Allmusic Biography : One of the greatest singers in the history of country music, Patsy Cline also helped blaze a trail for female singers to assert themselves as an integral part of the Nashville-dominated country music industry. She was not alone in this regard; Kitty Wells had become a star several years before Clines big hits in the early 60s. Brenda Lee, who shared Clines producer, did just as much to create a country-pop crossover during the same era; Skeeter Davis briefly enjoyed similar success. Cline has the most legendary aura of any female country singer, however, perhaps due to an early death that cut her off just after she had entered her prime. Cline began recording in the mid-50s, and although she recorded quite a bit of material between 1955 and 1960 (17 singles in all), only one of them was a hit. That song, "Walkin After Midnight," was both a classic and a Top 20 pop smash. Those who are accustomed to Clines famous early-60s hits are in for a bit of a shock when surveying her 50s sessions (which have been reissued on several Rhino compilations). At times she sang flat-out rockabilly; she also tried some churchy tear-weepers. She couldnt follow up "Walkin After Midnight," however, in part because of an exploitative deal that limited her to songs from one publishing company. Circumstances were not wholly to blame for Clines commercial failures. She would have never made it as a rockabilly singer, lacking the conviction of Wanda Jackson or the spunk of Brenda Lee. In fact, in comparison with her best work, she sounds rather stiff and ill-at-ease on most of her early singles. Things took a radical turn for the better on all fronts in 1960, when her initial contract expired. With the help of producer Owen Bradley (who had worked on her sessions all along), Cline began selecting material that was both more suitable and of a higher quality than her previous outings. "I Fall to Pieces," cut at the very first session where Cline was at liberty to record what she wanted, was the turning point in her career. Reaching number one in the country charts and number 12 pop, it was the first of several country-pop crossovers she was to enjoy over the next couple of years. More important, it set a prototype for commercial Nashville country at its best. Owen Bradley crafted lush orchestral arrangements, with weeping strings and backup vocals by the Jordanaires, that owed more to pop (in the best sense) than country. The country elements were provided by the cream of Nashvilles session musicians, including guitarist Hank Garland, pianist Floyd Cramer, and drummer Buddy Harmon. Clines voice sounded richer, more confident, and more mature, with ageless wise and vulnerable qualities that have enabled her records to maintain their appeal with subsequent generations. When k.d. lang recorded her 1988 album Shadowland with Owen Bradley, it was this phase of Clines career that she was specifically attempting to emulate. Its arguable that too much has been made of Clines crossover appeal to the pop market. Brenda Lee, whose records were graced with similar Bradley productions, was actually more successful in this area (although her records were likely targeted toward a younger audience). Clines appeal was undeniably more adult, but she was always more successful with country listeners. Her final four Top Ten country singles, in fact, didnt make the pop Top 40. Despite a severe auto accident in 1961, Cline remained hot through 1961 and 1962, with "Crazy" and "Shes Got You" both becoming big country and pop hits. Much of her achingly romantic material was supplied by fresh talent like Hank Cochran, Harlan Howard, and Willie Nelson (who penned "Crazy"). Although her commercial momentum had faded slightly, she was still at the top of her game when she died in a plane crash in March of 1963, at the age of 30. She was only a big star for a couple of years, but her influence was and remains huge. While the standards of professionalism on her recordings have been emulated ever since, theyve rarely been complemented by as much palpable, at times heartbreaking emotion in the performances. For those who could do without some of more elaborate arrangements of her later years, many of her relatively unadorned appearances on radio broadcasts have been thankfully preserved and issued.

Showcase : Allmusic album Review : One of only three albums released in her lifetime, Showcase was the first set of sessions after her near-death in a car crash in 1961. The recordings teamed her up with the Jordanaires and produced the hits "Crazy" and "I Fall to Pieces" as well as new, more stylized versions of "Walkin After Midnight" and that singles original flip, "A Poor Mans Roses (Or a Rich Mans Gold)." This release features the second cover photo that was issued after her death, replacing the original cover art.

The Patsy Cline Story : Allmusic album Review : The Patsy Cline Story is a double-record, 24-track collection that Decca released in 1963, shortly after her tragic death. The compilation remains one of the strongest and most thorough retrospectives ever assembled, featuring most of her biggest hits -- "Walking After Midnight," "Shes Got You," "Crazy," "I Fall to Pieces," "Sweet Dreams" -- plus a number of lesser-known gems like "Why Cant He Be You" and "Leavin on Your Mind." The presence of these relatively unfamiliar tracks means that the album gives a more rounded and complete picture of Clines career than 12 Greatest Hits, even if it isnt as thorough as the subsequent four-disc box set The Patsy Cline Collection. In short, The Patsy Cline Story is the ideal introduction for a listener who wants a little more than the basics, but doesnt want to invest in a box set.

