smashes "Wedding Bells," "Mind Your Own Business," "Youre Gonna Change (Or Im Gonna Leave)," and "My Buckets Got a Hole in It." A string of additional singles followed in 1950, including the number one hits "Long Gone Lonesome Blues," "Why Dont You Love Me," and "Moanin the Blues," as well as the Top Ten hits "I Just Dont Like This Kind of Livin," "My Son Calls Another Man Daddy," "Theyll Never Take Her Love From Me," "Why Should We Try," and "Nobodys Lonesome for Me." That same year, Williams began recording a series of spiritual records under the name Luke the Drifter. Williams continued to rack up hits in 1951, beginning with the Top Ten hit "Dear John" and its number one flip side, "Cold, Cold Heart." That same year, pop vocalist Tony Bennett recorded his own version of "Cold, Cold Heart" to popular acclaim, leading to a stream of covers from such mainstream artists as Jo Stafford, Guy Mitchell, Frankie Laine, Teresa Brewer, and several others. Williams had also begun to experience the fruits of crossover success, appearing on the Perry Como television show and joining a package tour that also featured Bob Hope, Jack Benny, and Minny Pearl. In addition to "Dear John" and "Cold, Cold Heart," Williams had several other hits in 1951, including the number one song "Hey, Good Lookin" and "Howlin at the Moon," "I Cant Help It (If Im Still in Love with You)," "Crazy Heart," "Lonesome Whistle," and "Baby, Were Really in Love," which all charted in the Top Ten. Though his professional career was soaring, Hanks personal life was beginning to spin out of control. He had suffered a mild drinking problem before becoming a star, but it had been more or less controlled during his first few years of fame. However, as he began to earn large amounts of money and spend long times away from home, he began to drink frequently. Furthermore, Hanks marriage to Audrey was deteriorating. Not only were they fighting, resulting in occasional separations, but Audrey was trying to create her own recording career without any success. In the fall of 1951, Hank was on a hunting trip on his Tennessee farm when he tripped and fell, re-activating a dormant back injury. Williams began taking morphine and other painkillers for his back and quickly became addicted. In January of 1952, Hank and Audrey separated for a final time and he headed back to Montgomery to live with his mother. The move had little effect on his music career, however, with "Honky Tonk Blues" peaking at number two during the spring. In fact, he released five additional singles in 1952 -- "Half as Much," "Jambalaya," "Settin the Woods on Fire," "You Win Again," and "Ill Never Get Out of This World Alive" -- all of which charted in the Top Ten. In spite of such success, Hank turned completely reckless in 1952, spending nearly all of his waking hours drunk and taking drugs. He also frequently destroyed property and played with guns. Williams left his mother in early spring, moving in with Ray Price in Nashville. In May, Audrey and Hank were officially divorced. She was awarded the house and their child, as well as half of his future royalties. Williams continued to play a large number of concerts, but he was always drunk during the show, and he sometimes missed the gig altogether. In August, the Grand Ole Opry fired Williams for that very reason, explaining that he could return once he was sober. Instead of heeding the Oprys warning, the singer just sank deeper into his self-destructive behavior. Soon, his friends were leaving him, as the Drifting Cowboys began working with Price and Fred Rose no longer supported him. Williams was still playing The Louisiana Hayride, but he was performing with local pickup bands and began earning reduced wages. That fall, he met Billie Jean Jones Eshlimar, the 19-year-old daughter of a Louisiana policeman. By October, they were married. Hank also signed an agreement to support the baby -- who had yet to be delivered -- of one of his other girlfriends, Bobbie Jett, in October. By the end of the year, Williams was having heart problems and Toby Marshall, a con man doctor, was giving him various prescription drugs to help soothe the pain. Hank was scheduled to play a concert in Canton, OH, on January 1, 1953. He was scheduled to fly out of Knoxville, TN, on New Years Eve, but the weather was so bad that he had to hire a chauffeur to drive him to Ohio in his new Cadillac. Before they left for Ohio, Williams was injected with two shots of vitamin B-12 and morphine by a doctor. Williams got into the backseat of the Cadillac (allegedly with a bottle of whiskey), and the teenage chauffeur headed out for Canton. When the driver was stopped for speeding, the policeman noticed that Hank looked like a dead man. Williams was taken to a West Virginia hospital and he was officially declared dead at 7:00 a.m. on January 1, 1953. He had died in the back of the Cadillac, on his way to a concert. Ironically, the last single released in his lifetime was "Ill Never Get Out of This World Alive." Hank was buried in Montgomery, AL, three days later. His funeral drew a record crowd, larger than any crowd since Jefferson Davis was inaugurated as the President of the Confederacy in 1861. Dozens of country music stars attended, as did Audrey Williams, Billie Jean Jones, and Bobbie Jett, who happened to give birth to a daughter three days later. "Ill Never Get Out of This World Alive" reached number one immediately after his death, and it was followed by a number of hit records throughout 1953, including the number ones "Your Cheatin Heart," "Kaw-Liga," and "Take These Chains From My Heart." After his death, MGM wanted to keep issuing Williams records, so they took some of his original demos and overdubbed bands onto the original recording. The first of these, "Weary Blues from Waitin," was a hit, but the others werent quite as successful. In 1961, Hank was one of the first inductees to the Country Music Hall of Fame. Throughout the 60s, Williams records were released in overdubbed versions featuring heavy strings, as well as reprocessed stereo. For years, these bastardized versions were the only records in print, and only in the 80s, when his music was released on compact disc, was his catalog restored to its original form. Even during those years when only overdubbed versions of his hits existed, Williams impact never diminished. His songs have become classics, his recordings have stood the test of time, and his life story is legendary. Its easy to see why Hank Williams is considered by many as the defining figure of country music.

