The Psychedelic Furs | ||
Allmusic Biography : The Psychedelic Furs, whose name was inspired by the 1966 Velvet Underground song "Venus in Furs," were formed in England in 1977 by brothers Richard Butler (vocals) and Tim Butler (bass), along with saxophone player Duncan Kilburn and guitarist Roger Morris. By the time they released their self-titled debut album in 1980, the group had become a sextet, adding guitarist John Ashton and drummer Vince Ely. That album, featuring Butlers hoarse voice (the tone of which suggested John Lydon without the sneer) was a bigger hit in England, where it reached the Top 20, than in the U.S. Talk Talk Talk (1981) did better, reaching the U.S. Top 100 and producing two British singles chart entries, one of which was "Pretty in Pink," later also a hit in the U.S. when a new version was used as the title song of a film. Forever Now (1982) saw the band reduced to a quartet with the departure of Kilburn and Morris. The rest moved to the U.S., turned to producer Todd Rundgren, and scored a U.S. Top 50 hit with "Love My Way." Ely then left, and the remaining trio of the two Butlers and Ashton made Mirror Moves (1984), the biggest Psychedelic Furs hit yet. The film Pretty in Pink helped spread their name further before the release of their next album, Midnight to Midnight (1987), which consequently got to number 12 in the U.K. and the Top 30 in the U.S. and included the Top 30 U.S. hit "Heartbreak Beat." Book of Days (1989) marked the return of Vince Ely, but was a considerable commercial disappointment. World Outside (1991) also failed to find an audience. The Psychedelic Furs then folded up shop, and Richard Butler launched a new group, Love Spit Love. The band lasted two albums -- 1994s Love Spit Love and 1997s Trysome Eatone -- and didnt enjoy the monumental success of Butlers original band. Butler kept on. He began writing songs for a supposed solo effort as the 90s came to a close. Those sessions led to new songs with brother Tim and a subsequent Furs reunion in early 2000. With both Butlers and John Ashton living in upstate New York, the time was right. They tested the waters and their audience for a joint summer tour with the Go-Gos, and the reception was warm. A year later, the Psychedelic Furs -- now featuring Love Spit Love guitarist Richard Fortus and drummer Earl Harvin -- headlined their own club gigs across North America and a classic Richard Butler was keen to be back in the right place. Beautiful Chaos, a live album capturing some of the bands greatest hits from the last tour, was issued in November 2001. Their first live album ever, Beautiful Chaos was a gift for the loyalists. It also introduced their first new song in almost ten years, a somber ballad entitled "Alive."

The Psychedelic Furs : Allmusic album Review : Emerging from the incipient post-punk London scene with a healthy fascination for late-70s Bowie (and in turn, for his own attraction to Krautrock), the then-sextet kicked up a slightly monochromatic but still attractive storm on their debut. Richard Butlers Thin-White-Duke-after-smoking vocal rasp has a surprising appeal, serving up a wry, slightly detached series of lyrics on life. The members of the core band, meanwhile, had clearly honed their chops well on-stage; Ashtons lead guitar work avoids both wankery and simplicity in favor of a balanced, artistic power. Production mainly comes from Steve Lillywhite, who smartly steers away from the soon-to-be-clichéd touches he would bring to U2s early work. "India" is a good example; it has a brooding, quiet beginning with strange telegraphic signals and turns into a brawling rocker without sounding like the Edge or Larry Mullins going off. The record comes off as serious without being self-consciously deep, occasional toe-dipping into humorous aside ("We Love You" has Butler idly listing off things he loves, sometimes with appropriate if sarcastically delivered song quotes: "Im in love with Frank Sinatra...fly me to the moon..."). "Imitation of Christ" is the most frazzled, with lyrics detailing someone else metaphorically nailing himself up over a light but still strange guitar line. "Wedding Song" is amusingly prescient as one of the first "white rockers go hip-hop" numbers of its kind, along with Blondies "Rapture," though its inspiration could equally be dub. Ely lays down a pounding funk beat while Butler breaks into a midsong rap no better or worse than most such efforts of the time.

