Roxy Music
Allmusic Biography : Evolving from the late-60s art-rock movement, Roxy Music had a fascination with fashion, glamour, cinema, pop art, and the avant-garde, which separated the band from their contemporaries. Dressed in bizarre, stylish costumes, the group played a defiantly experimental variation of art rock which vacillated between avant-rock and sleek pop hooks. During the early 70s, the group was driven by the creative tension between Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno, who each pulled the band in separate directions: Ferry had a fondness for American soul and Beatlesque art-pop, while Eno was intrigued by deconstructing rock with amateurish experimentalism inspired by the Velvet Underground. This incarnation of Roxy Music may have only recorded two albums, but it inspired a legion of imitators -- not only the glam-rockers of the early 70s, but art-rockers and new wave pop groups of the late 70s. Following Enos departure, Roxy Music continued with its arty inclinations for a few albums before gradually working in elements of disco and soul. Within a few years, the group had developed a sophisticated, seductive soul-pop that relied on Ferrys stylish crooning. By the early 80s, the group had developed into a vehicle for Ferry, so it was no surprise that he disbanded the group at the height of its commercial success in the early 80s to pursue a solo career.

The son of a coal miner, Bryan Ferry (vocals, keyboards) had studied art with Richard Hamilton at the University of Newcastle before forming Roxy Music in 1971. While at university, he sang in rock bands, joining the R&B; group the Gas Board, which also featured bassist Graham Simpson. Ferry and Simpson decided to form their own band toward the end of 1970, eventually recruiting Andy Mackay (saxophone), who had previously played oboe with the London Symphony Orchestra. Through Mackay, Brian Eno joined the band. By the summer of 1971, the group -- had originally been called "Roxy" but a name change was necessary after the discovery of an American band called Roxy -- had recruited classical percussionist Dexter Lloyd and guitarist Roger Bunn through an ad in Melody Maker; both musicians left within a month, but they did record the groups initial demos. Another ad was placed in Melody Maker, and this time the group landed drummer Paul Thompson and guitarist Davy OList, who had previously played with the Nice. OList left by the beginning of 1972 and was replaced by Phil Manzanera, a former member of Quiet Sun. Prior to recording their first album, Simpson left the band. Roxy Music never replaced him permanently; instead, they hired new bassists for each record and tour, beginning with Rik Kenton, who appeared on their eponymous debut for Island Records.

Produced by Peter Sinfield of King Crimson, Roxys self-titled debut climbed into the British Top Ten in the summer of 1972; shortly afterward, the non-LP single "Virginia Plain" rocketed into the British Top Ten, followed by the non-LP "Pyjamarama" in early 1973. While Roxy Music had become a sensation in England and Europe due to their clever amalgamation of high and kitsch culture, they had trouble getting a foothold in the United States. Both the first album and the follow-up, 1973s For Your Pleasure (recorded with bassist John Porter), were greeted with enthusiasm in the U.K., but virtually ignored in the U.S. Frustrated with Ferrys refusal to record his compositions, Eno left the band after the completion of For Your Pleasure. Before recording the third Roxy Music album, Ferry released a solo album, These Foolish Things, which was comprised of pop/rock covers.

Released in December of 1973, Stranded became the bands first number one album in the U.K. Stranded was recorded with new Roxy member Eddie Jobson, a multi-instrumentalist who previously played with Curved Air; it was also the first record to feature writing credits for Manzanera and Mackay. The album received a warmer reception in the U.S. than its two predecessors, setting the stage for the breakthrough of Country Life in late 1974. Sporting a controversial cover of two models dressed in see-through lingerie -- the cover was banned in several stores, and it was eventually replaced with a photo of a forest in the U.S. -- Country Life was the first Roxy album to break the U.S. Top 40 and became their fourth British Top Ten album. Following a tour with bassist John Wetton, the group recorded Siren. Featuring their first American Top 40 hit, the disco-flavored "Love Is the Drug," Siren was another British Top Ten hit; in the U.S., it was moderate hit, peaking at number 50. Following the tour for Siren, the band members began working on solo projects -- Manzanera formed the prog-rock group 801, and Mackay and Ferry both began recording solo albums -- and announced in the summer of 1976 that they were temporarily breaking up. The live album Viva Roxy Music! was released shortly after the announcement of the groups hiatus.

