Ramones
Allmusic Biography : The Ramones may or may not have invented punk rock, but they were inarguably the most important band in punk history, creating the stylistic prototype that would be followed by countless bands who emerged in their wake. They were informed by the thunder and flash of the Who and the MC5, the speed and primitivism of Iggy and the Stooges, and the alternately sullen and goofy musings of 60s garage rock, but the Ramones synthesized their influences into something raw and revolutionary, a fury of pounding rhythms and downstroked guitars married to rudimentary melodies and comically absurd lyrics that both mocked and celebrated popular culture and teenage life. The Ramones were tuneful, aggressive, and challenging in their embrace of minimalist fury, and while bands from the Clash and the Sex Pistols to Rancid and Green Day would build on their formula, its essentially impossible to imagine any of those bands, or punk as we know it, without the Ramones guiding example. Their first four albums -- Ramones (1976), Leave Home (1977), Rocket to Russia (1978), and Road to Ruin (1979) -- were defining works for the band and the movement they helped inspire, and songs like "Blitzkrieg Bop," "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue," "Pinhead," "Rockaway Beach," and "I Wanna Be Sedated" would become anthems even if they were never embraced by radio. From 1980 onward, the Ramones recorded a long series of albums in which they often toyed with their formula in an effort to attract a larger audience (working with legendary producer Phil Spector on 1980s End of the Century, adding keyboard accents on 1986s Animal Boy, recording a batch of covers on 1993s Acid Eaters), though their best work of this era (especially 1984s Too Tough to Die) was usually their most elemental, as they focused on what they did first and best.

Based in the Forest Hills section of Queens, New York, the Ramones formed in 1974. Originally, the band was a trio consisting of Joey Ramone (vocals, drums; born Jeffrey Hyman, May 19, 1951), Johnny Ramone (guitar; born John Cummings, October 8, 1951), and Dee Dee Ramone (bass; born Douglas Colvin, September 18, 1951), with Tommy Ramone (born Tom Erdelyi, January 29, 1952) acting as the groups manager. All of the groups members adopted the last name "Ramone" and dressed in torn blue jeans and leather jackets, in homage to 50s greaser rockers. The group played their first concert on March 30, 1974, at New Yorks Performance Studio. Two months after the show, Joey switched to vocals and Tommy became the bands drummer. By the end of the summer, the Ramones had earned a residency at CBGB. For the next year, they played regularly at the nightclub, earning a dedicated cult following and inspiring several other artists to form bands with similar ideals. All of the Ramones sets clocked in at about 20 minutes, featuring an unrelenting barrage of short, barely two-minute songs. By the end of 1975, the Ramones secured a recording contract with Sire; discounting Patti Smith, they were the first New York punk band to sign a contract.

Early in 1976, the Ramones recorded their debut album for just over $6,000.00. The resulting album, Ramones, was released in the spring, gained some critical attention, and managed to climb to 111 on the U.S. album charts. On July 4, the band made their debut appearance in Britain, where their records were becoming a big influence on a new generation of bands. Throughout 1976, the Ramones toured constantly, inaugurating nearly 20 years of relentless touring. By the end of the year, the group released their second album, Ramones Leave Home. While the album just scraped the U.S. charts, Leave Home became a genuine hit in England in the spring of 1977, peaking at number 48. By the summer of 1977, the Sex Pistols and the Ramones were seen as the two key bands in the punk rock revolution, but where the Pistols imploded, the Ramones kept on rolling. Following the U.K. Top 40 hit "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker," the Ramones released their third album, Rocket to Russia, in the fall of 1977.

Tommy Ramone left the band in the spring of 1977, although he produced the groups subsequent album. He was replaced by former Voidoid Marc Bee, who immediately changed his name to Marky Ramone. With their new drummer in place, the Ramones recorded their fourth album, Road to Ruin, which was released in the fall. Road to Ruin marked the bands first significant attempt to change their sound; not only were there stronger bubblegum, girl group, surf, and 60s pop influences on the music, it was the first of their albums to run over a half-hour. Although their sound was more accessible, it didnt gain the band a noticeably larger following. Neither did Rock N Roll High School, the 1979 Roger Corman film in which the Ramones had a pivotal part. The soundtrack to Rock N Roll High School and the U.K.-only live album Its Alive were the bands only releases of 1979. For most of the year, they were in the studio recording their fifth album with legendary 60s pop producer Phil Spector. The title song to the Corman movie was the first track released from the sessions, although the soundtrack album did feature a number of older Ramones songs remixed by Spector. End of the Century, the Spector-produced Ramones album, finally appeared in January of 1980 to mixed reviews. Despite the lukewarm reception to the album, the records cover of the Ronettes "Baby I Love You" became their only Top Ten British hit; in America, none of the singles made an impact, although the record became their biggest hit, peaking at number 44.

