Otis Redding
Allmusic Biography : Otis Redding was one of the most powerful and influential artists to emerge from the Southern Soul music community in the 60s. A bold, physically imposing performer whose rough but expressive voice was equally capable of communicating joy, confidence, or heartache, Redding brought a passion and gravity to his vocals that was matched by few of his peers. He was also a gifted songwriter with a keen understanding of the creative possibilities of the recording process. Redding was born in 1941, and he hit the road in 1958 to sing with an R&B; combo, Johnny Jenkins & the Pinetoppers. In 1962, Redding traveled to Memphis, Tennessee with Jenkins when the latter scheduled a recording session for Stax Records. When Jenkins wrapped up early, Redding cut a song of his own, "These Arms of Mine," in 40 minutes; Stax released it as a single in May 1963, and the song became a major R&B; hit and a modest success on the Pop charts. Over the next four years, Redding would cut a handful of soul classics: "Mr. Pitiful," "Thats How Strong My Love Is," "Ive Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)," "Respect," "Tramp" (a duet with Carla Thomas), and "Shake." In 1967, Redding seemed poised for a major breakthrough with a legendary set at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival that solidified his status with hip rock & roll fans. Sadly, Redding would not live to see his greatest triumph: his most ambitious single, "(Sittin on The) Dock of the Bay," was released little over a month after his death in a place crash, becoming his first number one Pop hit and his signature tune. Redding would become a bigger star in death than in life, and his recordings would be regularly re-released and repackaged in the years to come, as his legend and his influence lived on into the 21st century.

Otis Ray Redding, Jr. was born on September 9, 1941 in Dawson, Georgia. His father was a sharecropper and part-time preacher who also worked at Robins Air Force Base near Macon. When Otis was three, his family moved to Macon, settling into the Tindall Heights housing project. He got his first experience as a musician singing in the choir at Macons Vineville Baptist Church, and as a pre-teen, he learned to play guitar, piano, and drums. By the time Redding was in high school, he was a member of the school band, and was regularly performing as part of a Sunday Morning gospel broadcast on Macons WIBB-AM. When he was 17, Redding signed up to compete in a weekly teen talent show at Macons Douglass Theater; he ended up winning the $5.00 grand prize 15 times in a row before he was barred from competition. Around the same time, Redding dropped out of school and joined the Upsetters, the band that had backed up Little Richard before the flamboyant piano man quit rock & roll to sing the gospel. Hoping to advance his career, Redding moved to Los Angeles in 1960, where he honed his songwriting chops and hooked up with a band called the Shooters. "Shes Alright," credited to the Shooters featuring Otis, was Reddings first single release, but he soon returned to Macon, where he teamed up with guitarist Johnny Jenkins and his group the Pinetoppers; Redding sang lead with the group and also served as Jenkins chauffeur, since the guitarist lacked a license to drive.

In early 1962, Otis Redding & the Pinetoppers issued a small label single, "Fat Gal" b/w "Shout Bamalama," and a few months later, Jenkins was invited to record some material for Stax Records, the up-and-coming R&B; label based in Memphis, Tennessee. Redding drove Jenkins to the studio and tagged along for the session; Jenkins wasnt having a good day and ended up calling it quits early. With 40 minutes left on the session clock, Redding suggested they give one of his songs a try, and with Jenkins on guitar, Otis and the studio band quickly completed a take of "These Arms of Mine." Stax wasted no time signing Redding to their Volt Records subsidiary, and "These Arms of Mine" was released in November 1962; the single rose to number 20 on the R&B; charts, and crossed over to the pop charts, peaking at number 85. Reddings follow-up, "Thats What My Heart Needs," arrived the following October, and peaked at 27 on the R&B; charts, but a stretch of singles released in 1964 failed to make much of impression.