Roxy Music regrouped in the fall of 1978 after spending 18 months on solo projects. Ferry, Manzanera, Mackay and Thompson added former Ace keyboardist Paul Carrack to the bands lineup and hired Gary Tibbs, formerly of the Vibrators, and ex-Kokomo Alan Spenner as studio bassists; Jobson and Wetton, who were not asked to rejoin the band, formed UK. Roxy Musics comeback effort, Manifesto, was released in the spring of 1979, and it boasted a sleek, disco-influenced soul-pop sound that was markedly different from and more accessible than their earlier records. Manifesto confirmed their British popularity, reaching the Top Ten, and became their highest-charting U.S. record, peaking at number 23 on the strength of the single "Dance Away." Roxy Music supported the album with an international tour that featured Carrack and Tibbs; prior to the tours start, Thompson left the band after breaking his thumb in a motorcycle accident. Flesh + Blood, the follow-up to Manifesto, was recorded just by Ferry, Manzanera and Mackay, and a host of studio musicians. Released in the summer of 1980, Flesh + Blood became Roxys second British number one album on the strength of the Top Ten single "Over You"; in America, the album reached the American Top 40. In the spring of 1981, the bands non-LP cover of John Lennons "Jealous Guy," recorded as a tribute to the slain singer, became the groups only British number one single.

Nearly two years later, Roxy Music returned in the summer of 1982 with Avalon. Marking a new level in the groups production and musical sophistication, Avalon became their biggest album, spending three weeks at the top of the British charts and 27 on the U.S. charts, generating the British hits "More Than This" and "Take a Chance With Me." It became the groups only American gold album, and over the years, it worked its way to platinum status. Following a successful supporting tour for Avalon, the group released the live EP Musique/The High Road in the spring of 1983. The Avalon tour turned out to be Roxy Musics final activity as a group. Ferry began to concentrate on his solo career, beginning with 1985s Boys and Girls. Manzanera and Mackay formed a band called the Explorers in 1985; the pair would record under a variety of guises, as well as pursue solo careers, over the next 15 years. The compilation Street Life: 20 Great Hits, which also featured Ferrys solo hits, was released in 1989. A year later, Heart Still Beating, a live album documenting a 1982 concert, was released.

Roxy Music : Allmusic album Review : Falling halfway between musical primitivism and art rock ambition, Roxy Musics eponymous debut remains a startling redefinition of rocks boundaries. Simultaneously embracing kitschy glamour and avant-pop, Roxy Music shimmers with seductive style and pulsates with disturbing synthetic textures. Although no musician demonstrates much technical skill at this point, they are driven by boundless imagination -- Brian Enos synthesized "treatments" exploit electronic instruments as electronics, instead of trying to shoehorn them into conventional acoustic patterns. Similarly, Bryan Ferry finds that his vampiric croon is at its most effective when it twists conventional melodies, Phil Manzaneras guitar is terse and unpredictable, while Andy Mackays saxophone subverts rock & roll clichés by alternating R&B honking with atonal flourishes. But what makes Roxy Music such a confident, astonishing debut is how these primitive avant-garde tendencies are married to full-fledged songs, whether its the free-form, structure-bending "Re-Make/Re-Model" or the sleek glam of "Virginia Plain," the debut single added to later editions of the album. That was the trick that elevated Roxy Music from an art school project to the most adventurous rock band of the early 70s.

For Your Pleasure : Allmusic album Review : On Roxy Musics debut, the tensions between Brian Eno and Bryan Ferry propelled their music to great, unexpected heights, and for most of the groups second album, For Your Pleasure, the band equals, if not surpasses, those expectations. However, there are a handful of moments where those tensions become unbearable, as when Eno wants to move toward texture and Ferry wants to stay in more conventional rock territory; the nine-minute "The Bogus Man" captures such creative tensions perfectly, and its easy to see why Eno left the group after the album was completed. Still, those differences result in yet another extraordinary record from Roxy Music, one that demonstrates even more clearly than the debut how avant-garde ideas can flourish in a pop setting. This is especially evident in the driving singles "Do the Strand" and "Editions of You," which pulsate with raw energy and jarring melodic structures. Roxy also illuminate the slower numbers, such as the eerie "In Every Dream Home a Heartache," with atonal, shimmering synthesizers, textures that were unexpected and innovative at the time of its release. Similarly, all of For Your Pleasure walks the tightrope between the experimental and the accessible, creating a new vocabulary for rock bands, and one that was exploited heavily in the ensuing decade.