The Ramones continued their attempts at crossover success with their sixth album, Pleasant Dreams, which was released in 1981. Featuring a production by former Hollies and 10cc member Graham Gouldman, the record was a commercial disappointment in both America and England. The band was relatively quiet during 1982, spending most of their time touring. In the spring of 1983, the band returned with Subterranean Jungle, which was produced by Ritchie Cordell and Glen Koltkin, the heads of the American indie label Beserkley Records. Not only did Subterranean Jungle fail to gain the band the larger audience they desired, it continued the erosion of the bands die-hard fan base, as well as their decline in the eyes of many rock critics. Following the albums release, Marky Ramone left the band; he was replaced by Richard Beau, a former member of the Velveteens, who changed his name to Richie Ramone.

With 1984s Too Tough to Die, the Ramones delivered a belated response to Americas burgeoning hardcore punk scene that was largely produced by Tommy Erdelyi. The album helped restore their artistic reputation, as did the 1985 single "Bonzo Goes to Bitburg," an attack on President Ronald Reagans 1985 visit to Germany. Instead of continuing with the sound of Too Tough to Die, the Ramones began pursuing a more streamlined, stylized, and conventional take on their songwriting formula with 1986s Animal Boy. This was a direction the group followed for the remaining ten years of their career. Following the release of 1987s Halfway to Sanity, Richie Ramone left the band and Marky Ramone re-joined the group. In 1988, the career retrospective Ramones Mania appeared. In 1989, the Ramones contributed the theme song to the Stephen King movie Pet Semetary, and the track was included on Brain Drain, which was released in the summer of that year. After its release, the groups bassist, Dee Dee Ramone, left the band to pursue a career as a rapper called Dee Dee King; after his debut rap recording failed miserably, he formed the band Chinese Dragons. Dee Dee was replaced by C.J. Ramone (born Christopher John Ward).

In the early 90s, the Ramones sobered up, with both Joey and Marky undergoing treatment for alcoholism. The band returned to recording in 1992, first releasing the live Loco Live and then Mondo Bizarro, their first studio album in three years. Mondo Bizarro turned out to be a commercial failure, as did their 1994 covers album, Acid Eaters. Following the release of Acid Eaters, the mainstream guitar rock audience in America finally embraced punk rock in the form of young bands like Green Day and the Offspring. Sensing that the climate may have been right for the crossover success they had desired for so many years, the Ramones immediately followed Acid Eaters with Adios Amigos, claiming that unless the new album sold in substantial numbers, the band would call it quits after a final farewell tour. Adios Amigos only spent two weeks in the charts. Nevertheless, the Ramones embarked on a long farewell tour that ran throughout the rest of 1995. The band was set to split in the beginning of 1996 when they were offered a slot on the sixth Lollapalooza, and they toured with the festival that summer.

Following the completion of the tour, the Ramones parted ways, 20 years after the release of their first album. Just a few years later, Joey Ramone passed away on April 15, 2001, at age 49, the victim of lymphoma. Little more than a year after Joeys death, Dee Dee Ramone was found dead in his home in Los Angeles on June 5, 2002. Johnny Ramone passed away two years later on September 15, 2004 after a long battle with cancer. Ten years later, on July 11, 2014, Tommy Ramone -- the last remaining member of the original Ramones foursome -- died of cancer at his home in Queens, New York. Despite the passing of all four original members, the Ramones legacy continued to be celebrated in a series of new archival projects. In 2016, Rhino Records coordinated a Super Deluxe 40th Anniversary Edition of the bands 1976 debut, featuring a wealth of alternate takes, an unreleased live concert, and an LP featuring a newly created mono mix of the album. Similarly expanded versions of Leave Home and Rocket to Russia followed in 2017, and a Super Deluxe Road to Ruin appeared in 2018.

