Allmusic Biography : Although he synthesized disparate elements of both rock and pop traditions, singer/songwriter Harry Nilsson was at heart a maverick whose allegiance belonged to neither. His initial series of albums in the late 60s made him a personal favorite of the Beatles, who found a natural affinity with his knack for catchy melodies, witty lyrics, and extraordinary vocal range. Thought of as a songwriter first and a performer second, he became a pop star himself in the late 60s and early 70s with "Everybodys Talking" and "Without You." He lost some of his original audience, however, with subsequent detours into pre-rock styles of pop, and did little recording over the last 15 years of his life. Nilsson had been struggling to make inroads into the music business for over five years before his critically acclaimed 1967 album, Pandemonium Shadow Show. He made demos, sang commercial jingles, and shopped songs, all the while keeping his job at a Los Angeles-area bank. In the mid-60s, he wrote a few songs with Phil Spector that were recorded by the Ronettes and the Modern Folk Quartet; occasionally he released records of his own. The Monkees recorded his "Cuddly Toy," and the Yardbirds did "Ten Little Indians" on a single in their waning days. But Nilsson didnt quit his bank job until after the release of Pandemonium Shadow Show, which gave him creative rein in the studio for the first time, and showcased his three-and-a-half-octave voice to full advantage. The album caught the attention of the Beatles (helped, no doubt, by its ingenious medley of classic Beatle tunes, "You Cant Do That"). John Lennon and Paul McCartney named him as their favorite American singer at a press conference, an extraordinary accolade for an unknown. (Nilsson was sometimes even rumored to be joining the group.) Three Dog Night took his "One" into the Top Ten in 1969, and Nilssons second LP, Aerial Ballet, continued the ambitious pop/rock direction of his debut, marrying his slightly eccentric, bouncy (if sometimes precious) tunes to baroque orchestral production. When one of its songs, "Everybodys Talkin," was used as the theme for the Midnight Cowboy film, Nilsson had his first Top Ten hit. The irony was that, although Nilsson was primarily identified as a singer/songwriter, the song was actually a cover of a composition by folk-rocker Fred Neil. But Nilsson would never be content to be pigeonholed into definite categories, as demonstrated by his two 1970 albums. One was devoted entirely to covers of songs by Randy Newman (then just emerging as a performer); another was his soundtrack to an animated childrens special, The Point (including the hit "Me and My Arrow"). And it was another cover (of a Badfinger album track) that gave him his biggest single, the number one smash "Without You." Yet Nilsson didnt cash in on his stardom in a conventional manner; he never performed in concert (there were occasional television appearances), preferring to craft his artistry in the studio. "Without You" appeared on 1971s Nilsson Schmilsson, which included a couple of other hits, the faux-tropical "Coconut" and the surprisingly gritty "Jump Into the Fire," which rates as his hardest-rocking cut. During the first half of the 1970s, he continued to broaden his range from the well-crafted, peppy, sensitive tunes that had dotted his early releases, cutting some tougher, more sour work. He lost some of his constituency, however, with 1973s A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night, a collection of pre-rock pop standards with an orchestra conducted by arranger Gordon Jenkins (most noted for his work with Frank Sinatra). His affection for the music wasnt entirely surprising, as there had always been a strong Tin Pan Alley flavor to much of his writing, but it wasnt exactly in step with the times. Much of Nilssons notoriety stems from a period in the mid-70s when he was a drinking buddy of John Lennon in Los Angeles (where Lennon was living during a separation from Yoko Ono). The drunken pair were thrown out of L.A.s Troubadour club in a well-publicized incident, following which Lennon offered to produce Nilssons next album. The timing was not opportune; Nilsson lost his voice during the sessions, rupturing one of his vocal cords, keeping it a secret out of fear that Lennon would abandon the project. Released as Pussy Cats, it was his last album to make the Top 100. During the same period, he also embarked on a project with another L.A.-based ex-Beatle, Ringo Starr, acting and writing music for the little-seen Son of Dracula film. The upper register of Nilssons voice, which was ultimately his greatest asset, had been permanently (though not irredeemably) damaged. After a few rather unsuccessful late-70s album, Nilsson withdrew from the studio into family life and other business ventures, spending much of his energies campaigning for gun control after Lennon was shot in 1980. In failing health in the 1990s, diagnosed with diabetes and suffering a massive heart attack, he died in early 1994, just after finishing the vocal tracks for a new album.