Reddings luck changed in 1965. In January of that year, he released "Thats How Strong My Love Is," which hit number 2 R&B; and 71 Pop, while the B-side, "Mr. Pitiful," also earned airplay, with the song going to 10 R&B; and just missed hitting the Pop Top 40, stalling at 41. Reddings masterful "Ive Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)," issued in May 1965, shot to number 2 R&B;, and became his first single to make the Pop Top 40, peaking at 21. Redding landed another crossover hit in September 1965, as his song "Respect" hit number four R&B; and 35 Pop. By this time, Redding was becoming more ambitious as an artist, focusing on his songwriting skills, learning to play guitar, and becoming more involved with the arrangements and production on his sessions, helping to craft horn arrangements even though he couldnt write sheet music. He was also a tireless live performer, touring frequently and making sure he upstaged the other artists on the bill, as well as a savvy businessman, operating a successful music publishing concern and successfully investing in real estate and the stock market. In 1966, Redding also released two albums, The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads and Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul; he miraculously wrote and recorded most of the latter in a single day.

In 1966, Redding released a bold, impassioned cover of the Rolling Stones "Satisfaction" that was yet another R&B; and Pop hit and led some to speculate that perhaps Redding was the true author of the song. That same year, he was honored by the NAACP, and played an extended engagement at the Whisky A Go Go on Hollywoods Sunset Strip; he was the first major soul artist to play the historic venue, and the buzz over his appearances helped boost his reputation with white rock & roll fans. Later that year, Redding and several other Stax and Volt Records artists were booked for a package tour of Europe and the United Kingdom, where they were greeted as conquering heroes; the Beatles famously sent a limousine to pick Redding up when he arrived at the airport for his London gig. The British music magazine Melody Maker named Redding the Best Vocalist of 1966, an honor that had previously gone to Elvis Presley for ten consecutive years. Redding released two strong and eclectic albums in 1966, The Soul Album and Complete and Unbelievable: The Otis Redding Dictionary of Soul, which found him exploring contemporary pop tunes and old standards in his trademark soulful style, and a cut from Dictionary of Soul, an impassioned interpretation of "Try a Little Tenderness," became one of his biggest hits to date and a highlight of his live shows.

In early 1967, Redding headed into the studio with fellow soul star Carla Thomas to record a duet album, King & Queen, which spawned a pair of hits, "Tramp" and "Knock on Wood." Redding also introduced a protege, vocalist Arthur Conley, and a tune Redding produced for Conley, "Sweet Soul Music," became a million-selling hit. After the release of the Beatles Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band took psychedelia to the top of the charts and became a clarion call for the burgeoning hippie movement, Redding was inspired to write more thematically and musically ambitious material, and he solidified his reputation with what he called "the love crowd" with an electrifying performance at the Monterey Pop Festival, where he handily won over the crowd despite being the only deep soul artist on the bill. He next returned to Europe for more touring, and upon returning began work on new material, including a song he regarded as a creative breakthrough, "(Sittin On) The Dock of the Bay." Redding recorded the song at the Stax Studio in December 1967, and a few days later he and his band set out to play a string of dates in the Midwest. On December 10, 1967, Redding and his band boarded his Beechcraft H18 airplane en route to Madison, Wisconsin for another club date; the plane struggled in bad weather and crashed into Lake Monona in Wisconsins Dane County. The crash claimed the lives of Redding and everyone else on board, except for Ben Cauley of the Bar-Kays. Redding was only 26 when he died.

"(Sittin On) The Dock of the Bay" was released in January 1968 and quickly became Reddings biggest hit, topping both the Pop and R&B; charts, earning two Grammy awards, and maturing into a much-covered standard. An LP collection of single sides and unreleased cuts, titled The Dock of the Bay, followed in February 1968, and it was the first of a long string of albums compiled from the material Redding cut in his seven-year recording career. In 1989, Redding was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, he was granted membership into the BMI Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994, and he received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999.