Beyond the Sunset : Allmusic album Review : This is a classic session with Hank Williams assuming the role of Luke the Drifter. These stunning narratives will surely conjure up images of campfires and Sundays at the chapel. The selections are backed by organ, steel guitar, or his own acoustic guitar strumming, which has always been overlooked. Old favorites such as "Men with Broken Hearts," "Ive Been Down That Road Before," and "Beyond the Sunset" are all treated with special care, but "The Funeral" is the sessions most stirring moment. It is hard to believe that Hank Williams was still in his twenties (he died when he was 29) when this music was recorded. He is an American treasure and this is one of his most enduring recordings. Essential.

40 Greatest Hits : Allmusic album Review : Hank Williams body of work is so large and has been repackaged so many times in so many forms that the notion of creating a definitive compilation almost seems like an impossible goal. However, as a one-stop shopping place for Hanks basic repertoire, 40 Greatest Hits is as good as it gets. While it doesnt include everything, practically every memorable hit is here, and thankfully every cut appears in its original form (that means in mono, with no string overdubs or artificial duets with his family members). The track sequence subtly reflects the arc of Williams short but vitally important career, and theres enough good music and great songs here to make a fan of anyone with even a passing interest in American music. If you care about country music, you need some Hank Williams in your collection, and there isnt a better introduction to his rich body of work on the market than 40 Greatest Hits; begin here, then start exploring.

The Original Singles Collection... Plus : Allmusic album Review : The title of The Original Singles Collection ... Plus is slightly misleading. Although PolyGram marketed the three-disc, 83-song set as a complete collection, it doesnt feature all of the singles Hank Williams released during his lifetime. Several singles Williams released under the pseudonym "Luke the Drifter" as well all of the duets he cut with Audrey Williams arent present. Despite these handful of songs, everything else is included in their original, undubbed versions and are presented in the best sound possible. For a fan that wants all the essential songs without springing for the eight disc series of complete recordings, The Original Singles collection is invaluable.

Lonesome Blues : Allmusic album Review : The music on Lonesome Blues is certainly first-rate, but the budget packaging leaves a lot to be desired. Featuring a skimpy track selection and liner notes, the disc is only useful for the extremely budget-conscious. Those looking for an introduction to Williamss work should stick with 40 Greatest Hits.