Harry Nilsson's Greatest Hits : Allmusic album Review : RCAs 1983 Harry Nilsson compilation pales in comparison to later overviews like 1995s two-disc Personal Best: The Harry Nilsson Anthology and 2002s Greatest Hits, but theres still plenty here to recommend, including "1941," the Point!s "Me and My Arrow," the career making "Everybodys Talking" and "Coconut," and even a cut ("Love Story") from his Randy Newman cover album Nilsson Sings Newman.

Spotlight on Nilsson : Allmusic album Review : Before Harry Nilsson became Nilsson and started recording his string of excellent RCA albums, he was a part-time fixture on the L.A. music scene, one of the many hopefuls trying to crack the commercial coconut. In between cutting vocal tracks for television and radio commercials, he often found the time and opportunity to record some real tracks, and some of these efforts are represented here. Frankly, some of these sound like demos, but Nilssons ability as a vocalist par excellence is readily apparent. Tracks like "Good Times," "Sixteen Tons," and several others have a true period charm. The resulting album is akin to the Byrds Preflyte, another simple, wondrously lo-fi collection that clearly shows you where it all began.

Pandemonium Shadow Show : Allmusic album Review : Harry Nilssons debut album, Pandemonium Shadow Show, was notoriously loved by the Beatles, and its easy to see why. This is the only record of its time that feels akin to Sgt. Pepper, and in some ways, its every bit as impressive. Nilsson works on a much smaller scale, leaning heavily on whimsy yet cutting it with sardonic humor and embellishing it with remarkable song and studiocraft; its as if McCartney and Lennon were fused into the same body. Pandemonium cant help but feel like a cheeky show of strength by a remarkably gifted imp, spinning out psychedelic fantasias and jokes and trumping his idols by turning out a cover of "Shes Leaving Home" (recorded ten days after Sgt. Peppers release) that rivals the original. Beneath all the light playful melodies ("There Will Never Be" is swinging London, L.A. style) or glorious laments (he rarely equaled "Sleep Late, My Lady Friend"), there are serious strains: the lyrics of "Cuddly Toy" are as unsettling as the melody catchy, the circus-stomp "Ten Little Indians" is a darkly addictive retelling of the Ten Commandments, and "1941" is quietly heartbreaking beneath its jaunty cabaret. Throughout it all, Nilsson impresses with his humor, cleverness, and above all, how his songwriting blossoms under his shockingly inventive studiocraft. Psychedelic pop albums rarely came better than this, and it remains a thorough delight.

Aerial Ballet : Allmusic album Review : As "Good Old Desk" opens Aerial Ballet with a cheerful saunter, its clear that Harry Nilsson decided to pick up where he left off with his debut, offering another round of effervescent, devilishly clever pop, equal parts lite psychedelia, pretty ballads, and music hall cabaret. Its not a carbon copy, however. In one sense, he entrenches himself a little bit, emphasizing his lighter edges and humor, writing songs so cheerfully lightweight -- a love song about his mom and dad, an ode to his favorite desk, an address or two to a "Little Cowboy" -- that it may be a little too cloying for some tastes, even for fans of Pandemonium Shadow Show. Those are balanced by a couple major steps forward, namely "Everybodys Talkin" and "One." The former finds Nilsson adopting a rolling folk-pop backing for a Fred Neil song, making it into an instant, Grammy-winning classic. The latter was the greatest song he had written to date, a haunting tale of loneliness reminiscent of McCartney, yet with its own voice. These are the songs anchoring an album that may be a little lightweight, but its engagingly, deliberately lightweight. If its a bit dated, it wears its old charms well.

