Sex Pistols
Allmusic Biography : The Sex Pistols may have only been together for two years in the late 70s, but they changed the face of popular music. Through their raw, nihilistic singles and violent performances, the band revolutionized the idea of what rock & roll could be. In England, the group was considered dangerous to the very fabric of society and was banned across the country; in America, they didnt have the same impact, but countless bands in both countries were inspired by the sheer sonic force of their music, while countless others were inspired by their independent, Do-It-Yourself ethics. Even if they didnt release any singles by themselves, there was an implicit independence in the way they played their music and handled their career. The band gave birth to the massive independent music underground in England and America that would soon include bands that didnt have a direct musical connection to the Sex Pistols initial three-minute blasts of rage, but couldnt have existed without those singles.

Guitarist Steve Jones and drummer Paul Cook were regulars at a boutique owned by their manager, Malcolm McLaren; bassist Glen Matlock worked at the store. Vocalist John Lydon, who would later perform under the name Johnny Rotten, met the rest of the group at the shop and was asked to join the band. While the band played simple rock & roll loudly and abrasively, Rotten arrogantly sang of anarchy, abortion, violence, fascism, and apathy; without Rotten, the band wouldnt have been threatening to Englands government -- he provided the bands conceptual direction, calculated to be as confrontational and threatening as possible. The publicity caused by their caustic first single "Anarchy in the U.K." caused the band to be dropped by their record label, EMI. Matlock was fired before their next single "God Save the Queen," which was released on Virgin; it was banned by the BBC. Matlocks replacement was Sid Vicious, a tough street kid who, unlike the rest of the band, couldnt play his instrument.

After releasing one album, Never Mind the Bollocks Heres the Sex Pistols, in 1977, the band headed over to the U.S. for a tour in January of 1978; it lasted 14 days. Rotten left the band after their show at San Franciscos Winterland Ballroom on January 14, heading back to New York; he would form Public Image Limited later that year. McLaren tried to continue the band but Cook and Jones soon turned against him. In the two decades following the Sex Pistols implosion, an endless stream of outtakes, demos, repackagings, and live shows were released on a variety of labels, which only helped their cult grow.

In 1996, to celebrate their impending 20th anniversary, the Sex Pistols reunited, with original bassist Glen Matlock taking the place of the deceased Sid Vicious. The band embarked on an international tour in June of 1996, releasing the Filthy Lucre Live album the following month. Four years later, Julien Temple (who helmed the bands first movie, The Great Rock & Roll Swindle) directed the documentary film The Filth & the Fury. In 2016, the Sex Pistols organization signed a deal with Universal Music to handle distribution of the groups catalog outside of North America. In what may have been a belated effort to ward off the extensive bootlegging of the bands live shows and demos, Universals first Sex Pistols release was Live 1976, a four-disc box set documenting four shows the group played between June and September 1976, as recorded by their soundman Dave Goodman. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of Never Mind the Bollocks Heres the Sex Pistols, in 2017 Universal released a deluxe expanded edition of the album, with included two bonus CDs of outtakes, demos, and live material, as well as a DVD of live footage of the band. (The set had previously been released, with different packaging, as a limited-edition item in 2012.)

Spunk : Allmusic album Review : In the fall of 1977, the Sex Pistols were the most infamous rock band in the U.K., beloved by rock & roll upstarts for their stripped-down, angry sound and outlaw attitude, while they were also hated by people who disliked their open disrespect for authority, hygiene, the Royal Family, and the accepted rules of British show business. The Sex Pistols were soon to release their wildly anticipated first album, Never Mind the Bollocks Heres the Sex Pistols, when a mysterious bootleg, Spunk, appeared in hipper record shops. As it happened, Spunk collected the original demo recordings of the Sex Pistols best-known songs, as recorded by their soundman Dave Goodman and featuring original bassist Glen Matlock before he was sacked in favor of Sid Vicious. While the Pistols label, Virgin Records, quickly jumped in to halt distribution of Spunk, the bootleg soon gained a reputation as a classic punk artifact, capturing the Sex Pistols in raw but powerful form. Years after the fact, Spunk was given an authorized release (the same material also appeared on a semi-legit album titled No Future UK?), and while the album lacks the focus and clarity of Never Mind the Bollocks, without the many layers of guitar overdubs that buffered the official recordings, Spunk certainly has a certain breathless energy and spontaneity that comes closer to the impact of their explosive live shows (and given that most live Sex Pistols bootlegs from their original run sound abysmal, the rough but very listenable audio of these tracks is a welcome alternative). Never Mind the Bollocks is the definitive Sex Pistols effort, but Spunk is a more than worthy supplement, a rough draft that catches a few important virtues that were blurred in the final edit.