12 Greatest Hits : Allmusic album Review : Its not especially difficult to compile a satisfying and listenable album from Patsy Clines chart hits, and this solid and serviceable set offers a dozen simply brilliant songs from Clines catalog. The biggest and best-known hits are here -- "Walkin After Midnight," "Crazy," "Sweet Dreams," "Hes Got You" -- as well as a few equally beautiful lesser-knowns, such as "Youre Stronger Than Me" and "Why Cant He Be You," all of which capture her superb voice and the gloriously lush "countrypolitan" production from Owen Bradley at its best. In short, if youre a casual listener looking for a good single-disc Patsy Cline set, this is a great way to go, except that this happens to be the third go-round for this set, which was first issued on LP in 1967, given a new cover and upgraded to CD in 1988, and now issued again on CD with the rather generic 1967 cover art restored. This is great collection from a great artist, but you may want to make sure that you havent already bought this set already, and if you have, this edition doesnt offer any inducement to upgrade.

Country Great! : Allmusic album Review : Country Great is essentially a retitled re-release of Patsy Clines eponymous first album for Decca. Working with Owen Bradley, Cline tackles a number of different styles, from straight-ahead country to swinging blues, dazzling at each step of the way. There may not be any huge hits that jump out at the casual listener, but discerning fans will realize that any album containing "That Wonderful Someone," "Too Many Secrets," "Then Youll Know," and "Three Cigarettes (In an Ashtray)" is essential listening.

The Last Sessions : Allmusic album Review : Patsy Clines last sessions took place over four nights in February of 1963. Like the rest of her recordings, these were produced by Owen Bradley in Nashville with some A-list pickers of the time. Bradley himself played bass on the majority of the cuts, with Floyd Cramer on piano, Grady Martin on guitar, and the Jordanaires on vocals throughout. After eight years with Bradley and three with Decca, a label that allowed her and Bradley more freedom over song selection than her earlier Four Star contract, Cline was going at the pop market full-tilt. Gone are the crying steel guitars, the raw fiddles, the clanging rockabilly sound that often surfaced on her 50s work. While her voice sails effortlessly through "Blue Moon of Kentucky," for example, the band sounds like theyve been cleaned up and put in sober blue suits for the occasion. But by 1963, that wasnt the point anyway; the point was the kind of delicious agony Cline could fill her voice with on tunes like the shivery "Sweet Dreams (Of You)." Two of the 12 tunes from these four final sessions are not included here: "Faded Love" and "Ill Sail My Ship Alone."

Always : Allmusic album Review : Everyone knows by now that nothing is sacred, so the contents of ALWAYS should come as no surprise in a world where Kenny G has duetted with Satchmo and Clint Eastwood has arranged for Herbie Hancock and friends to recut the rhythm tracks from Birds classic bebop recordings. The justification here is that Owen Bradley, Clines original producer, is responsible for this particular repaving of memory lane. In 1980, Bradley took ten of Clines master tapes and wiped everything but the original lead vocals, brought in a cast of session folks, backup singers, and string players and remade vintage tunes like "I Fall To Pieces" and "Faded Love." The results, observe liner note authors Jay Orr and Don Roy, "sounded busier, even overwrought," but "the public judged the new tracks good, however...buying enough records to send the first single...to #18." Of course, even in 1960, Clines voice was the point of her recordings, and she still comes through loud and clear, with all her phrasing and emotional content intact. So if you want to hear what she would have sounded like if shed stepped into a studio 20 years later than she did, give ALWAYS a spin.

Cry Not for Me : Allmusic album Review : CRY NOT FOR ME brings together 20 of the 51 recordings Patsy Cline made for the Four Star company between 1955 and 1960. Unlike some of the many Cline compilations out there, this one actually includes songwriter credits and track lengths, but thats about it for documentation--only the MCA reissues include anything resembling personnel credits and session dates, and even they do so only sporadically. Having said that, theres plenty of great material here. Patsy Cline tried her hand at recording rockabilly, r&b--inflected; pop and torchy ballads as well as honky tonk during the first part of her career, all of which is well represented on CRY NOT FOR ME. "Three Cigarettes In An Ashtray" may be the archetypal Cline heartbreaker, but this set also includes the blue, late-night "Dont Ever Leave Me Again" and "Then Youll Know." "Turn The Cards Slowly," from her first session, is in the western swing vein, "Stop Look And Listen" is unrepentant rockabilly, and "The Heart You Break May Be Your Own" is straight up country. By the early 60s Cline had succeeded in crossing over to the pop market but on these recordings shes still playing it fast and loose.