Harry : Allmusic album Review : Ironically, Harry is where Harry Nilsson began to become Nilsson, an immensely gifted singer/songwriter/musician with a warped sense of humor that tended to slightly overwhelm his skills, at least to those who arent quite operating on the same level. This aspect of his personality surfaces partially because the record is a crazy quilt of originals, covers, bizarre Americana, quiet ballads, show tunes, and soft-shoe shuffles. It doesnt really hold together, per se, due to its lack of focus (which, if youre a cultist, is naturally the reason why its charming). Due to the sheer number of shuffling nostalgia trips, it seems as if Nilsson is attempting to sell the entire album on personality and, to anyone who isnt converted to his unique perspective, these may the moments that make Harry a little difficult to take, even with songs as expertly constructed as the delightful "Nobody Cares About the Railroads Anymore," an attempt to ape Randy Newmans Tin Pan Alley style. Then, there are the songs that really work, such as the sardonically cute "The Puppy Song," the gentle "Mournin Glory Story," and "I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City," a thoroughly winning folk-rock song he wrote for Midnight Cowboy but which was rejected in favor of "Everybodys Talkin." These are the moments that deliver on the promise of his first two records, while the rest suggests where he would go next, whether in the immediate future (a cover of Newmans "Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear") or several years later (the weird in-jokes and insularity of portions of the album, which would become his modus operandi as of Nilsson Schmilsson).

Nilsson Schmilsson : Allmusic album Review : Harry Nilsson had a hit, a Grammy, and critical success, yet he still didnt have a genuine blockbuster to his name when it came time to finally deliver a full-fledged follow-up to Nilsson Sings Newman, so he decided it was time to make that unabashed, mainstream pop/rock album. Hiring Barbra Streisand producer Richard Perry as a collaborator, Nilsson made a streamlined, slightly domesticated, unashamed set of mature pop/rock, with a slight twist. This is an album, after all, that begins by pining for the reckless days of youth, then segues into a snapshot of suburban disconnectedness before winding through a salute to and covers of old R&B tunes ("Early in the Morning" and "Let the Good Times Roll," respectively), druggie humor ("Coconut"), and surging hard rock ("Jump Into the Fire"). There are certainly hints of the Nilsson of old, particularly in his fondness for Tin Pan Alley and McCartney melodicism -- as well as his impish wit -- yet he hadnt made a record as cohesive as this since his first time out, nor had he ever made something as shiny and appealing as this. It may be more accessible than before, yet its anchored by his mischievous humor and wonderful idiosyncrasies. Chances are that those lured in by the grandly melodramatic "Without You" will not be prepared for either the subtle charms of "The Moonbeam Song" or the off-kilter sensibility that makes even his breeziest pop slightly strange. In short, its a near-perfect summary of everything Nilsson could do; he could be craftier and stranger, but never did he achieve the perfect balance as he did here.

Son of Schmilsson : Allmusic album Review : Emboldened by a huge hit and hanging with Lennon and Ringo, Harry Nilsson was ready to let it all go when it came time to record a follow-up to Nilsson Schmilsson. The very title of Son of Schmilsson implies that its a de facto sequel to its smash predecessor but, as always with Nilsson, dont take everything at face value. Yes, hes back with producer Richard Perry and hes working from the same gleefully melodic, polished pop/rock territory as before, but this is an incredibly schizoid record, an album by an enormously gifted musician deciding that, since hes already going unhinged, he might as well indulge himself while hes at it. And, wow, are the results ever worth it. Opening with a song to a groupie -- he sang his balls off, baby, he nearly broke the microphone -- and ending with an ode to "The Most Beautiful World in the World," this record careens all over the place, bouncing from one idea to another, punctuated with B-horror movie sound effects, bizarre humor, profanity, and belches. There are song parodies, seemingly straight piano ballads, vulgar hard rock, lovely love songs, and a cheerful singalong with retirees at an old folks home who all proclaim, "Id rather be dead than wet my bed." The sheer perversity of it all would be fascinating, yet if thats all it had to offer, itd merely be a curiosity, the way his post-Pussy Cats records are. Instead, this is all married to a fantastic set of songs that illustrate what a skilled, versatile songsmith Nilsson was. No, it may not be the easiest album to warm to -- and its just about the weirdest record to reach number 12 and go gold -- but if you appreciate Nilssons musicality and weirdo humor, he never got any better.

