Allmusic Biography : Few performers in country music have proved as influential and iconic as Loretta Lynn. At a time when women usually took a back seat to men in Nashville, Lynn was a voice of strength, independence, and sometimes defiance, writing and singing songs that spoke to the concerns of working-class women with unapologetic honesty. She could sing of her hardscrabble childhood ("Coal Miners Daughter"), deal with the realities of relationships ("Fist City," "You Aint Woman Enough"), deliver proto-feminist anthems ("The Pill"), and explore mature romance (her series of duets with Conway Twitty) and sound perfectly authentic at every turn. Lynns voice, strong but naturalistic and matched to tough, lively honky tonk arrangements, reinforced the home truths of her songs, and her success blazed trails for other female country artists. As a member of the Grand Ol Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame, shes been honored by the country music establishment while still doing things her own way. She was a frequent presence on the country charts from 1960 to 1981, and even as tastes changed and her record sales faded, she continued to be a potent live attraction and a major influence on other artists. And at the age of 72, Lynn was discovered by a new generation of music fans when alternative rock star Jack White, a longtime fan, produced her 2004 album, Van Lear Rose. As told by her song (and movie and book), Loretta Lynn is a Coal Miners Daughter, born in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky in 1932. As a child, she sang in church and at a variety of local concerts. In January 1949, she married Oliver "Mooney" Lynn. She was 13 years old at the time. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Custer, Washington, where they raised four children. After a decade of motherhood, Lynn began performing her own songs in local clubs, backed by a band led by her brother, Jay Lee Webb. In 1960, she signed a contract with Zero Records, which released her debut single, "Im a Honky Tonk Girl." The honky tonk ballad became a hit thanks to the insistent, independent promotion of Lynn and her husband. The pair would drive from one radio station to the next, getting the DJs to play her single, and sent out thousands of copies to stations. All of the effort paid off -- the single reached number 14 on the charts and attracted the attention of the Wilburn Brothers. The Wilburns hired Lynn to tour with them in 1960 and advised her to relocate to Nashville. She followed their advice and moved to the city in late 1960. After she arrived, she signed with Decca Records, and would work with Owen Bradley, who had produced Patsy Cline, one of Lynns favorite artists. Lynn released her first Decca single, "Success," in 1962 and it went straight to number six, beginning a string of Top Ten singles that would run to the end of the decade and throughout the next. She was a hard honky tonk singer for the first half of the 60s, and rarely strayed from the genre. Although she still worked within the confines of honky tonk in the latter half of the decade, her sound became more personal, varied, and ambitious, particularly lyrically. Beginning with 1966s number two hit "You Aint Woman Enough," Lynn began writing songs that had a feminist viewpoint, which was unheard of in country music. Her lyrical stance became more autobiographical and realistic as time wore on, highlighted by such hits as "Dont Come Home a Drinkin (With Lovin on Your Mind)" (1966), "Your Squaw Is on the Warpath" (1968), "Woman of the World (Leave My World Alone)" (1969), and a tune about birth control called "The Pill" (1974). Between 1966 and 1970, Lynn racked up 13 Top Ten hits, including four number one hits -- "Dont Come Home a Drinkin," "Fist City" (1968), "Woman of the World," and the autobiographical "Coal Miners Daughter" (1970). In 1971, she began a professional partnership with Conway Twitty. As a duo, Lynn and Twitty had five consecutive number one hits between 1971 and 1975: "After the Fire Is Gone" (1971), "Lead Me On" (1971), "Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man" (1973), "As Soon as I Hang Up the Phone" (1974), and "Feelins" (1974). The hit streak kick-started what would become one of the most successful duos in country history. For four consecutive years (1972-1975), Lynn and Twitty were named Vocal Duo of the Year by the Country Music Association. In addition to their five number one singles, they had seven other Top Ten hits between 1976 and 1981. Lynn published her autobiography, Coal Miners Daughter, in 1976. In 1980, the book was adapted for the screen, with Sissy Spacek as Loretta. It was one of the most critically acclaimed and successful films of the year, and Spacek won the Academy Award for her performance. All of the attention surrounding the movie made Lynn a household name within the American mainstream. Although she continued to be a popular concert attraction throughout the 80s, she wasnt able to continue her domination of the country charts. "I Lie," her last Top Ten single, arrived in early 1982, while her last Top 40 single, "Heart Dont Do This to Me," was in 1985. In light of her declining record sales, Lynn backed away from recording frequently during the late 80s and 90s, concentrating on performing instead. In 1993, she recorded the Honky Tonk Angels album with Tammy Wynette and Dolly Parton. Still Country was released in mid-2000. In 2004, Lynn teamed up with White Stripes guitarist Jack White and released Van Lear Rose, which was met with both surprise and awe. The album quickly became popular and Lynn embarked on a tour to support it. Van Lear Rose won two Grammy Awards, including Best Country Album, in 2005. In 2007, Lynn started recording again, with her daughter Patsy Lynn Russell and John Carter Cash acting as producers. Over the next eight years, she recorded hundreds of songs, and these recordings were whittled down to Full Circle, a full-length album released in March of 2016. The album debuted at four on Billboards Country Albums chart and 19 on the Top 200 chart. The following October, Lynn released the seasonal White Christmas Blue, which was recorded at the same sessions as Full Circle. 2018s Wouldnt It Be Great was a low-key set designed to showcase Lynns songwriting, featuring new tunes as well as classics from her songbook. The sessions were produced by Patsy Lynn Russell (Lorettas daughter) and John Carter Cash.