Pain in My Heart : Allmusic album Review : This album works on so many different levels, that its essential listening for at least three categories of buyer -- fans of Otis Redding and Stax Records (natch), and more general soul listeners, and also anyone serious about their devotion to the work of the Rolling Stones and any other British invasion bands that covered American soul. Pain In My Heart was practically a road map to Mick Jagger and any number of other would-be white soul shouters in the UK, not just on the title track but also numbers like the hard rocking "Hey Hey Baby". For someone only 22 years old at the time of these sessions, and just two years past his first 45 rpm record, Redding exudes astonishing power, energy and boldness, though its all packaged with greater restraint than his subsequent records did. This was the only LP that Redding recorded during the lifetime of his idol, Sam Cooke, and his version of "You Send Me" is the least stylized of any of his renditions of Cookes songs -- later on, after Cookes death, he would throw more of himself into it. The very fact that he was covering Cookes soul classic shows an essential difference between Reddings and Cookes early LPs; as Redding was on a soul label, no one tried to make him into a pop singer as thatd done at RCA with Cooke -- thus, he was running on all cylinders right out of the starting gate, though he wouldnt get really interesting or show his full depth until two albums later. But even covering Rufus Thomass "The Dog", Richard Berrys "Louie Louie", Little Richards "Lucille", or Ben E. Kings "Stand By Me", hes already doing 70% of what we came to expect from Otis Redding in the years ahead -- his writing, apart from "Security", "These Arms Of Mine" and "Thats What My Heart Needs", was still somewhat less than memorable, but this is still a first-rate debut and a must-own CD.

The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads : Allmusic album Review : The aptly named Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads (1965) builds upon the strength and relative success of the vocalists solo debut long-player, Pain in My Heart (1964). The format -- blending a few originals with well-chosen covers -- remained consistent. However, increasingly evident is the strength of Reddings interaction with Booker T. Jones (organ), Steve Cropper (guitar/piano), Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass), and Al Jackson, Jr. (drums), aka Booker T. & the MGs. That relationship is sonically solidified with the singers seemingly innate ability to sculpt his leads around the powerful Memphis Horn section of Wayne Jackson (trumpet), Charles "Packy" Axton (tenor sax), and Floyd Newman (baritone sax). The results clearly speak for themselves with each of the albums dozen selections as all the proof one needs. Reddings testifyin on the opener, "Thats How Strong My Love Is," was powerful enough to garner the attention of several British Invasion bands. While it was the Rolling Stones punkish cover that grabbed the most attention, to equal effect the Hollies and the Creation are among the others to have been similarly inspired. Adding to that cyclical experience are the obviously sincere updates of the Chuck Willis R&B; heartbreaker "Its Too Late," "For Your Precious Love" -- which had been a huge hit for the Jerry Butler-led incarnation of the Impressions -- and Sam Cookes "Nothing Can Change This Love." Of the latter, Reddings take is arguably more powerful as the intimacy of his interpretation perfectly demonstrates the artists uncanny aptitude for emotional evocation. The Redding-penned titles likewise reflect his mentors, as "Chained and Bound" easily adopts the pleading conviction apparent in one facet of Cookes music. The samba groove of "I Want to Thank You" and the midtempo bounce of "A Woman, a Lover, a Friend" reflect the lighter, fun-loving side à la Cookes "Another Saturday Night" and "Everybody Loves to Cha Cha Cha." Saving the best for last, the Redding/Cropper collaboration on the upbeat and bluesy "Mr. Pitiful" -- a nickname given to Redding by a local Memphis DJ -- became the platters signature side, not to mention a significant crossover hit, landing in the Top Ten of the R&B; survey and just missing the Top 40 Pop Singles chart by a solitary position.

Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul : Allmusic album Review : Otis Reddings third album, and his first fully realized album, presents his talent unfettered, his direction clear, and his confidence emboldened, with fully half the songs representing a reach that extended his musical grasp. More than a quarter of this album is given over to Reddings versions of songs by Sam Cooke, his idol, who had died the previous December, and all three are worth owning and hearing. Two of them, "A Change Is Gonna Come" and "Shake," are every bit as essential as any soul recordings ever made, and while they (and much of this album) have reappeared on several anthologies, its useful to hear the songs from those sessions juxtaposed with each other, and with "Wonderful World," which is seldom compiled elsewhere. Also featured are Reddings spellbinding renditions of "(I Cant Get No) Satisfaction" (a song epitomizing the fully formed Stax/Volt sound and which Mick Jagger and Keith Richards originally wrote in tribute to and imitation of Reddings style), "My Girl," and "You Dont Miss Your Water." "Respect" and "Ive Been Loving You Too Long," two originals that were to loom large in his career, are here as well; the former became vastly popular in the hands of Aretha Franklin and the latter was an instant soul classic. Among the seldom-cited jewels here is a rendition of B.B. Kings "Rock Me Baby" that has the singer sharing the spotlight with Steve Cropper, his playing alternately elegant and fiery, with Wayne Jackson and Gene "Bowlegs" Millers trumpets and Andrew Loves and Floyd Newmans saxes providing the backing. Reddings powerful, remarkable singing throughout makes Otis Blue gritty, rich, and achingly alive, and an essential listening experience.

The Soul Album : Allmusic album Review : Otis Reddings talent began to surge, across songs and their stylesand absorbing them, with the recording of The Soul Album. In contrast to The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads, which was an advance over its predecessor but still a body of 12 songs of varying styles and textures, rising to peaks and never falling before an intense, soulful mid-range, The Soul Album shows him moving from strength to strength in a string of high-energy, sweaty soul performances, interspersing his own songs with work by Sam Cooke ("Chain Gang"), Roy Head ("Treat Her Right"), Eddie Floyd ("Everybody Makes a Mistake"), and Smokey Robinson ("Its Growing") and recasting them in his own style, so that theyre not "covers" so much as reinterpretations; indeed, "Chain Gang" is almost a rewrite of the original, though one suspects not one that Cooke would have disapproved of. He still had a little way to go as a songwriter -- the jewel of this undervalued collection is "Cigarettes and Coffee, co-authored by Eddie Thomas and Jerry Butler -- but as an interpreter he was now without peer, and his albums were now showing this remarkable, stunningly high level of consistency. Also significant on this album was the contribution of Steve Cropper, not only on guitar but as co-author of three songs.

Complete & Unbelievable: The Otis Redding Dictionary of Soul : Allmusic album Review : Recorded and released in 1966, Otis Reddings fifth album, Complete and Unbelievable: The Otis Redding Dictionary of Soul found the rugged-voiced deep soul singer continuing to expand the boundaries of his style while staying true to his rough and passionate signature sound. Reddings ambitious interpretations of "Tennessee Waltz" and especially "Try a Little Tenderness" found him approaching material well outside the traditional boundaries of R&B and allowing his emotionally charged musical personality to take them to new and unexpected places, and while his cover of "Day Tripper" wasnt his first attempt to confront the British Invasion, his invigorating and idiosyncratic take on the Beatles cynical pop tune proved Reddings view of the pop music universe was broader than anyone might have expected at the time. While Reddings experiments with covers on this set were successful and satisfying, it was on his own material that he sounded most at home, and "My Lovers Prayer" and "Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)" are deep Southern soul at its finest, with Reddings forceful but lovelorn voice delivering an Academy Award-worthy performance. And once again, the Stax house band (centered around Booker T. & the MGs and the Memphis Horns) prove themselves both thoroughly distinctive and remarkably adaptable, fitting into the nooks and crannies of Reddings voice with their supple but muscular performances. With the exception of his duet album with Carla Thomas, Complete and Unbelievable: The Otis Redding Dictionary of Soul was the last studio album Redding would fully complete before his death, and it proves his desire for a broader musical statement didnt begin when he encountered "the love crowd" at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967.

King & Queen : Allmusic album Review : Otis Redding never recorded a lighter, more purely entertaining record than King & Queen, a collection of duets with Stax labelmate Carla Thomas. In all likelihood inspired by a series of popular duets recorded by Marvin Gaye -- indeed, "It Takes Two," Gayes sublime collaboration with Kim Weston, is covered here -- the record serves no greater purpose than to allow Redding the chance to run through some of the eras biggest soul hits, including "Knock on Wood," "Tell It Like It Is,"and "When Something Is Wrong with My Baby," and while clearly not a personal triumph on a par with either Otis Blue or The Dictionary of Soul, the set is still hugely successful on its own terms. Redding and Thomas enjoy an undeniable chemistry, and they play off each other wonderfully; while sparks fly furiously throughout King & Queen, the albums highlight is the classic "Tramp," where their battle of the sexes reaches its fever pitch in supremely witty fashion.