Stranded : Allmusic album Review : Without Brian Eno, Roxy Music immediately became less experimental, yet they remained adventurous, as Stranded illustrates. Under the direction of Bryan Ferry, Roxy moved toward relatively straightforward territory, adding greater layers of piano and heavy guitars. Even without the washes of Enos synthesizers, Roxys music remains unsettling on occasion, yet in this new incarnation, they favor more measured material, whether its the reflective "A Song for Europe" or the shifting textures of "Psalm." Even the rockers, such as the surging "Street Life" and the segmented "Mother of Pearl," are distinguished by subtle songwriting that emphasizes both Ferrys tortured glamour and Roxys increasingly impressive grasp of sonic detail.

Country Life : Allmusic album Review : Continuing with the stylistic developments of Stranded, Country Life finds Roxy Music at the peak of their powers, alternating between majestic, unsettling art rock and glamorous, elegant pop/rock. At their best, Roxy combine these two extremes, like on the exhilarating opener "The Thrill of It All," but Country Life benefits considerably from the ebb and flow of the groups two extremes, since it showcases their deft instrumental execution and their textured, enthralling songwriting. And, in many ways, Country Life offers the greatest and most consistent set of Roxy Music songs, illustrating their startling depth. From the sleek rock of "All I Want Is You" and "Prairie Rose" to the elegant, string-laced pop of "A Really Good Time," Country Life is filled with thrilling songs, and Roxy Music rarely sounded as invigorating as they do here.

Siren : Allmusic album Review : Abandoning the intoxicating blend of art rock and glam-pop that distinguished Stranded and Country Life, Roxy Music concentrate on Bryan Ferrys suave, charming crooner persona for the elegantly modern Siren. As the disco-fied opener "Love Is the Drug" makes clear, Roxy embrace dance and unabashed pop on Siren, weaving them into their sleek, arty sound. It does come at the expense of their artier inclinations, which is part of what distinguished Roxy, but the end result is captivating. Lacking the consistently amazing songs of its predecessor, Siren has a thematic consistency that works in its favor, and helps elevate its best songs -- "Sentimental Fool," "Both Ends Burning," "Just Another High" -- as well as the album itself into the realm of classics.

Greatest Hits : Allmusic album Review : The first Roxy Music hits collection, released during the hiatus that divided Siren from Manifesto, was a straightforward rendering of all but one ("Both Ends Burning") of the bands UK hits, buoyed by an intelligent selection of key album tracks - US radio fave "Do The Strand", the pulsating "Editions Of You" and so on.

Divided neatly between the Eno and Eddie Jobson eras of the band, Greatest Hits was most valuable at the time for finally placing "Virginia Plain" and "Pyjamarama" on a British album release (the former was included on the American edition of the bands debut) - hopes that the set might also find room for the string of non-album b-sides that graced the bands 45s were, however, dashed as Greatest Hits went for the commercial, rather than the collectible jugular.

Still, its a nice introduction for those who needed one, a smart souvenir for everyone else, and a vivid reminder that, for five years through the early-mid 1970s, Roxy really did release some phenomenal 45s.

Manifesto : Allmusic album Review : Returning to action after four years of solo projects, Roxy Music redefined its sound and agenda on Manifesto. More than ever, Roxy sounds like Bryan Ferrys backing band, as the group strips away its art rock influences, edits out the instrumental interludes in favor of concise pop songs, and adds layers of stylish disco rhythms. Although the songwriting is distressingly inconsistent, there are a number of wonderful moments on the record, particularly in the sighing "Angel Eyes" and the heartbroken "Dance Away." Still, trading sonic adventure for lush, accessible disco-pop isnt entirely satisfactory, even if it is momentarily seductive.