Nilsson Sings Newman : Allmusic album Review : Named Stereo Reviews album of the year (and, really, can you ask for a better endorsement than that?) upon its release and generally regarded as the album that introduced Randy Newman the songwriter to a wide audience, Nilsson Sings Newman has gained a reputation of being an minor masterwork. This, in a way, is misguiding, since this isnt an obvious record, where the songs are delivered simply and directly. Its deliberately an album of subtle pleasures, crafted, as the liner notes state, line by line in the studio. As such, the preponderance of quiet piano-and-voice tracks (featuring Newman himself on piano, Nilsson on vocals) means the record can slip away upon the first few listens, especially for anyone expecting an undeniable masterpiece. Yet, a masterpiece is what this is, albeit a subtle, graceful masterpiece where the pleasure is in the grace notes, small gestures, and in-jokes. Not to say that this is devoid of emotion; its just that the emotion is subdued, whether its on a straightforward love song ("Caroline") or a tongue-in-cheek tale like "Love Story." For an album that introduced a songwriter as idiosyncratic as Newman, its only appropriate that Nilssons interpretations are every bit as original as the songs. His clear intonation and sweet, high voice are more palatable than Randys slurred, bluesy growl, but the wild thing is, these versions demand that the listeners surrender to Nilssons own terms. Hes created gentle, intricate arrangements of tuneful yet clever songs, and as such, the album may be as much an acquired taste as Newman. Once youve acquired that taste, this is as sweet as honey.

A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night : Allmusic album Review : Nilsson was nearly a decade ahead of Linda Ronstadt and other nouveau crooners in hiring a conductor/arranger of the pre-rock era (in this case Gordon Jenkins) and recording an album of standards before a full orchestra. And he did it better than most, proving to be a marvelous interpreter of songs like "Whatll I Do?" and "Makin Whoopee!" His version of "As Time Goes By" became a minor hit.

Pussy Cats : Allmusic album Review : The relationship between Harry Nilsson and John Lennon is legendary. They were notorious booze hounds and carousers, getting kicked out of clubs for misbehavior and generally terrorizing L.A. during Lennons "lost weekend" of 1974. They wanted to make an album together -- hell, anyone working at such a peak would -- and the result was Pussy Cats, a Nilsson album produced by Lennon. Almost immediately, Nilsson got sick, resulting in a ruptured vocal cord. Not wanting Lennon to stop the sessions, Nilsson never told his friend, stubbornly working his way through the sessions until he lost his voice entirely. These are the sessions that make up Pussy Cats, an utterly bewildering record thats more baffling than entertaining. Like many superstar projects of its time, this is studded with contributions from friends and studio musicians, all intent on having a good time in the studio -- which usually means hammering out rock & roll oldies. In this case, it meant both Dylans "Subterranean Homesick Blues" and the childrens song "Loop de Loop," which gives a good idea where Nilsson was at. Through its messiness, Pussy Cats winds up showing how he and Lennon violently careened between hedonism and self-loathing. Of the new songs, the inadvertently revealing "All My Life" is the strongest, followed by the sweet "Dont Forget Me," yet this is more about tone than substance. Its about hearing Nilssons voice getting progressively harsher, as the backing remains appealingly professional and slick. It doesnt quite jibe, and its certainly incoherent, but thats its charm. It may not be as wild as the lost weekend itself, but it couldnt have been recorded at any other time and remains a fascinating aural snapshot of the early days of 1974.

Duit on Mon Dei : Allmusic album Review : More tongue-in-cheek wordplay from Harry Nilsson. The album was originally titled Gods Greatest Hits, but powers that be persuaded Nilsson to change it. His voice as well as his talent for writing catchy tunes was wearing thin here, and as with previous efforts, nothing stands out like his earlier material. Duit On Mon Dei is an artist on the wane.

...That's the Way It Is : Allmusic album Review : Well, what do you expect from an artist whos reading Penthouse, surrounded by liquor bottles and cigarettes, on the cover of his album? Perfection? Accessibility? Sanity? Well, you aint gonna get that from Nilsson, a man who left sanity behind shortly after he entered the mainstream with Nilsson Schmilsson. Instead, you get a record from an artist whos just at the fringe of popular culture, not really caring if he has a hit, but not really wanting to be so weird that hes just a cult. Realizing all of this, the artist also knows that he doesnt need to try so hard -- he can be as lazy as he looks on the cover. So, that means Thats the Way It Is is essentially a covers record, with songs ranging from material penned by longtime favorite Randy Newman ("Sail Away") to longtime fan George Harrison ("That Is All") to oldies ("Just One Look/Baby Im Yours") to obscurities ("She Sits Down on Me" and "Zombie Jamboree"). Only two original songs then: the faux-reggae "Moonshine Bandit" and "Daylight Has Caught Me," co-written with Dr. John. Everythings given a rather lush, but not particularly sleek treatment, placing it closer to soft rock than to the unabashed cult rock that Nilsson was producing at this point. So, this winds up being an album thats not as gleefully weird and funny as its predecessors and yet is stranger because of that. Because, for chrissake, who wants this album? It doesnt have enough perversity or indulgence for those who treasure his weirdness, but its way too idiosyncratic and odd for anyone who might like the L.A.-style vibe. Not a bad record, really, but certainly not a very good one, even by latter-day Nilsson standards.