Never Mind the Bollocks Here’s the Sex Pistols : Allmusic album Review : While mostly accurate, dismissing Never Mind the Bollocks as merely a series of loud, ragged midtempo rockers with a harsh, grating vocalist and not much melody would be a terrible error. Already anthemic songs are rendered positively transcendent by Johnny Rottens rabid, foaming delivery. His bitterly sarcastic attacks on pretentious affectation and the very foundations of British society were all carried out in the most confrontational, impolite manner possible. Most imitators of the Pistols angry nihilism missed the point: underneath the shock tactics and theatrical negativity were social critiques carefully designed for maximum impact. Never Mind the Bollocks perfectly articulated the frustration, rage, and dissatisfaction of the British working class with the establishment, a spirit quick to translate itself to strictly rock & roll terms. The Pistols paved the way for countless other bands to make similarly rebellious statements, but arguably none were as daring or effective. Its easy to see how the bands roaring energy, overwhelmingly snotty attitude, and Rottens furious ranting sparked a musical revolution, and those qualities havent diminished one bit over time. Never Mind the Bollocks is simply one of the greatest, most inspiring rock records of all time.

Flogging a Dead Horse : Allmusic album Review : Flogging a Dead Horse collects the A- and B-sides of the Sex Pistols seven British singles. Its not really the best way to hear those singles, though -- there was a sharp decline in the quality and relevance of the Pistols material when Johnny Rotten left the band, and some of the later goofiness dilutes the impact of early songs like "God Save the Queen" and "Anarchy in the U.K." It is a useful compilation in that two songs -- "Did You No Wrong" and "No Fun" -- are unavailable on both Never Mind the Bollocks and The Great Rock & Roll Swindle, and it is perfect for fans who dont want to sift through the latter and will be content with a brief overview. Still, Dead Horse doesnt match Never Mind the Bollocks (still the necessary purchase) for start-to-finish venom, and as inconsistent as Swindle is, it can be quite entertaining. So, Flogging a Dead Horse is not the best compilation, but it will do in some cases.

After the Storm : Allmusic album Review : One band that just about every 70s-era punk act listed as an early influence was the New York Dolls. Comprised of party-hearty cross-dressers who barely knew more than a handful of power chords (and knew even less about tuning their instruments), the Dolls may not have hit it big commercially, but they spawned a legion of offspring -- including the Sex Pistols. If there were ever two bands that stylistically deserved to be together on a compilation, it would be the Dolls and the Pistols, and thats exactly what listeners get on the brief After the Storm, which features four tracks from each group. The Dolls portion consists of demos recorded in England during 1972 (with original drummer Billy Murcia behind the kit), while the Pistols section is comprised of live tracks. All the tracks have appeared on each respective bands official releases in better-sounding versions, but if its uncommon renditions youre looking for, After the Storm contains a smattering -- "Personality Crisis," "Looking for a Kiss," "Pretty Vacant," "Liar," etc. But with each band the subject of countless other comps over the years, why settle for a mere eight tracks, when there are countless other titles to choose from (and with far longer track listings)?

Better Live Than Dead : Allmusic album Review : No one seems to know exactly when or where this live disc of an energetic Glen Matlock-era Sex Pistols gig was recorded, but some have guessed it dates from the spring of 1976, and that sounds reasonable. Better Live Than Dead is certainly one of the better semi-official live Pistols albums to have emerged since the bands breakup; the recording quality is dodgy at best (and Johnny Rotten is barely audible much of the time), but the band sounds tight and enthusiastic, and when they whip through ten of their originals (along with four covers), they sound like a band rather than a cause celebre, which is when they were at their peak. However, while the performance is good enough to compensate for the sound quality, it manages this by the barest margin -- the audio suggests this was recorded on a cheap boom box, and the master tape has more than a few speed glitches. Obviously, there are plenty of folks who are willing to hear the Sex Pistols play the same songs over and over again on any number of albums, and Better Live Than Dead is a better place to hear them than most, but as with the bulk of the bands non-Virgin catalog, its hard to get past the fact youre really better off with a copy of Never Mind the Bollocks, Heres the Sex Pistols. Still, if youre an obsessive, Better Live Than Dead wont give you the feeling youve been cheated.

The Swindle Continues : Allmusic album Review : Another one of the head-scratchers when it comes to the flood of Sex Pistols semi-legal releases, The Swindle Continues attempts to be some sort of counterpart to the official Great Rock & Roll Swindle album, and only partially succeeds. Assembled once more from soundman Dave Goodmans poorly annotated archives -- indeed, theres no description anywhere as to where any of the tracks came from -- its a dogs breakfast-and-a-half of earlier demos and alternate cuts. The first half consists of Johnny Rotten-sung numbers and barring slightly stronger bass on a few songs like "Problems," and some more specific New York Dolls-naming lyrics on "New York," its not much more than alternate takes for hardcore fans. Theres one nice extra, though -- a full take on the Stooges "No Fun," which, when originally released, got cut off near the end. Here the same take runs all the way to the conclusion, an okay if not deathless bonus. The remaining songs -- credited to the Ex-Pistols -- supposedly feature various Steve Jones and Sid Vicious-sung efforts. There are a couple of honest rarities on here, admittedly, but not exactly crucial ones -- and more to the point, a number of out-and-out frauds. "Revolution in the Classroom," "Dancing on the Dole," and "Judging Minds" are all non-Pistols numbers created by Goodman years later with some friends, and can be duly ignored as the idiocy they are, vaguely catchy at best. The attempt at an acoustic cover of "Anarchy in the UK" is more successful while an alternate (and for once legitimately by the real group) take on "Silly Thing" is an okay extra. Theres a funny counterpart to the bemusing "Black Arabs" medley on Great Rock & Roll Swindle -- "Sex on 45," a cover-version attempt to stitch various Pistols songs into a disco megamix thats half successful, if not exactly any threat to Larry Levan or François Kevorkian.