Ramones : Allmusic album Review : With the three-chord assault of "Blitzkrieg Bop," The Ramones begins at a blinding speed and never once over the course of its 14 songs does it let up. The Ramones is all about speed, hooks, stupidity, and simplicity. The songs are imaginative reductions of early rock & roll, girl group pop, and surf rock. Not only is the music boiled down to its essentials, but the Ramones offer a twisted, comical take on pop culture with their lyrics, whether its the horror schlock of "I Dont Wanna Go Down to the Basement," the gleeful violence of "Beat on the Brat," or the maniacal stupidity of "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue." And the cover of Chris Montezs "Lets Dance" isnt a throwaway -- with its single-minded beat and lyrics, it encapsulates everything the group loves about pre-Beatles rock & roll. They dont alter the structure, or the intent, of the song, they simply make it louder and faster. And thats the key to all of the Ramones music -- its simple rock & roll, played simply, loud, and very, very fast. None of the songs clock in at any longer than two and half minutes, and most are considerably shorter. In comparison to some of the music the album inspired, The Ramones sounds a little tame -- its a little too clean, and compared to their insanely fast live albums, it even sounds a little slow -- but theres no denying that it still sounds brilliantly fresh and intoxicatingly fun.

Leave Home : Allmusic album Review : Second verse, not quite like the first.... Released a mere nine months after the Ramones groundbreaking debut, 1977s Leave Home was in many respects a continuation of the sound and attitude of the first album, with its unrelenting barrage of chunky guitar downstrokes and Mad Magazine-influenced lyrical absurdity. But even a cursory listen reveals the Ramones had made plenty of progress in less than a year. The performances on Leave Home are tighter and better focused than they were on Ramones, and Tommy Ramones minimalist drumming gained a bit of swing that was absent on the debut. The Ramones sound more comfortable with their attack, never quite as simple as it seems, while also bearing down with a greater speed and ferocity that finds them hitting their stride in the studio. Just as importantly, the production is noticeably more polished this time out, which helps more than one might expect. Without the strict left/right separation of Ramones, Leave Home is more friendly to the ear, and the increased clarity does wonders for the passionate bleat of Joeys vocals, Johnnys unrelenting Mosrite abuse, and the melodic details that lurk beneath the surface of the Ramones wall of noise. And if the first album was full of immediate classics, Leave Home has more than its share of great tunes, including the anthemic "Pinhead" and "Commando," the high-velocity teen romance of "Oh Oh I Love Her So" (certainly the greatest love story ever set at a Burger King), and the catchy invitations to bad behavior in "Carbona Not Glue" and "Glad to See You Go." Leave Home wasnt as startling as the Ramones first album, and its not quite as strong and consistent as their masterpiece Rocket to Russia, but it was a positive step forward for the Pride of Forest Hills, and its one of their best and most satisfying albums.

Rocket to Russia : Allmusic album Review : The Ramones provided the blueprint and Leave Home duplicated it with lesser results, but the Ramones third album, Rocket to Russia, perfected it. Rocket to Russia boasts a cleaner production than its predecessors, which only gives the Ramones music more force. It helps that the group wrote its finest set of songs for the album. From the mindless, bopping opening of "Cretin Hop" and "Rockaway Beach" to the urban surf rock of "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker" and the ridiculous anthem "Teenage Lobotomy," the songs are teeming with irresistibly catchy hooks; even their choice of covers, "Do You Want to Dance?" and "Surfin Bird," provide more hooks than usual. The Ramones also branch out slightly, adding ballads to the mix. Even with these (relatively) slower songs, the speed of the album never decreases. However, the abundance of hooks and slight variety in tempos makes Rocket to Russia the Ramones most listenable and enjoyable album -- it doesnt have the revolutionary impact of The Ramones, but its a better album and one of the finest records of the late 70s.