Sandman : Allmusic album Review : Nilsson started going off the tracks at Pussy Cats, but his descent into sheer, unhinged lunacy became apparent with 1976s Sandman, his second album recorded in 1975. It was easy to view Duit on Mon Dei as transitory, but this proves that it was a transition to craziness and cultdom. At this point, he was abandoned by Lennon, left alone in L.A. and Nilsson just didnt care. He continued to roam, rampage, and record, ensconcing himself in his own world of in-jokes, Tin Pan Alley melodies, soft rock, clever wit, and sheer drunkenness. Check the cover: on the front, he has a bottle of wine between his legs, on the back hes overcome by a sand crab. On the album itself, he repudiates rock & roll, realizes "Pretty Soon Therell Be Nothing Left for Everybody," has a drunken conversation with himself (so extreme that hes thrown out of the bar), explains why he did not go to work today, writes an ode to flying saucers, offers cheekily literal instructions on how to write a song and then covers a song from the last album. Melodically, hes still strong, but the gleeful craziness overwhelms the pretty music and accessible production, resulting in an album that makes Son of Schmilsson and Pussy Cats seem normal, which may only signal just how far away from the mainstream Nilsson was at this point. But, in a way, he was still brilliant -- these are exceptional recordings, and his warped sense of humor is funnier than its ever been. Thats not to say that Sandman is an easy record -- you have to not only accept Nilssons quirks, but embrace them more than his talents to love this album -- but if your head is properly calibrated, this is one to treasure. Knnillssonn : Allmusic album Review : Realizing that he had nothing left to lose when he got to the end of his RCA contract, Harry Nilsson wound up recording his best, most distinctive record since Pussy Cats, maybe, Son of Schmilsson. Abandoning the very idea of a mainstream pop album is just the beginning of his conceptual coup here with Knnillssonn. Recording almost all of the sounds with keyboards and guitars, Nilsson also decided to drive the guitars into the background. In some ways, this may make it similar to A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night, but instead of being a standards record, this is all new material, written in a classical pop style and delivered in a slightly modernistic fashion. The result is an album thats out of step with its time and with the eras music in general. With its old-fashioned pop sensibility and weirdly out of sync production, plus Nilssons trademark clever songsmithery and impish humor, Knnillssonn is a pop album like no other. It has his best set of songs in many a year, and the production is fascinating, yet at times it sounds like hes trying a little too hard. Still, there are brilliant moments, whether its a tune as seductive as "All I Think About Is You" or the Agatha Christie murder mystery salute "Who Done It?" For all the cultists who struggled with, and at times embraced, his years of uneven records, this is their reward: an album that may only appeal to a small audience, but that satisfies their every desire about what an album from their favorite artist should be. [Originally released in 1977, Knnillssonn was reissued with bonus tracks in 2002.]

Flash Harry : Allmusic album Review : Though Knnillssonn supposedly ends Harry Nilssons American discography, theres another item: a little-known, one-off album for Mercury/Phonogram that was recorded in Los Angeles and released in Great Britain but not. apparently, in the U.S. This would be Flash Harry -- the English nickname for a snappy dresser, which at this time, Nilsson was notoriously not. Surrounded by his pals and many crack L.A. session men and guests, with Steve Cropper behind the production controls, Nilsson seems to struggle to stay interested in this project; conserving his cigarettes-and-alcohol-ravaged voice; collaborating on some new songs but often relying upon others for material. He doesnt even appear on the leadoff track; instead, Eric Idle and Charlie Dore open the album with Idles happy-go-lucky ode to Nilsson, "Harry." "Cheek To Cheek" soon dissolves into faux-Mexicanisms; "Rain" experiments amiably with a reggae groove; "Ive Got It!" is another of those nutty, late-period Nilsson doodlings -- this time apparently about a transaction with a hooker. As a reminder of his friendship with the then-retired John Lennon, Nilsson covers "Old Dirt Road" in a somewhat strangled voice; in any case, its not much of a song (Nilsson had a hand in the lyrics); nor does he cast it in a different light from Lennons own version. Another ex-Beatles buddy, Ringo Starr, plays drums on the album and collaborates with Nilsson on the relaxed reggae tune "How Long Can Disco On" -- whose title is easily the cleverest thing about the track. The best tune of all is the closer -- Nilssons lazily loping singalong cover of Idles wickedly ironic "The Bright Side Of Life" (from The Life Of Brian ), which has tripping orchestral trappings that harken back to Nilssons first RCA recordings with George Tipton.