Flesh + Blood : Allmusic album Review : An even slicker record than Manifesto, Flesh + Blood precariously balances between alluringly seductive, sophisticated soul-pop and cloying, radio-ready disco-pop. At its best, the album is effortlessly suave and charming -- "Over You" is one of their greatest singles, and "Oh Yeah" is nearly as persuasive -- but much of the record is devoted to ill-formed, stylish lounge-pop. In particular, the reliance on reworked covers of "In the Midnight Hour" and "Eight Miles High" is distressing, not only because it signals a lack of imagination, but also because it suggests that Flesh + Blood is simply a lesser solo effort from Bryan Ferry. And even the handful of undeniably strong moments cant erase the feeling that Roxy Music were beginning to run out of ideas.

Avalon : Allmusic album Review : Flesh + Blood suggested that Roxy Music were at the end of the line, but they regrouped and recorded the lovely Avalon, one of their finest albums. Certainly, the lush, elegant soundscapes of Avalon are far removed from the edgy avant-pop of their early records, yet it represents another landmark in their career. With its stylish, romantic washes of synthesizers and Bryan Ferrys elegant, seductive croon, Avalon simultaneously functioned as sophisticated make-out music for yuppies and as the maturation of synth pop. Ferry was never this romantic or seductive, either with Roxy or as a solo artist, and Avalon shimmers with elegance in both its music and its lyrics. "More Than This," "Take a Chance with Me," "While My Heart Is Still Beating," and the title track are immaculately crafted and subtle songs, where the shifting synthesizers and murmured vocals gradually reveal the melodies. Its a rich, textured album and a graceful way to end the bands career.

The Atlantic Years 1973–1980 : Allmusic album Review : Mourning Roxy Musics departure to Warner Brothers for their final album, Avalon, The Atlantic Years is a very top-heavy compilation concentrating on the bands final last albums for Atco, then tracking back to radio faves "Do the Strand" and "Love Is the Drug" to justify its title. As such, it was placed perfectly to wrap up any wallflowers whod fallen for the slick uber-disco stylings of the groups recent singles, not only reiterating the biggest hits ("Dance Away," "Angel Eyes," "Over You"), but also rounding up some deserving album tracks as well -- the calming sophistication of "Aint That So" and "Still Falls the Rain," the exquisite rendering of "In the Midnight Hour" and so forth. In the larger scheme of things, The Atlantic Years offers nothing that so many other compilations cannot compete with, but anybody looking for a bite-sized souvenir of Manifesto and Flesh + Blood will not find much to complain about.

Street Life: 20 Great Hits : Allmusic album Review : The first compilation to attempt an all-encompassing overview of Bryan Ferry and Roxy Musics career, Street Life was originally released in 1986, four years on from the bands break-up. And, across four sides of vinyl, it represented one of the most lovingly compiled tombstones any band could receive. Subsequent compilations have, of course, undermined it a little, but still its difficult to criticize a collection that wraps up every significant hit single that the two parties enjoyed, from "Virginia Plain" and the oft-overlooked "Pyjamarama" through to "Jealous Guy" and "Avalon," via "A Hard Rains A-Gonna Fall" and "Slave to Love." The packaging is distinctive, with tempting stills from long-ago TV appearances mingling with all the relevant LP sleeves, and if you should ever be looking for a one-stop reminder of the combos unerring brilliance, this is it.

Heart Still Beating : Allmusic album Review : Recorded live in France in 1982 but not released on CD in the U.S. until 1990, Heart Still Beating isnt quite in a class with Roxy Musics first live album, Viva, but nonetheless gives us a lot to be excited about. Lead singer Bryan Ferry and guitarist Phil Manzanera sound quite inspired much of the time, and Manzanera delivers some excellent solos. Longtime Roxy devotees will want to savor engaging versions of "Out of the Blue" and "Both Ends Burning" (both of which were heard on Viva), as well as such favorites as "Dance Away," "Avalon" and the clever "Love Is the Drug." Roxy comes closer to a mainstream rock sound on enjoyable interpretations of Neil Youngs "Like a Hurricane" and John Lennons "Jealous Guy," but even then, the distinctive bands quirky art-rock tendencies remain.