Talk Talk Talk : Allmusic album Review : This time working solely with Steve Lillywhite, the Furs introduce a brighter, poppier side to their underground rock edge, with smashing results throughout. The group produces some powerful songs, even more rough-edged than before. Especially striking is "Dumb Waiters," with its queasy, slow-paced arrangement that allows both Kilburns sax and Ashtons guitar to go wild. However, the six still create some undeniable pop classics. Most well-known is the lead track, "Pretty in Pink," inspiration for the iconic John Hughes film years later and re-recorded as a result. The original is still where to go, though, with Butlers catchy description of a romantically unsure woman matched by a killer band performance. Similarly lighter numbers on the record call to mind a rockier version of Roxy Musics output in later years: elegant, romantic angst given a slightly rougher edge in both music and vocals. "She Is Mine" is especially fine as a gently swinging number with some of Butlers best, quietly ruminative lyrics. Straight-up anthems abound as well, the best being the amazing "Into You Like a Train," which mixes the blunt desire of the title with a sparkling Ashton guitar line and a fast rhythm punch. Talk Talk Talk ends on another high with "All of This and Nothing." A soft, acoustic guitar-sax-rhythm combination introduces the song, then fades away for the main section to begin; Butler details bits and pieces from a lost relationship over a sharp full-band performance, and a final drum smash leads into a reprise of the start -- a fine way to end a fine record.

Forever Now : Allmusic album Review : Likely exercising the same controlling approach that he was notorious for, from his work with every act from the New York Dolls to XTC, Todd Rundgren brought in legendary backup vocal duo Flo & Eddie as well as a cellist, two horn players (including NRBQ member Donn Adams), and himself on keyboards. The end result is simply fantastic, fusing the post-punk charge of the first two albums (Ely still sounds great as always, from the first song on, while Tim Butler acquits himself well on bass) with a new synth-based approach that works wonders. Ashtons guitar often settles back in the mix a bit to allow Rundgrens wall of sound to come together fully, often with great success. The title track is a great example of this, an inspirational anthem where Ashton fully and appropriately lets go right at the end. The most well-known song is one that, for the Furs, was their most atypical single to date: "Love My Way." Butlers very Bowie-like vocals and lyrics slyly celebrate and ponder the triumphant synth rock scene of the time, while Rundgrens often quirky keyboards take the lead in place of Ashtons guitar and Flo & Eddie wordlessly vocalize at the end. "Goodbye" has a brisk, horn-driven punch underscoring Butlers wickedly sour au revoir to a past love; "Sleep Comes Down" mixes Tim Butlers lovely bassline and Rundgrens piano; "President Gas" wryly takes a shot at Reagan while avoiding obvious platitudes; and "Yes I Do" ends on an almost sweetly romantic note, even as the cello/drum-driven arrangement surges along.

Mirror Moves : Allmusic album Review : Having made tentative inroads toward a wider American audience with Forever Now, the Psychedelic Furs profile-raising and partial transformation continued with Mirror Moves. Very much a product of its mid-80s time -- Keith Forsey produced, his drum machine providing the beats while synths played an even more prominent role than before -- it may not be the classic sound of the band but it is an often rewarding and inspiring listen. It didnt hurt that some of the bands best songs made an appearance here, either. Both "The Ghost in You" and "Heaven" balanced off a warm sound that managed to be radio-friendly on the one hand -- John Ashtons guitar mixed in surprisingly well with the fine if often conventional keyboard arrangements -- and surprisingly barbed on the other. Richard Butlers lyrics were some of his slyest and sharpest, a tone maintained throughout the album, while his one of a kind speak/sing clipped rasp kept things from being too lost even at the albums least inspired. Unlike the following Midnight to Midnight album, however -- where everything the Furs had going for them turned into a screeching halt -- Mirror Moves holds up fairly consistently. "Here Come Cowboys," with its combination guitar/string chug (or so it sounds!) and a brilliant slow descending chorus, and the driving, nervous piano and massed vocals on "Alices House" are two particular winners. The secret highlight of the album is also its closer -- "Highwire Days," as brilliant a meditation on 80s-era political paranoia and fears as was done at the time. Butlers imagery is to the point without moralizing or dumbing down, while the tense arrangement suggests a more synth-based equivalent to the Chameleons, at once scaled for epic heights and almost uncomfortably close.

Midnight to Midnight : Allmusic album Review : Midnight to Midnight continues the streamlining of The Psychedelic Furs. Unlike the previous Mirror Moves, Midnight to Midnight loses the essential character of The Furs sound, as the production relies on a sleek, stylish pop production. Although the results dont have much to do with the groups early records, its an entertaining record, filled with its share of pop thrills, including the single "Heartbreak Beat."