As Time Goes By : Allmusic album Review : Harry Nilsson was always a maverick artist, following his own sense of style down the hallways of pop, turning out carefully crafted -- even baffling -- songs that shared no direct affinity with any other artist of his day, although in some ways he resembled Randy Newman (even recording a marvelous album of Newman covers). Both men drew on American Tin Pan Alley traditions, but while Newman used them to craft his own ironic view of the little cruelties and kindnesses of the human condition, there was a part of Nilsson that always wanted to actually be a part of that tradition, making him, in some ways, a singer stuck out of time. In 1973 he released A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night, an album of pop standards from the pre-rock era done with the arranging and conducting help of Gordon Jenkins, who had worked in a similar role with such musicians as Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Benny Goodman, and Louis Armstrong. The album was not particularly well received by Nilssons rock fans, and when a sort of sequel, A Touch More Schmilsson in the Night, was released in 1988, hardly anyone noticed. As Time Goes By combines both albums into one strong sequence, and it affords a chance to take another look at this phase of Nilssons career. Always a fine song interpreter (his version of the Badfinger song "Without You" stands as the definitive one, for instance, as does his rendition of Fred Neils "Everybodys Talkin"), Nilssons lyrical phrasing on such standards here as the title tune, "As Time Goes By," and Gus Kahn and Walter Donaldsons "Makin Whoopee" is nothing short of astounding, redefining and breathing life into them for a new era. Always a master of the hushed nuance, the gentle dignity and sincerity of Nilssons singing stands at the very heart of this album. Jenkins full orchestra arrangements dont intrude, but augment and support the delicate twists and turns of Nilssons phrasing, making this a wonderfully realized romantic album (in the best sense of the word). Having both albums together like this actually makes for a stronger presentation of these timeless songs, and while fans of Nilssons rockier side may well be disappointed by As Time Goes By, it is, in some ways, a more revealing release than any other in his canon.

Harry / Nilsson Sings Newman : Allmusic album Review : A two-fer of Harry and Nilsson Sings Newman was released as part of British RCA Camdens Nilsson reissue campaign of 2000. These two records are a perfect match, since they find Nilsson gently exploring pop, through either a nostalgic prism or through Randy Newmans show tune-influenced pop. The disc also contained two bonus tracks, "Snow" and "Waiting," his contributions to the motion picture Jenny.

That's the Way It Is / Knnillssonn : Allmusic album Review : Well, what do you expect from an artist whos reading Penthouse, surrounded by liquor bottles and cigarettes, on the cover of his album? Only two original songs then: the faux-reggae "Moonshine Bandit" and "Daylight Has Caught Me," co-written by Dr. John. Everythings given a rather lush, but not particularly sleek, treatment placing it closer to soft rock than to the unabashed cult rock that Nilsson was producing at this point. So, this winds up being an album thats not as gleefully weird and funny as its predecessors and yet is stranger because of that. Because, for chrissakes, who wants this album? It doesnt have enough perversity or indulgence for those who treasure his weirdness, but its way too idiosyncratic and odd for anyone who might like the L.A.-style vibe. Not a bad record, really, but certainly not a very good one, even by latter-day Nilsson standards.

One: The Best of Nilsson : Allmusic album Review : Music Clubs One: The Best of Nilsson offers up 36 tracks from the beloved late singer/songwriter and "Lost Weekend with John Lennon" enabler. There are a fair amount of Harry Nilsson compilations available and this ones as good as the best of them, providing listeners with an even-handed mix of hits ("Coconut," "Everybodys Talking," "Without You," and the "Moonbeam Song") and oddities ("Good Old Desk," "Puppy Song," "Think About Your Troubles"). While it may be a few tracks shy of 1995s Personal Best: The Harry Nilsson Anthology, One provides an excellent crash course in the genius of its author.