Road to Ruin : Allmusic album Review : When the Ramones started work on their fourth album, Road to Ruin, in early 1978, they were in something of a bind. Their previous three albums had helped spark the punk revolution and established them as one of the greatest bands in the long and checkered history of rock & roll, but they werent getting the sales that their label wanted or breaking out in the mainstream the way some of their N.Y.C. compatriots like Blondie had. The Ramones also wanted those things, so they made some major moves. One switch was personnel-based, as Tommy Ramone passed the sticks to Marc Bell, who had played with Dust and Richard Hell. Tommy stayed on as producer, though, and he and Ed Stasium enacted the biggest revamp. Once the band had laid down the basic tracks for the new batch of songs, the pair painstakingly added guitar, bass, and keyboard overdubs and mixed them to get a much fuller and polished sound. By the time they were done, sometimes barely anything from the original sessions remained. This approach worked well with the more diverse songs the band brought to the album. Along with the usual batch of three-chord rockers (including some new entries in the I Wanna/Dont Wanna category), they wrote jangling pop songs ("Dont Come Close") and melancholy ballads (Dee Dees painfully introspective "Questioningly"), and covered the Searchers "Needles and Pins" with a lightly poppy touch. The expanded arrangements work really well on these songs -- the twanging bassline and keening guitar solo add a surprisingly effective country touch to "Dont Come Close" -- and they dont dilute the powerful punch of the thundering rockers like "I Dont Want You" and "Bad Brain." The classic "I Wanna Be Sedated" is a perfect example of how well the new approach worked for the band. The guitar overdubs give the song a huge sound, the massive handclaps and Bells thumping drums drive the beat home like jackhammers, and Joeys voice comes through like a 1,000-watt beacon. His vocals reached their peak right around this time; he carried the faster songs with authority and dug into the ballads completely, transmitting an almost painful amount of emotion. Its clear throughout that Tommy and Stasium definitely had the best interests of the band in mind as they aimed the sound a little closer to the mainstream, and the changes they made served to open it up in interesting ways. Sure, some of the raw power of the previous albums was lost, but it was replaced by deeper feelings and emotion. The question was whether Ramones fans really wanted those two things, or did they just want more songs about Sheena. Thats debatable, but whats clear is that the bands noble efforts didnt pay off with the general record-buying public, and Road to Ruin was their worst-charting release to that point.

It’s Alive : Allmusic album Review : One of the greatest live albums of all time, Its Alive captures the Ramones at their absolute peak. Recorded at Londons Rainbow Theater on New Years Eve 1977, the album contains 28 songs (every one a classic) from the bands landmark first three albums: Ramones, Ramones Leave Home, and Rocket to Russia performed at breakneck speed in under an hour. In fact, the band only pauses long enough for bassist Dee Dee to count off the next tune -- "one-two-three-four!" -- and for singer Joey to complain about some bad chicken vindaloo. It has often been said that the Ramones helped save rock & roll by making it fun again -- Its Alive is the perfect case in point. Long live the Ramones!

End of the Century : Allmusic album Review : Road to Ruin found the Ramones stretching their signature sound to its limits; even though there were several fine moments, nearly all of them arrived when the group broke free from the suddenly restrictive loud-fast-hard formula of their first records. Considering that the Ramones did desire mainstream success and that they had a deep love for early-60s pop/rock, its not surprising that they decided to shake loose the constrictions of their style by making an unabashed pop album, yet it was odd that Phil Spector produced End of the Century, because his painstaking working methods seemingly clashed with the Ramones instinctual approach. However, the Ramones were always more clever than they appeared, so the matching actually worked better than it could have. Spectors detailed production helped bring "Rock n Roll High School" and "Do You Remember Rock n Roll Radio?" to life, yet it also kept some of the punkier numbers in check. Even so, End of the Century is more enjoyable than its predecessor, since the record has stronger material, and in retrospect, its one of their better records of the 80s.

Pleasant Dreams : Allmusic album Review : End of the Century didnt make the Ramones into the stars they so wanted to be, so they hooked up with another 60s icon, Graham Gouldman, for its follow-up, Pleasant Dreams. Oddly, Gouldman directs the band away from their bubblegum, British Invasion, and surf fetishes toward acid rock and heavy metal. They still manage to squeak out a couple of irresistibly catchy songs, but the production is too clean to qualify as punk, and the music itself has lost sight of the infectious qualities that made their earlier records such fun. Yet those flaws seem endearing compared to the metallic meanderings of their late-80s records.

Subterranean Jungle : Allmusic album Review : Tentatively returning toward punk, or at least new wave, the Ramones turned in their most enjoyable record since Rocket to Russia with Subterranean Jungle. Producers Ritchie Cordell and Glen Kolotkin were the heads of the edgy power pop and punk label Bomp!, so they steered the Ramones back toward the 60s pop infatuation that provided the foundation for their early records. Its a strategy that pays off well -- for the most part, the groups originals are so punchy and catchy that they make the pair of covers superfluous. Comprised of a set of unabashedly hook-laden songs and driven by more subtle rhythms, Subterranean Jungle may not be a punk record in the strictest sense of the word, yet the Ramones havent sounded quite as alive in a long, long while.