All of This and Nothing : Allmusic album Review : The Psychedelic Furs acquired a million or so more fans in 1986 after they re-recorded their early 80s classic "Pretty in Pink" for the John Hughes box-office smash of the same name. The Top-40 success of "Heartbreak Beat" a year later took the once enigmatic new wave band further into the mainstream. 1988s All of This and Nothing is basically a tutorial for late Furs converts. The groups original followers probably have most of the lyrics memorized, but the album is an accessible and enlightening introduction to the band. "Imitation of Christ" and "Sister Europe" are from the groups self-titled 1980 debut, and their dark, ragged edges offer a glimpse of the bands less commercial younger days. On the gorgeous "Love My Way" the Furs have more of a pop flavor, giving hints at the groups subsequent transformation. It was on 1984s Mirror Moves that the Psychedelic Furs completely softened their abrasiveness and began writing warm, keyboard-laden songs. Accused of selling out at the time by diehard aficionados, the Psychedelic Furs actually improved on Mirror Moves; their music became more pleasing to the ear, as exemplified on the hauntingly beautiful ballad "The Ghost in You" and the soaring "Heaven". Richard Butlers voice remained as raspy as ever, but it took on a more romantic tone that was very appealing. 1987s ultra slick Midnight to Midnight is represented here by the aforementioned "Heartbreak Beat". "Heartbreak Beat" has silly, clichéd lyrics (i.e. "Theres a heartbreak beat/And it feels like love"; nevertheless, its nonsense hooks are deliriously catchy. With ts swirling guitars and sarcastic lyrics, "All That Money Wants" was seen as a return to the Furs of old when it was included as a new track on All of This and Nothing. Its not. The tune merely combines the dissonance of their first full-length with their stronger melodic sensibilities in the mid-80s. All of This and Nothing effectively summarizes the Psychedelic Furs evolution from a left-of-center British rock band to a stylish alternative pop act.

Book of Days : Allmusic album Review : Having gotten a much needed recharge with the excellent "All That Money Wants" single and further helped by the reappearance of Vince Ely on drums, the back-to-a-quartet Furs came up with an album that erased the misfire of Midnight to Midnight almost completely. Book of Days also benefited from a great producer -- Dave Allen, whose work with the Cure is partially echoed at many points on this textured, strong collection of songs. Richard Butlers voice isnt remarkably different than before but he sounds better all the same, Allen letting his voice through the mix while John Ashtons rich and ringing guitars fill out the mix instead of keyboards. The Tim Butler/Ely rhythm section, if not always as frenetic as in early days, shows a partnership well reestablished, and the end result can often rival the early Furs at their best. Perhaps the slight difference -- and the reason why its not a perfect success -- is that there arent as many instantly grab-your-attention songs as there could be, something the band never really had a problem with before. Often the best moments arent the individual songs but their differing approaches -- the heavily distorted bass rumble of "Entertain Me," the stripped-down blend of acoustic guitar and cello of "Torch." If anything, Allens work with both the Cure and the Chameleons gets useful and understandable echoes here, heard on finer songs like the slow, queasily unsettled title track -- Ashtons guitar is some of his finest -- and "I Dont Mine." There is one truly killer moment, however -- "House," which far from being a nod to the U.K.s acid house explosion is prime Furs through and through, with a wonderful Ashton introduction, one of Butlers least cryptic lyrics on the whole album, and a soaring, strong chorus.

World Outside : Allmusic album Review : What turned out to be the final Psychedelic Furs album as such in the bands initial existence was in ways an appropriate sort of bookend, in that for one last time the group officially was a sextet (though Vince Ely, having performed well on Book of Days, left once more). That said, World Outside wasnt part two of the debut, and ended up being a bit of an ambiguous conclusion to the groups days. On the one hand, the songs throughout were much more direct and often more memorable than on Book of Days, while the co-production by Stephen Street, who had worked with the band to such excellent effect on "All That Money Wants," was another sharp move. While showing as much in the way of detail and texture as Dave Allen did on Book of Days, generally speaking the album is a bit lighter and less overwhelming, letting the songs stand out more. That said, though it sometimes comes close, theres nothing quite as immediate as "Pretty in Pink" or "Love My Way" -- perhaps the sign of an older band wanting to explore things in its own way, but still theres the nagging sense that something is missing. Lead single "Until She Comes" is a winner, though albeit in a lower-key way, a lovely slow ballad that shimmers like a lake in the afternoon sun. Follow-up single "Dont Be a Girl" could have been another success, but aside from John Ashtons great opening guitar its a bit here, a bit there -- the albums problem in a nutshell, where there are many good songs but few great ones. Regardless, there are enough moments on World Outside that really connect well, including the charging and inspirational "In My Head," a fine counterpart to Book of Days "House," the acoustic guitar-led "Get a Room," and the understated anthem "Theres a World."