The Dock of the Bay : Allmusic album Review : It was never supposed to be like this: "(Sittin On) The Dock of the Bay" was supposed to mark the beginning of a new phase in Otis Reddings career, not an ending. Producer/guitarist Steve Cropper had a difficult task to perform in pulling together this album, the first of several posthumous releases issued by Stax/Volt in the wake of Reddings death. What could have been a cash-in effort or a grim memorial album instead became a vivid, exciting presentation of some key aspects of the talent that was lost when Redding died. Dock of the Bay is, indeed, a mixed bag of singles and B-sides going back to July of 1965, one hit duet with Carla Thomas, and two, previously unissued tracks from 1966 and 1967. Theres little cohesion, stylistic or otherwise, in the songs, especially when the title track is taken into consideration -- nothing else here resembles it, for the obvious reason that Redding never had a chance to follow it up. Despite the mix-and-match nature of the album, however, this is an impossible record not to love. Cropper chose his tracks well, selecting some of the strongest and most unusual among the late singers orphaned songs: "I Love You More Than Words Can Say" is one of Reddings most passionate performances; "Let Me Come on Home" presents an ebullient Redding accompanied by some sharp playing, and "Dont Mess with Cupid" begins with a gorgeous guitar flourish and blooms into an intense, pounding, soaring showcase for singer and band alike. No one could complain about the album then, and it still holds more than four decades later.

The Immortal Otis Redding : Allmusic album Review : After the career of Otis Redding was cut tragically short in December of 1967, the tape vaults were plundered on several occasions to present fans with new product. The Immortal Otis Redding (1968) was the second posthumous long-player created from the artists backlog of material. Of the 11 selections, only the 45 rpm side "The Happy Song (Dum-Dum-De-De-De-Dum-Dum)" would have been familiar to enthusiasts of the late vocalist. As notated on the rear of the original jacket, these were among the last tunes Redding cut during what turned out to be a prophetic three-week stretch of sessions -- concluding just days prior to his untimely passing. One of which is the emotive opener "Ive Got Dreams to Remember," which bear two disparate sets of lyrics -- including one by Reddings spouse Zelma Redding. However, the words on the version commencing this effort were actually penned by Joe Rock, whose primary claim to fame was as author of the Skyliners doo wop smash "Since I Dont Have You." The midtempo "You Made a Man Out of Me" is marked by the hypnotic rhythm lines of Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass). It joins the preeminently funky "Hard to Handle" -- which easily bests the Black Crowes early-90s modernization -- and the sublime soul stomper "Nobodys Fault But Mine" as prime paradigms of his inimitable command. The Memphis Horns provide a profound sense of empathy to the aching "Thousand Miles Away," while the somber irony of the Redding original "A Waste of Time" ranks alongside his best ballads. The remake of Ray Charles "A Fool for You" provides an ideal vehicle for Redding to explore his R&B roots. It likewise leads one to beg the hypothetical possibilities of an entire project dedicated to Reddings interpretations of sounds that influenced him. Those very musical roots definitively manifest themselves in the closing spiritual, "Amen." Although Redding is credited with the arrangement, he was undoubtedly impacted by the Impressions 1964 hit that took a similar approach to the simple sacred singalong. On the whole, it can be argued that The Immortal Otis Redding wasnt quite on par with the half-dozen studio albums that the vocalist cut during his lifetime. By the same token, it should be acknowledged that any Otis Redding recordings should be considered welcome (if not mandatory) additions to all manner of listeners.