Too Tough to Die : Allmusic album Review : With the Ramones original drummer, Tommy Erdelyi, producing, the group returns to simple, scathing punk rock on Too Tough to Die. The group takes the big guitar riffs of Subterranean Jungle and makes them shorter and heavier. The Ramones rhythms are back up to jackhammer speed and the songs are down to short, terse statements. The results read like a reaction to hardcore punk, but the Ramones are more melodic than any hardcore band, as well as smarter than most. Apart from the occasional foray into pop, such as the surprisingly effective Dave Stewart-produced "Howling at the Moon," the album is a sterling set of lethal punk, the best the Ramones had made since the end of the 70s. It was also the last great record they would ever make.

Animal Boy : Allmusic album Review : Animal Boy wasnt a very happy record for the Ramones. Since the release of Too Tough to Die (a slight return to form) nearly two years earlier, the bands fortunes had gone from bad to worse; interest in the band kept dwindling with every release and the "bruthas" were constantly at each others throat. But their desperation only became apparent when they started seriously altering their sound in search of a lucky break. With Animal Boy, producer Jean Beauvoir (of Plasmatics infamy) attempted to update the bands sound with the commercial conventions of the day, meaning keyboards and synthesizers. Opener "Somebody Put Something in My Drink," for instance, wastes an aggressive vocal performance from Joey Ramone by supporting it with a shamelessly polished synthesizer backing track. The balls-out title song momentarily simplifies things once again, but the album continues to progress in hit-and-miss fashion, culminating with the unbearably soft "Something to Believe In" -- with bright synths taking over completely and no guitar in sight, it is a career low. Of note, the album does contain one of the bands most clearly political statements in first single "Bonzo Goes to Bitburg," written about President Ronald Reagans ill-advised visit to Germanys Bitburg cemetery, the site of many Nazi graves. Interestingly, the song was later retitled "My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down" prior to the albums release, after vehement protests from guitarist Johnny Ramone, a fervid conservative. One of many mid-80s blunders, Animal Boy is best left forgotten from the Ramones otherwise remarkable late-70s legacy.

Halfway to Sanity : Allmusic album Review : Although Halfway to Sanity still bears remnants of the heavy guitar attack of Animal Boy, its actually a much sharper record than its predecessor, since it doesnt ignore the Ramones trashy pop roots. Theres still a noticeable lack of consistent material, yet cuts like "Go Lil Camaro Go" and "I Know Better Now" have solid hooks, and a handful of other songs suggest that the Ramones could have handled their second decade a little more gracefully than they actually did. It may not be as strong as Subterranean Jungle or Too Tough to Die, but in many ways, Halfway to Sanity is the last time the Ramones still sounded like they mattered.

Ramones Mania : Allmusic album Review : Ramones Mania is a relentless collection of 30 tracks from the Ramones first ten albums, ranging from the classic Ramones to the less-than-classic Halfway to Sanity. Although not all of their great 70s songs are included, it boils down the highlights from the inconsistent 80s albums quite effectively, making it a useful summation of their peak period, even if the sequencing is not chronological.

Brain Drain : Allmusic album Review : Though it contains one of the Ramones biggest radio hits, "Pet Sematary" (written for Stephen Kings movie of the same name), 1989s Brain Drain finds the "bruthas" from Queens at an all-time inspirational low. And since the aforementioned track is actually reviled by most of the bands hardcore fans, the listener has to make do with opener "I Believe in Miracles" and closer "Merry Christmas (I Dont Want to Fight Tonight)," which bookend the amazingly dull tracks in between with the records only bright moments. The final Ramones album recorded for Sire Records (their label from day one), Brain Drain was sadly also the last to feature bassist and creative leader Dee Dee Ramone.

All the Stuff (and More), Volume 2 : Allmusic album Review : The second volume of All the Stuff (And More) compiles the Ramones third and fourth albums -- Rocket to Russia and Road to Ruin -- onto one compact disc, adding several live cuts, demos, and B-sides as bonus tracks. Like its predecessor, All the Stuff (And More), Vol. 2 suffers slightly from its length, which happens to contradict the loud-fast nature of the bands songs and albums, yet the music isnt hurt by its presentation. Rocket to Russia is one of the classic rock & roll albums, and while Road to Ruin isnt as consistent, it does have its moments, making All the Stuff (And More), Vol. 2 a good bargain.

While the music on the disc is terrific and timeless, having both albums on one disc actually dilutes some of its impact, since the records were designed as a relentless rush of brief, speedy songs; in this form, the assault becomes a little tiring, and the distinctions between the two albums -- and they are there -- are lost. Still, these are minor flaws, especially considering that the music on All the Stuff (And More), Vol. 1 is essential for any rock & roll library.