The Thrill of It All : Allmusic album Review : Album-rock artists like Roxy Music always make a difficult subject for comprehensive, multi-disc box sets. Frequently, their albums were designed as a cohesive whole and the idea of individual singles never really entered the picture at all. Roxy Music was slightly different than the average art/prog-rock band -- not only did they make albums, they also made singles. And that is one of the reasons why the four-disc set The Thrill of It All is successful. Roxys songs stand as individual works, and they make sense outside of their original context, even if they make more sense within their original context. Thankfully, the majority of each of their major albums are reproduced on the first three discs of this collection, leaving the fourth disc for non-LP singles, remixes, and B-sides. Most of this material has not been available on CD before, making The Thrill of it All essential for collectors. Nevertheless, its a helpful guide to Roxys career for casual fans -- it contains all of the essential songs and shows why the group was one of the seminal bands of the 70s.

The Best of Roxy Music : Allmusic album Review : Released to herald a reunion of the band and superseding several out-of-print predecessors, The Best of Roxy Music is an excellent summary of the groups hits and album highlights between 1972 and 1982. There are really two editions of Roxy Music, the glam rock unit that achieved widespread U.K. success from 1972 to 1975, and the more polished one that was a broader international success from 1979 to 1982. The compilers have dealt with the dichotomy and the more lasting popularity of the later recordings by presenting the compilation in reverse chronological order, so that soft rock hits like "Over You" and "Dance Away," which scored in America, come before U.K.-only hits like "Street Life" and "Virginia Plain," which rock much harder. But all the major hits are here (only a couple of less-successful British singles chart entries are missing), augmented by memorable album tracks like "Do the Strand" and "Mother of Pearl." In print or not, this is the best single-disc collection of Roxy Music, since it is more complete than earlier compilations like the 1977 Greatest Hits and 1983 The Atlantic Years (1973-1980) LPs, and, unlike later best-ofs such as Street Life: 20 Great Hits (1986), The Ultimate Collection (1988), and More Than This: The Best of Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music (1995) (the latter two U.K. releases), it is not divided between Bryan Ferry solo tracks and Roxy Music ones.

Reflection : Allmusic album Review : Roxy Music is well represented when it comes to live releases. Viva! is an excellent souvenir of the bands 1975 tour, Heart Still Beating documents the brilliant 1980 Avalon tour, while Concertodoes an excellent job providing an overview of the 1979 Manifesto "reunion" tour. Fans should own all of the previously listed CDs. For this two-CD package, NMC has repackaged two Roxy releases, Valentine and Vintage. The music was recorded between 1972 and 1975 for the German television shows Musikladen and Beat Club. The package also contains the video for the songs from the shows. Overall, it is a good package. The recording quality is a bit muddy but, considering its origin (mid-70s television), it is pretty good. For some reason, "A Hard Rains Gonna Fall" begins in the middle but, other than that, the performances are complete. Because of the span of years, different lineups of the band are represented, which allows for some small comparisons between Roxy Music with and without Eno. Fans will enjoy this package; others may want to stick with the original releases.

Live : Allmusic album Review : After 18 years off, everyone knew that Roxy Musics 2001 reunion tour was going to be an event, and by all accounts, it was. But once the thrill of it all wore off, did the band still have anything to say musically? The answer is a resounding yes. Eagle Records release of the double-CD Live features tracks recorded all over the world, creating a virtual dream concert made from the best-recorded, best-played songs of the 2001 tour. Unfettered by the need to promote an album, Roxy was free to survey their entire career, and it would be hard to come up with a better set list (OK, "Pyjamarama" should have been included). The expanded lineup enables the band to effortlessly re-create everything from Eddie Jobsons violin solos to Enos treatments and textures, and while the arrangements stick pretty much to the original script, the band really digs into the tunes, and Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay have never sounded better as soloists. In fact, Manzanera is consistently dazzling every time he steps to the fore, sounding every bit as ferocious and unearthly as he did on their first few albums. Having Paul Thompson back behind the drumkit was vital for the early material, but also adds some needed power to tunes like "My Only Love". Bryan Ferrys voice has weathered just a bit, but hes still the epitome of crooner cool.