The Essential Nilsson : Allmusic album Review : A missing element in Harry Nilssons catalog is an excellent double-disc retrospective. Thats precisely what the 2013 compilation Essential Harry Nilsson provides: two discs that tell his story from beginning to end, hitting all the high points along the way. The first disc concentrates on his 60s work, chronicling the rise of Nilsson the maverick interpreter and songwriter; his original versions of "Cuddly Toy," "I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City," and "One" are here, as are his breakthrough cover of Fred Neils "Everybodys Talkin" and several selections from the landmark Nilsson Sings Newman, plus such remarkable pieces of popcraft like "1941," "Good Old Desk," "Without Her," and "Me and My Arrow." The entire second disc is devoted to the 70s, beginning with the smash 1971 album Nilsson Schmilsson and its hits -- "Without You," "Coconut," "Jump in the Fire" -- plus the album-opener "Gotta Get Up." From there, hits, non-LP singles, and the occasional oddities pile up -- "Youre Breakin My Heart," "Spaceman," "Daybreak," his straight version of "As Time Goes By," "Kojak Columbo" -- tracing his majestic rise and being kind with his fall. Although this doesnt have every great song Nilsson made (a few absent favorites are "Driving Along," "The Lottery Song," "Take Fifty Four," "Jesus Christ Youre Tall"), no other compilation has captured his peculiar genius as thoroughly as this, which does indeed make it something close to the Essential Harry Nilsson.

The RCA Albums Collection : Allmusic album Review : Harry Nilsson spent almost all of his rich, idiosyncratic, sometimes maddening career at RCA Records, releasing his bravura debut, Pandemonium Shadow Show, in 1967 and fading into the sunset with 1977s Knnillssonn. During those ten years, he released 14 albums and left behind a bunch of stray tracks, almost all of which are gathered on Legacys massive and wonderful 2013 box The RCA Albums Collection. Every one of his albums is here, presented as mini-LP replicas and expanded with mono mixes, outtakes, demos, and alternate takes, many of which previously appeared on turn-of-the-millennium reissues by Buddha and Camden, but there are also three full discs of rarities, adding up to 123 total bonus tracks, 55 of which are seeing their first release here. Notably, the five-song demo session that convinced the Monkees to record "Cuddly Toy" (and also includes Harrys only version of "This Could Be the Night," an early song co-written with Phil Spector) sees its first official release, but there are many other wonderful little gems scattered throughout the session discs. Those are the necessary, enticing details for collectors, but concentrating on rarities at the expense of the big picture isnt the way to approach The RCA Albums Collection, as this allows the work of one of pops true eccentric geniuses to be appreciated in its entirety. Nilssons career divides into two parts, the first tracing the rise of an L.A. studio genius who rode several lucky breaks on the road to becoming a respected and successful songwriter; the second finding Harry ditching almost everything that came before in a successful attempt to indulge his every whim. Usually, the first act overshadows the second, as their attributes are more readily apparent. Its easy to hear the intelligence behind the songwriting and the intricately arranged productions of his work from 1967-1971, whereas the second seven LPs take some work on the listeners part, but the continuum offered by The RCA Albums Collection reveals that these often-derided albums wind up seeming stronger than their rep. Nilssons relentless wit shines through, albeit often in bawdier form than before, and his musical acumen remains sharp. The only thing missing is that wondrous, pure voice, one which legendarily scaled three-and-a-half octaves and was worn down by Harrys relentless demons, but he was a smart singer, so he knew how to harness his hoarseness to his advantage, at least in the studio. Then again, Nilsson was a creature of the studio, a vocalist who never gave a concert, a songwriter who polished everything within the confines of multi-million dollar recording emporiums. He benefitted from the system then swindled it, creating recordings that evoked and influenced the times and, in doing so, transcended them as well. Seventeen discs may be an enormous undertaking, and admittedly some of the road is rocky, but the journey Harry Nilsson takes on The RCA Albums Collection is distinctive and thrilling, whether its heard for the first or 40th time.