Loco Live : Allmusic album Review : Between 1976 and 1978, the Ramones could seemingly do no wrong, and Its Alive, the album that preserved their 1977-going-on-1978 New Years Eve show in London for the ages, captured the pride of Forest Hills at the peak of their form, turning three-chord downstroke into the stuff of magic. By 1990, the bands albums were generally good but not great, and it seemed as if their days of studio glory were behind them. But anyone who ever saw the Ramones live will tell you that right up to the end, they never failed to deliver on-stage, and if Loco Live isnt quite up to the same level as Its Alive, it proves these guys always gave their fans the sweat, muscle, and cool tunes they came to see. The buzz of Johnny Ramones guitar is still gloriously relentless, Joey yelps like he means it (and if he has a little more to say between songs, most of its cool), Marky remains King of the Big Beat, and C.J. plays at least as well as Dee Dee (and is nearly as good at yelling "wuntootreeFAH!"). And if the presence of "Mamas Boy," "Someone Put Something in My Drink," and "I Believe in Miracles" dont exactly give Loco Live an edge over the first-three-albums set list of Its Alive, the truth is nearly all the newer songs sound stronger (and faster) on-stage, and the old stuff is, as always, a joy to behold. If youre going to buy a Ramones live album, the blazing Its Alive is the one to get, but Loco Live proves these old soldiers never gave up the fight -- 13 years on, they were still loud and proud, and you cant help but love em for it.

Mondo Bizarro : Allmusic album Review : A new record deal and the addition of an enthusiastic new bassist (C.J. Ramone) revitalized the Ramones, making Mondo Bizarro the bands strongest release in years. Returning longtime producer Ed Stasium certainly deserves much credit for helping the "bruthas" rediscover their unique combination of pop hooks, savage guitar riffing, and most importantly, sense of humor. This is immediately obvious on songs like "Censorshit" (which addresses the Tipper Gore - P.M.R.C. issue), "The Job That Ate My Brain," and the absolutely hilarious "Cabbies on Crack." Recently departed charter member Dee Dee Ramone also contributes a few surprisingly commercial (but still awesome) songs in "Poison Heart" and "Strength to Endure," the latter is sung by rookie C.J. "I Wont let it Happen" as an acoustic ballad in the classic Ramones mold. Although "Touring" is little more than a poor remake of "RocknRoll High School," Mondo Bizarro still marks a solid return to form for punk rocks greatest institution.

Acid Eaters : Allmusic album Review : Tearing through a bunch of psychedelic and garage rock classics from the 1960s, the Ramones regain much of the fun and abandon of earlier records, making Acid Eaters easily their best record in a decade; the guest appearances of Pete Townshend ("Substitute") and ex-porn star Traci Lords ("Somebody to Love") help make the record a blast.

¡Adios Amigos! : Allmusic album Review : The Ramones announced before the release of ¡Adios Amigos! that the record would likely be their last -- unless it sold in massive quantities, that is. While its hardly their best effort, ¡Adios Amigos! is an admirable way to bow out. The Ramones havent progressed much since the mid-80s, yet they have recaptured a bit of the inspiration that fueled their last great album, Too Tough to Die. Even with the extra kick of energy, there are moments on the album that veer too close to self-parody -- even the grungy stomp through Tom Waits "I Dont Wanna Grow Up," one of the records best moments, seems forced. Still, the weakest moments of the record outshine the best songs on the stiff and over-produced Brain Drain and Mondo Bizarro. They might not have been on the top of their game, yet the Ramones knew that a record like ¡Adios Amigos! was the right way to call it a day -- it rocks and it rolls, and its not an embarrassment.

Anthology: Hey Ho, Let’s Go! : Allmusic album Review : In a way, the Ramones are an ideal band to anthologize. No matter how cohesive their records were (or not), their albums always played like collections of singles and since singles are easy to anthologize, it stands to reason that the best of the Ramones songs will sound good in nearly any context; hell, the haphazard Ramones Mania proved that. However, Rhinos double-disc Hey! Ho! Lets Go: Ramones Anthology has much greater goals than being just another collection -- it strives to be the final word on the Ramones. Weighing in at nearly 60 songs, with a hardcover book that includes an excellent history by David Fricke, it has to be said that the set has the heft of history, which is both a blessing and a curse. Its a blessing because Anthology does its job perfectly -- apart from "Were a Happy Family," no major songs are missing and it tells its history succinctly, even at its length. The problem is that the Ramones did drop in quality sometime after End of the Century. They never bottomed out, but their music became less exciting, which is evident in this anthology, as the second disc is simply not as compelling as the first. Thats not to say it isnt good -- with "The KKK Took My Baby Away" and "My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down (Bonzo Goes to Bitburg)," it can be great -- but it isnt timeless like the entire first disc is. Yet, this is nitpicking, since Anthology does a flawless job in summarizing the bands career. True, most listeners will wear out the first disc while rarely reaching for the second, but this is still essential.