Cheating Hearts : Allmusic album Review : Since Hank Williams was propelled to such legendary status over such a short career, it should be expected that his marketability would be seized upon by a fair number of labels of varying quality that intend to make some quick money off his name. Cheating Hearts falls somewhere in the middle of this quality list, providing many of Williams memorable songs in good fidelity, but falls rather flatly below the much more comprehensive 40 Greatest Hits, which has been the benchmark of Hank Williams collections since 1978. Theres nothing particularly bad about the collection, but far better deals do exist.

24 Greatest Hits Vol. 2 : Allmusic album Review : When compared with 40 Greatest Hits (which came out the following year), this record is light on both tracks and liner notes. Adding insult to injury, these tracks are also offered in simulated stereo. Okay, but there are better packages.

American Legends: Best of the Early Years : Allmusic album Review : As one might easily guess from looking at their covers, Laserlight Records AMERICAN LEGENDS discs feature those artists honored by the U.S. Postal Service. Volume 18 in the series pays tribute to Hank Williams Sr., arguably country musics greatest songwriter and certainly the biggest country star of his era. Between 1947 and 1953--the year of his untimely death--Williams placed 35 songs in the country Top 10, many of which he wrote himself. Hank Williams appears on only four of the thirteen recordings included on AMERICAN LEGENDS. The other nine tracks are songs written by and popularized by Williams but performed here by other artists. West Coast honky-tonk legend Rose Maddox sings three Williams songs, and Molly ODay gives three others an Appalachian flavor. Bluegrass legends the Osborne Brothers add "My Heart Would Know" and "My Sweet Love Aint Around." While theres nothing wrong with these recordings per se, they dont meet the high standard set by Williams original recordings. Furthermore, several of these songs are definitely second-tier songwriting efforts. Accordingly, AMERICAN LEGENDS is a nice, though not exemplary, set. Those seeking Williams original classic recordings should consider either 20 GREATEST HITS or 40 GREATEST HITS.

20 of Hank Williams' Greatest Hits : Allmusic album Review : This set, coming along as it did fairly early in the CD era, provides a very solid look at the genius of Hank Williams and is a fine place to start for anyone looking for an introduction. The price is right, sound is OK, and it has pretty much all of the most important material, and some curiosities as well. Arguably there are omissions, but that would be true in any singe CD overview. In this case, Williams first single, "Six More Miles to the Graveyard," would have been a far better choice than, say, "My Heart Would Know." This one has the poetry, the easy Southern swing, proto-rockabilly, and hillbilly boogie ("Move It One Over" is one such example), and the magic of the voice itself for a fine price. This is a great purchase.

The Complete Hank Williams : Allmusic album Review : Between 1986 and 1987, Mercury launched its first effort to chronicle Hank Williams complete recorded works, releasing a series of eight double albums/single CDs which were later collected as a box set. Both the individual compilations and the box set were pulled from the market in the 90s, clearing the way for The Complete Hank Williams, a ten-disc box set which purported to contain all of Williams recordings. Mercury, however, played it a little loose with their terms, deciding that "complete" covers the studio recordings, demos, and selected live performances, leaving overdubbed tracks and many live cuts (including much of The Health and Happiness Shows, which was released as a separate collection) in the vaults. This is bound to frustrate some collectors, but it makes for a better listen, actually. Instead of piling all the recordings into an impenetrable chronological trawl through Williams recording life, the compilers logically devoted specific discs to the studio sessions, live cuts, and demos. In particular, the studio discs are quite compelling, but for hardcore fans, the previously unheard live performances (including several songs that Williams only performed in concert) are the real treasures. Then again, only hardcore fans will invest in such a lavish, extensive box set as The Complete Hank Williams, and theres little question that theyll be quite pleased with it.