Hymns : Allmusic album Review : Loretta Lynns fourth album -- fifth if you count her duet record with Ernest Tubb from earlier in 1965 -- is a collection of Christian songs but, despite the title, the record is actually about evenly divided between traditional church music and what would eventually come to be called contemporary Christian music. The rollicking opening track, "Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven (But Nobody Wants to Die)," biblical verse or no, sounds more like a classic Sun Records rockabilly single, complete with slapback bass and Scotty Moore-style guitar, than anything one would be likely to hear on a Sunday morning. That song is a Lynn original, as is the closing "Where I Learned How to Pray," a sentimental weeper in the classic style. In between, Lynn essays traditional hymns and newer classics of the style like the Rev. Thomas A. Dorseys immortal "Therell Be Peace in the Valley for Me," the arrangement of which strongly recalls Elvis hit version. A relative rarity among Lynns albums, this disc was reissued by King Records in 1998.

You Ain’t Woman Enough : Allmusic album Review : Although it boggles the mind a bit to think this was recorded in the same year (1967) that the Beatles unleashed Sgt. Peppers, this is actually one of Lynns strongest and most characteristic early efforts. The title song, one of Lynns many watch-where-you-park-it-sister anthems, has of course become a classic. There are also some great cry-in-your-beer weepies ("The Darkest Day"), tales of domestic drudgery ("Tippy Toeing"), and a surprisingly convincing cover of Nancy Sinatras "These Boots Are Made for Walkin."

Country Christmas : Allmusic album Review : MCA Nashvilles discount-priced 20th Century Masters - The Christmas Collection: The Best of Loretta Lynn is nothing more or less than a straight reissue of Lynns 1966 holiday album Country Christmas. There are those who would like to set every Christmas album ever recorded ablaze over a Yuletide fireplace, but lets hope these cheerless arsonists overlook this already well-roasted chestnut of a record. If anyone has the personality to make a good Christmas record, it would be Loretta Lynn. But there are surprise goodies in her gift bag, as she even manages to come up with three great original numbers based on the holiday, the best of the batch being "To Heck with Ole Santa Claus." Her playful side helps her extract nice feelings from too-familiar numbers such as "Silver Bells" and "Frosty the Snowman." And Lynn is such a great vocalist that shes able to give both Elvis Presley and Bing Crosby a run for the mistletoe as she takes Christmas from shades of blue to white and back again. Some good country session pickers hold things together whenever she stops for a holiday smooch.

Don’t Come Home a Drinkin’ (with Lovin’ on Your Mind) : Allmusic album Review : The title track was one of those defining songs for Loretta Lynn, not only one of the best but one of the most likeable country & western artists. She bats one home run after another in these vocals, singing her brains out and coming across as totally convincing in each role she takes on. The cynical "I Got Caught" is one of her finer originals, while she also has the knack of picking covers that suit her perfectly, such as "The Shoe Goes on the Other Foot Tonight" by the underrated Buddy Mize. No country fan will mind that she covers a number by her old sidekick, Ernest Tubb. Then theres the pickers who came along for the ride, totally tearing it up. The series of lead guitar/pedal steel interchanges that run through this album are certainly more attractive than the Nashville freeway system, and definitely contributed more to 20th century civilization. Lynn would later record the song "Youre Lookin at Country," and that pretty much sums up the view of this mighty lady. This here is stone-cold country, and it doesnt get much better.