Masters of Rock : Allmusic album Review : EMIs Masters of Rock Ramones compilation features tracks culled from the legendary punk bands five albums with Chrysalis: Brain Drain, Mondo Bizarro, Acid Eaters, ¡Adios Amigos!, and Loco Live. This is late-period Ramones, so while not altogether bad (1992s Mondo Bizarro was an impressive return to form), there are far better collections out there like Hey! Ho! Lets Go: Ramones Anthology, Rhinos Greatest Hits, and Ramones Mania.

Best of the Chrysalis Years : Allmusic album Review : It probably sounds a bit cruel to call Best of the Chrysalis Years the Ramones answer to the Rolling Stones Sucking in the 70s, even though both are compilation albums which capture truly great bands at less-than-memorable points in their career. After all, the Stones had an active hand in putting together the lamentable Sucking in the 70s, while some nameless functionary at EMI Records (who released Brain Drain, Loco Live, Mondo Bizarro, Acid Eaters, and Adios Amigos in the United Kingdom) threw this odd little collection together five years after the band had ceased to exist and a year after Joey Ramone went to that great CBGB in the sky. The bands glorious earlier period is represented by eight cuts from the OK concert set Loco Live, while the other ten tunes are a sometimes-dispiriting set of latter-day studio tracks (including a large number of cover tunes and contributions from outside songwriters) which often descend into a level of bombast which doesnt honor the memory of the bands lean-and-mean classics. Significantly, two of the best cuts here are from Adios Amigos, recorded at a point when the band had already decided to call it a day -- a blazing cover of Tom Waits "I Dont Want to Grow Up" that sounds like it could have been an outtake from Road to Ruin, and the brilliantly dumb "Got a Lot to Say." If you love the Ramones, chances are you already know you dont really need an album that has "Dont Bust My Chops" and "Anxiety" instead of "Pinhead" or "Chainsaw," and if youre new to the groups legacy, any of the Ramones first four albums (or their first live disc, Its Alive) will give you a far better introduction to their earth-shattering coolness than Best of the Chrysalis Years.

The Chrysalis Years : Allmusic album Review : This box set includes the Ramones last four studio releases (Brain Drain, Acid Eaters, Mondo Bizarro, and ¡Adios Amigos!, as well as the live recording Loco Live. While longtime fans will always argue the merit of these post-heyday sessions, there are enough quality singles like "Pet Cemetery," "I Believe in Miracles," "Bonzo Goes to Bitberg," and "Chinese Rocks" to make this worth investigating. An 18-track, single-disc version called Best of the Chrysalis Years was also released.

Loud, Fast Ramones: Their Toughest Hits : Allmusic album Review : Yes, the Ramones were one of the greatest, best bands of their time, but the single-disc 2002 Rhino compilation Loud, Fast Ramones: Their Toughest Hits is not the place to become acquainted with their legacy. The problem is that its neither a concise, combustible recounting of their late-70s heyday, nor is it a good single-disc capsulation of their big tunes from "Blitzkrieg Bop" to "I Dont Wanna Grow Up," or at least "Pet Semetary." Given that this only concentrates on Sire material, its easy to forgive the absence of MCA material, but it stops somewhat inexplicably in the mid-80s -- the time that Rhinos Ramones reissue series stopped, circa October 2002, coincidentally enough -- giving this set very little rhyme or reason, especially since it tries to treat the decade or so it covers evenhandedly, which means there are a lot of great songs absent in favor of latter-day, lesser tunes. There surely are some terrific, timeless tracks here, and the first 17 or 18 tracks are stone-cold classic and flow superbly, but there are 12 other tracks that are not bad, but pale dramatically in comparison to what came before, especially because its a small sampling of a few years and doesnt attempt to be an overview of the rest of their career. There is enough great music here to make it partially worthwhile, but, on the whole, its not nearly as good as the schizophrenic but deliriously fun Ramones Mania or the comprehensive double-disc set Hey! Ho! Lets Go, which does this kind of overarching overview much better.