Should God Forget: A Retrospective : Allmusic album Review : The Psychedelic Furs were the perfect lesson of why a great band should never turn to sh*t: it makes everyone forget they once meant a great deal. On CD one, it comes back, just like in 1980 when their first, self-titled LP arrived amid a storm of London raves (and smart singles), with such grinding, subversive-sounding, catchy rockers as "India," "Pulse," and "We Love You." They helped lead the burgeoning post-punk vanguard that had retained punks primal urgency, but utilized unique, creative sounds and styles instead of punks insistence on basic rocknblues chords. And there was Richard Butler kicking the stage under his kimono on that first, 1980 U.S. tour -- a blend, both aurally and visually, of master cynic Johnny Rotten (his voice was also as raspy and guttural) and the super-interesting Bowie (then of Low, Heroes, and Lodger). Wow! Second LP (Talk Talk Talk) killers such as "Into You Like a Train" and "Pretty in Pink" failed to diminish that fearsome rep, and even the prettier Todd Rundgren-produced third LP (Forever Now) still sounded fresh, as heard here with "Merry Go Round" and the lovely hit that broke them, "Love My Way." But with this taste of the top, the Furs lost their fire. They wanted to be pop stars, so they neutered their sound. The seduction of John Hughes movie mediocrity that simultaneously infected and ruined Simple Minds (likewise obliterating five great LPs) led them to a flavorless, danceable, weeny-pop wimp out. The first half of disc two, like those unforgivable if popular LPs they unleashed in the mid-80s, falls so far, one feels the sting of betrayal. Unlike Simple Minds, the Furs became properly embarrassed over their loss of respect, leading them to two final, surprisingly good LPs that reclaimed a tougher sound, if not quite recapturing their older, caustic edge -- see the last half of disc two. But by then, no one but the teenyboppers theyd callously courted cared, the hits dried up, and the band capitulated. This double-dip CD further tosses up B-sides, rare tracks, and unreleased cuts to entice. But what still matters is the 1980-1982 stuff. Feel your skin freeze over: "India! Youre my love song!" Buy the first two LPs, but Should God Forget is also a thorough reminder of fertility realized.

Greatest Hits : Allmusic album Review : Paul Weller once said "I never understood why the Psychedelic Furs didnt sell more records." Richard Butler broke up the band in 1991, leaving the Psychedelic Furs synth-tinged, horn-revered sound to fade away in the surge of 90s grunge rock, and their chances of becoming a global success were never fully developed. They achieved moderate success in their native U.K. with songs such as "All That Money Wants" and "President Gas," but only the American college charts paid attention to what the band was trying to do. All of This and Nothing (1988) was released shortly after the Psych Furs big break in America thanks to the popularity of "Heartbreak Beat" and the John Hughes soundtrack classic "Pretty in Pink." The extensive, overwhelming double-disc Should God Forget: A Retrospective followed in 1997, offering lost grooves, B-sides, and outtakes aside from the hits. Columbias own Greatest Hits package features a 17-track setlist, handpicked by Tim Butler. The collection streams through the bands career of 14 years, including all the favorites and cult classics, such as "Love My Way," "Dumb Waiters," "Sister Europe," and "Heaven," as well as the previously unavailable single version of "Mr. Jones."

Beautiful Chaos: Greatest Hits Live : Allmusic album Review : The Psychedelic Furs will forever be one of the 80s original bands, so their millennium re-formation was a defining success. Beautiful Chaos: Greatest Hits Live celebrates the Psychedelic Furs classy, cool mix of Roxy Music and the Rolling Stones and the tour which boasted a monumental comeback. Recorded at Los Angeles House of Blues, Beautiful Chaos is the bands first live album and a return to the basics. Richard Butlers campy swagger remains inviting and sensual, and the Furs dreamy romance on cuts like "Heaven," "The Ghost in You," and "Love My Way" showcase an intimacy never lost. The dark aesthetic of "Sister Europe" blazes with Richard Fortus cunning riffs and the glam licks on "President Gas" reiterate the Furs confident nature; bass, guitar, and Butlers smoky, thick vocalic growl affirm the bands dramatic compositions. A studio track entitled "Alive" does show the bands age, but elegantly so. It shimmers with a comfort and warmth not found on the Furs earlier albums. Its also proof that the Psychedelic Furs werent just another pop band from the glossy new wave 80s. Beautiful Chaos suggests that their rawness was never gone, and the band, too, realizes that.