The Legendary Hank Williams : Allmusic album Review : When British budget reissue label Prism Leisure came to assemble this Hank Williams compilation in 1999, the label was restricted to using only Williams earliest recordings. European copyright law limits ownership of recordings to 50 years, after which they enter the public domain. Williams began recording in 1946 and died at the start of 1953, so, as of 1999, only his work from 1946-1948 was available to anyone who wanted to reissue it for free. Thus, Prism was able to include the hits "Move It on Over," "Honky Tonkin," "Im a Long Gone Daddy," "Mansion on the Hill," "Lovesick Blues," and "Never Again (Will I Knock on Your Door)," but the other 16 tracks on the disc were non-hits from early in Williams career. Several of these songs were excellent, of course, particularly "I Saw the Light," which became a country/gospel standard. But the collection did not reflect the breadth of Williams recording career, and with Prisms usual cheap packaging and skimpy, generic liner notes, this album was no competition to the more legitimate compilations of Williams on the market.

Famous Country Music Makers : Allmusic album Review : The Hank Williams entry into Castle Pulses Famous Country Music Makers is as solid an introductory "greatest-hits" collection from the honky tonk legend as one could want, boasting enough classics like "Honky Tonkin," "Lovesick Blues," "Hey, Good Lookin," "Your Cheatin Heart," "Im So Lonesome I Could Cry," and "Lost Highway" to warrant repeated listens. However, fans looking for the usual assortment can find these songs on numerous other compilations, making Mercurys 40 Greatest Hits, or better yet, the labels insane, ten-disc Complete Hank Williams a little more attractive.

Live at the Grand Ole Opry : Allmusic album Review : This two-disc set brings together every extant performance from Hank Williams brief hookup with the Opry. The first disc collects 21 performances, both musical and in the company of Opry comedy regulars Minnie Pearl and Rod Brasfield. To give a sense of how his presence worked in the format of the show, the second disc is a complete Opry broadcast from 1950 with Williams as part of the cast that also features Red Foley, Wally Fowler and the Oak Ridge Quartet (forerunners of todays Oak Ridge Boys), Minnie Pearl, Claude Sharpe and the Old Hickory Singers, and blackface comedians Jamup and Honey. Whether hes singing one of his famous hits or an old gospel favorite, or playing straight man to Brasfield or Pearl, its obvious that here was a performer with personality aplenty, and it comes across on these old acetates with amazing impact.

The Garden Spot Programs, 1950 : Allmusic album Review : Playing country music was not a glamorous way to make a living in the 40s and 50s, when even the biggest and most celebrated artists in the field were barnstorming at honky tonks and often taking whatever gigs they could get. In 1950, Hank Williams had already scored a handful of country hits and was riding the wave of another with "Lovesick Blues," which would become the success that launched him into major stardom. But when he was offered a fast-money job hosting a radio show sponsored by Garden Spot, a mail-order plant and garden supply company, he wasnt above taking the work. The short-lived Garden Spot series found Williams sitting in with a pickup band at a studio in Nashville, playing hits and C&W; favorites in between pitches for Garden Spot and their products, and the 15-minute shows were shipped to radio stations around the country in the form of transcription discs. For years, it was believed that the Garden Spot transcriptions had been lost for good, but four discs were discovered in the library of a radio station in Creston, Iowa, and for the first time theyve been given commercial release by Omnivore Recordings on The Garden Spot Programs, 1950. These recordings are not as revelatory as the Mothers Best Flour shows, another series of radio broadcasts that finally saw commercial release in 2008; Williams is not performing with his group the Drifting Cowboys, and while the sidemen here are more than competent, they dont mesh with him as well as his road band, and each episode includes a fiddle instrumental that doesnt make much room for Williams or his songs, not to mention the Garden Spot jingle. But despite the off the cuff nature of the recordings and the slightly padded pacing, Williams sounds strong and inspired here; along with several of his own classics, Williams covers a few country and gospel favorites, and his vocals are never less than committed whether hes singing "Bachelor Til I Die," "Farther Along," or "Oh! Susanna," and the cheers from the small studio audience never sound forced. (The audio is also surprisingly good for music rescued from discs over 60 years old.) When the Mothers Best shows finally surfaced, the effect was as if a whole new Hank Williams repertoire had been discovered; in comparison, The Garden Spot Programs, 1950 are like a snapshot, catching a great artist in an unexpected time and place. But this music also testifies to Williams casual brilliance as a performer and as a songwriter, and for fans this is a small but very welcome addition to the mans recorded legacy. |