The sound quality, as expected, is excellent, allowing the listener to hear every musical detail the band offers. Audience participation, the bane of many a live album, is largely held in check until the very end of the set when it intrudes slightly on the encore numbers. But this is a very small quibble about a thoroughly wonderful release. This set should impress those unfamiliar with Roxy and will surely thrill longtime fans. Its a fine testament to this band that these songs sound timeless rather than dated nearly 30 years down the line in many cases. After nearly two decades away, Roxy Music prove that they still have plenty of style and plenty of substance. Recommended.

The Platinum Collection : Allmusic album Review : Along with Queen, Roxy Music started life as a glam band with a heavy prog rock edge before embarking on a long and successful career that saw a variety of musical styles touched upon. And while quite a few single-disc Roxy Music compilations have been released over the years (the best probably being the 1986 collection, Street Life: 20 Greatest Hits), most die-hard Roxy fans would argue that there were far too many highlights that fell through the cracks due to the limitation of a single disc. Hence, the 2004, triple-disc set The Platinum Collection. In conjunction with his Roxy work, singer Bryan Ferry also issued solo albums (which were quite stylistically similar to one another), and both are included in hefty portions here. Although never the superstars in the U.S. that they were in the U.K., Roxy Music and Ferry certainly had the tunes -- the early classics "Virginia Plain," "Do the Strand," and "Love Is the Drug" -- while latter day tracks as "More Than This," "Avalon," and a cover of John Lennons "Jealous Guy" (the latter of which was a U.K. chart-topper) showed the group eventually mature into a more mainstream band. The Platinum Collection bridges the gap between the countless single-disc Roxy compilations, and the exhaustive Thrill of It All box set.

Essential : Allmusic album Review : In the nomenclature of music compilations, the word "essential" (as opposed to "best of" or "greatest hits") has come to connote an album in which some degree of editorial judgment has been exercised, such that key album tracks may be substituted for hit singles here and there in the name of presenting an artists strengths and not just the most popular recordings. So it is with this selection of the "essential" works of Roxy Music (a band that has had its share of best-ofs and greatest-hits albums), as represented by a 16-track, 67-and-a-half-minute disc. The groups ten-year existence may be divided into its early years (1972-1976) and its later ones (1979-1982), with the first part containing somewhat more experimental and harder rocking music, and the second part featuring smoother-sounding dance-pop. The compiler here seems to prefer the first half, such that an LP track like the six-and-a-half-minute "If There Is Something," for example, trumps later U.K. Top Five singles such as "Over You" and "More Than This," which are missing. Roxy Musics sole British chart-topper, a cover of John Lennons "Jealous Guy," meanwhile, is represented by a live recording. Most of the bands big hits are featured, but the album is best recommended to the neophyte who wants to get an overall sense of what Roxy Music were all about, not a fan who wants the groups most popular tracks on a single CD.

The Complete Studio Recordings : Allmusic album Review : Roxy Music have been remastered and boxed before but theres a simple elegance to The Complete Studio Recordings that suits the band. Containing nothing more than handsome remastered mini-LP reissues of the bands eight albums along with two discs of non-LP singles -- including "Virginia Plain," two mixes of "Pyjamarama," as well as several edits and mixes making their CD debut -- the 2012 box set lacks such expected frills as liner notes, an absence that is noted but not greatly missed, as the execution on this set is expert. Presentation was always key to Roxy Music, and The Complete Studio Recordings is frankly gorgeous, its mini-LPs housed in heavy cardboard sleeves, the outer box black and sleek, conveying the well-tailored sophistication of the band while placing emphasis directly on the music. Nicely remastered -- perhaps not a great revelation compared to the 1999 discs but warm, rich, and full, better overall -- the music is familiar yet fresh, still kinetic with imagination after all these years. Roxys catalog roughly breaks down into pairs with two outliers: the early Eno-graced Roxy Music and For Your Pleasure, their artiest and strangest LPs; the muscular glam of Stranded and Country Life; the cool European disco of Manifesto and Flesh + Blood. There is also the 1975 transitional masterpiece Siren -- the bridge between art rock and art pop -- and the reserved swan song Avalon. The bonus material is unequally balanced, with the entirety of the second disc devoted to the early 80s and about a third of the first covering the Manifesto era, but its all welcome, particularly the odd mixes and the essential early singles. Ultimately, the box itself is essential: Roxy Music are one of the rare rock bands with such an exquisitely carved catalog, and it shines in this setting.