Love Man : Allmusic album Review : While Otis Redding was already one of the biggest stars in soul music when he died in a tragic plane crash in 1967, as is some times the case his star rose considerably after his passing, and this 1969 release dusted off a set of unreleased tracks Redding had cut in 1967, one of which (the title cut) went on to become a sizable chart hit. Love Man doesnt hold together quite as well as Reddings best proper albums, such as Otis Blue and Complete and Unbelievable: The Otis Redding Dictionary of Soul, but it also manages to avoid sounding like a collection of out-takes and leftovers; as an album its significantly stronger than the average R&B release of similar vintage, due to Reddings indefatigable energy and conviction as a vocalist and the ever-indomitable groove of Steve Cropper, Al Jackson, Jr., and the other members of the Stax Records studio crew. If Love Man is flawed, its not a matter of execution so much as material; while Reddings originals are good, none are quite up to the standards of "Cigarettes and Coffee" or "My Lovers Prayer", and covers like "A Lovers Question" and "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher" are not ideally suited to Reddings style. But even the flawed material helps prove just how strong Reddings work was, even under less than ideal circumstances, and Love Man makes it clear he never gave less than %110 percent in the studio.

Tell the Truth : Allmusic album Review : When a major artist dies, labels can usually be counted on to release anything and everything the artist had in the can, regardless of quality. In the case of Otis Redding, most of the posthumous releases were of a very high quality. One example is Tell the Truth, which was recorded the year he died, 1967, and remained unreleased until 1970. Though it falls short of essential, Truth has a lot to excite the soul icons more devoted followers. Tracks like "I Got the Will," "Snatch a Little Piece," and "Demonstration" are pure Redding -- frenzied, passionate, relentlessly gritty Memphis soul that makes no concessions to pop tastes or Northern soul. "Out of Sight" speaks volumes about him -- while others would have been afraid to cover a song written and defined by James Brown, Redding confidently tackles it with splendid results. Reddings last major hit, "Dock of the Bay," indicated that had he lived, he would have explored softer, Northern R&B sounds. But on this album, it was Memphis all the way.

The Best of Otis Redding : Allmusic album Review : This was another anthology that was definitive for many years, but lost a lot of value once Rhino began with its CD reissues. Atlantic hasnt bothered to reissue it as a CD, so its only available on cassette. The original sound was decent and the range of selections good, and it still can be a nice introduction to Reddings greatness. There wasnt much information available beyond the minimum details.

The Ultimate Otis Redding : Allmusic album Review : Yet another anthology package, this one from Warner Special Products. The Ultimate Otis Redding is a single-disc economy item designed for those who only want a small sample of Otis Reddings greatness. If youre only going to get a nibble, youd be better off getting one of his reissued albums rather than this sampler; it would be much more representative.

Remember Me : Allmusic album Review : For decades it was presumed by fans that the posthumous Otis Redding (acoustic guitar/vocals) studio platters The Dock of the Bay (1968), The Immortal Otis Redding (1968), Love Man (1969), and Tell the Truth (1970) had uncovered all the hidden and unreleased treasures from Reddings heartbreakingly brief yet appreciatively prolific career. Thankfully, archivist Roger Armstrong -- who is perhaps best known for his outstanding contributions to the U.K.-based Ace Records reissue imprint -- discovered nearly two dozen additional remnants and presents them on this single-disc anthology. As Stax Records authority Rob Bowman points out in his insightful liner notes essay, the label did not keep precise documentation concerning recording session dates and personnel. So, some detective (and possible guess) work was needed when chronologically placing a few of the lesser-known titles. That certainly doesnt detract from the experience of uncovering formerly shelved selections such as the greasy and unmistakable Memphis groove behind "Trick or Treat," or the high-octane horn punctuations on the inaugural take of "Loving by the Pound" that are clearly in the vein of what would turn up as "Respect." To demonstrate the evolutionary processes and the importance of his collaborative relationship with Steve Cropper (guitar) -- a second completely revamped approach rechristened "Pounds and Hundreds (LBs + 100s)" -- is offered midway through the compendium. Another treasure is the oft-rumored rendition of the achingly poignant "Ive Got Dreams to Remember" featuring unique lyrics by Reddings wife Zelma Redding. Little Richards influence is evident on the impassioned overhaul of "Send Me Some Lovin," which Redding re-forms with an undeniably singular and inspired interpretation. The alternate versions of "Respect," "Open the Door," "Come to Me," "Try a Little Tenderness," and the first two attempts of Reddings swan song, "(Sittin On) The Dock of the Bay," are arguably the most revealing moments on the entire package. Perhaps because the originals are so deeply ingrained in the psyche of Redding devotees, hearing the developmental stages or hearing the songs presented in a foreign context is nothing short of soul music manna. The one item that had been available prior to Remember Me (1992) is the concluding "Stay in School" message that was part of a larger campaign producing the promo-only Stay in School, Dont Be a Dropout long-player. Its a fun and lighthearted way to wrap up one of the best collections for R&B; aficionados or the just plain curious consumer alike.