Singin’ With Feelin’ : Allmusic album Review : She was into the double digits with albums on Decca by the time this was released, and although recording them involved a formula and must have settled into a kind of science, what a great scientist Loretta Lynn is. "Vocal with instrumental accompaniment" is the understated totality of the liner notes. Permanent pedal steel partner Hal Rugg, joined at the hip to Lynn, is his brilliant self. He is sometimes driven into near frenzy by his trading partner on electric guitar. Drums are especially crisp and snappy on the numbers that shuffle or swing. Lynn also has her fingers in the pop pie, making "Secret Love," at that time a hit for Doris Day, sound just like it was a Loretta Lynn song. Country music is of course known for tragedy and there is plenty of that here to savor. But the high point of the album is, surprisingly, a cute bit of fluff entitled "Its Such a Pretty World Today." Lynn puts literally oodles of good feeling into the lyrics by Dale Noe, resulting in a song that could probably brighten up the worst of days.

Who Says God Is Dead! : Allmusic album Review : Considering the amount of conviction Loretta Lynn sings with here, no one has probably ever debated the singer about this album title. And buckets full of retro-kitsch aside, this late-60s follow-up to Lynns gospel debut, Hymns, nicely packs it in with dreams of the apocalypse, testaments of the heaven-bound, and several classic gospel songs. In addition to romping through "Harp With Golden Strings" and "Hes Got the Whole World in His Hands," Lynn really sinks her sanctified teeth into waltz-time ballads like "In the Garden" and "Ten Thousand Angels." Adding to these venerable selections, Lynn contributes a few of her own testimonies on the judgment-day narrative "Standing Room Only" and the title track. And for that ethereal touch, the Jordanaires bless the proceedings with their airily dulcet harmonies. Whether laughing or crying, partying or praying, this album should fit the bill if you need a break from Nashvilles slew of cheatin songs and other tragic tales of co-dependency.

Your Squaw Is on the Warpath : Allmusic album Review : Boasting one of the classic politically incorrect album covers -- which depicts Loretta as a sexy, tomahawk wielding Native American -- Your Squaw is on the Warpath takes its title from the equally inappropriate track that begins the album. And while it may seem that this albums real value comes from its now kitchy artifact status, the rest of the album stands as a good collection, showcasing Lynns talents as singer and interpreter of others songs.

Woman of the World / To Make a Man : Allmusic album Review : A couple of misfire tracks keep this from being among the best of this country singing queens many fine albums for this label. Normally a pretty reliable songwriter, she comes up with a pretty embarrassing dud in "To Make a Man Feel Like a Man," but it must have been the season for this kind of thing as she also does a cover version of "Stand By Your Man," which is a much better song and also in this case provides the interesting contrast of getting to hear one country song queen doing her interpretation of one of her rivals biggest hits. Elsewhere, Lynn has the taste to do a moving Merle Haggard cover, and her original "Big Sister, Little Sister" is almost uncomfortably tragic, even by country music standards. As for musical backup, the uncredited players are right in the pocket with heartfelt tinkling piano, honky tonk pedal steel, and all other expected stylings.

Coal Miner’s Daughter : Allmusic album Review : Unlike the song, autobiography and film of the same name, the album Coal Miners Daughter isnt a reflection on Loretta Lynns upbringing. Instead, its merely a standard, early 70s collection of originals and covers, all performed with gusto by Lynn. Coal Miners Daughter boasts a stronger, more consistent selection of material than most of her other albums from the period, and contains a number of her classics, like the title song and "Im a Honky Tonk Girl," plus a handful of lesser-known gems.

We Only Make Believe : Allmusic album Review : When two of the biggest country stars joined forces, the result was instant success. "After the First Is Gone," Loretta Lynn and Conway Twittys first duet single, soared to number one and crossed over to the pop charts, inaugurating a professional association that would yield over a decade of hits. We Only Make Believe, their first duet album, plays on the title of Twittys first big solo hit, "Its Only Make Believe," which the pair reinterprets as a country duet with steel guitar. "After the Fire Is Gone" is here, and Lynn and Twitty each contribute an original song. Lynns composition, "Dont Tell Me Youre Sorry," is reminiscent of the playful sparring songs of Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton and ends with some strained ad libs (theyd get better at that as time went on). Nothing on the album approaches the excellence of "After the Fire Is Gone," but We Only Make Believe is a good starting point for one of the archetypal duos in country music.