Raw : Allmusic album Review : As live recordings of the Sex Pistols go, Raw is not too bad, capturing the band at an important juncture -- this soundboard recording from a gig on September 24, 1976 at the 76 Club in Burton-Upon-Trent was made only three weeks before the Pistols laid down the first studio version of "Anarchy In the U.K." The sound quality is not great, but its as good as one is likely to find on a live recording during the Pistols original go-round. A largely tuneless Johnny Rotten is his usual vitriolic self, and the band is amateurishly exciting throughout the eleven tracks. But more than anything else, what this one has to recommend it over others is the presence of original bassist Glen Matlock, who provides the glue that holds the performance together, something Sid Vicious was incapable of doing. If you want a live document of the Sex Pistols during their glory years, it will probably be difficult to top this one. Apparently in an attempt to provide a wider-ranging sample of the Pistols low-fidelity formative period (hence the title), the CD also tacks on four demos culled from the Dave Goodman studio sessions in January 1977, which are available elsewhere.

There Is No Future : Allmusic album Review : These pre-Sid Vicious live and demo cuts are mostly decent-sounding versions of songs that have all been released in more notable situations. Pleasant for the completist, but a superfluous, dead-horse flogging for those to whom the name Glen Matlock doesnt mean anything.

Pretty Vacant : Allmusic album Review : For a band that rescued rock & roll from the Uriah Heeps of the world in the late 70s, and made a mark on everything that followed, the Sex Pistols left behind precious little in terms of their recorded legacy. Their only official release being the earth-shattering NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS, enthusiasts have to turn to collections of outtakes and live material to further satisfy their Pistols jones. PRETTY VACANT is perhaps the most comprehensive of the lot, a double-disc affair that combines the previously released albums NO FUTURE UK and ORIGINAL PISTOLS LIVE.

The NO FUTURE half of this set is essentially a repackaged version of what was originally called SPUNK; a bootlegged alternate version of the Sex Pistols debut album with some different songs and mixes on it, which was released to the gray market at the same time as NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS. For a glimpse into the early live sound of the Pistols, theres the second disc, which reprises ORIGINAL PISTOLS LIVE, offering an illuminating view of the punk pioneers in a very early stage of their development.

Sex Pistols Box Set : Allmusic album Review : The problem is the legacy. Boiled down to its essentials, its not even one album -- its a series of singles, buttressed by a handful of songs scattered among the lone album, singles and demos. Its enough to help support the legend, or at least keep the myth alive, but as music, it can sound bloated and tedious, hardly sounding like the epochal music it allegedly is. Thats largely because the Sex Pistols were only partially about music. Sure, Johnny Rottens snarl and the bludgeoning chords (despite their reputation, the Pistols never really played fast, it occasionally sounded that way) counted for something, but so did the attitude, the appearance, and the timing. Appearing at the silver jubilee of the Queen, the Sex Pistols pissed all over that celebration with their scabrous "God Save The Queen," causing something truly dangerous, if only for a minute. A moment later, Johnny Rotten left the band, manager Malcolm McLaren brought in former train robber Ronnie Biggs for a series of awful singles, Sid Vicious allegedly killed his girlfriend and then offed himself, and the Sex Pistols story ended, only to be turned into farce and vaudeville through countless bios, bad stories, bad reissues, tacky T-shirts, and an ill-advised reunion or two, the second of which happened in 2002, on the Golden Jubilee. To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Pistols and, of course, 50 years of the Queen, a new round of reissues was hauled out, with the three-disc The Box Set being the figurative crown jewel, and the single-disc Jubilee being the hits collection. Theoretically, both are good ideas -- a box containing everything, a disc containing the essentials -- yet theyre both executed poorly. The box is problematic because it looks like what it purports to be: a complete collection of the studio recordings of the prime band, along with demos, including the Spunk demos, plus a full disc of live material, including "Live at Screen on the Green" in 1976 and the notorious "Belsen Was a Gas," from Dallas in 1978. All this, combined with a booklet with track-by-track annotation, discography, and gig history, makes this seem like it is an ideal box set, but look closer. Youll find that theres a great deal of material missing, including several Spunk demos, plus lots of other demos, outtakes, and early material that have appeared elsewhere, but not here. Its a selected history, not a set of complete recordings, and its rather awkwardly sequenced, too, stumbling along instead flowing easily. Its not even a question of whether a band that only released one album could be subjected to a full box set treatment, because they could if it were presented with care and with a desire to fulfill the wishes of completists. This has the skeleton of that set, but not the heart, so it winds up feeling nearly as ill-considered as its companion cash-in, Jubilee, and, given that it is closer to what it promised, its a bigger disappointment.