Dreams to Remember: The Otis Redding Anthology : Allmusic album Review : Dreams to Remember: The Otis Redding Anthology presents an interesting dilemma. Certainly, the music on the double-disc set is superb -- all of his hits are here, along with a wealth of great album tracks and five live cuts from the Monterey International Pop Festival. The question is, was the collection necessary? Casual listeners who just want the hits will be satisfied with the excellent The Very Best of Otis Redding, Vol. 1, while those who want to dig deeper will find the four-disc box Otis! The Definitive Otis Redding essential, or will opt for the actual albums. Dreams to Remember falls somewhere between the two extremes, containing too much music for the casual listener and not being extensive enough for serious listeners. Perhaps realizing this, Rhino added several tracks here that werent featured on the box set, but any true collector will have these songs on the original albums. So, Dreams to Remember is in limbo -- a fine collection that isnt really necessary. Its not a bad choice, to be sure, but The Very Best of Otis Redding, Vol. 1 and Otis! are better choices, depending on your tastes.

The Very Best of Otis Redding : Allmusic album Review : This is a wonderful two-disc overview of Otis Reddings brief career, and it hits most of the high points, including such classics as "Respect," "Try a Little Tenderness," "Pain in My Heart," and "(Sittin On) The Dock of the Bay." Also included are Reddings near-definitive version of Sam Cookes "A Change Is Gonna Come" and the gorgeous (and heartbreaking) "Ive Got Dreams to Remember," a Redding original.

Deep Memphis Soul : Allmusic album Review : No mere 15-track compilation is enough to do justice to the enduring brilliance of Otis Redding, but the Starbucks-produced Deep Memphis Soul is an otherwise serviceable overview of the singers classic Stax sides, compiling most of his biggest and most influential hits. Given that the target demographic is Starbucks customers who likely make few trips into traditional record stores, the inclusion of classics "(Sittin On) The Dock of the Bay," "Try a Little Tenderness," and "Ive Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)" should fulfill the quota of your average listener, but audiences familiar only with the hits will find much more to savor here -- Redding did indeed write the dictionary of soul, and records like "Shake," "Hard to Handle," and "Tramp" (his duet with Carla Thomas) are textbook definitions of the form. A solid introductory course, complete with excellent sound and deluxe packaging.

Love Songs : Allmusic album Review : Sixteen of Reddings more romantically inclined performances, largely taken from minor hit singles and album tracks, although "Try a Little Tenderness," "Ive Been Loving You Too Long," "Thats How Strong My Love Is," and "Pain In My Heart" are all among his most popular (and best) outings. If Redding had not had such a large and varied output and this actually represented his best material, it would certainly deserve four stars, or perhaps even more. It isnt a best-of, of course, which is why it only receives an average rating, although the music is fine. Certainly its a good disc (and well annotated by David Nathan), with songs like "My Girl" and "I Love You More Than Words Can Say" that will be unfamiliar to many, but its hard to imagine who needs it. The committed Otis Redding fan probably has it all, and the Otis Redding dilettante will want a greatest-hits package instead, especially considering that this lacks such essential items as "Dock of the Bay" and "Respect."