Greatest Hits : Allmusic album Review : Appearing one year after Rhinos Ramones box set Weird Tales of the Ramones, and appearing four years after Rhinos first single-disc Ramones collection Loud, Fast Ramones: Their Toughest Hits -- which itself appeared after Rhinos excellent double-disc Hey! Ho! Lets Go!: The Anthology -- Rhinos 2006 collection Greatest Hits serves up 20 of the groups basics. Unlike 2002s Loud, Fast Ramones, Greatest Hits makes no attempt to cover anything other than the groups peak period: the first 16 songs cover 1976s Ramones through 1980s End of the Century, with a selection apiece from Pleasant Dreams ("The KKK Took My Baby Away"), Subterranean Jungle ("Outsider"), Brain Drain ("Pet Sematary") and Too Tough to Die ("Wart Hog"). This makes for a tighter, better listen than Loud, Fast Ramones, even if its hard not to feel that Rhino might have gone to the well one too many times with this release. After all, as good as this music is, how many times can it be shuffled around on compilations? (And since the skimpy liner notes for this set are cribbed from the Weird Tales box -- there is a letter coding to illustrate each of the Ramones albums and which drummers and bassists played on what, but half of the albums with coding arent represented at all -- this cant help feel a little bit like an afterthought.) Nevertheless, anybody looking for a concise collection of the groups basics will not feel let down by this Greatest Hits, which does indeed offer 20 tracks of prime Ramones rock & roll.

Essential : Allmusic album Review : When you title a Ramones compilation Essential, youd best be figuring on including the definitive/original versions of their all-time classic tracks ("Blitzkrieg Bop," "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker," "Rockaway Beach," "Pinhead," etc.). So from that standpoint, the 2007 20-track comp, Essential, is certainly a headscratcher -- as it includes mostly the groups latter-day material, and a handful of live versions of the aforementioned classics. That said, if you already own one of the true Ramones collections that includes their essential tracks (like 1999s Hey! Ho! Lets Go: The Anthology, 2006s Greatest Hits, etc.) and are looking for a companion comp of lesser known tracks, Essential may be worth a listen. After all, it does include such standouts as "Pet Semetary" and "Merry Christmas (I Dont Want to Fight Tonight)," as well as live renditions of "Surfin Bird" and "Chinese Rocks" (the latter track being one that caused quite a bit of controversy among the band -- as explained in the must-see documentary End of the Century). While there are a few gems here, this set certainly sports one heck of a misleading title.

The Sire Years 1976–1981 : Allmusic album Review : Not many bands can honestly say they changed the shape of rock & roll as we know it and upended part of the larger global culture at the same time. The Ramones did just that; by stripping down and speeding up rock & roll like a hot rod that could outrun all competition, and injecting it with a massive dose of snotty, absurdist humor, they gave the music a new lease on life, and left behind a handful of brilliant recordings that are still a solid kick to hear nearly four decades after their debut hit the streets. Punk rock first emerged from a very specific time and place, but the best of it is timeless in its joyous roar, and the first four Ramones albums absolutely live up to that description. Those four albums -- 1976s Ramones, 1977s Leave Home, 1977s Rocket to Russia, and 1978s Road to Ruin -- are included in the box set The Sire Years 1976-1981, along with 1980s End of the Century (a conceptually brilliant but musically flawed collaboration with producer Phil Spector) and 1981s Pleasant Dreams (the first Ramones album that could have been described as blah, though it has a few great tunes, most notably "The KKK Took My Baby Away" and "7-11"). The six albums appear here in the same crisp-sounding remasters that appeared in 2001 and 2002, but have been stripped of their bonus tracks, which makes one wonder why Rhino/Warner Bros. didnt opt for a three-disc set, since the albums are short enough to fit two to a CD. And while each disc gets its own cardboard sleeve that replicates the original LP artwork, there are no liner notes or any kind of accompanying booklet that would include the credits. One can quibble about the packaging and presentation of The Sire Years, yet theres no denying the strength of this music; the first four Ramones albums are essential to any decent collection of rock & roll, and though End of the Century and Pleasant Dreams pale in comparison, they still wipe the floor with nearly all of the thousands of bands who followed the Ramones example. This isnt the ideal presentation of this music, but if your Ramones collection has mysteriously disappeared, this will catch you up on their most essential albums in one fell swoop and then some.