Lead Me On : Allmusic album Review : The title track of Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynns second duet album, Lead Me On, was the pairs second single and gave them their second number one hit. If they seemed charmed at this point, they would soon appear invincible as they hit the top spot again and again. The interesting thing about Lead Me On is that there is so much steel guitar on these cuts it sounds as though they didnt even try to make another crossover contender like "After the Fire Is Gone." Some of the material has a country-pop pedigree, namely Freddie Harts "Easy Loving" and Bobby Edwards "Youre the Reason," but the presentation is pure country. There are a few old-fashioned cheating songs of the sort at which Twitty and Lynn excel, a bow to honky tonk heritage with Webb Pierces "Back Street Affair," and one bit of modern slang wrapped in straight country music (Billy Edd Wheelers "You Blow My Mind"). As with their first duet album, the two conclude with a playful number, the frisky "Get Some Loving Done."

Here I Am Again… : Allmusic album Review : Here I Am is practically a concept album for all its songs about men. A few express love and devotion, such as "My Kind of Man," "Be Proud of Your Man," and the Top Three title track written by Shel Silverstein. But Loretta Lynn has always been a spitfire where gender relations are concerned, and she balances the sugar with characteristically sassy songs like "Theres a Built-In Trouble Maker in Every Man" and "A Woman a Day" ("keeps my man away"). Her personality is conveyed through her interpretive ability rather than her songwriting since she shares a composer credit on only one song. A by-the-numbers rendition of "Delta Dawn" is neither a benefit nor a detraction, but the touching "Where Do Babies Go" could have been a single considering all of Lynns well-received songs about family and reproduction.

They Don’t Make ’em Like My Daddy : Allmusic album Review : A real gem! Loretta Lynn has always been one of country musics great singers, but on this album she transcends the often rigid boundaries of country music and lays down some great honky tonk, rock & roll tunes, as well as several convincing tear-swept ballads. "Trouble in Paradise," for one, is an amazingly melodic and gritty rocker that sounds like the lost song of the Stones country catalogue, a perfect counterpart to "Dead Flowers" or "Torn & Frayed," and "Ive Never Been This Far Before" perfectly evokes the anxiety of first love.

Back to the Country : Allmusic album Review : It is a misleading album title from an artist who never left country except to market a fried chicken recipe. For one thing, it would have to be a country project to rope in the gang of session pickers here, the best of the best; names such as Charlie McCoy, Pete Wade, Grady Martin, Johnny Gimble, and the pope of the pedal steel, Hal Rugg. A bit of a tougher edge might have helped the song selection, though. It is as if the opening track, the notorious "The Pill," was considered so rowdy that they thought they had to tone it down after that. And though the choice of Tom T. Halls "You Love Everybody But You" is commendable, some of the other material just seems a little light for Lynn. Production by the great Owen Bradley is creamy smooth.

When the Tingle Becomes a Chill : Allmusic album Review : It is gratifying that, at the height of Loretta Lynns popularity, record buyers rejected the confusing and ridiculous "Red, White and Blue," a self-penned "Kaw-Liga" rip-off about Native American pride (or something). The song barely made the Top 20 at a time when Lynn was one of the hottest stars around. "Red, White and Blue" was probably intended to cash in on the American bicentennial, and the accompanying album, When the Tingle Becomes a Chill, bore an advertisement for Lynns autobiography, published the same year. The whole enterprise could be written off as crass money-making if not for the gorgeous title track, a big hit and by far the best cut on a very poor album. Does anyone really want to hear Loretta Lynn sing "Rhinestone Cowboy"? Embarrassing.

Two’s a Party : Allmusic album Review : Twos a Party may not have been one of Conway and Lorettas very best records -- there is a bit too much pop here, not enough country -- but the two singles, "Lovin What You Lovin Does to Me" and "I Still Believe in Waltzes," were good, and there were enough strong album tracks, such as "Id Rather Have What We Have" and "The State of Our Union," to make it worthwhile for dedicated fans.

Making Love From Memory : Allmusic album Review : An after-the-fact concept album cobbled together from various Lynn albums of the 70s. Despite the title song and "Deeper and Deeper," both of which lament relationships where the partners are basically going through the motions, most of the songs here are more upbeat and positive. Most of them are mid-tempo ballads (big exception: the sort of honky-tonk "Theres All Kinds of Smoke in the Barroom), and some ("When We Get Back Together," "I Dont Want to Heart It Anymore") have the sort of Captain and Tennile-ish mid-70s instrumental pop touches that spelled crossover to Nashville at the time.