The Definitive Soul Collection : Allmusic album Review : Rhino released a comprehensive double-disc Otis Redding collection in 1998 called Dreams to Remember: The Otis Redding Anthology. It was a generous 50 tracks and contained not only his hits, but lots of great lesser-known singles and album tracks, plus some live recordings. Eight years later, Rhino released a second Otis Redding collection, 2006s The Definitive Soul Collection, which isnt nearly as comprehensive or definitive as Dreams to Remember. Its a good 20 tracks slimmer for one thing, nor is it as far-ranging in its scope or as attractively packaged, for that matter. But while The Definitive Soul Collection pales when judged against its stellar predecessor, taken on its own terms, its quite a good compilation, containing all of his biggest songs -- "These Arms of Mine," "Mr. Pitiful," "Ive Been Loving You Too Long," "Respect," "I Cant Turn You Loose," "Try a Little Tenderness," and "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" -- along with a good sampling of the best of the rest. Dreams to Remember may be the first choice for anybody looking for a double-disc set, but if thats hard to find, this is a good substitute.

Original Album Series : Allmusic album Review : The very face of classic Southern soul is Otis Redding, whose incendiary and passionate singing and stage presence came as close as anyones to transferring the energy, explosiveness, and drive of Southern gospel into the secular pop world of soul. Otis Reddings recording career really only lasted five years, from 1962 through 1967 (seven studio albums in all), and the balance of it, along with his biggest hits, really only came in the last two years of that time, with his biggest hit and first number one, "(Sittin On) The Dock of the Bay," released after his death. All of it was enough, though, to establish Redding as the greatest performer of the classic deep soul era, a designation he undoubtedly deserves. This five-disc set collects five of Reddings Atco albums in one package, including 1964s Pain in My Heart, 1965s The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads, and 1966s Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul, The Soul Album, and Complete & Unbelievable: The Otis Redding Dictionary of Soul.

Lonely & Blue: The Deepest Soul of Otis Redding : Allmusic album Review : Otis Reddings recording career really only lasted five years, from 1962 through 1967 (seven studio albums in all), and the balance of it, along with his biggest hits, really only came in the last two years of that time, with his biggest hit and first number one, "(Sittin On) The Dock of the Bay," released after his death. All of it was enough, though, to establish Redding as the greatest performer of the classic deep soul era, a designation he undoubtedly deserves. There are plenty of greatest-hits-type collections out there for those interested in Reddings pop and R&B; chart impact, and at first glance, Lonely & Blue: The Deepest Soul of Otis Redding seems like another of those. It has some of his classic hits, true, like "Ive Been Loving You Too Long," "Free Me," and "These Arms of Mine," but the rest of the dozen tracks are more obscure, although theyre neither filler nor randomly chosen, each contributing to the overall theme, emerging as a powerfully unified compilation full of the pain, loss, and yearning that go along with being in love. Then theres the look of this set. Its done up to look like a Stax album release from the 1960s, and even the liner notes are in the present tense, as if this were simply a long lost reissued Redding album with nothing changed as it pops up again in the 21st century. It pulls off the hat trick of being a nice introduction to the deeper side of Reddings catalog, an intelligent, carefully considered facsimile of one of his original Stax albums, and a fresh statement on the issues and risks of love, all of which lead the listener straight back to the greatness of Otis Redding. Its the way reissues should work in a perfect world, not just presenting old material, but also arranging it in a striking new manner that leads us back to a great artist we thought we already knew.

The Complete Stax/Volt Singles Collection : Allmusic album Review : The very face of classic Southern soul is Otis Redding, whose incendiary and passionate singing and stage presence came as close as anyones to transferring the energy, explosiveness, and drive of Southern gospel into the secular pop world of soul. This wonderful three-disc, 70-track set collects all of Reddings singles, both the A- and B-sides, including a couple of holiday releases, plus his singles with fellow Stax Records star Carla Thomas, in the original mono mixes. Mono is how these tracks were meant to be heard, mixed to sound powerful blasting from radios and jukeboxes, and even played through 21st century sound devices, these mixes are incredible to hear, all power and passion. This was -- and is -- soul.
